The automotive industry has been developed over the years to build lighter and more efficient vehicles; however, the manufacturing processes still have an important environmental impact starting from the acquisition of the raw material until the end of its useful life. In this sense, life cycle engineering contributes to solve the environmental issues produced by the traditional manufacturing industry by considering a process that evaluates the technical aspects of the product but also weights the importance of the environmental impact. However, since there are some alternatives that can be considered as suitable for their technical, environmental, or cost qualities, the multicriteria decision methods used as an engineering tool have been useful to balance all the needed criteria in order to make the best selection. In this sense, this research provided an analysis of five materials that could be used in a rack and pinion system and were submitted to a process of life cycle analysis to consider the environmental parameters as part of the criteria to be assessed by the multicriteria decision methods such as entropy, the Technique of Order Preference Similarity method, the complex proportional assessment method, and the multicriteria optimization and compromise solution, leading to the selection of the best material to be considered for a rack and pinion system. In this sense, the process allowed us to conclude that some materials that are useful can be evaluated by multicriteria decision methods regarding the life cycle analysis, contributing to the application of these methods to make a more environmentally responsible material selection for automotive parts. Furthermore, among all the materials, the best suited for the rack and pinion system was the AISI 4340, which was validated by finite elements simulation, showing that the selection was optimal with a maximum stress of 216.14 MPa, a maximum deformation of 0.0081 mm, and a minimum safety factor of 3.56. In this sense, the simulation validated the selection made before, guaranteeing that the methods used are feasible for automotive applications.

Several factors must be taken into account in order to achieve this goal. In this paper the migration from liquefied petroleum gas based cookers to electric induction cookers is analyzed, emphasizing on the selection of the best material to produce the cookware suitable for induction cookers in terms of energy saving and performance. To accomplish this study, several tests have been performed in three kind of pots made of different materials: stainless steel, cast iron and aluminium. These tests have allowed to evaluate some material properties as rust resistance, structural stability of pot bottom under thermal impact conditions, energy efficiency measurements in different body cookware materials, energy efficiency with different distances between induction zone and pot bottom, relation between energy efficiency and initial measurements of concavity/convexity and energy efficiency before and after thermal impact conditions. After completing this research, it has been found that the enameled cast iron and the stainless steel present higher efficiency in the same stove.

The use of vehicles is a daily matter worldwide, however, they remain parked most of the time and commonly under the heating sun, leading to a rise in the internal temperature that provokes heating discomfort, and when the temperature drops this discomfort to the user is felt as cold. In this way, to reduce the distress drivers use air-conditioners in the first case and heaters in the second event as needed, making the consumption of energy a common activity. This research method takes a list of phase change materials used in some applications and makes a novel selection of the best material to be implemented on a vehicle's rooftop, which is done by Multicriteria Decision Methods means. The weighting is done by the Entropy weighting method compared with the new method based on the removal effect of criteria (MEREC), the decision-making methods VIKOR, COPRAS and TOPSIS choose the best material and the Spearman's correlation verify its agreement. The best material selected unanimously is the savENRG PCM-HS22P, which latter was simulated by finite elements methods, resulting in the reduction of 9 °C in the internal air when heating and conservation of 4 °C in the cooling with an increasing Phase Change Material layer. During tests, it has been monitored the temperature, time, electrical grid parameters, concentrations of CO and CO2. In addition it has been studied the microbiological and physiochemical changes produced by the thermal treatment in food and a discriminative triangular test for determining the differences in the consumers perception between samples made with induction and LPG based stoves. The results showed which even with an exhaust hood working, there was still a significant value of concentration of CO and CO2 during cooking with a LPG stoves. As a result of these analyses the induction stove shows a better response during the heating process and energy efficiency which have influence in temperatures, taste, vitamin preservation, cooking times, energy consumption and cost to the user.

Unfortunately, however, this is occurring just as the climate agenda has come to dominate much of the discourse and action on international sustainable development. Thus, instead of optimizing approaches that centrally focus on the large health impact, the household energy agenda has been hampered by the constraints imposed by a narrow definition of sustainability—one primarily driven by the desire to mitigate greenhouse emissions by relying on renewable biomass fueling so-called improved cookstoves. In reality, however, solid biomass is extremely difficult to burn sufficiently cleanly in household stoves to reach health goals. In comparison to the international development community, however, some large countries, notably Brazil historically and more recently, India have substantially expanded the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in their household energy mix, using their own resources, having a major impact on their national energy picture. The net climate impact of such approaches compared to current biomass stoves is minimal or non-existent, and the social and health benefits are, in contrast, potentially great. LPG can be seen as a transition fuel for clean household energy, with induction stoves powered by renewables as the holy grail (an approach already being adopted by Ecuador as also discussed here). The enormous human and social benefits of clean energy, rather than climate concerns, should dominate the household energy access agenda today.

