Candida utilis (C. utilis) growing on sugar cane bagasse complemented with a mineral salt solution was studied for gaseous ethanol removal in a biofilter. Ethanol loads from 93.7 to 511.9 g/h m(3) were used, by varying both inlet ethanol concentration (9.72 to 52.4 g/m(3)) and air flow rate (1.59 x 10(-3) to 2.86 x 10(-3) m(3)/h). At a loading rate of 93.7 g/h m(3), a steady-state was maintained for 300 h. Ethanol removal was complete, and 76.3% of the carbon consumed was found in carbon dioxide. At an higher aeration rate (ethanol load=153.8 g/h m(3)), the biofilter displayed an average removal efficiency (RE) of 70%, and an elimination capacity (EC) of 107.7 g/h m(3). Only 64.4% of the carbon consumed was used for CO(2) production. Acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate in the outlet gas attained 7.86 and 20.4% in terms of carbon balance, respectively. In both cases, the transient phase was less than one day. At a high inlet ethanol concentration (52.4 g/m(3)), no steady-state was observed and the process stopped during the third day. In the three cases, final biomass was poor, ranging from 10.5 to 14.8 mg/g dm. Final pH 4.0-4.6, indicated that acidifying non-volatile metabolites, such as acetate, accumulated in the reactor.

The operation and performance of a biotrickling filter for methanol (MeOH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal at acid pH was studied. Excess biomass in the filter bed, causing performance loss and high pressure drop, was controlled by intermittent addition, of ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The results showed that after adaptation to acid pH, the maximum elimination capacity (EC) reached for MeOH was 565 g m-3 h -1 (97 % RE). High MeOH loads resulted in increased biomass concentration within the support, triggering reductions in the removal efficiency (RE) for both compounds close to 50 %, and high pressure drop. At this stage, an inlet load of 150.2 ± 16.7 g m-3 h-1 of O3 was fed by 38 days favoring biomass detachment, and EC recovery and lower pressure dropped with a maximum elimination capacity of 587 g m-3 h-1 (81 % RE) and 15.8 g m-3 h-1 (97 % RE) for MeOH and H2S, respectively. After O3 addition, a rapid increase in biomass content and higher fluctuations in pressure drop were observed reducing the system performance. A second treatment with oxidants was implemented feeding a O3 load of 4.8 ± 0.1 g m-3 h-1 for 7 days, followed by H2O2 addition for 23 days, registering 607.5 gbiomass L-1packing before and 367.5 gbiomass L-1packing after the oxidant addition. PCR-DGGE analysis of different operating stages showed a clear change in the bacterial populations when O3 was present while the fungal population was less affected.

The ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to produce hydrogen sulfide and the high affinity of sulfide to react with divalent metallic cations represent an excellent option to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Different parameters have been proposed to control the hydrogen sulfide production by anaerobic bacteria, such as the organic and sulfate loading rates and the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio. This work relates the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio with the hydrogen sulfide production and dissolved lead precipitation, using ethanol as carbon and energy source in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. A maximum dissolved sulfide concentration of 470+/-7 mg S/L was obtained at a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 2.5, with sulfate and ethanol conversions of approximately 94 and 87%, respectively. The lowest dissolved sulfide concentration (145+/-10 mg S/L) was observed with a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 0.67. Substantial amounts of acetate (510-1730 mg/L) were produced and accumulated in the bioreactor from ethanol oxidation. Although only incomplete oxidation of ethanol to acetate was observed, the consortium was able to remove 99% of the dissolved lead (200 mg/L) with a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 1.5. It was found that the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio could be an adequate parameter to control the hydrogen sulfide production and the consequent precipitation of dissolved lead.

