The construction of NPP in Vietnam will essentially relieve the deficit in energy production. The political leaders of Vietnam reckon upon the further growth of the economy. Energy of Vietnam is now generally held on big HPPs and TPPs. Small hydropower and such renewable energy sources as sun and wind play an important role in energy production. Because of the small amount of falls in the recent years in spite of monsoon climate, HPPs in Vietnam produce energy using not their full capacity. In TPP coal, diesel oil and gas is used as energy resources. The share of coal is still quite big (around 18 %) and coal TPPs have a serious negative impact on the environment. That’s why the specialists count on the development of nuclear energy. The paper presents the plans for the construction of a nuclear power plant "Ninh Thuan" in Vietnam, the alleged NPP project, its advantage over other projects, prerequisites and prospects for cooperation between the Russian and Vietnamese governments in this field.

The aim is here to propose a predictive method in order to evaluate the vibroacoustical behaviour of a plate excited by TBL pressure fluctuations. The ultimate goal is to develop tools for predicting internal cabin noise in an aircraft during flight. Hence TBL is considered. Different TBL models are discussed and compared. A prediction method well suited for mid-high frequencies is also presented. The method called simplified energy method (SEM) is based on local energetic considerations and extends the well-known statistical energy analysis (SEA). Two different SEM formulations are presented. The first one is of heat conduction type, whilst the second is radiative. The TBL source model was integrated in the local energy proposed formulations. When applied to a simple Kirchhoff-Love simply supported plate, SEM allows prediction of averaged energy quantities. Comparisons are drawn between heat and radiative formulations. Good concordance was observed between energy results and pure analytical calculations of the structural response under TBL excitation over a wide frequency range.

A simple, economical and practical impact resistance test method has been developed for high strength fiber reinforced concrete (HSFRC). The results indicated that there is a logarithmic relation between flexural toughness energy (EFT) and impact energy (El) for FRC In this study, three different aspect ratios of hooked-end fibers, namely, 30/0.50; 60/0.80 and 50/0.60 length/diameter (mm/mm) were used. Fibers were added to concrete in four different volume percentages of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 %. From the results it can be said that fibers in high strength concrete improve impact resistance and flexural toughness of concrete. Also a good correlation between flexural toughness energy and impact energy has been established.

The installation of wind energy increased in the last twenty years, as its cost decreased, and it contributes to reducing GHG emissions. A race toward gigantism characterizes wind turbine development, primarily driven by offshore projects. The larger wind turbines are facing higher loads, and the imperatives of mass reduction make them more flexible. Size increase of wind turbines results in higher structural vibrations that reduce the lifetime of the components (blades, main shaft, bearings, generator, gearbox, etc.) and might lead to failure or destruction. This paper aims to present in detail the problems associated with wind turbine vibration and a thorough literature review of the different mitigation solutions. We explore the advantages, drawbacks, and challenges of the existing vibration control systems for wind turbines. These systems belong to six main categories, according to the physical principles used and how they operate to mitigate the vibrations. This paper offers a multi-criteria analysis of a vast number of systems in different phases of development, going from full-scale testing to prototype stage, experiments, research, and ideas.

The main aim of this work is to propose a new algorithm of reliability assessment for steel civil engineering structures subjected to fire temperatures. This new algorithm is based upon the relative probabilistic entropy concept elaborated by Bhattacharyya, and this probabilistic distance is sought in-between extreme and admissible deformations of some structural beam subjected to higher temperatures. Similar to the First Order Reliability Method, this approach uses the first two probabilistic characteristics of the structural response, when structural output may be modelled with the use of Gaussian distribution. The probabilistic structural response is found here using hybrid computational technique–the Finite Element Method system ABAQUS with its fully coupled thermo-elastic analysis with 3D solid elements and probabilistic modules implemented in the computer algebra system MAPLE. The probabilistic response is determined via a triple stochastic analysis, which is based on the classical Monte-Carlo simulation, iterative generalized stochastic perturbation technique, and also using semi-analytical probabilistic calculus. Final determination of the relative entropy in the Serviceability Limit State of the given structure and its comparison with the results obtained using the FORM analysis enables to calibrate this new technique to numerical values proposed in the engineering designing codes. Hence, a more accurate probabilistic method may use some experimental-based admissible values included in the existing design of legal provisions.