This research addresses the challenges and opportunities for electric vehicle charging stations in Latin America. The transition to electric mobility is crucial to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, modernize the quality of life in urban areas, update public policies related to transportation, and promote economic development. However, this is not an easy task in this region; it faces several obstacles, such as a lack of liquidity in governments, a lack of adequate infrastructure, high implementation costs, the need for clear regulatory frameworks, and limited public awareness of the benefits of electric mobility. To this end, the current panorama of electric mobility in the region is analyzed, including current policies, the state of the charging infrastructure, and the prospects for growth regarding electric vehicles in Latin America. Factors that could lead to their successful implementation are promoted, highlighting the importance of public policies adapted to Latin American countries, collaboration between the public–private industry, the industry’s adoption of new technologies in this region, and the education of the population, and the benefits of these policies are considered. Successful case studies from the region are presented to provide us with an idea of practices that can be carried out in other countries. The implementation of a charging system in Latin America is also studied; the successful implementation of charging systems is found to depend largely on the existence of integrated public policies that address aspects other than the charging infrastructure. Finally, the value of the work and the research findings are presented to indicate what this study can help with. These strategies are key to overcoming the challenges and maximizing the benefits of electric mobility in Latin America.

In addition, a standardization process was performed, which consists of establishing an overall performance index to evaluate the results. Finally, the Pearson correlation coefficient is used to analyze mutual correspondence between multi-criteria decision making methods. In this research, different selection criteria which include meteorological parameters (wind speed, air density), relief (slope), location (distances to substations, road network, urban areas, transmission lines, charging ports) and environmental parameters (vegetation coverage), have been considered. The results of this research revealed that the site with the highest overall performance index is the Andean region of Ecuador, with an area of more than 617.5 km 2 . The outcome of the overall performance index indicates that the four selected multi-criteria decision making methods provided similar results, where the value was equal to or greater than 75% of the maximum punctuation of an ideal location. In this context, the methods analyzed converge to similar solutions and indicate that the multi-criteria decision making method is a powerful tool for selecting ideal locations for wind farms.

The Galapagos Islands have been declared a World Heritage site due to their unique biodiversity, which makes them a living museum and a natural laboratory for humankind. However, to fulfill the energy needs of its habitants and foreign visitors, the islands have depended on fossil fuel energies that have produced levels of lead and chemical agents that are affecting the islands’ air quality, flora, and fauna. Therefore, zero-carbon initiatives have been created to protect the islands, wherein solar and wind power plants have been studied as reliable alternatives. In this way, Geographical Information Systems based on Multicriteria Decision Methods constitute a methodology that minimizes the destruction and disturbance of nature in order to assess the best location for the implementation of these alternative energy sources. Therefore, by exploring the geographical information along with the Analytical Hierarchical Processes and the Ordered Weighted Average methods, it was possible to identify the potential for solar power plants of 10 MW on each island; likewise, for wind power plants, it was found that the islands possess implementation potential that has been analyzed in the field, showing that the best location is on Baltra Island, but is not limited to it.

This study demonstrates the viability of migration from imported fossil fuels to locally-produced renewable energy as the basis for an efficient cooking facility. This work aims to estimate the expected hours of Predicted Medium Vote (PMV) thermal comfort in Ecuadorian social housing houses applying energy simulations with Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for very hot-humid climates. First, a novel methodology for characterizing three different types of social housing is presented based on a space-time analysis of the electricity consumption in a residential complex. Next, the increase in energy demand under climate influences is analyzed. Moreover, with the goal of enlarging the time of thermal comfort inside the houses, the most suitable PCM for them is determined. This paper includes both simulations and comparisons of thermal behavior by means of the PMV methodology of four types of PCMs selected. From the performed energy simulations, the results show that changing the deck and using RT25-RT30 in walls, it is possible to increase the duration of thermal comfort in at least one of the three analyzed houses. The applied PCM showed 46% of comfortable hours and a reduction of 937 h in which the thermal sensation varies from “very hot” to “hot”. Additionally, the usage time of air conditioning decreases, assuring the thermal comfort for the inhabitants during a higher number of hours per day.

