Abstract The interactions between electricity generation sources and industrial production in Greece were analysed from August 2004 to October 2013. Greece has been subject to a tough economic adjustment under external financial assistance guidelines. In the meantime, the country has remained committed to international agreements concerning the use of renewables. The variables interact with each other, and this endogeneity has been analysed using a VECM model. A short-run, causal relationship from conventional fossil sources to economic growth, was proved. However, there is no evidence of causal relationships from renewable electricity to economic growth, either in the short- or long-run. Only economic growth gives rise to renewable electricity, whether in the short- or long-run. A fresh insight on the current state of dynamics between electricity sources within an electricity generation system, is thus added to the literature. These findings will inform energy policymakers in designing policies both to encourage the incorporation of national technology into renewables and to reduce electricity consumption without hampering economic growth.

With the growing population and increasing purchasing power, the sustainability of the food sector is questioned as environmental externalities derive from consumption, mainly the emission of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change. Academic literature has suggested strategies to efficiently manage food consumption, but one of the main implications is to reduce meat consumption. Such a reduction would mitigate climate change and other environmental externalities as well as reduce health-related problems. However, the livestock sector is also a relevant economic sector for the subsistence of any economy. Therefore, this reduction could threaten economic growth. Following a sample of 14 European high-income countries over more than four decades, the impact of food consumption on economic growth is assessed. Results suggest that both meat and plant-based consumption contribute positively to economic growth. Consequently, a reduction in meat consumption could have a negative impact on the economy. However, strategies to both reduce meat consumption and promote economic growth are discussed in line with the results, with plant-based foods as an efficient option to solve the dilemma. Furthermore, specific strategies for both the supply and the demand side, education on food production and consumption are recommended, particularly in primary schools. Children could learn about healthy and sustainable dietary habits that would not hamper economic growth, as these should be the seeds of future consumption habits.

Abstract This study was developed according to a two-step approach. In the first step, we provide an investigation of the changes in eco-efficiency under constant and variable return to scale, while on a second step the evaluation of the decoupling elasticity will be given. The impacts of energy, economic and environmental determinants (inputs) on the performance indicators of eco-efficiency were calculated as the inverse of the carbon intensity (ratio of the GDP over the CO2 emissions, both from the World Development Indicators database), the changes in eco-efficiency and the decoupling elasticity between CO2 emissions, and economic growth changes. Data was used for 16 Latin America countries, according to five-year periods, from 1994 to 2013. For all the five-time span considered, it is worth noting, that the degree of technical efficiency for the Latin America countries is lower than the degree of technological efficiency, thus indicating that a portion of the overall inefficiency is due to the fact that these countries are producing below the production frontier rather than to an inefficient use of technology. On average, the results have confirmed that the technological scale change in energy production is the dominant factor influencing the optimal production frontier in the sample of countries under analysis. Complementarily, according to the mixed results from the decoupling analysis, we may conclude that the increase/decrease of the CO2 per capita emissions was due to other economic and environmental factors rather than to a negative/positive effect of the GDP growth rate.

Abstract Considering that high population and income growths will lead the coming decades, an increase in global food demand is expected. Livestock products, such as meat, are closely related to this trend, but also associated with impacts on the environment and public health, from land and water depletion, to greenhouse gases emissions and higher risks of non-communicable diseases. This trend raises doubts about the sustainability of the food industry and thus a solution is needed for the problem. How to feed the world population without compromising present and future generations. The literature suggests that meat consumption should be reduced for the sake of the environment and global population, however without considering the effects that such reduction would have on the economy. Inspired by these facts, this paper empirically analyses the interactions between food consumption, economic growth and sustainable development (measured by the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare). More specifically the paper assesses the effect that food consumption has on the economy. The econometric analysis applies the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model for 77 countries, further distinguished by their income group, from 1995 to 2013. The findings support that meat consumption has different impacts on economic growth and sustainable development considering different income groups. However, there is an evident dilemma between economic growth and sustainable development since meat consumption has contradictory effects on each. Thus, it is crucial to understand how to promote sustainability, i.e., reducing the environmental externalities and chronic health diseases, without compromising economic growth.

This paper analyses China’s energy consumption and economic growth spillover effects on four world regions: (i) America (North and South); (ii) Europe and Central Asia; (iii) Asia Pacific; and (iv) Africa and the Middle East. An annual aggregated time series by world region, from 1970 to 2016, and an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach were used. The results are consistent with the feedback hypothesis in the short run. With regard to the long run, feedback is present in America and the Asia Pacific. In Europe and Central Asia and in Africa and the Middle East, the results are consistent with the conservation hypothesis. Additionally, China’s spillover effects on the world energy-growth nexus are essentially a long-run phenomenon, with impacts on Europe and Central Asia, Asia Pacific, and Africa and the Middle East. Accordingly, policy-makers should be aware that China’s policies may have impact around the world, which indirectly may cause a restriction in economic growth.

Abstract Australia has celebrated twenty-six consecutive years of economic growth without a recession. Simultaneously, it is one of the ten largest emitters of greenhouse gases (GHG). This paper employed the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index method to provide evidence of the effect of decoupling economic growth from GHG emissions for all Australian sectors and used an efficiency index to provide evidence of the evolution in efficiency of the Australian sectors, over the period 1990–2015. The results obtained indicate that Australia experienced strong decoupling. However, only two of the six sectors (agricultural and commercial services) exhibited strong decoupling, while the others demonstrated weak decoupling. Among these, the agricultural sector performed a dominant role in decoupling, whereas the construction sector made the most marginal contribution. In terms of factors effect, economic activity, followed by energy emissions, were the factors that most contributed to the decoupling. These effects were due to high Australian economic growth, and to high GHG emission reductions in the agricultural sector, respectively. Over the period under analysis, Australia was able to reduce national GHG emissions. With respect to efficiency by sector, the construction sector proved to be the most efficient, while the agricultural sector proved to be the least efficient. Australia should invest more in efficient technology so that all sectors become more efficient while simultaneously continuing to reduce their GHG emissions.

Abstract Environmental protection should be a primary factor in the evolution of the dominant transportation energy paradigm. This paper takes a fresh approach to this issue by analysing the relationship between conventional and alternative energy sources in transportation, economic growth and emissions. This is a previously unexplored topic in literature, particularly in the United States of America (US), which is analysed in detail here. The paper makes a further contribution to the field by an analysis, based on Tapio indicator, of decoupling between economic growth and CO2 emissions resulting from both overall energy consumption and energy consumption by the transportation. Empirically, this paper applies an Autoregressive Distributed Lag model by using monthly data from January 2007 to September 2018. A Decoupling Indicator was calculated by using yearly data from 2006 to 2018. Main findings suggest that alternative energy sources have not yet reducing the dependence of the transportation sector on fossil fuels. Additionally, although the use of renewable fuels by transportation reduces CO2 emissions, it also hampers economic growth, while economic growth has a negative effect on emissions. This finding is further supported by the decoupling statuses found. I Improvements in energy efficiency appear to have been effective for environmental protection.

The impact of China’s financial openness and economic growth on consumption of fossil fuels was analyzed for a panel of ten Latin American countries, throughout 34 years (from 1980 to 2014). An autoregressive distributed lag in the form of unrestricted error correction model was used as the chosen econometric methodology. The results showed that the financial openness, as well as the economic growth of China, increase the fossil fuels consumption in the long-run, while the economic growth of Latin American countries increases the energy use in the short- and the long-run. Moreover, the empirical findings of this research have significant consequences to the local government’s appraisal of the relationship between financial openness, China’s economic growth and consumption of fossil fuels.
