description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2024 DenmarkPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Zhixing Ji; Xing-Yuan Miao;A scheme of compact closed solid oxide fuel cell hybrid engines for ship power and propulsion on ships is proposed. A zero-emission closed engine at the effective equivalence ratio of 1 is achieved by recirculating water and fuelling by liquid hydrocarbon fuel and oxygen. The adiabatic pure oxygen reforming temperature of the reformer is higher than the specified anode inlet temperature. A turbine is placed in front of the solid oxide fuel cell anode. Detailed potential distributions are considered using a two-dimensional solid oxide fuel cell model, and thermodynamic models of the hybrid engine are built. The performance of the reformer is more sensitive to the oxygen-carbon ratio rather than the steam-carbon ratio, which leads to a huge change of the pressure ratio of the turbine. Therefore, the power ratios of turbines and SOFC are also affected by the oxygen and steam carbon ratio and excess oxygen coefficient. The optimized power ratio is 1.02–1.13, which results in a significant change in the efficiency of the engine. Under the specified operating conditions, the engine can achieve a high efficiency of 67 %. Under the off-design conditions, with the increase of the mass flow of fuel or the current density, the power of the engine can be changed from 20 % to 160 % of the designed power.

However, the limited range and long charging times of Li-ion batteries still hinder widespread adoption. This aspect is particularly true in the case of heavy freight and long-range transportation, where solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer an attractive alternative as they can provide high-efficiency and flexible fuel choices. However, the SOFC technology is mainly used for stationary applications owing to the high operating temperature, low volumetric power density and specific power, and poor robustness towards thermal cycling and mechanical vibrations of conventional ceramic-based cells. Here, we present a metal-based monolithic fuel cell design to overcome these issues. Cost-effective and scalable manufacturing processes are employed for fabrication, and only a single heat treatment is required, as opposed to multiple thermal treatments in conventional SOFC production. The design is optimised through three-dimensional multiphysics modelling, nanoparticle infiltration, and corrosion-mitigating treatments. The monolithic fuel cell stack shows a power density of 5.6 kW/L, thus, demonstrating the potential of SOFC technology for transport applications.

A central challenge of upscaling solid oxide cells is the probability of failure of the brittle ceramic components. The failures of the ceramic components may lead to significant degradation or eventual failure of a stack. To predict mechanical failures in a stack, a full stack model is needed, together with a local assessment of stresses at the vicinity of failing regions, e.g. the contact points between the cells and interconnects. A conventional three-dimensional model requires a very fine discretization of the mesh to capture stress intensities. Computational resources needed for such a model are therefore immense, and it is highly unlikely to compute at stack scale, as well describe the evolution over time. In this work, the homogenization modelling framework for solid oxide cell stacks is extended to identify local mechanical failures. Thus, the fracturing within a local failing point is examined by using a localization approach, where stresses in the stack model are linked to the local stresses and the energy release rate at the crack tip of the relevant interface. This is done in a general manner, such that the local stresses and the energy release rate can be evaluated at every point in the stack at every instant of time without loss of computational efficiency. A 100-cell stack can be modelled in three dimensions with all coupled multiphysics in steady state within 3 min on a current workstation computer.

Makhnenko; Olaf Kolditz; Olaf Kolditz; Thomas Nagel; Thomas Nagel; Francesco Parisio; Xing Yuan Miao; Xing Yuan Miao; Dmitri Naumov; Ali Tarokh;Abstract Failure in brittle rock happens because micro-cracks in the crystal structure coalesce and form a localized fracture. The propagation of the fracture is in turn strongly influenced by dissipation in the fracture process zone. The classical theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics falls short in describing failure when the dissipation in the fracture process zone is non-negligible; thus, a non-linear theory should be employed instead. Here we present a study in which we explore the characteristics of the fracture process zone in granite. We have combined fracture tests on Adelaide black granite with acoustic emission detection and finite element analyses by using a non-local integral plastic-damage constitutive theory. We have further employed the theory of configurational mechanics to support our interpretation of the evolution of the fracture process zone with strong energy-based arguments. We demonstrate that the size of the fracture process zone is non-negligible and dissipative phenomena related to micro-cracking play an important role. Our results indicate this role should be assessed case by case, especially in laboratory-sized analyses, which mostly deflect from theories of both size-independent plasticity and linear elastic fracture mechanics. When strong non-linearities occur, we show that fracture energy can be correctly computed with the help of configurational mechanics and that complex numerical simulation techniques can substantially facilitate the interpretation of experiments designed to highlight the dominant physical mechanisms driving fracture.

Thermal efficiency and long-term stability are of major concern both scientifically and industrially. There are many aspects that influence the thermal performance of a specific solid thermal energy storage (TES), such as the energy storage capacity of its storage material, the characteristics of its heat transfer fluid, and the mechanical integrity of the solid storage medium. In the present study, we develop a thermo-mechanical phase-field approach to fracture in order to examine the thermal performance degradation of the solid sensible heat storage (SHS) caused by potential thermally induced cracking of the heat storage medium around the embedded heat exchangers. Two representative solid SHS structures are examined: one applied in a low-temperature setting, the other used at high temperature levels. In both cases, fracturing caused by the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients of the storage medium and the heat exchanger occurs under certain conditions. The open fractures form a space that will be filled by a fluid whose nature is determined by the system concept and which may well have a low thermal conductivity. Hence, heat transfer can be disturbed in the damaged regions, causing high temperature anomalies, which further may lead to significant fluctuations/loss of heating power during the heating phase. In the two specific scenarios investigated here, the highest loss of heat flow was estimated to be 7.7% in the water-saturated low-temperature SHS and 20.5% in the high-temperature SHS.