The automotive industry has been developed over the years to build lighter and more efficient vehicles; however, the manufacturing processes still have an important environmental impact starting from the acquisition of the raw material until the end of its useful life. In this sense, life cycle engineering contributes to solve the environmental issues produced by the traditional manufacturing industry by considering a process that evaluates the technical aspects of the product but also weights the importance of the environmental impact. However, since there are some alternatives that can be considered as suitable for their technical, environmental, or cost qualities, the multicriteria decision methods used as an engineering tool have been useful to balance all the needed criteria in order to make the best selection. In this sense, this research provided an analysis of five materials that could be used in a rack and pinion system and were submitted to a process of life cycle analysis to consider the environmental parameters as part of the criteria to be assessed by the multicriteria decision methods such as entropy, the Technique of Order Preference Similarity method, the complex proportional assessment method, and the multicriteria optimization and compromise solution, leading to the selection of the best material to be considered for a rack and pinion system. In this sense, the process allowed us to conclude that some materials that are useful can be evaluated by multicriteria decision methods regarding the life cycle analysis, contributing to the application of these methods to make a more environmentally responsible material selection for automotive parts. Furthermore, among all the materials, the best suited for the rack and pinion system was the AISI 4340, which was validated by finite elements simulation, showing that the selection was optimal with a maximum stress of 216.14 MPa, a maximum deformation of 0.0081 mm, and a minimum safety factor of 3.56. In this sense, the simulation validated the selection made before, guaranteeing that the methods used are feasible for automotive applications.

Several factors must be taken into account in order to achieve this goal. In this paper the migration from liquefied petroleum gas based cookers to electric induction cookers is analyzed, emphasizing on the selection of the best material to produce the cookware suitable for induction cookers in terms of energy saving and performance. To accomplish this study, several tests have been performed in three kind of pots made of different materials: stainless steel, cast iron and aluminium. These tests have allowed to evaluate some material properties as rust resistance, structural stability of pot bottom under thermal impact conditions, energy efficiency measurements in different body cookware materials, energy efficiency with different distances between induction zone and pot bottom, relation between energy efficiency and initial measurements of concavity/convexity and energy efficiency before and after thermal impact conditions. After completing this research, it has been found that the enameled cast iron and the stainless steel present higher efficiency in the same stove.

In this paper the migration from liquefied petroleum gas based cookers to electric induction cookers is analyzed, emphasizing on the selection of the best material to produce the cookware suitable for induction cookers in terms of energy saving and performance. To accomplish this study, several tests have been performed in three kind of pots made of different materials: stainless steel, cast iron and aluminium. These tests have allowed to evaluate some material properties as rust resistance, structural stability of pot bottom under thermal impact conditions, energy efficiency measurements in different body cookware materials, energy efficiency with different distances between induction zone and pot bottom, relation between energy efficiency and initial measurements of concavity/convexity and energy efficiency before and after thermal impact conditions. After completing this research, it has been found that the enameled cast iron and the stainless steel present higher efficiency in the same stove.

The use of vehicles is a daily matter worldwide, however, they remain parked most of the time and commonly under the heating sun, leading to a rise in the internal temperature that provokes heating discomfort, and when the temperature drops this discomfort to the user is felt as cold. In this way, to reduce the distress drivers use air-conditioners in the first case and heaters in the second event as needed, making the consumption of energy a common activity. This research method takes a list of phase change materials used in some applications and makes a novel selection of the best material to be implemented on a vehicle's rooftop, which is done by Multicriteria Decision Methods means. The weighting is done by the Entropy weighting method compared with the new method based on the removal effect of criteria (MEREC), the decision-making methods VIKOR, COPRAS and TOPSIS choose the best material and the Spearman's correlation verify its agreement. The best material selected unanimously is the savENRG PCM-HS22P, which latter was simulated by finite elements methods, resulting in the reduction of 9 °C in the internal air when heating and conservation of 4 °C in the cooling with an increasing Phase Change Material layer. During tests, it has been monitored the temperature, time, electrical grid parameters, concentrations of CO and CO2. In addition it has been studied the microbiological and physiochemical changes produced by the thermal treatment in food and a discriminative triangular test for determining the differences in the consumers perception between samples made with induction and LPG based stoves. The results showed which even with an exhaust hood working, there was still a significant value of concentration of CO and CO2 during cooking with a LPG stoves. As a result of these analyses the induction stove shows a better response during the heating process and energy efficiency which have influence in temperatures, taste, vitamin preservation, cooking times, energy consumption and cost to the user.

Accordingly, there has been some shift in development thinking and investment from previous efforts, which has focused only on improving the efficiency of household fuel use, to those that focus on reducing exposure to the air pollution that leads to health impact. Unfortunately, however, this is occurring just as the climate agenda has come to dominate much of the discourse and action on international sustainable development. Thus, instead of optimizing approaches that centrally focus on the large health impact, the household energy agenda has been hampered by the constraints imposed by a narrow definition of sustainability—one primarily driven by the desire to mitigate greenhouse emissions by relying on renewable biomass fueling so-called improved cookstoves. In reality, however, solid biomass is extremely difficult to burn sufficiently cleanly in household stoves to reach health goals. In comparison to the international development community, however, some large countries, notably Brazil historically and more recently, India have substantially expanded the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in their household energy mix, using their own resources, having a major impact on their national energy picture. The net climate impact of such approaches compared to current biomass stoves is minimal or non-existent, and the social and health benefits are, in contrast, potentially great. LPG can be seen as a transition fuel for clean household energy, with induction stoves powered by renewables as the holy grail (an approach already being adopted by Ecuador as also discussed here). The enormous human and social benefits of clean energy, rather than climate concerns, should dominate the household energy access agenda today.

