    Until about 1900, large proportions of the world population endured hunger and poverty. The 20th century saw world population increase from 1.6 to 6.1 billion, accompanied and to some extent made possible by rapid improvements in health standards and food supply, with associated advances in agricultural and nutrition sciences. In this paper, I use the application of linear programming (LP) in preparation of rations for farm animals to illustrate a method of calculating the lowest cost of a human diet selected from locally available food items, constrained to provide recommended levels of food energy and nutrients; then, to find a realistic minimum cost, I apply the further constraint that the main sources of food energy in the costed diet are weighted in proportion to the actual reported consumption of food items in that area. Worldwide variations in dietary preferences raise the issue as to the sustainability of popular dietary regimes, and the paper reviews the factors associated with satisfying requirements for adequate nutrition within those regimes. The ultimate physical constraints on food supply are described, together with the ways in which climate change may affect those constraints. During the 20th century, food supply increased sufficiently in most areas to keep pace with the rapid increase in world population. Many challenges will need to be overcome if food supply is to continue to meet demand, and those challenges are made more severe by rising expectations of quality of life in the developing world, as well as by the impacts of climate change on agriculture and aquaculture.

    In this article, we are shining lights on the ecological transition, as a switch from a societal model that prioritizes economic growth towards a model that supports environmental sustainability as well economic prosperity at the same time. We will develop, in an approach foresight, which highlights all the dimensions influencing the role of each individual with respect to his behavior and ecological responsibility. This paper will also identify the determinants of consumer’s ecological behavior in the Moroccan context. It aims to describe a consumer's ecological behavior by taking a responsible decision that guarantees its social responsibility. The innovative benefit of our perception is to integrate the ecological aspect into the dimensions chosen in order to define and further explain a responsible ecological behavior.

    AbstractGlobal biodiversity loss is most severe in freshwaters, particularly in river ecosystems. Hydropower is one of the main culprits. While being promoted as a carbon free source of renewable energy, hydropower disrupts the flow, habitats, and biota of rivers. Environmental policies and programs seek to mitigate the damage hydropower causes. Any policy action aiming at making the utilization of our rivers more sustainable must be ecologically, economically, and legally feasible. We show that the interdisciplinary feasibility of mitigation measures divides existing facilities into three categories (i) large facilities in which biodiversity mitigation measures are needed but electricity generation and balancing the electricity grid should remain as their main focus, (ii) small facilities in which dam removal and full scale river restoration measures can be taken by assisting the facilities to seize operations, preferably just before their next big investments, and (iii) medium facilities where benefits and trade‐offs associated with alternative paths should be analyzed case‐by‐case to determine the most feasible path forward. Policy action is feasible in all three categories but in different ways: requiring fish passes in the case of large facilities, helping remove dams and restoring the rivers in the case of small facilities, and focusing cost–benefit analysis efforts on the non‐trivial group of the medium sized facilities.

    An anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), seeded with a biomass inoculum that previously had not been exposed to the macrolide antimicrobial tylosin (mixture of Tylosin A, B, C, and D), was operated for 3 months with swine waste without Tylosin A and for 9 months with swine waste containing Tylosin A at an average concentration of 1.6 mg/L. When swine waste with tylosin was fed to the ASBR, methane production and volatile solids removal did not appear to be inhibited and a methane yield of 0.47 L methane per gram volatile solids fed to the ASBR was observed. Throughout the operating period, Tylosin A levels in ASBR biomass and effluent were below the detection limit of 0.01 mg/L. However, during the first 3 months of operation, the levels of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB)-resistant bacteria in the ASBR biomass increased substantially as determined by hybridizations with oligonucleotide probes designed to target MLSB-resistant bacteria. Since no Tylosin A was present in the swine waste during the initial 3 months, the presence of MLSB-resistant bacteria in the swine waste was likely the reason for the increase in resistance. Subsequently, the levels of MLSB-resistant bacteria in ASBR biomass stabilized with an average of 44.9% for the 9 months of operation with swine waste containing Tylosin A. The level of MLSB-resistant bacteria in the swine waste fed to the ASBR during this period averaged 18.0%. The results indicate that anaerobic treatment of a waste stream containing tylosin was effective (based on reactor performance) and that the level of resistant bacteria in the ASBR was substantially higher than in the waste stream fed to this system.

