The conversion of methane into liquid biofuels using methane-consuming bacteria, known as methanotrophs, contributes to sustainable development, as it mitigates the problem of climate change caused by greenhouse gases and aids in producing cleaner and renewable energy. In the present research, an efficient methanotroph, Methylosarcina sp. LC-4, was studied as a prospective organism for biodiesel production using methane. The methane uptake rate by the organism was enhanced 1.6 times and 2.35 times by supplementing LC-4 with micronutrients, such as copper and tungstate, respectively. This unique ability of the isolated organism enables the deployment of methanotrophs-based processes in various industrial applications. A Plackett–Burman statistical (PBD) design was used to quantify the role of the micronutrients and other media components present in the nitrate minimal salt media (NMS) in biomass and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yields. Nitrate, phosphate, and tungstate had a positive effect, whereas copper, magnesium, and salinity had a negative effect. The modified NMS media, formulated according to the results from the PBD analysis, increased the FAME yield (mg/L) by 85.7%, with the FAME content of 13 ± 1% (w/w) among the highest reported in methanotrophs. The obtained FAME consisted majorly (~90%) of C14–C18 saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, making it suitable for use as biodiesel.

The current studies on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the impacts on public health focus mainly on evaluating CO2 emissions from two types of emission sources. The first is a fixed source type from industrial plants, which can be controlled or easily evaluated. The second is a mobile source type from the transport sector, especially from medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs), which produce high emissions. However, the common methods of evaluation of the average value of CO2 emissions per kilometer of a vehicle use a general Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) model that does not consider the topography or road conditions. This affects the accuracy of CO2 emission assessments and, in turn, affects the accuracy of any analysis needed to establish health policies and the management of public health within the affected area. In this paper, therefore, we present the development of emission coefficient calculations with varying topography conditions for MHDVs with consideration of the health effects on the populace. The study area was the Asian highway network in Thailand that passes through all regions and is geographically diverse. Data were collected from the Department of Highway’s records, global positioning system (GPS) and electronic control unit (ECU) with data consisting of road data, slope, distance, traffic level and vehicle weight, as well as fuel consumption along the transportation route. To analyze and map out the correlation of the CO2 emission coefficients for each road slope, we determined the coefficient of the CO2 emissions using multiple linear regression analysis and validated this using Huber–White robust standard errors for heteroscedasticity. This method was more cost-efficient and time-efficient compared to the conventional approaches. We also created CO2 emission maps with risk points for health effects, and we propose policy designs and plans to manage the traffic level in each of these areas prone to higher levels of such emissions.

Most municipal solid waste (MSW) in Russia is disposed of in landfills, and only a relatively small fraction is recycled. The landfilling of waste leads to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and air and groundwater pollution. However, recently, there have been some initiatives to improve waste management in the country. We assessed the economic and environmental benefits of waste recycling in the Murmansk region, in which a new waste recycling plant has been operating since 2019. We found that MSW recycling in the Murmansk region has induced a small, positive, job creation effect and could potentially lead to a non-negligible reduction in GHG emissions. Extrapolating the results from this case study to the country level, we found that recycling landfilled MSW in Russia could save approximately 154 million tons of GHG emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents annually, which is comparable to the total CO2 emissions from Algeria. The positive environmental and health-related impacts from the extensive implementation of MSW recycling in the country could be substantial. From this case study, we also learned that one of the biggest challenges for the waste recycling company in the Murmansk region is finding profitable markets for recycled materials. Moreover, due to the high investment and operational costs, recycling MSW led to a substantial increase in communal fees. However, there is potential to make waste recycling more cost effective. Most MSW in the Murmansk region is still separated at the recycling plant, while separating waste at the source could substantially reduce operational costs. Other challenges in the large-scale implementation of MSW recycling in Russia, such as a lack of investments and the population’s willingness to recycle waste, are also discussed.

