description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2007Authors: Simon, Sonja; Demmeler, Martin; Heißenhuber, Alois; To satisfy national sustainability targets in Germany, both bioenergy and organic farming claim a growing area of farmland. Analyses with a land use model and ac-companying expert interviews show, how the competition for land is growing in certain regions. A restricted area potential for energy crops – even with an ever intensifying farming opposes targets for an increasing share of land for organic agriculture and nature conservation. Thus there is a need for policy action, to discuss and solve this goal conflict. An ongoing study currently develops strategies for two selected German regions for a more ecologically compatible bioenergy production.

In view of the agricultural policy trends, the current socio-political climate and a continuously growing demand for organic products, a further expansion of organic farming seems likely. In view of these prospects, the objective of this study is to provide a quantitative assessment of the impacts of a significant expansion of organic farming in the European Union on agricultural production, markets and the environment. Using and extending the EU-wide agricultural sector model CAPRI, different policy scenarios for a conversion of organic farming to 20 % of the agricultural area in the EU are analysed. The results indicate that such an expansion has a significant effect on several policy-relevant indicators, but this impact is less than often projected on the basis on farm level comparative calculations. This is due to several different intra- and inter-sectoral feedback loops (e.g. market equilibriums, quotas) which can only be captured using a sectoral approach. The model results point to the significant influence the policy instruments, and thus the regional distribution of organic farming and the distribution of converting farm types, have on the extent of potential impacts of a more widespread conversion. This highlights the scope for policy making to pursue policy objectives more efficiently by designing the support programs accordingly.

Today, forest biomass is poorly quantified across most parts of the Earth surface due to the great difficulties in measuring biomass on the ground and consistently aggregating measurements across scales. SAR satellites can provide the required information globally and frequent in order to quantify current biomass state and the changes. Tandem-L is a German mission proposal for an innovative interferometric L-band radar mission that enables the systematic monitoring of dynamic Earth processes using advanced techniques and technologies. The mission is science driven aiming to provide a unique data set for climate and environmental research, geodynamics, hydrology and oceanography. Important application examples are global forest height and structure and the derivation of forest biomass. The Tandem-L mission concept consists of two cooperating satellites flying in close formation. The 3 D structure mode provides a unique data source to observe and quantify changes in forest biomass. This paper provides an overview of the potential of using multi-parametric SAR for forest structure estimation with the derivation of forest biomass and suggests a mission for a global acquisition.

Due to effective policy support to date, electricity generated by renewable energies already accounts for a relevant share - 20.1% - of the German electricity supply. As a result, enforced market integration and a more demand-oriented feed-in of electricity from renewable energies are considered crucial next steps in the process of transformation. In the process, recent years have seen the development and discussion of new regulation mechanisms aimed at facilitating a smooth transition for renewable energy power plant operators from guaranteed feed-in tariffs to a deregulated electricity market. A variety of actors have been involved, both in this development process and in the actual process of market integration. These actors’ goals, strategies and options have formed the focus of two interdisciplinary research projects1. The goal of the projects is the development of an agent-based simulation model as an instrument to analyse possible actions and interactions of the relevant stakeholders, as well as their effects on the overall system under different regulatory frameworks. An important prerequisite for the set-up of the agent-based model was the thorough analysis of the relevant actors: how are they influenced by the regulatory framework? How do they develop business models and routines, and how have they tried to reshape formal institutions in order to meet their goals? This actor analysis and its results will be presented in this paper. We will present the agent-based simulation model AMIRIS (Agent-based Model for the Integration of Renewables Into the Power System), which can be used as a policy analysis and design tool to foster the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity market. Additionally, we show some results of first simulation runs for the assessment of the ‘optional market premium’ in Germany until 2020.

A number of plants are already under construction or even close to grid operation. The bases for these developments are the experiences gained with the American plants in the past 20 years. This paper concentrates on two aspects concerning the operation of the plant which are, according to the authors experience, often not considered in the design phase of a new plant although their impact on the performance or component requirements of the plant is quite significant. The aspect of defocusing at over-load is analyzed by energy balances. The second field of oil temperature controllability is studied using a dynamic simulation tool.

Motivated by an application example, the comfort zone for mobile kinematically redundant manipulators is defined. The position and orientation of the mobile platform (=base of the manipulator) and the joint angles are selected in such a way that selected target functions are minimized. These objective functions are derived from known measures such as Cartesian velocity, force and stiffness. The objective functions are evaluated depending on the parameters of the base and the joint angles of the manipulator, whereby only a subspace of possible configurations is freely selectable for optimization due to the given position and orientation of the end effector (EE). Pareto-fronts are calculated in the sense of multi-criteria optimization, which are limited by, e.g., minimum achievable force or minimum achievable speed. For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Other literature type 2018 GermanyAuthors: Danner, Timo; Latz, Arnulf;A major driving force for the development of electrochemical storage technology with high energy density is the electrification of the mobility sector. High expectations rest on the development of beyond Li-Ion battery systems [1]. Especially, lithium-sulfur batteries (Li/S) are believed to be a promising candidate already in the near future. Despite the increasing efforts to realize a large-scale commercialization several fundamental properties of Li/S batteries are still a matter of intensive research. Recently, several groups investigated the influence of surface properties at the positive electrode, like the affinity towards polysulfides or surface roughness, on the morphology and spatial distribution of solid charge and discharge products [2]–[4]. The results indicate that a spatial control of the formation of solid Li2S is able to improve battery performance, however, additional design guidelines are needed to optimize this approach. Simulations on the continuum scale give the opportunity to interpret the measurements, improve our understanding of relevant processes, and allow for an optimization of interface, electrode and, cell designs. In our contribution we will present simulation results of a detailed model describing the nucleation, growth, and dissolution of the solid end-products S8 and Li2S in Li/S batteries. In our calculations we simulate the dynamic evolution of the corresponding particle size distributions at various positions in the cell and take into account their effect on transport properties and active surface areas. The model is integrated in our framework for the simulation of metal-sulfur (Me/S) batteries which handles the reaction and transport of dissolved sulfur species on cell level [5]. This multiscale approach allows us to track the concentration and volume fraction of sulfur species during cycling and additionally gives the opportunity for a systematic study of the polysulfide shuttle. The simulated evolution of solid volume fractions and particle size distributions are in good qualitative agreement with data of X-ray in-operando measurements recently published in the literature [6] and correlate the morphological properties of the electrode to the electrochemical characteristics. In a next step the model will be used to investigate the influence of additional positive electrode materials with different specific surface area and/or affinity towards sulfur species in order to assess their impact on battery performance. This approach provides mechanistic insights on the operation of Li/S batteries and will contribute to the understanding and, therefore, improvement of next-generation batteries

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2007Authors: Simon, Sonja; Demmeler, Martin; Heißenhuber, Alois; To satisfy national sustainability targets in Germany, both bioenergy and organic farming claim a growing area of farmland.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2005Publisher:kassel university press GmbH, Kassel Authors: Offermann, Dr Frank;Organic farming has expanded rapidly in Europe during the last decade.

DLR developed a two-chamber test reactor to technically realise and experimentally analyse this reaction in the solar furnace in Cologne. Moreover, a model of the second reaction chamber for decomposition of SO3 was implemented and validated by experimental data.
