M. Faitsch in OpenAIRERecent I-mode investigations from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak are reported. It is shown that neutral-beam-injection heated I-modes can be stationary, which is important in terms of extrapolability towards future fusion devices. Furthermore, detailed studies on the weakly coherent mode are reported. In particular, experimental observations point towards its existence in L-mode, before I-mode starts. Moreover, its impact on density and temperature fluctuations is evaluated. Studies of stationary divertor heat fluxes show that in I-mode, the upstream power fall-off length is between those observed in L-mode and H-mode, and it is connected to the scrape-off layer temperature fall-off length. Moreover, analysis of transient divertor heat loads shows that intermittent turbulent events, observed in the confinement region and linked to the weakly coherent mode, are responsible for a significant part of divertor heat loads. Guimarais, L. in OpenAIREThe understanding of divertor physics and the evolution of divertor detachment is crucial for developing the capability to model power exhaust in current experiments and reliably predict it for future fusion devices. In simulations of ASDEX Upgrade, an experimentally observed region of high density in the high field side scrape-off layer has been recovered. Validated modeling with SOLPS5.0 shows that a detailed match of the high field side scrape-off layer plasma is not only important for local plasma parameters, but can lead to strong changes in global parameters. Drifts play a crucial role in lower-single null discharges with forward toroidal field (∇B→-drift pointing down). Their inclusion changes the spatial extent as well as the radial and poloidal gradients of the high field side high density. Adapted transport coefficients that take into account core fueling by plasma diffusion due to the presence of the high field side density and drift-driven radial fluxes now reconcile the modeled deuterium compression ratio, divertor neutral density, neutral radiation levels and deuterium fueling rates with experimental measurements. The onset of strong volume recombination in the simulations now allows to remove the previously necessary increase of perpendicular transport in the inner divertor from the simulations. Karhunen, Juuso in OpenAIREToroidal and poloidal flows of injected N+ ions were measured in the high-field side (HFS) scrape-off layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade by Doppler spectroscopy with different degrees of HFS divertor detachment. In high-recycling conditions, the results suggest reversed parallel N+ flow away from the inner divertor in the near SOL close to the separatrix, while the flow is towards the inner divertor throughout the SOL in detached conditions. The measured poloidal N+ flows were directed away from the HFS divertor in the near SOL for all density cases. Divertor plasma oscillations, characterized by momentary peaking of the HFS target ion flux and decrease of the HFS SOL density, were observed slightly before the roll-over of the ion saturation current to the HFS target and lead to an increase in the N+ flow towards the HFS divertor. SOLPS and ERO simulations of the experiment predict entrainment below 50% between the velocities of N+ and D+ ions, suggesting that N+ ions are quantitatively a limited proxy for measuring D+ flows. ERO simulations show significantly higher entrainment for higher ionization states, e.g., N2+ and N3+.

Karhunen, Juuso in OpenAIREToroidal and poloidal flows of injected N+ ions were measured in the high-field side (HFS) scrape-off layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade by Doppler spectroscopy with different degrees of HFS divertor detachment. In high-recycling conditions, the results suggest reversed parallel N+ flow away from the inner divertor in the near SOL close to the separatrix, while the flow is towards the inner divertor throughout the SOL in detached conditions. The measured poloidal N+ flows were directed away from the HFS divertor in the near SOL for all density cases. Divertor plasma oscillations, characterized by momentary peaking of the HFS target ion flux and decrease of the HFS SOL density, were observed slightly before the roll-over of the ion saturation current to the HFS target and lead to an increase in the N+ flow towards the HFS divertor. SOLPS and ERO simulations of the experiment predict entrainment below 50% between the velocities of N+ and D+ ions, suggesting that N+ ions are quantitatively a limited proxy for measuring D+ flows. ERO simulations show significantly higher entrainment for higher ionization states, e.g., N2+ and N3+.

Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98, y2) 0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes.

Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98, y2) 0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes.