The main aim of this work is to propose a new algorithm of reliability assessment for steel civil engineering structures subjected to fire temperatures. This new algorithm is based upon the relative probabilistic entropy concept elaborated by Bhattacharyya, and this probabilistic distance is sought in-between extreme and admissible deformations of some structural beam subjected to higher temperatures. Similar to the First Order Reliability Method, this approach uses the first two probabilistic characteristics of the structural response, when structural output may be modelled with the use of Gaussian distribution. However, up to now this effect has not been quantified in literature. The current study addresses this gap and presents a probabilistic approach for quantitatively assessing this effect. For this purpose, five different stochastic creep models (i.e. Model Code 1999, Model Code 2010, B3, B4, and B4s models) are used under considerations of the historical and future climatic conditions in Sweden to assess the long-term creep coefficient and the subsequent stress redistribution of an axially loaded column. While some creep models show similar percentage increases in the long-term creep coefficient in all Swedish counties, other creep models show higher percentage increase values for northern than for southern counties. The highest increase in the end-of-century creep coefficient is found using models B4 and B4s (e.g. over 40% increase is possible for northernmost Sweden, i.e. Norrbotten county, under RCP8.5). Furthermore, the current article also shows that the end-of-century creep coefficient is more sensitive to uncertainties not related to the climate (i.e. parameter and creep modelling uncertainties) than to climate uncertainty.

The segment finite element model (SFEM) for spatial interaction between the bridge and the ballastless track was used to perform several numerical simulations. The temperature variation induced by solar radiation was evaluated based on the numerical simulations. The results showed that the peak temperature of the system (on the western side of the steel web) was 49.59 Co (at 16:00). Regarding time-varying solar temperature distribution of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system, a difference was found between the western and eastern sides of the steel webs. Finally, the vertical temperature gradient model of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system was established according to the most unfavorable temperature. The results provided a reference for constructing and maintaining a steel-concrete composite box girder equipped with the ballastless track.

In this article, a modification of the MCF method, called DESA (Diagonal Expansion of the Search Area), is proposed. The technique applies a non-uniform extension of the search area when generating a population of normalized energy matrices. The degree of expansion of the search area is controlled by the Diagonal Penalty Factor (DPF). The authors demonstrated the method’s effectiveness on a system that could not be identified in several frequency bands by the classical MCF method. After applying DESA, it was possible to fill in the problematic bands that were missing CLF (coupling loss factor) and DLF (damping loss factor) values. The paper also proposes a way to minimize the errors introduced by using overly high DPF values.

Currently, in the design standards for environmental sampling to assess long-term fatigue damage, the grid-based sampling method is used to scan a rectangular grid of meteorological inputs. However, the required simulation cost increases exponentially with the number of environmental parameters, and considerable time and effort are required to characterise the statistical uncertainty of offshore wind turbine (OWT) systems. In this study, a K-type jacket substructure of an OWT was modelled numerically. Time rather than frequency-domain analyses were conducted because of the high nonlinearity of the OWT system. The Monte Carlo (MC) sampling method is well known for its theoretical convergence, which is independent of dimensionality. Conventional grid-based and MC sampling methods were applied for sampling simulation conditions from the probability distributions of four environmental variables. Approximately 10,000 simulations were conducted to compare the computational efficiencies of the two sampling methods, and the statistical uncertainty of the distribution of fatigue damage was assessed. The uncertainty due to the stochastic processes of the wave and wind loads presented considerable influence on the hot-spot stress of welded tubular joints of the jacket-type substructure. This implies that more simulations for each representative short-term environmental condition are required to derive the characteristic fatigue damage. The characteristic fatigue damage results revealed that the MC sampling method yielded the same error level for Grids 1 and 2 (2443 iterations required for both) after 1437 and 516 iterations for K- and KK-joint cases, respectively. This result indicated that the MC method has the potential for a high convergence rate.