AbstractThe performance of biofilters inoculated with the fungus Scedosporium apiospermum was evaluated. This fungus was isolated from a biofilter which operated with toluene for more than 6 months. The experiments were performed in a 2.9 L reactor packed with vermiculite or with vermiculite‐granular activated carbon as packing material. The initial moisture content of the support and the inlet concentration of toluene were 70% and 6 g/m3, respectively. As the pressure drop increased from 5–40 mm H2O a strong initial growth was observed. Stable operation was maintained for 20 days with a moisture content of 55% and a biomass of 33 mg biomass/g dry support. These conditions were achieved with intermittent addition of culture medium, which permitted a stable elimination capacity (EC) of 100 g/m3reactorh without clogging. Pressure drop across the bed and CO2 production were related to toluene elimination. Measurement of toluene, at different levels of the biofilter, showed that the system attained higher local EC (200 g/m3rh) at the reactor outlet. These conditions were related to local humidity conditions. When the mineral medium was added periodically before the EC decreases, EC of approximately 258 g/m3rh were maintained with removal efficiencies of 98%. Under these conditions the average moisture content was 60% and 41 mg biomass/g dry support was produced. No sporulation was observed. The stimulation of the microbial population by a more bioavailable supplementary carbon source and by a surfactant pretreatment was studied in petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soils bioremediation. Two types of soils were used, Soil A which had been recently polluted and the aged Soil B. They contained 52.4 and 50.4 g of total petroleum hydrocarbons per kg of dry soil, respectively. The effect of passing a continuous small stream of air containing a low concentration of gaseous toluene through packed 0.5 l (Ø=5.5 cm) columns was studied. For Soil A, after 62 days the THPs degradation was 28% higher in the toluene treated columns than in controls. In aged Soil B the effect of toluene was not significant, probably due to bioavailability limitations. With Soil B, the combined effect of toluene as cosubstrate and a surfactant pretreatment was studied and the hydrocarbons degradation was 29% higher in the toluene-amended columns than in the controls. Toluene removal was higher than 99% in all cases. Surfactant addition increased hydrocarbon degradation when toluene was also added suggesting that the biological reaction was the limiting process. The study shows the possibilities of using gaseous substrates, such as toluene, for the in situ or ex situ treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soil in processes limited by the biological reaction. The main advantage of the treatment is that the compound can be easily and directly delivered to the polluted soil through the venting system.

The effect of biomass accumulation in a biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with polyurethane foam (PUF) was assessed in terms of hydrodynamics and void space availability in a system treating dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) vapors with an alkaliphilic consortium. A sample of colonized support from a BTF having been operating for over a year was analyzed, and it was found that the BTF void bed fraction was reduced to almost half of that calculated initially without biomass. Liquid flow through the examined BTF yielded dispersion coefficient values of 0.30 and 0.72 m(2) h(-1), for clean or colonized PUF, respectively. 3D images of attached biomass obtained with magnetic resonance imaging allowed to calculate the superficial area and the biofilm volume percentage and depth as 650 m(2) m(-3), 35%, and 0.6 mm respectively. A simplified geometric approximation of the complex PUF structure was proposed using an orthogonal 3D mesh that predicted 600 m(2) m(-3) for the same biomass content. With this simplified model, it is suggested that the optimum biomass content would be around 20% of bed volume. The activity of the microorganisms was evaluated by respirometry and the kinetics represented with a Haldane equation type. Experimentally determined parameters were used in a mathematical model to simulate the DMDS elimination capacity (EC), and better description was found when the removal experimental data were matched with a model including liquid axial dispersion in contrast to an ideal plug flow model.

This paper evaluates the effect of the irradiance, pH and temperature on the photosynthetic activity (PA) of Scenedesmus obtusiusculus under N-replete and N-deplete conditions through oxygen measurements. The highest PA values were 160 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 620 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 35 °C and pH of 8 under N-replete conditions and 3.3 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 100 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 28.5 °C and pH of 5.5 for N-deplete conditions. Those operation conditions were tested in a flat-panel photobioreactor. The biomass productivity was 0.97 gb L(-1) d(-1) under N-replete conditions with a photosynthetic efficiency (PE) of 4.4% yielding 0.85 gb mol photon(-1). Similar biomass productivity was obtained under N-deplete condition; and the lipid productivity was 0.34 gL L(-1) d(-1) with a PE of 7.8% yielding 0.39 gL mol photon(-1). The apparent activation and deactivation energies were 16.1 and 30 kcal mol(-1), and 11.9 and 15.3 kcal mol(-1), for N-replete and N-deplete conditions, respectively.

This paper evaluates the effect of the irradiance, pH and temperature on the photosynthetic activity (PA) of Scenedesmus obtusiusculus under N-replete and N-deplete conditions through oxygen measurements. The highest PA values were 160 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 620 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 35 °C and pH of 8 under N-replete conditions and 3.3 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 100 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 28.5 °C and pH of 5.5 for N-deplete conditions. Those operation conditions were tested in a flat-panel photobioreactor. The biomass productivity was 0.97 gb L(-1) d(-1) under N-replete conditions with a photosynthetic efficiency (PE) of 4.4% yielding 0.85 gb mol photon(-1). Similar biomass productivity was obtained under N-deplete condition; and the lipid productivity was 0.34 gL L(-1) d(-1) with a PE of 7.8% yielding 0.39 gL mol photon(-1). The apparent activation and deactivation energies were 16.1 and 30 kcal mol(-1), and 11.9 and 15.3 kcal mol(-1), for N-replete and N-deplete conditions, respectively.

