    Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) frameworks of supercritical cryogenic fluids need to employ Real Fluid models such as cubic Equations of State (EoS) to account for thermal and inertial driven mechanisms of fluid evolution and disintegration. Accurate estimation of the non-linear variation in density, thermodynamic and transport properties is required to computationally replicate the relevant thermo and fluid dynamics involved. This article reviews the availability, performance and the implementation of common Real Fluid EoS and data-based models in CFD studies of supercritical cryogenic fluids. A systematic analysis of supercritical cryogenic fluid (N2, O2 and CH4) thermophysical property predictions by cubic (PR and SRK) and non-cubic (SBWR) Real Fluid EoS, along with Chung’s model, reveal that: (a) SRK EoS is much more accurate than PR at low temperatures of liquid phase, whereas PR is more accurate at the pseudoboiling region and (b) SBWR EoS is more accurate than PR and SRK despite requiring the same input parameters; however, it is limited by the complexity in thermodynamic property estimation. Alternative data-based models, such as tabulation and polynomial methods, have also been shown to be reliably employed in CFD. At the end, a brief discussion on the thermophysical modelling of cryogenic fluids affected by quantum effects is included, in which the unsuitability of the common real fluid EoS models for the liquid phase of such fluids is presented.

    In this work air fuel mixing and combustion dynamics in the recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE) are investigated through new theoretical analysis and complementary optical experiments of the flow field. First, a brief introduction to the basic working principles of the RSCE cycle will be presented, followed by recent test bed results relevant to pressure traces and soot emissions. These results prompted fundamental questioning of the air-fuel mixing and combustion dynamics taking place. Hypotheses of the mixing process are then presented, with differences to that of a conventional Diesel engine highlighted. Moreover, the links of the reduced emissions, air transfer processes and enhanced atomisation are explored. Initial experimental results and Schlieren images of the air flow through the poppet valves in a flow rig are reported. The Schlieren images display shockwave and Mach disk phenomena. Demonstrating supersonic air flow in the chamber is consistent with complementary CFD work. The results from the initial experiment alone are inconclusive to suggest which of the three suggested mixing mechanism hypotheses are dominating the air–fuel dynamics in the RSCE. However, one major conclusion of this work is the proof for the presence of shockwave phenomena which are atypical of conventional engines.

    In this paper we provide insight into the thermophysical properties and the dynamics of cryogenic jets. The motivation of the work is to optimise the use of cryogenic fluids in novel ultra low emission engines. For demonstration, we use conditions relevant to an internal combustion engine currently being developed by Dolphin N2 and the University of Brighton, the CryoPower recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE). The principle of this engine is a split-cycle combustion concept which can use cryogenic injection in the compression cylinder to achieve isothermal compression and thus help maximise the efficiency of the engine. Combined experimental and numerical findings are presented and the effects of atomisation dynamics of the LN 2 are explored at both sub- and supercritical conditions in order to cover different pressure and temperature conditions representative of the engine compression cycle. For subcritical regimes, we observe that the appearance of the jet coincides with the predicted atomisation regimes based on the Weber, Ohnesorge and Reynolds numbers for other common fluids. For the modelling of supercritical jets, a new methodology within OpenFoam which accounts for Real Fluid Thermodynamics has been developed and the jet behaviour under various pressure and temperature conditions has been investigated. To our knowledge this is the first study where a cryogenic spray process evolution is examined for conditions relevant to the ones prevailing in a compression chamber accounting for both sub and supercritical conditions.

    In this study, the generality and prediction accuracy of a generalised series model for the large eddy simulation of premixed and non-premixed turbulent combustion is explored. The model is based on the Taylor series expansion of the chemical source term in scalar space and implemented into OpenFOAM. The mathematical model does not depend on combustion regimes and has the correct limiting behaviour. The numerical error sources are also outlined and analysed. The model is first applied to a piloted methane/air non-premixed jet flame (Sandia Flame D). The statistical (time-averaged and RMS) results agree well with the experimental measurements, particularly with regard to the mixture fraction, velocity, temperature, and concentrations of major species CH4, CO2, H2O, and O2. However, the concentrations of the intermediates CO and H2 are over-predicted, due to the limitations of the reduced reaction mechanism employed. Then, a Bunsen-piloted flame is simulated. Most of the statistical properties of both the reactive species and progress variables are well reproduced. The only major discrepancy evident is in the temperature, which is probably attributed to the experimental uncertainties of temperature fields in the pilot stream. These findings demonstrate the model’s generality for both a premixed and non-premixed combustion simulation, as well as the accuracy of prediction of reactive species distribution.