This research addresses the challenges and opportunities for electric vehicle charging stations in Latin America. The transition to electric mobility is crucial to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, modernize the quality of life in urban areas, update public policies related to transportation, and promote economic development. However, this is not an easy task in this region; it faces several obstacles, such as a lack of liquidity in governments, a lack of adequate infrastructure, high implementation costs, the need for clear regulatory frameworks, and limited public awareness of the benefits of electric mobility. To this end, the current panorama of electric mobility in the region is analyzed, including current policies, the state of the charging infrastructure, and the prospects for growth regarding electric vehicles in Latin America. Factors that could lead to their successful implementation are promoted, highlighting the importance of public policies adapted to Latin American countries, collaboration between the public–private industry, the industry’s adoption of new technologies in this region, and the education of the population, and the benefits of these policies are considered. Successful case studies from the region are presented to provide us with an idea of practices that can be carried out in other countries. The implementation of a charging system in Latin America is also studied; the successful implementation of charging systems is found to depend largely on the existence of integrated public policies that address aspects other than the charging infrastructure. Finally, the value of the work and the research findings are presented to indicate what this study can help with. These strategies are key to overcoming the challenges and maximizing the benefits of electric mobility in Latin America.

In addition, a standardization process was performed, which consists of establishing an overall performance index to evaluate the results. Finally, the Pearson correlation coefficient is used to analyze mutual correspondence between multi-criteria decision making methods. In this research, different selection criteria which include meteorological parameters (wind speed, air density), relief (slope), location (distances to substations, road network, urban areas, transmission lines, charging ports) and environmental parameters (vegetation coverage), have been considered. The results of this research revealed that the site with the highest overall performance index is the Andean region of Ecuador, with an area of more than 617.5 km 2 . The outcome of the overall performance index indicates that the four selected multi-criteria decision making methods provided similar results, where the value was equal to or greater than 75% of the maximum punctuation of an ideal location. In this context, the methods analyzed converge to similar solutions and indicate that the multi-criteria decision making method is a powerful tool for selecting ideal locations for wind farms.

The Galapagos Islands have been declared a World Heritage site due to their unique biodiversity, which makes them a living museum and a natural laboratory for humankind. However, to fulfill the energy needs of its habitants and foreign visitors, the islands have depended on fossil fuel energies that have produced levels of lead and chemical agents that are affecting the islands’ air quality, flora, and fauna. Therefore, zero-carbon initiatives have been created to protect the islands, wherein solar and wind power plants have been studied as reliable alternatives. In this way, Geographical Information Systems based on Multicriteria Decision Methods constitute a methodology that minimizes the destruction and disturbance of nature in order to assess the best location for the implementation of these alternative energy sources. Therefore, by exploring the geographical information along with the Analytical Hierarchical Processes and the Ordered Weighted Average methods, it was possible to identify the potential for solar power plants of 10 MW on each island; likewise, for wind power plants, it was found that the islands possess implementation potential that has been analyzed in the field, showing that the best location is on Baltra Island, but is not limited to it.

This program is rooted in the current effort to change Ecuador's energy balance, with hydroelectric power expected to generate 83.61% of national electricity by 2022, ending the need for subsidized LPG. For this analysis, the 2014 baseline situation has been compared with two future scenarios for 2022: a business-as-usual scenario and an NECP-success scenario. This study demonstrates the viability of migration from imported fossil fuels to locally-produced renewable energy as the basis for an efficient cooking facility. The new policies scenario would save US$ 1.162 billion in annual government expenditure on cooking subsidies, and reducing CO2 emissions associated to energy for cooking in 1.8 tCO2/y. 6 pages, 1 figure, 4 table, research article

This work aims to estimate the expected hours of Predicted Medium Vote (PMV) thermal comfort in Ecuadorian social housing houses applying energy simulations with Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for very hot-humid climates. First, a novel methodology for characterizing three different types of social housing is presented based on a space-time analysis of the electricity consumption in a residential complex. Next, the increase in energy demand under climate influences is analyzed. Moreover, with the goal of enlarging the time of thermal comfort inside the houses, the most suitable PCM for them is determined. This paper includes both simulations and comparisons of thermal behavior by means of the PMV methodology of four types of PCMs selected. From the performed energy simulations, the results show that changing the deck and using RT25-RT30 in walls, it is possible to increase the duration of thermal comfort in at least one of the three analyzed houses. The applied PCM showed 46% of comfortable hours and a reduction of 937 h in which the thermal sensation varies from “very hot” to “hot”. Additionally, the usage time of air conditioning decreases, assuring the thermal comfort for the inhabitants during a higher number of hours per day.