Currently, in the design standards for environmental sampling to assess long-term fatigue damage, the grid-based sampling method is used to scan a rectangular grid of meteorological inputs. However, the required simulation cost increases exponentially with the number of environmental parameters, and considerable time and effort are required to characterise the statistical uncertainty of offshore wind turbine (OWT) systems. In this study, a K-type jacket substructure of an OWT was modelled numerically. Time rather than frequency-domain analyses were conducted because of the high nonlinearity of the OWT system. The Monte Carlo (MC) sampling method is well known for its theoretical convergence, which is independent of dimensionality. Conventional grid-based and MC sampling methods were applied for sampling simulation conditions from the probability distributions of four environmental variables. Approximately 10,000 simulations were conducted to compare the computational efficiencies of the two sampling methods, and the statistical uncertainty of the distribution of fatigue damage was assessed. The uncertainty due to the stochastic processes of the wave and wind loads presented considerable influence on the hot-spot stress of welded tubular joints of the jacket-type substructure. This implies that more simulations for each representative short-term environmental condition are required to derive the characteristic fatigue damage. The characteristic fatigue damage results revealed that the MC sampling method yielded the same error level for Grids 1 and 2 (2443 iterations required for both) after 1437 and 516 iterations for K- and KK-joint cases, respectively. This result indicated that the MC method has the potential for a high convergence rate.

When spalling occurs at a concrete pavement joint, partial depth repair (PDR) is implemented by removing the damaged part of a slab and filling the space with repair materials. However, re-repair is frequently also required because additional distress develops at the boundary of the repaired area due to improper PDR size in addition to poor quality of materials and construction methods. For the sustainability of pavement structures, it is necessary to study the PDR size based on the mechanical theory. Therefore, in this study, the PDR size for spalling was suggested based on the results of laboratory and field tests conducted using the impact echo (IE) method. The dynamic modulus estimated in the laboratory using the IE and forced resonance methods were compared for concrete specimens subjected to repetitive freeze–thaw cycles. In addition, the correlations of the dynamic modulus estimated by the methods with the compressive strength and absorption coefficient were analyzed. As a result, the IE method, for which vibration could be estimated on the same side of the specimen where impaction was applied, was selected for use on the pavement surface. Furthermore, the short-time Fourier transform technique was used instead of the fast Fourier transform, which has been commonly used for nondestructive methods, to minimize the noise in the field and, consequently, to estimate the dynamic modulus more accurately. The dynamic modulus was estimated according to the distance from the spalling end using the IE method at the Korea Expressway Corporation test road to identify the damaged range in the slab based on the severity of spalling. The dynamic modulus, compressive strength, and absorption coefficient tests were conducted in the laboratory for specimens cored from the concrete slab where the field test was performed. Finally, the PDR size was suggested according to the severity of spalling based on the damaged range in the slab, as determined by the field test and laboratory test results.

The construction of NPP in Vietnam will essentially relieve the deficit in energy production. The political leaders of Vietnam reckon upon the further growth of the economy. Energy of Vietnam is now generally held on big HPPs and TPPs. Small hydropower and such renewable energy sources as sun and wind play an important role in energy production. Because of the small amount of falls in the recent years in spite of monsoon climate, HPPs in Vietnam produce energy using not their full capacity. In TPP coal, diesel oil and gas is used as energy resources. The share of coal is still quite big (around 18 %) and coal TPPs have a serious negative impact on the environment. That’s why the specialists count on the development of nuclear energy. The paper presents the plans for the construction of a nuclear power plant "Ninh Thuan" in Vietnam, the alleged NPP project, its advantage over other projects, prerequisites and prospects for cooperation between the Russian and Vietnamese governments in this field.

The aim is here to propose a predictive method in order to evaluate the vibroacoustical behaviour of a plate excited by TBL pressure fluctuations. The ultimate goal is to develop tools for predicting internal cabin noise in an aircraft during flight. Hence TBL is considered. Different TBL models are discussed and compared. A prediction method well suited for mid-high frequencies is also presented. The method called simplified energy method (SEM) is based on local energetic considerations and extends the well-known statistical energy analysis (SEA). Two different SEM formulations are presented. The first one is of heat conduction type, whilst the second is radiative. The TBL source model was integrated in the local energy proposed formulations. When applied to a simple Kirchhoff-Love simply supported plate, SEM allows prediction of averaged energy quantities. Comparisons are drawn between heat and radiative formulations. Good concordance was observed between energy results and pure analytical calculations of the structural response under TBL excitation over a wide frequency range.