In the backdrop of the ‘dual carbon goal’, which aims to promote sustainable development of China, adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs) is an important measure to help improve the environment, so it is of great significance to investigate the purchase intention of NEVs. Previous studies have established that subsidies and various product attributes could affect consumers’ purchase intention toward NEVs. As government subsidies have been on the decline in recent years, product attributes of NEVs need to be given more attention. However, there have been limited studies that quantitatively analyze the impact of product attributes of NEVs on purchase intention. Therefore, to fill this gap and help further expand the NEV market, this study investigated consumers’ adoption of NEVs empirically from the perception of product attributes. A questionnaire survey and structural equation model (SEM) were used for data collection and analysis. The results indicate that (1) both the functional and symbolic attributes of NEVs had a significant positive impact on consumers’ purchase intention; (2) both the functional and symbolic attributes of NEVs had a significant positive impact on consumers’ purchase intention through consumers’ perceived value; and (3) citizens’ environmental awareness positively moderated the relationship between products attributes and purchase intention. According to the results, to meet consumers’ needs of daily driving and self-image expression, new energy vehicle enterprises need to focus on improving the products in both functional and symbolic aspects by using various marketing strategies.

Sea environments harbor a wide variety of life forms that have adapted to live in hard and sometimes extreme conditions. Among the marine living organisms, extremophiles represent a group of microorganisms that attract increasing interest in relation to their ability to produce an array of molecules that enable them to thrive in almost every marine environment. Extremophiles can be found in virtually every extreme environment on Earth, since they can tolerate very harsh environmental conditions in terms of temperature, pH, pressure, radiation, etc. Marine extremophiles are the focus of growing interest in relation to their ability to produce biotechnologically useful enzymes, the so-called extremozymes. Thanks to their resistance to temperature, pH, salt, and pollutants, marine extremozymes are promising biocatalysts for new and sustainable industrial processes, thus representing an opportunity for several biotechnological applications. Since the marine microbioma, i.e., the complex of microorganisms living in sea environments, is still largely unexplored finding new species is a central issue for green biotechnology. Here we described the main marine environments where extremophiles can be found, some existing or potential biotechnological applications of marine extremozymes for biofuels production and bioremediation, and some possible approaches for the search of new biotechnologically useful species from marine environments.

Currently, Mexico is facing an energy transition, therefore updated policy regulations pertaining to the sustainable use of biomass are needed. In particular, policy that favors the sustainable use of biomass to produce energy and bioproducts to privilege climate change mitigation is needed. This review describes the use of maguey (Agave spp.) and nopal (Opuntia spp.; also known as “cactus”) for biofuel production, especially in marginal areas. Emphasis is given on documented case studies discussing features of production and cultivation for both maguey and nopal, in addition to their potential for fuel production. Environmental and social sustainability issues in terms of waste value and new opportunities as bioenergy feedstocks and byproducts are also discussed. Although the paper does not deeply describe aspects of biomass transformation, such as bioprocess configurations, it gives characteristics of production in addition to cultivation. Agave and Opuntia species may represent a suitable feedstock for biofuels, bioproducts, bioenergy and biorefineries, especially in dry lands (semi-arid and dry sub-humid), deforested areas, agroforestry systems and agricultural semi-terraces known as metepantle in Mexico.

An online survey was conducted to evaluate users’ behaviour and the potential of an open loop recycling project for old ropes. The results of the LCA study show that the production of the base material, polyamide 6, has, at 50%, the highest impact on the total global warming potential of 46.6 kg CO2-eq. per climbing rope and on most of the other environmental issues. At present, there is no practical alternative for a base material. However, the survey indicated a high willingness of climbers to return their ropes for the purpose of recycling. If all old ropes stored at home or being used for non-climbing purposes in Switzerland were to be recycled, 1170 t CO2-eq. could be saved by substituting primary material and avoiding waste incineration.

A marathon is a grueling endurance race, and runners are at risk of heatstroke. Therefore, the thermal environment of the marathon course should be accurately assessed. Solar radiation, a factor in the thermal environment, is particularly affected by the surrounding environment. In this study, we proposed a method to calculate wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) in a short period of time using geographic information system (GIS) data, considering changes in solar radiation. WBGT is used as an indicator of heat stroke. This method was used to assess the risk of heat stroke due to weather conditions, span of time, and location on the marathon course of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. According to the analysis results, in Sapporo, trees and buildings can suppress WBGT by about 2 °C, but on days when the average temperature exceeded 26 °C, WBGT exceeded 21 °C from 5:00 to 13:00. On the contrary, even in August, the hottest month of the year, there were days when WBGT was almost always below 21 °C from 5:00 to 13:00. In other words, it is concluded that the risk of heat stroke can be reduced if the marathon is held in accordance with the weather conditions of the day. In addition, by mapping and identifying locations where there is little change in attenuated WBGT, it is possible to identify locations where the thermal environment should be improved.