    Despite the fundamental role given to the sustainability of intergenerational programming regarding their demonstrated impact on an aging society, only a few studies have undertaken an exploration of the qualitative core dimensions of sustainable intergenerational programs. This article addresses how the sustainability of educational intergenerational programs relates to why and how intergenerational program managers in the Portuguese area of Porto may have developed different attitudes and beliefs around adequate implementation of the programs. Drawing on qualitative interview data of a four-case fieldwork study conducted in Porto, Portugal, the study examines autonomy, empowerment, and intergenerational relationships as dimensions other than time duration behind program sustainability. Attention to the managers’ narratives on how intergenerational programs are implemented can help to explain why some dimensions are more highlighted than others. A qualitative analysis of intergenerational program sustainability, it is argued, offers considerable findings which provide opportunities to its implementation and intersection with managers’ beliefs. Findings suggest a need to de-emphasize both time duration and managers’ persona as the key for sustainability. We recommend intergenerational program sustainability as an area for future theorizing through providing a conceptualizing framework that might go beyond the normative focus on its duration and into the relational nature of these programs.

    The exploitation of natural resources for agriculture is growing to fulfill the demand for food, which requires the rational use of inputs for sustainable production. Brazilian agricultural production stands out on the international scene. For instance, corn is one of the most exported products in Brazil, which is possible through the planting in the second crop season within a year, called the “off-season”. In addition to being a technique that allows soil conservation, it also reduces the use of inputs and soil tillage. The agricultural production systems require a large amount of energy throughout their processes, mainly through inputs and fuels. Energy flows allow for the identification of the efficiency of the production system and, consequently, its sustainability. Indicators regarding net energy gain per area (Energy balance) and energy profitability (Energy Return on Investment) were applied. The first-season system presented higher energy demand when compared to the second-season system, with a difference of 10.24 GJ ha−1 between the conventional ones and 10.47 GJ ha−1 between the transgenic ones. However, the indicators showed higher energy efficiency in the transgenic off-season corn production, in which the return on energy was 55% higher, and the energy incorporation was 35% lower when compared to conventional first-season corn.

    Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a microbial storage biopolymer that can be used in biodegradable plastics. This study investigates the effects of two carbon substrates (acetate and propionate) on PHA production using sludge from a wastewater treatment plant in terms of their microbial communities, PHA contents, polymer compositions and structures, and thermal characteristics of the PHA. Sludge was enriched aerobically with acetate or propionate in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) under feast/famine feeding conditions. The sludge enriched with acetate produced a homopolymer of hydroxybutyrate (HB) and accumulated a maximum PHA of 44.78% gPHA/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). In contrast, the sludge enriched with propionate produced a copolymer of HB and hydroxyvalerate (HV) and accumulated a maximum PHA of 12.65% gPHA/gMLSS. The results from the microbial community analysis using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed that bacteria belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes and class Alphaproteobacteria appeared to be dominant in the system fed with acetate when PHA content was at its maximum. In contrast, Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria were dominant in the system fed with propionate when the PHA content was at its maximum.     Abstract Increasing environmental concerns regarding fossil fuels and potential future supply constraints have driven the exploration of alternative fuel resources. Using syngas to produce biofuels through microbial fermentation processes provides an excellent option for the synthesis of fuels and chemicals in a clean and sustainable way. The fermentation of syngas by anaerobic acetogens via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway has attracted considerable interest to for the production of biofuels. The major natural fermentation products of these bacteria are acetate, butyrate, ethanol, butanol, and 2,3-butanediol, which can be used directly or serve as precursors for biofuel and industrial chemical production. However, the widespread use of acetogens as production biocatalysts has been partially limited by their metabolic and energetic constraints for efficient conversion of syngas into target products. A comprehensive understanding of the cellular biology that enables syngas fermentation by these versatile microorganisms is necessary to model the electron and carbon flow in specific production routes, which can contribute substantially to design strategies for acetogen cell engineering and to optimize these technologies to an industrially attractive production level. In this review, we summarize the metabolic and energy conservation mechanisms of most known acetogens during syngas fermentation and discuss parameters that can be modulated to improve their metabolic efficiencies. Finally, the potential to utilize metabolic engineering to improve the spectrum of acetogen products is discussed. This will be helpful in developing acetogens as efficient syngas fermentation biocatalysts for biofuel production in large-scale industrial processes and therefore act as a novel microbial production platform that is both environmentally safe and sustainable.