A simple, economical and practical impact resistance test method has been developed for high strength fiber reinforced concrete (HSFRC). The results indicated that there is a logarithmic relation between flexural toughness energy (EFT) and impact energy (El) for FRC In this study, three different aspect ratios of hooked-end fibers, namely, 30/0.50; 60/0.80 and 50/0.60 length/diameter (mm/mm) were used. Fibers were added to concrete in four different volume percentages of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 %. From the results it can be said that fibers in high strength concrete improve impact resistance and flexural toughness of concrete. Also a good correlation between flexural toughness energy and impact energy has been established.

The installation of wind energy increased in the last twenty years, as its cost decreased, and it contributes to reducing GHG emissions. A race toward gigantism characterizes wind turbine development, primarily driven by offshore projects. The larger wind turbines are facing higher loads, and the imperatives of mass reduction make them more flexible. Size increase of wind turbines results in higher structural vibrations that reduce the lifetime of the components (blades, main shaft, bearings, generator, gearbox, etc.) and might lead to failure or destruction. This paper aims to present in detail the problems associated with wind turbine vibration and a thorough literature review of the different mitigation solutions. We explore the advantages, drawbacks, and challenges of the existing vibration control systems for wind turbines. These systems belong to six main categories, according to the physical principles used and how they operate to mitigate the vibrations. This paper offers a multi-criteria analysis of a vast number of systems in different phases of development, going from full-scale testing to prototype stage, experiments, research, and ideas.

The main aim of this work is to propose a new algorithm of reliability assessment for steel civil engineering structures subjected to fire temperatures. This new algorithm is based upon the relative probabilistic entropy concept elaborated by Bhattacharyya, and this probabilistic distance is sought in-between extreme and admissible deformations of some structural beam subjected to higher temperatures. Similar to the First Order Reliability Method, this approach uses the first two probabilistic characteristics of the structural response, when structural output may be modelled with the use of Gaussian distribution. The probabilistic structural response is found here using hybrid computational technique–the Finite Element Method system ABAQUS with its fully coupled thermo-elastic analysis with 3D solid elements and probabilistic modules implemented in the computer algebra system MAPLE. The probabilistic response is determined via a triple stochastic analysis, which is based on the classical Monte-Carlo simulation, iterative generalized stochastic perturbation technique, and also using semi-analytical probabilistic calculus. Final determination of the relative entropy in the Serviceability Limit State of the given structure and its comparison with the results obtained using the FORM analysis enables to calibrate this new technique to numerical values proposed in the engineering designing codes. Hence, a more accurate probabilistic method may use some experimental-based admissible values included in the existing design of legal provisions.

However, up to now this effect has not been quantified in literature. The current study addresses this gap and presents a probabilistic approach for quantitatively assessing this effect. For this purpose, five different stochastic creep models (i.e. Model Code 1999, Model Code 2010, B3, B4, and B4s models) are used under considerations of the historical and future climatic conditions in Sweden to assess the long-term creep coefficient and the subsequent stress redistribution of an axially loaded column. While some creep models show similar percentage increases in the long-term creep coefficient in all Swedish counties, other creep models show higher percentage increase values for northern than for southern counties. The highest increase in the end-of-century creep coefficient is found using models B4 and B4s (e.g. over 40% increase is possible for northernmost Sweden, i.e. Norrbotten county, under RCP8.5). Furthermore, the current article also shows that the end-of-century creep coefficient is more sensitive to uncertainties not related to the climate (i.e. parameter and creep modelling uncertainties) than to climate uncertainty.

The segment finite element model (SFEM) for spatial interaction between the bridge and the ballastless track was used to perform several numerical simulations. The temperature variation induced by solar radiation was evaluated based on the numerical simulations. The results showed that the peak temperature of the system (on the western side of the steel web) was 49.59 Co (at 16:00). Regarding time-varying solar temperature distribution of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system, a difference was found between the western and eastern sides of the steel webs. Finally, the vertical temperature gradient model of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system was established according to the most unfavorable temperature. The results provided a reference for constructing and maintaining a steel-concrete composite box girder equipped with the ballastless track.