A bicycle-sharing system (BSS) has been implemented in Seoul, South Korea to promote green transportation policy as a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to mitigate climate change, reduce traffic jams, and promote physical activity. However, the concentration of air pollutants in Seoul often exceeds the standards of the World Health Organization, thereby creating a conflict with SDG 3 (Health). Therefore, it is important to recognize the trade-offs between actions targeted at SDGs as they might offset each other. In this context, a primary concern is investigating how the behavior of BSS users regarding outdoor air pollution appears. This study explores the relationship between ambient air pollution and the behavior of BSS riders in Seoul. We conducted a time-series analysis of associations between particulate air pollution and participation in the BSS. We used generalized additive models, adjusted for mean temperature, humidity, rainfall, day of the week, long-term trends, and seasonality to construct an exposure–response relationship. We observed a nonlinear relationship between increasing air pollution and bicycle ridership. This study method can be used as a basis for similar analyses to investigate BSS policies in other cities.

Due to the expansion in the global population, there is an increase in animal protein demand and waste generation. Currently, food waste derived from supermarkets, etc., which is used to produce biogas, is collected separately and can contain (micro)plastics deriving from food packaging, imposing potential risks to the environment. A possible solution to address protein, waste and plastic concerns can potentially be achieved by rearing black soldier fly (BSF) larvae on such substrates. In this study, we investigated the effect of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (micro)plastics on the growth, survival, and bioconversion of BSF larvae. On the other hand, the impact of the larvae on the polymer structure and degradation was also assessed. This was carried out by rearing BSF larvae on artificial food waste spiked with micro-, meso-, and macroplastics, while measuring larval growth, survival, and bioconversion parameters. The remaining plastics were collected and analysed upon changes and degradation of their polymer structure. Generally, BSF larvae were not affected in terms of growth performance (179.9–210.4 mg), survival (77.1–87.3%), and bioconversion (FCR: 4.65–5.53) by the presence of (micro)plastics in the substrates. Furthermore, the larvae were also unable to significantly alter the polymer structure of the used plastic.

The conversion of methane into liquid biofuels using methane-consuming bacteria, known as methanotrophs, contributes to sustainable development, as it mitigates the problem of climate change caused by greenhouse gases and aids in producing cleaner and renewable energy. In the present research, an efficient methanotroph, Methylosarcina sp. LC-4, was studied as a prospective organism for biodiesel production using methane. The methane uptake rate by the organism was enhanced 1.6 times and 2.35 times by supplementing LC-4 with micronutrients, such as copper and tungstate, respectively. This unique ability of the isolated organism enables the deployment of methanotrophs-based processes in various industrial applications. A Plackett–Burman statistical (PBD) design was used to quantify the role of the micronutrients and other media components present in the nitrate minimal salt media (NMS) in biomass and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yields. Nitrate, phosphate, and tungstate had a positive effect, whereas copper, magnesium, and salinity had a negative effect. The modified NMS media, formulated according to the results from the PBD analysis, increased the FAME yield (mg/L) by 85.7%, with the FAME content of 13 ± 1% (w/w) among the highest reported in methanotrophs. The obtained FAME consisted majorly (~90%) of C14–C18 saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, making it suitable for use as biodiesel.

The current studies on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the impacts on public health focus mainly on evaluating CO2 emissions from two types of emission sources. The first is a fixed source type from industrial plants, which can be controlled or easily evaluated. The second is a mobile source type from the transport sector, especially from medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs), which produce high emissions. However, the common methods of evaluation of the average value of CO2 emissions per kilometer of a vehicle use a general Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) model that does not consider the topography or road conditions. This affects the accuracy of CO2 emission assessments and, in turn, affects the accuracy of any analysis needed to establish health policies and the management of public health within the affected area. In this paper, therefore, we present the development of emission coefficient calculations with varying topography conditions for MHDVs with consideration of the health effects on the populace. The study area was the Asian highway network in Thailand that passes through all regions and is geographically diverse. Data were collected from the Department of Highway’s records, global positioning system (GPS) and electronic control unit (ECU) with data consisting of road data, slope, distance, traffic level and vehicle weight, as well as fuel consumption along the transportation route. To analyze and map out the correlation of the CO2 emission coefficients for each road slope, we determined the coefficient of the CO2 emissions using multiple linear regression analysis and validated this using Huber–White robust standard errors for heteroscedasticity. This method was more cost-efficient and time-efficient compared to the conventional approaches. We also created CO2 emission maps with risk points for health effects, and we propose policy designs and plans to manage the traffic level in each of these areas prone to higher levels of such emissions.