Bacterial biofilters usually exhibit a high microbial diversity and robustness, while fungal biofilters have been claimed to better withstand low moisture contents and pH values, and to be more efficient coping with hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, there are only few systematic evaluations of both biofiltration technologies. The present study compared fungal and bacterial biofiltration for the treatment of a VOC mixture (propanal, methyl isobutyl ketone-MIBK, toluene and hexanol) under the same operating conditions. Overall, fungal biofiltration supported lower elimination capacities than its bacterial counterpart (27.7 ± 8.9 vs 40.2 ± 5.4 gCm(-3) reactor h(-1)), which exhibited a final pressure drop 60% higher than that of the bacterial biofilter due to mycelial growth. The VOC mineralization ratio was also higher in the bacterial bed (≈ 63% vs ≈ 43%). However, the substrate biodegradation preference order was similar for both biofilters (propanal>hexanol>MIBK>toluene) with propanal partially inhibiting the consumption of the rest of the VOCs. Both systems supported an excellent robustness versus 24h VOC starvation episodes. The implementation of a fungal/bacterial coupled system did not significantly improve the VOC removal performance compared to the individual biofilter performances.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous contaminants that can be found both in outdoor and indoor air, posing risks to human health and the ecosystems. The treatment of air contaminated with VOCs in low concentrations can be effectively performed using biofiltration, especially when VOCs are hydrophilic. However, the performance of biofilters inoculated with bacteria has been found to be low with sparsely water soluble molecules when compared to biofilters where fungi develop. Using conceptual and mathematical models, this review presents an overview of the physical, chemical and biological mechanisms that explain the differences in the performance of fungal and bacterial biofilters. Moreover, future research needs are proposed, with an emphasis on integrated models describing the biological and chemical reactions with the mass transfer using high-resolution descriptions of the packing material.

Candida utilis (C. utilis) growing on sugar cane bagasse complemented with a mineral salt solution was studied for gaseous ethanol removal in a biofilter. Ethanol loads from 93.7 to 511.9 g/h m(3) were used, by varying both inlet ethanol concentration (9.72 to 52.4 g/m(3)) and air flow rate (1.59 x 10(-3) to 2.86 x 10(-3) m(3)/h). At a loading rate of 93.7 g/h m(3), a steady-state was maintained for 300 h. Ethanol removal was complete, and 76.3% of the carbon consumed was found in carbon dioxide. At an higher aeration rate (ethanol load=153.8 g/h m(3)), the biofilter displayed an average removal efficiency (RE) of 70%, and an elimination capacity (EC) of 107.7 g/h m(3). Only 64.4% of the carbon consumed was used for CO(2) production. Acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate in the outlet gas attained 7.86 and 20.4% in terms of carbon balance, respectively. In both cases, the transient phase was less than one day. At a high inlet ethanol concentration (52.4 g/m(3)), no steady-state was observed and the process stopped during the third day. In the three cases, final biomass was poor, ranging from 10.5 to 14.8 mg/g dm. Final pH 4.0-4.6, indicated that acidifying non-volatile metabolites, such as acetate, accumulated in the reactor.

The operation and performance of a biotrickling filter for methanol (MeOH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal at acid pH was studied. Excess biomass in the filter bed, causing performance loss and high pressure drop, was controlled by intermittent addition, of ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The results showed that after adaptation to acid pH, the maximum elimination capacity (EC) reached for MeOH was 565 g m-3 h -1 (97 % RE). High MeOH loads resulted in increased biomass concentration within the support, triggering reductions in the removal efficiency (RE) for both compounds close to 50 %, and high pressure drop. At this stage, an inlet load of 150.2 ± 16.7 g m-3 h-1 of O3 was fed by 38 days favoring biomass detachment, and EC recovery and lower pressure dropped with a maximum elimination capacity of 587 g m-3 h-1 (81 % RE) and 15.8 g m-3 h-1 (97 % RE) for MeOH and H2S, respectively. After O3 addition, a rapid increase in biomass content and higher fluctuations in pressure drop were observed reducing the system performance. A second treatment with oxidants was implemented feeding a O3 load of 4.8 ± 0.1 g m-3 h-1 for 7 days, followed by H2O2 addition for 23 days, registering 607.5 gbiomass L-1packing before and 367.5 gbiomass L-1packing after the oxidant addition. PCR-DGGE analysis of different operating stages showed a clear change in the bacterial populations when O3 was present while the fungal population was less affected.