The segment finite element model (SFEM) for spatial interaction between the bridge and the ballastless track was used to perform several numerical simulations. The temperature variation induced by solar radiation was evaluated based on the numerical simulations. The results showed that the peak temperature of the system (on the western side of the steel web) was 49.59 Co (at 16:00). Regarding time-varying solar temperature distribution of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system, a difference was found between the western and eastern sides of the steel webs. Finally, the vertical temperature gradient model of the steel-concrete composite box girder-ballastless track system was established according to the most unfavorable temperature. The results provided a reference for constructing and maintaining a steel-concrete composite box girder equipped with the ballastless track.

In this article, a modification of the MCF method, called DESA (Diagonal Expansion of the Search Area), is proposed. The technique applies a non-uniform extension of the search area when generating a population of normalized energy matrices. The degree of expansion of the search area is controlled by the Diagonal Penalty Factor (DPF). The authors demonstrated the method’s effectiveness on a system that could not be identified in several frequency bands by the classical MCF method. After applying DESA, it was possible to fill in the problematic bands that were missing CLF (coupling loss factor) and DLF (damping loss factor) values. The paper also proposes a way to minimize the errors introduced by using overly high DPF values.

Currently, in the design standards for environmental sampling to assess long-term fatigue damage, the grid-based sampling method is used to scan a rectangular grid of meteorological inputs. However, the required simulation cost increases exponentially with the number of environmental parameters, and considerable time and effort are required to characterise the statistical uncertainty of offshore wind turbine (OWT) systems. In this study, a K-type jacket substructure of an OWT was modelled numerically. Time rather than frequency-domain analyses were conducted because of the high nonlinearity of the OWT system. The Monte Carlo (MC) sampling method is well known for its theoretical convergence, which is independent of dimensionality. Conventional grid-based and MC sampling methods were applied for sampling simulation conditions from the probability distributions of four environmental variables. Approximately 10,000 simulations were conducted to compare the computational efficiencies of the two sampling methods, and the statistical uncertainty of the distribution of fatigue damage was assessed. The uncertainty due to the stochastic processes of the wave and wind loads presented considerable influence on the hot-spot stress of welded tubular joints of the jacket-type substructure. This implies that more simulations for each representative short-term environmental condition are required to derive the characteristic fatigue damage. The characteristic fatigue damage results revealed that the MC sampling method yielded the same error level for Grids 1 and 2 (2443 iterations required for both) after 1437 and 516 iterations for K- and KK-joint cases, respectively. This result indicated that the MC method has the potential for a high convergence rate.

When spalling occurs at a concrete pavement joint, partial depth repair (PDR) is implemented by removing the damaged part of a slab and filling the space with repair materials. However, re-repair is frequently also required because additional distress develops at the boundary of the repaired area due to improper PDR size in addition to poor quality of materials and construction methods. For the sustainability of pavement structures, it is necessary to study the PDR size based on the mechanical theory. Therefore, in this study, the PDR size for spalling was suggested based on the results of laboratory and field tests conducted using the impact echo (IE) method. The dynamic modulus estimated in the laboratory using the IE and forced resonance methods were compared for concrete specimens subjected to repetitive freeze–thaw cycles. In addition, the correlations of the dynamic modulus estimated by the methods with the compressive strength and absorption coefficient were analyzed. As a result, the IE method, for which vibration could be estimated on the same side of the specimen where impaction was applied, was selected for use on the pavement surface. Furthermore, the short-time Fourier transform technique was used instead of the fast Fourier transform, which has been commonly used for nondestructive methods, to minimize the noise in the field and, consequently, to estimate the dynamic modulus more accurately. The dynamic modulus was estimated according to the distance from the spalling end using the IE method at the Korea Expressway Corporation test road to identify the damaged range in the slab based on the severity of spalling. The dynamic modulus, compressive strength, and absorption coefficient tests were conducted in the laboratory for specimens cored from the concrete slab where the field test was performed. Finally, the PDR size was suggested according to the severity of spalling based on the damaged range in the slab, as determined by the field test and laboratory test results.