Most municipal solid waste (MSW) in Russia is disposed of in landfills, and only a relatively small fraction is recycled. The landfilling of waste leads to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and air and groundwater pollution. However, recently, there have been some initiatives to improve waste management in the country. We assessed the economic and environmental benefits of waste recycling in the Murmansk region, in which a new waste recycling plant has been operating since 2019. We found that MSW recycling in the Murmansk region has induced a small, positive, job creation effect and could potentially lead to a non-negligible reduction in GHG emissions. Extrapolating the results from this case study to the country level, we found that recycling landfilled MSW in Russia could save approximately 154 million tons of GHG emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents annually, which is comparable to the total CO2 emissions from Algeria. The positive environmental and health-related impacts from the extensive implementation of MSW recycling in the country could be substantial. From this case study, we also learned that one of the biggest challenges for the waste recycling company in the Murmansk region is finding profitable markets for recycled materials. Moreover, due to the high investment and operational costs, recycling MSW led to a substantial increase in communal fees. However, there is potential to make waste recycling more cost effective. Most MSW in the Murmansk region is still separated at the recycling plant, while separating waste at the source could substantially reduce operational costs. Other challenges in the large-scale implementation of MSW recycling in Russia, such as a lack of investments and the population’s willingness to recycle waste, are also discussed.

In the backdrop of the ‘dual carbon goal’, which aims to promote sustainable development of China, adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs) is an important measure to help improve the environment, so it is of great significance to investigate the purchase intention of NEVs. Previous studies have established that subsidies and various product attributes could affect consumers’ purchase intention toward NEVs. As government subsidies have been on the decline in recent years, product attributes of NEVs need to be given more attention. However, there have been limited studies that quantitatively analyze the impact of product attributes of NEVs on purchase intention. Therefore, to fill this gap and help further expand the NEV market, this study investigated consumers’ adoption of NEVs empirically from the perception of product attributes. A questionnaire survey and structural equation model (SEM) were used for data collection and analysis. The results indicate that (1) both the functional and symbolic attributes of NEVs had a significant positive impact on consumers’ purchase intention; (2) both the functional and symbolic attributes of NEVs had a significant positive impact on consumers’ purchase intention through consumers’ perceived value; and (3) citizens’ environmental awareness positively moderated the relationship between products attributes and purchase intention. According to the results, to meet consumers’ needs of daily driving and self-image expression, new energy vehicle enterprises need to focus on improving the products in both functional and symbolic aspects by using various marketing strategies.

Sea environments harbor a wide variety of life forms that have adapted to live in hard and sometimes extreme conditions. Among the marine living organisms, extremophiles represent a group of microorganisms that attract increasing interest in relation to their ability to produce an array of molecules that enable them to thrive in almost every marine environment. Extremophiles can be found in virtually every extreme environment on Earth, since they can tolerate very harsh environmental conditions in terms of temperature, pH, pressure, radiation, etc. Marine extremophiles are the focus of growing interest in relation to their ability to produce biotechnologically useful enzymes, the so-called extremozymes. Thanks to their resistance to temperature, pH, salt, and pollutants, marine extremozymes are promising biocatalysts for new and sustainable industrial processes, thus representing an opportunity for several biotechnological applications. Since the marine microbioma, i.e., the complex of microorganisms living in sea environments, is still largely unexplored finding new species is a central issue for green biotechnology. Here we described the main marine environments where extremophiles can be found, some existing or potential biotechnological applications of marine extremozymes for biofuels production and bioremediation, and some possible approaches for the search of new biotechnologically useful species from marine environments.