At this stage, an inlet load of 150.2 ± 16.7 g m-3 h-1 of O3 was fed by 38 days favoring biomass detachment, and EC recovery and lower pressure dropped with a maximum elimination capacity of 587 g m-3 h-1 (81 % RE) and 15.8 g m-3 h-1 (97 % RE) for MeOH and H2S, respectively. After O3 addition, a rapid increase in biomass content and higher fluctuations in pressure drop were observed reducing the system performance. A second treatment with oxidants was implemented feeding a O3 load of 4.8 ± 0.1 g m-3 h-1 for 7 days, followed by H2O2 addition for 23 days, registering 607.5 gbiomass L-1packing before and 367.5 gbiomass L-1packing after the oxidant addition. PCR-DGGE analysis of different operating stages showed a clear change in the bacterial populations when O3 was present while the fungal population was less affected.

The ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to produce hydrogen sulfide and the high affinity of sulfide to react with divalent metallic cations represent an excellent option to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Different parameters have been proposed to control the hydrogen sulfide production by anaerobic bacteria, such as the organic and sulfate loading rates and the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio. This work relates the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio with the hydrogen sulfide production and dissolved lead precipitation, using ethanol as carbon and energy source in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. A maximum dissolved sulfide concentration of 470+/-7 mg S/L was obtained at a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 2.5, with sulfate and ethanol conversions of approximately 94 and 87%, respectively. The lowest dissolved sulfide concentration (145+/-10 mg S/L) was observed with a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 0.67. Substantial amounts of acetate (510-1730 mg/L) were produced and accumulated in the bioreactor from ethanol oxidation. Although only incomplete oxidation of ethanol to acetate was observed, the consortium was able to remove 99% of the dissolved lead (200 mg/L) with a feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 1.5. It was found that the feed COD/SO4(2-) ratio could be an adequate parameter to control the hydrogen sulfide production and the consequent precipitation of dissolved lead.

AbstractThe performance of biofilters inoculated with the fungus Scedosporium apiospermum was evaluated. This fungus was isolated from a biofilter which operated with toluene for more than 6 months. The experiments were performed in a 2.9 L reactor packed with vermiculite or with vermiculite‐granular activated carbon as packing material. The initial moisture content of the support and the inlet concentration of toluene were 70% and 6 g/m3, respectively. As the pressure drop increased from 5–40 mm H2O a strong initial growth was observed. Stable operation was maintained for 20 days with a moisture content of 55% and a biomass of 33 mg biomass/g dry support. These conditions were achieved with intermittent addition of culture medium, which permitted a stable elimination capacity (EC) of 100 g/m3reactorh without clogging. Pressure drop across the bed and CO2 production were related to toluene elimination. Measurement of toluene, at different levels of the biofilter, showed that the system attained higher local EC (200 g/m3rh) at the reactor outlet. These conditions were related to local humidity conditions. When the mineral medium was added periodically before the EC decreases, EC of approximately 258 g/m3rh were maintained with removal efficiencies of 98%. Under these conditions the average moisture content was 60% and 41 mg biomass/g dry support was produced. No sporulation was observed. The stimulation of the microbial population by a more bioavailable supplementary carbon source and by a surfactant pretreatment was studied in petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soils bioremediation. Two types of soils were used, Soil A which had been recently polluted and the aged Soil B. They contained 52.4 and 50.4 g of total petroleum hydrocarbons per kg of dry soil, respectively. The effect of passing a continuous small stream of air containing a low concentration of gaseous toluene through packed 0.5 l (Ø=5.5 cm) columns was studied. For Soil A, after 62 days the THPs degradation was 28% higher in the toluene treated columns than in controls. In aged Soil B the effect of toluene was not significant, probably due to bioavailability limitations. With Soil B, the combined effect of toluene as cosubstrate and a surfactant pretreatment was studied and the hydrocarbons degradation was 29% higher in the toluene-amended columns than in the controls. Toluene removal was higher than 99% in all cases. Surfactant addition increased hydrocarbon degradation when toluene was also added suggesting that the biological reaction was the limiting process. The study shows the possibilities of using gaseous substrates, such as toluene, for the in situ or ex situ treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soil in processes limited by the biological reaction. The main advantage of the treatment is that the compound can be easily and directly delivered to the polluted soil through the venting system.