In this study, we propose to investigate the prospects of cation-substitution within the A-site of the APbI3 perovskite by selecting nine substituting organic and inorganic cations to enhance the stability of the material. The tolerance and the octahedral factors are calculated and reported as two of the most critical geometrical features, in order to assess which perovskite compounds can be experimentally designed. Our results showed an improvement in the thermal stability of the organic cation substitutions in contrast to the inorganic cations, with an increase in the power conversion efficiency of the Hydroxyl-ammonium (NH3OH) substitute to η = 25.84%.

    Recycling the arsenic-rich biomass of Pteris vittata is a critical problem during phytoremediation primarily because of the low value and high risk of arsenic-rich biomass. Nevertheless, extracts of P. vittata have been found to have a variety of bio-activities (e.g., anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial) and abundant valuable bio-active compositions (e.g., flavonoids), which might present a new solution for the recycling of P. vittata harvests. This work demonstrated a pilot-scale experiment to extract and purify the phenolic compounds from 1 t of arsenic-rich P. vittata biomass. Result showed that 47.9 kg of phenolic-rich extract with a potential value of US$908.66-8345.14 was obtained. This extract showed no acute oral toxicities (LD50 > 10 g/kg), no skin irritation, and no chronic risks in the long-term skin contact exposure pathways. All of the wastes from production have been recycled and safely disposed with low cost (US$28.44), and the cost may be further reduced. The calculated benefits from this method showed a potential to provide 995-53,050 US$/hm2 per year to a phytoremediation project. Therefore, this strategy could address the issue of expensive phytoremediation.

    Until about 1900, large proportions of the world population endured hunger and poverty. The 20th century saw world population increase from 1.6 to 6.1 billion, accompanied and to some extent made possible by rapid improvements in health standards and food supply, with associated advances in agricultural and nutrition sciences. In this paper, I use the application of linear programming (LP) in preparation of rations for farm animals to illustrate a method of calculating the lowest cost of a human diet selected from locally available food items, constrained to provide recommended levels of food energy and nutrients; then, to find a realistic minimum cost, I apply the further constraint that the main sources of food energy in the costed diet are weighted in proportion to the actual reported consumption of food items in that area. Worldwide variations in dietary preferences raise the issue as to the sustainability of popular dietary regimes, and the paper reviews the factors associated with satisfying requirements for adequate nutrition within those regimes. The ultimate physical constraints on food supply are described, together with the ways in which climate change may affect those constraints. During the 20th century, food supply increased sufficiently in most areas to keep pace with the rapid increase in world population. Many challenges will need to be overcome if food supply is to continue to meet demand, and those challenges are made more severe by rising expectations of quality of life in the developing world, as well as by the impacts of climate change on agriculture and aquaculture.

    In this article, we are shining lights on the ecological transition, as a switch from a societal model that prioritizes economic growth towards a model that supports environmental sustainability as well economic prosperity at the same time. We will develop, in an approach foresight, which highlights all the dimensions influencing the role of each individual with respect to his behavior and ecological responsibility. This paper will also identify the determinants of consumer’s ecological behavior in the Moroccan context. It aims to describe a consumer's ecological behavior by taking a responsible decision that guarantees its social responsibility. The innovative benefit of our perception is to integrate the ecological aspect into the dimensions chosen in order to define and further explain a responsible ecological behavior.