Currently, Mexico is facing an energy transition, therefore updated policy regulations pertaining to the sustainable use of biomass are needed. In particular, policy that favors the sustainable use of biomass to produce energy and bioproducts to privilege climate change mitigation is needed. This review describes the use of maguey (Agave spp.) and nopal (Opuntia spp.; also known as “cactus”) for biofuel production, especially in marginal areas. Emphasis is given on documented case studies discussing features of production and cultivation for both maguey and nopal, in addition to their potential for fuel production. Environmental and social sustainability issues in terms of waste value and new opportunities as bioenergy feedstocks and byproducts are also discussed. Although the paper does not deeply describe aspects of biomass transformation, such as bioprocess configurations, it gives characteristics of production in addition to cultivation. Agave and Opuntia species may represent a suitable feedstock for biofuels, bioproducts, bioenergy and biorefineries, especially in dry lands (semi-arid and dry sub-humid), deforested areas, agroforestry systems and agricultural semi-terraces known as metepantle in Mexico.

An online survey was conducted to evaluate users’ behaviour and the potential of an open loop recycling project for old ropes. The results of the LCA study show that the production of the base material, polyamide 6, has, at 50%, the highest impact on the total global warming potential of 46.6 kg CO2-eq. per climbing rope and on most of the other environmental issues. At present, there is no practical alternative for a base material. However, the survey indicated a high willingness of climbers to return their ropes for the purpose of recycling. If all old ropes stored at home or being used for non-climbing purposes in Switzerland were to be recycled, 1170 t CO2-eq. could be saved by substituting primary material and avoiding waste incineration.

A marathon is a grueling endurance race, and runners are at risk of heatstroke. Therefore, the thermal environment of the marathon course should be accurately assessed. Solar radiation, a factor in the thermal environment, is particularly affected by the surrounding environment. In this study, we proposed a method to calculate wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) in a short period of time using geographic information system (GIS) data, considering changes in solar radiation. WBGT is used as an indicator of heat stroke. This method was used to assess the risk of heat stroke due to weather conditions, span of time, and location on the marathon course of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. According to the analysis results, in Sapporo, trees and buildings can suppress WBGT by about 2 °C, but on days when the average temperature exceeded 26 °C, WBGT exceeded 21 °C from 5:00 to 13:00. On the contrary, even in August, the hottest month of the year, there were days when WBGT was almost always below 21 °C from 5:00 to 13:00. In other words, it is concluded that the risk of heat stroke can be reduced if the marathon is held in accordance with the weather conditions of the day. In addition, by mapping and identifying locations where there is little change in attenuated WBGT, it is possible to identify locations where the thermal environment should be improved.

A bicycle-sharing system (BSS) has been implemented in Seoul, South Korea to promote green transportation policy as a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to mitigate climate change, reduce traffic jams, and promote physical activity. However, the concentration of air pollutants in Seoul often exceeds the standards of the World Health Organization, thereby creating a conflict with SDG 3 (Health). Therefore, it is important to recognize the trade-offs between actions targeted at SDGs as they might offset each other. In this context, a primary concern is investigating how the behavior of BSS users regarding outdoor air pollution appears. This study explores the relationship between ambient air pollution and the behavior of BSS riders in Seoul. We conducted a time-series analysis of associations between particulate air pollution and participation in the BSS. We used generalized additive models, adjusted for mean temperature, humidity, rainfall, day of the week, long-term trends, and seasonality to construct an exposure–response relationship. We observed a nonlinear relationship between increasing air pollution and bicycle ridership. This study method can be used as a basis for similar analyses to investigate BSS policies in other cities.

Due to the expansion in the global population, there is an increase in animal protein demand and waste generation. Currently, food waste derived from supermarkets, etc., which is used to produce biogas, is collected separately and can contain (micro)plastics deriving from food packaging, imposing potential risks to the environment. A possible solution to address protein, waste and plastic concerns can potentially be achieved by rearing black soldier fly (BSF) larvae on such substrates. In this study, we investigated the effect of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (micro)plastics on the growth, survival, and bioconversion of BSF larvae. On the other hand, the impact of the larvae on the polymer structure and degradation was also assessed. This was carried out by rearing BSF larvae on artificial food waste spiked with micro-, meso-, and macroplastics, while measuring larval growth, survival, and bioconversion parameters. The remaining plastics were collected and analysed upon changes and degradation of their polymer structure. Generally, BSF larvae were not affected in terms of growth performance (179.9–210.4 mg), survival (77.1–87.3%), and bioconversion (FCR: 4.65–5.53) by the presence of (micro)plastics in the substrates. Furthermore, the larvae were also unable to significantly alter the polymer structure of the used plastic.
