description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 FrancePublisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Chaopeng Guo; Jean-Marc Pierson; Hui Liu; Jie Song;A lot of cloud systems are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the data volume and the arrival of the big data era. Meanwhile, energy efficiency and energy saving become major concerns for data centers where massive cloud systems are deployed. However, energy waste is quite common due to resource provisioning. In this paper, using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), a frequency selection approach is introduced to improve the energy efficiency of the cloud systems in terms of resource provisioning. In the approach, two algorithms, genetic algorithm (GA) and Monte Carlo tree search algorithm (MCTS), are proposed. A cloud database system is taken as an example to evaluate the approach. The results of the experiments show that both algorithms have its advantages. The algorithms have great scalability, in which the GA can be applied to thousands of nodes and the MCTS can be applied to hundreds of nodes. Both algorithms have high accuracy compared with optimal solutions (up to 99.9% and 99.6% for GA and MCTS, respectively). According to an optimality bound analysis, 26% of energy can be saved at most using our frequency selection approach.

Meanwhile, more and more energy is consumed by the IT infrastructure especially the larger scale distributed systems. In this paper, a novel idea for optimizing the Energy Consumption (EC for short) of MapReduce system is proposed. We argue that a fair data placement is helpful to save energy, and then we propose three goals of data placement, and a modulo based Data Placement Algorithm (DPA for short) which achieves these goals. Afterwards, the correctness of the proposed DPA is proved from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Three different systems which implement MapReduce model with different DPAs are compared in our experiments. Our algorithm is proved to optimize EC effectively, without introducing the additional costs and delaying data loading. With the help of our DPA, the EC for the WordCount , Sort and MRBench can be reduced by 10.9 %, 8.3 % and 17 % respectively, and time consumption is reduced by 7 %, 6.3 % and 7 % respectively.

The first step consists in determining the necessary IT equipment for processing a given IT workload composed of batch and service tasks. We propose an adapted binary search algorithm and prove its optimality to find the minimum number of servers to handle the IT workload. When the IT sizing is computed, the second step consists in defining the supplying electrical infrastructure using wind turbines and photovoltaic panels as primary sources. Batteries and a hydrogen system are added as secondary sources for short- and long-term energy storage, respectively. In this electrical sizing step, first a set of primary source configurations is determined using a binary search algorithm, then the secondary sources are calibrated so that levels of charge are constant during one day and one year, respectively. Experiments using real IT workload traces and actual meteorological data are conducted to illustrate the provided methodology to decision makers for choosing the best configuration for their data center.

Cloud computing is today’s most emphasized Information and Communications Technology (ICT) paradigm that is directly or indirectly used by almost every online user. However, such great significance comes with the support of a great infrastructure that includes large data centers comprising thousands of server units and other supporting equipment. Their share in power consumption generates between 1.1% and 1.5% of the total electricity use worldwide and is projected to rise even more. Such alarming numbers demand rethinking the energy efficiency of such infrastructures. However, before making any changes to infrastructure, an analysis of the current status is required. In this article, we perform a comprehensive analysis of an infrastructure supporting the cloud computing paradigm with regards to energy efficiency. First, we define a systematic approach for analyzing the energy efficiency of most important data center domains, including server and network equipment, as well as cloud management systems and appliances consisting of a software utilized by end users. Second, we utilize this approach for analyzing available scientific and industrial literature on state-of-the-art practices in data centers and their equipment. Finally, we extract existing challenges and highlight future research directions.

However, for large-scale non-mobile distributed systems, which nowadays reach impressive sizes, the energy dimension (electrical consumption) just starts to be taken into account. In this paper, we present the GREEN-NET1 framework which is based on 3 main components: an ON/OFF model based on an Energy Aware Resource Infrastructure (EARI), an adapted Resource Management System (OAR) for energy efficiency and a trust delegation component to assume network presence of sleeping nodes.

This article investigates the Green IT area and its opportunities for innovation. This chapter analyses the main motivations for Green IT, and proposes a definition of Green IT including social, environmental and economic concerns. Beyond simply listing areas of possible innovation, this paper studies the virtuous circle that appears in Green IT: while Green IT has its own motivations, the resulting research feeds into other research fields. Innovation in this particular sector paves the way for further innovation by means of original research not foreseen initially.

However, one of the main challenges when operating such green datacenters is to conciliate the intermittent power supply and the power demand. To deal with this problem, we view the green datacenter as two sub-systems, namely, Information Technology (IT) sub-system which consumes energy, and electrical sub-system which supplies energy. The objective is to find an efficient trade-off between the power demand and power supply, respecting the operational requirements of both sub-systems (i.e., the requirements on utility, or monetary gain, which includes monetary revenue and monetary cost). First, we analyze the problem by a black-box approach. In this approach, the models of the two sub-systems are unknown to each other, and the two sub-systems negotiate by exchanging their power preferences. However, we found that the black-box approach cannot guarantee stable solutions in term of execution time and generational distance (which is the distance between a solution and the Pareto front). Then we introduce a semi black-box approach, in which the two sub-systems are modeled as the buyer and the supplier in a buyer–supplier negotiation game. We propose an algorithm that allows the buyer and supplier to negotiate, seeking for an efficient trade-off between the power demand and power supply. The analytical results show that the semi black-box algorithm converges to equilibrium, and these results are then confirmed by experimental results. We conduct the experiments by implementing a middleware of a datacenter powered by renewable energies. The experimental results show that the semi black-box algorithm improves significantly the stability, quality of service (QoS) and utility of the datacenter, compared to other algorithms. In term of stability, compared to the black-box algorithm, the semi black-box algorithm reduces the standard deviation of execution time and generational distance by 23 and 27 times, respectively. In term of QoS and utility, the semi black-box algorithm outperforms the algorithms that do not consider joint IT-energy management, as well as the algorithms that do not utilize a semi black-box design.

Content distribution networks (CDNs) are one of the popular large-scale distributed systems managing around 40% of internet traffic. In order to reduce services cost and to minimise internet contribution in we footprint, it is very important to manage resources efficiently and to control energy consumption in CDNs. Although different studies propose solutions to reduce energy consumption, there is less concentration on analysing energy consumption and resource utilisation. In this paper, we have evaluated resource utilisation and ultimately energy consumption under different scenarios. We have proposed utilisation-aware energy consumption model. We have considered one of the most popular request redirection policy, that is, load balance. Quality of experience (QoE) metrics such as overall delay in client requests completion and dropped requests are also evaluated. Extensive simulation is performed by varying CDN infrastructure size, client requests traffic volume and intensity of end-user requests.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Guo, Chaopeng; Pierson, Jean-Marc; Song, Jie; Herzog, Christina;A lot of cloud computing and cloud database techniques are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the arrival of the big data era. Meanwhile, energy efficiency and energy saving become a major concern in data centers, which are in charge of large distributed systems and cloud databases. However, the phenomenon of energy wasting is related to resource provisioning. Hot-N-Cold model is introduced in this paper, which uses workload predictions and DVFS(Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) to cope with the resource provisioning problem within energy aware cloud database systems. In this model, the resource provisioning problem is considered as two bounded problems. A nonlinear programming algorithm and a multi-phase algorithm are proposed to solve them. The experimental results show that one of the proposed algorithms has great scalability which can be applied to a cloud database system deployed on 70 nodes. Using Hot-N-Cold model can save up to 21.5% of the energy of the running time.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 FrancePublisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Chaopeng Guo; Jean-Marc Pierson; Hui Liu; Jie Song;A lot of cloud systems are adopted in industry and academia to face the explosion of the data volume and the arrival of the big data era.