    AbstractGlobal biodiversity loss is most severe in freshwaters, particularly in river ecosystems. Hydropower is one of the main culprits. While being promoted as a carbon free source of renewable energy, hydropower disrupts the flow, habitats, and biota of rivers. Environmental policies and programs seek to mitigate the damage hydropower causes. Any policy action aiming at making the utilization of our rivers more sustainable must be ecologically, economically, and legally feasible. We show that the interdisciplinary feasibility of mitigation measures divides existing facilities into three categories (i) large facilities in which biodiversity mitigation measures are needed but electricity generation and balancing the electricity grid should remain as their main focus, (ii) small facilities in which dam removal and full scale river restoration measures can be taken by assisting the facilities to seize operations, preferably just before their next big investments, and (iii) medium facilities where benefits and trade‐offs associated with alternative paths should be analyzed case‐by‐case to determine the most feasible path forward. Policy action is feasible in all three categories but in different ways: requiring fish passes in the case of large facilities, helping remove dams and restoring the rivers in the case of small facilities, and focusing cost–benefit analysis efforts on the non‐trivial group of the medium sized facilities.

    An anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), seeded with a biomass inoculum that previously had not been exposed to the macrolide antimicrobial tylosin (mixture of Tylosin A, B, C, and D), was operated for 3 months with swine waste without Tylosin A and for 9 months with swine waste containing Tylosin A at an average concentration of 1.6 mg/L. When swine waste with tylosin was fed to the ASBR, methane production and volatile solids removal did not appear to be inhibited and a methane yield of 0.47 L methane per gram volatile solids fed to the ASBR was observed. Throughout the operating period, Tylosin A levels in ASBR biomass and effluent were below the detection limit of 0.01 mg/L. However, during the first 3 months of operation, the levels of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB)-resistant bacteria in the ASBR biomass increased substantially as determined by hybridizations with oligonucleotide probes designed to target MLSB-resistant bacteria. Since no Tylosin A was present in the swine waste during the initial 3 months, the presence of MLSB-resistant bacteria in the swine waste was likely the reason for the increase in resistance. Subsequently, the levels of MLSB-resistant bacteria in ASBR biomass stabilized with an average of 44.9% for the 9 months of operation with swine waste containing Tylosin A. The level of MLSB-resistant bacteria in the swine waste fed to the ASBR during this period averaged 18.0%. The results indicate that anaerobic treatment of a waste stream containing tylosin was effective (based on reactor performance) and that the level of resistant bacteria in the ASBR was substantially higher than in the waste stream fed to this system.

    Despite the fundamental role given to the sustainability of intergenerational programming regarding their demonstrated impact on an aging society, only a few studies have undertaken an exploration of the qualitative core dimensions of sustainable intergenerational programs. This article addresses how the sustainability of educational intergenerational programs relates to why and how intergenerational program managers in the Portuguese area of Porto may have developed different attitudes and beliefs around adequate implementation of the programs. Drawing on qualitative interview data of a four-case fieldwork study conducted in Porto, Portugal, the study examines autonomy, empowerment, and intergenerational relationships as dimensions other than time duration behind program sustainability. Attention to the managers’ narratives on how intergenerational programs are implemented can help to explain why some dimensions are more highlighted than others. A qualitative analysis of intergenerational program sustainability, it is argued, offers considerable findings which provide opportunities to its implementation and intersection with managers’ beliefs. Findings suggest a need to de-emphasize both time duration and managers’ persona as the key for sustainability. We recommend intergenerational program sustainability as an area for future theorizing through providing a conceptualizing framework that might go beyond the normative focus on its duration and into the relational nature of these programs.

    The exploitation of natural resources for agriculture is growing to fulfill the demand for food, which requires the rational use of inputs for sustainable production. Brazilian agricultural production stands out on the international scene. For instance, corn is one of the most exported products in Brazil, which is possible through the planting in the second crop season within a year, called the “off-season”. In addition to being a technique that allows soil conservation, it also reduces the use of inputs and soil tillage. The agricultural production systems require a large amount of energy throughout their processes, mainly through inputs and fuels. Energy flows allow for the identification of the efficiency of the production system and, consequently, its sustainability. Indicators regarding net energy gain per area (Energy balance) and energy profitability (Energy Return on Investment) were applied. The first-season system presented higher energy demand when compared to the second-season system, with a difference of 10.24 GJ ha−1 between the conventional ones and 10.47 GJ ha−1 between the transgenic ones. However, the indicators showed higher energy efficiency in the transgenic off-season corn production, in which the return on energy was 55% higher, and the energy incorporation was 35% lower when compared to conventional first-season corn.

    Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a microbial storage biopolymer that can be used in biodegradable plastics. This study investigates the effects of two carbon substrates (acetate and propionate) on PHA production using sludge from a wastewater treatment plant in terms of their microbial communities, PHA contents, polymer compositions and structures, and thermal characteristics of the PHA. Sludge was enriched aerobically with acetate or propionate in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) under feast/famine feeding conditions. The sludge enriched with acetate produced a homopolymer of hydroxybutyrate (HB) and accumulated a maximum PHA of 44.78% gPHA/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). In contrast, the sludge enriched with propionate produced a copolymer of HB and hydroxyvalerate (HV) and accumulated a maximum PHA of 12.65% gPHA/gMLSS. The results from the microbial community analysis using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed that bacteria belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes and class Alphaproteobacteria appeared to be dominant in the system fed with acetate when PHA content was at its maximum. In contrast, Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria were dominant in the system fed with propionate when the PHA content was at its maximum.     Abstract Increasing environmental concerns regarding fossil fuels and potential future supply constraints have driven the exploration of alternative fuel resources. Using syngas to produce biofuels through microbial fermentation processes provides an excellent option for the synthesis of fuels and chemicals in a clean and sustainable way. The fermentation of syngas by anaerobic acetogens via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway has attracted considerable interest to for the production of biofuels. The major natural fermentation products of these bacteria are acetate, butyrate, ethanol, butanol, and 2,3-butanediol, which can be used directly or serve as precursors for biofuel and industrial chemical production. However, the widespread use of acetogens as production biocatalysts has been partially limited by their metabolic and energetic constraints for efficient conversion of syngas into target products. A comprehensive understanding of the cellular biology that enables syngas fermentation by these versatile microorganisms is necessary to model the electron and carbon flow in specific production routes, which can contribute substantially to design strategies for acetogen cell engineering and to optimize these technologies to an industrially attractive production level. In this review, we summarize the metabolic and energy conservation mechanisms of most known acetogens during syngas fermentation and discuss parameters that can be modulated to improve their metabolic efficiencies. Finally, the potential to utilize metabolic engineering to improve the spectrum of acetogen products is discussed. This will be helpful in developing acetogens as efficient syngas fermentation biocatalysts for biofuel production in large-scale industrial processes and therefore act as a novel microbial production platform that is both environmentally safe and sustainable.

    Higher power conversion efficiencies for photovoltaic devices can be achieved through simple and low production cost processing of APbI3(A=CH3NH3,CHN2H4,…) perovskites. Due to their limited long-term stability, however, there is an urgent need to find alternative structural combinations for this family of materials. In this study, we propose to investigate the prospects of cation-substitution within the A-site of the APbI3 perovskite by selecting nine substituting organic and inorganic cations to enhance the stability of the material. The tolerance and the octahedral factors are calculated and reported as two of the most critical geometrical features, in order to assess which perovskite compounds can be experimentally designed. Our results showed an improvement in the thermal stability of the organic cation substitutions in contrast to the inorganic cations, with an increase in the power conversion efficiency of the Hydroxyl-ammonium (NH3OH) substitute to η = 25.84%.

    Recycling the arsenic-rich biomass of Pteris vittata is a critical problem during phytoremediation primarily because of the low value and high risk of arsenic-rich biomass. Nevertheless, extracts of P. vittata have been found to have a variety of bio-activities (e.g., anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial) and abundant valuable bio-active compositions (e.g., flavonoids), which might present a new solution for the recycling of P. vittata harvests. This work demonstrated a pilot-scale experiment to extract and purify the phenolic compounds from 1 t of arsenic-rich P. vittata biomass. Result showed that 47.9 kg of phenolic-rich extract with a potential value of US$908.66-8345.14 was obtained. This extract showed no acute oral toxicities (LD50 > 10 g/kg), no skin irritation, and no chronic risks in the long-term skin contact exposure pathways. All of the wastes from production have been recycled and safely disposed with low cost (US$28.44), and the cost may be further reduced. The calculated benefits from this method showed a potential to provide 995-53,050 US$/hm2 per year to a phytoremediation project. Therefore, this strategy could address the issue of expensive phytoremediation.