The effect of biomass accumulation in a biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with polyurethane foam (PUF) was assessed in terms of hydrodynamics and void space availability in a system treating dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) vapors with an alkaliphilic consortium. A sample of colonized support from a BTF having been operating for over a year was analyzed, and it was found that the BTF void bed fraction was reduced to almost half of that calculated initially without biomass. Liquid flow through the examined BTF yielded dispersion coefficient values of 0.30 and 0.72 m(2) h(-1), for clean or colonized PUF, respectively. 3D images of attached biomass obtained with magnetic resonance imaging allowed to calculate the superficial area and the biofilm volume percentage and depth as 650 m(2) m(-3), 35%, and 0.6 mm respectively. A simplified geometric approximation of the complex PUF structure was proposed using an orthogonal 3D mesh that predicted 600 m(2) m(-3) for the same biomass content. With this simplified model, it is suggested that the optimum biomass content would be around 20% of bed volume. The activity of the microorganisms was evaluated by respirometry and the kinetics represented with a Haldane equation type. Experimentally determined parameters were used in a mathematical model to simulate the DMDS elimination capacity (EC), and better description was found when the removal experimental data were matched with a model including liquid axial dispersion in contrast to an ideal plug flow model.

This paper evaluates the effect of the irradiance, pH and temperature on the photosynthetic activity (PA) of Scenedesmus obtusiusculus under N-replete and N-deplete conditions through oxygen measurements. The highest PA values were 160 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 620 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 35 °C and pH of 8 under N-replete conditions and 3.3 mgO2 gb(-1) h(-1) at 100 μmol m(-2) s(-1), 28.5 °C and pH of 5.5 for N-deplete conditions. Those operation conditions were tested in a flat-panel photobioreactor. The biomass productivity was 0.97 gb L(-1) d(-1) under N-replete conditions with a photosynthetic efficiency (PE) of 4.4% yielding 0.85 gb mol photon(-1). Similar biomass productivity was obtained under N-deplete condition; and the lipid productivity was 0.34 gL L(-1) d(-1) with a PE of 7.8% yielding 0.39 gL mol photon(-1). The apparent activation and deactivation energies were 16.1 and 30 kcal mol(-1), and 11.9 and 15.3 kcal mol(-1), for N-replete and N-deplete conditions, respectively.

Bacterial biofilters usually exhibit a high microbial diversity and robustness, while fungal biofilters have been claimed to better withstand low moisture contents and pH values, and to be more efficient coping with hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, there are only few systematic evaluations of both biofiltration technologies. The present study compared fungal and bacterial biofiltration for the treatment of a VOC mixture (propanal, methyl isobutyl ketone-MIBK, toluene and hexanol) under the same operating conditions. Overall, fungal biofiltration supported lower elimination capacities than its bacterial counterpart (27.7 ± 8.9 vs 40.2 ± 5.4 gCm(-3) reactor h(-1)), which exhibited a final pressure drop 60% higher than that of the bacterial biofilter due to mycelial growth. The VOC mineralization ratio was also higher in the bacterial bed (≈ 63% vs ≈ 43%). However, the substrate biodegradation preference order was similar for both biofilters (propanal>hexanol>MIBK>toluene) with propanal partially inhibiting the consumption of the rest of the VOCs. Both systems supported an excellent robustness versus 24h VOC starvation episodes. The implementation of a fungal/bacterial coupled system did not significantly improve the VOC removal performance compared to the individual biofilter performances.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous contaminants that can be found both in outdoor and indoor air, posing risks to human health and the ecosystems. The treatment of air contaminated with VOCs in low concentrations can be effectively performed using biofiltration, especially when VOCs are hydrophilic. However, the performance of biofilters inoculated with bacteria has been found to be low with sparsely water soluble molecules when compared to biofilters where fungi develop. Using conceptual and mathematical models, this review presents an overview of the physical, chemical and biological mechanisms that explain the differences in the performance of fungal and bacterial biofilters. Moreover, future research needs are proposed, with an emphasis on integrated models describing the biological and chemical reactions with the mass transfer using high-resolution descriptions of the packing material.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous contaminants that can be found both in outdoor and indoor air, posing risks to human health and the ecosystems. The treatment of air contaminated with VOCs in low concentrations can be effectively performed using biofiltration, especially when VOCs are hydrophilic. However, the performance of biofilters inoculated with bacteria has been found to be low with sparsely water soluble molecules when compared to biofilters where fungi develop. Using conceptual and mathematical models, this review presents an overview of the physical, chemical and biological mechanisms that explain the differences in the performance of fungal and bacterial biofilters. Moreover, future research needs are proposed, with an emphasis on integrated models describing the biological and chemical reactions with the mass transfer using high-resolution descriptions of the packing material.