    The paper describes the results of a comprehensive study of turbulent mixing, fuel spray dispersion and evaporation and combustion in a gas-turbine combustor geometry (the DLR Generic Single Sector Combustor) with the aid of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). An Eulerian description of the continuous phase is adopted and is coupled with a Lagrangian formulation of the dispersed phase. The sub-grid scale (sgs) probability density function approach in conjunction with the stochastic fields solution method is used to account for sgs turbulence-chemistry interactions. Stochastic models are used to represent the influence of sgs fluctuations on droplet dispersion and evaporation. Two different test cases are simulated involving reacting and non-reacting conditions. The simulations of the underlying flow field are satisfying in terms of mean statistics and the structure of the flame is captured accurately. Detailed spray simulations are also presented and compared with measurements where the fuel spray model is shown to reproduce the measured Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) and the velocity of the droplets accurately.

    The implementation of reduced syngas combustion mechanisms in numerical combustion studies has become inevitable in order to reduce the computational cost without compromising the predictions' accuracy. In this regard, the present study evaluates the predictive capabilities of selected detailed, reduced, and global syngas chemical mechanisms by comparing the numerical results with experimental laminar flame speed (LFS) values of lean premixed (LPM) syngas flames. The comparisons are carried out at varying equivalence ratios, syngas compositions, operating pressures, and preheat temperatures to represent a range of operating conditions of modern fuel flexible combustion systems. NOx emissions predicted by the detailed mechanism, GRI-Mech. 3.0, are also used to study the accuracy of the selected mechanisms under these operating conditions. Moreover, the selected mechanisms' accuracy in predicting the laminar flame thickness (LFT), species concentrations of the reactants, and OH profiles at different equivalence ratios and syngas compositions are investigated as well. The LFS is generally observed to increase with increasing equivalence ratio, hydrogen content in the syngas, and preheat temperature, while it is decreased with increasing operating pressure. This trend is followed by all mechanisms understudy. The global mechanisms of Watanabe–Otaka and Jones–Lindstedt for syngas are consistently observed to over-predict and under-predict the LFS up to an average of 60% and 80%, respectively. The reduced mechanism of Slavinskaya has an average error of less than 20%, which is comparable to the average error of the GRI-Mech. 3.0. It however over-predicts the flame thickness by up to 30% when compared to GRI-Mech. 3.0. The NO prediction by Li mechanism and the reduced mechanisms are observed to be within 10% prediction range of the GRI-Mech. 3.0 at intermediate equivalence ratio (φ=0.74) up to stoichiometry. Moving toward more lean conditions, there is significant difference between the GRI-Mech. 3.0 NO prediction and those of the reduced mechanisms due to relative importance of the prompt NOx at lower temperature compared to thermal NOx that is only accounted for by the GRI-Mech. 3.0.

    Abstract The objective of this paper is to review the progress made in understanding the effects of fuel composition on premixed gas turbine combustion, with a special emphasis on system stability and emissions, for hydrogen-rich synthetic gas (syngas) mixtures. This is driven by the rising interest in the use of hydrogen blends and syngas in combined cycle power plants, as an alternative to standard natural gas. Typical applications where such mixtures are used include the recycling of hydrogen by-product from industry as well as promising pre-combustion carbon capture methods like fuel reforming or gasification integrated with gas turbine combined cycle plants. Syngas is mainly a mixture of H2, CO and CH4; its composition can vary due to fluctuations in the process’s conditions but can also dramatically change if the feedstock is modified like coal or biomass grades in gasification. Due to the substantially different chemical, transport and thermal properties that distinguish the syngas components, especially H2, when compared with conventional hydrocarbon fuels, these non-standard fuels pose several challenges in premixed combustion. These challenges are reviewed in this paper along with the combustion fundamentals of these fuels. A survey of available technologies able to handle syngas and hydrogen-rich fuel in general is provided reflecting the difficulties encountered while using these fuels in real large scale commercial applications. We find that a limited number of options exist today for fully premixed combustion, but promising designs are under development. Finally, the ever growing use of numerical simulation to cost-effectively study full scale combustion systems—with Large Eddy Simulations (LES) being at the forefront as a compromise between accuracy and computational cost—justifies the simultaneous review of the different numerical attempts to simulate hydrogen-containing fuel mixtures and syngas in premixed combustion. Challenges specific to performing LES calculations for these reacting flows are highlighted. We find that, while the literature on premixed LES methane combustion is abundant, LES of premixed syngas and hydrogen-rich fuels combustion is comparatively scarce. Only few attempts were made so far showing the need for more research effort in this area to help tackle the challenges presented by these fuels.

    Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) frameworks of supercritical cryogenic fluids need to employ Real Fluid models such as cubic Equations of State (EoS) to account for thermal and inertial driven mechanisms of fluid evolution and disintegration. Accurate estimation of the non-linear variation in density, thermodynamic and transport properties is required to computationally replicate the relevant thermo and fluid dynamics involved. This article reviews the availability, performance and the implementation of common Real Fluid EoS and data-based models in CFD studies of supercritical cryogenic fluids. A systematic analysis of supercritical cryogenic fluid (N2, O2 and CH4) thermophysical property predictions by cubic (PR and SRK) and non-cubic (SBWR) Real Fluid EoS, along with Chung’s model, reveal that: (a) SRK EoS is much more accurate than PR at low temperatures of liquid phase, whereas PR is more accurate at the pseudoboiling region and (b) SBWR EoS is more accurate than PR and SRK despite requiring the same input parameters; however, it is limited by the complexity in thermodynamic property estimation. Alternative data-based models, such as tabulation and polynomial methods, have also been shown to be reliably employed in CFD. At the end, a brief discussion on the thermophysical modelling of cryogenic fluids affected by quantum effects is included, in which the unsuitability of the common real fluid EoS models for the liquid phase of such fluids is presented.

    In this work air fuel mixing and combustion dynamics in the recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE) are investigated through new theoretical analysis and complementary optical experiments of the flow field. First, a brief introduction to the basic working principles of the RSCE cycle will be presented, followed by recent test bed results relevant to pressure traces and soot emissions. These results prompted fundamental questioning of the air-fuel mixing and combustion dynamics taking place. Hypotheses of the mixing process are then presented, with differences to that of a conventional Diesel engine highlighted. Moreover, the links of the reduced emissions, air transfer processes and enhanced atomisation are explored. Initial experimental results and Schlieren images of the air flow through the poppet valves in a flow rig are reported. The Schlieren images display shockwave and Mach disk phenomena. Demonstrating supersonic air flow in the chamber is consistent with complementary CFD work. The results from the initial experiment alone are inconclusive to suggest which of the three suggested mixing mechanism hypotheses are dominating the air–fuel dynamics in the RSCE. However, one major conclusion of this work is the proof for the presence of shockwave phenomena which are atypical of conventional engines.

    In this paper we provide insight into the thermophysical properties and the dynamics of cryogenic jets. The motivation of the work is to optimise the use of cryogenic fluids in novel ultra low emission engines. For demonstration, we use conditions relevant to an internal combustion engine currently being developed by Dolphin N2 and the University of Brighton, the CryoPower recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE). The principle of this engine is a split-cycle combustion concept which can use cryogenic injection in the compression cylinder to achieve isothermal compression and thus help maximise the efficiency of the engine. Combined experimental and numerical findings are presented and the effects of atomisation dynamics of the LN 2 are explored at both sub- and supercritical conditions in order to cover different pressure and temperature conditions representative of the engine compression cycle. For subcritical regimes, we observe that the appearance of the jet coincides with the predicted atomisation regimes based on the Weber, Ohnesorge and Reynolds numbers for other common fluids. For the modelling of supercritical jets, a new methodology within OpenFoam which accounts for Real Fluid Thermodynamics has been developed and the jet behaviour under various pressure and temperature conditions has been investigated. To our knowledge this is the first study where a cryogenic spray process evolution is examined for conditions relevant to the ones prevailing in a compression chamber accounting for both sub and supercritical conditions.

    In this study, the generality and prediction accuracy of a generalised series model for the large eddy simulation of premixed and non-premixed turbulent combustion is explored. The model is based on the Taylor series expansion of the chemical source term in scalar space and implemented into OpenFOAM. The mathematical model does not depend on combustion regimes and has the correct limiting behaviour. The numerical error sources are also outlined and analysed. The model is first applied to a piloted methane/air non-premixed jet flame (Sandia Flame D). The statistical (time-averaged and RMS) results agree well with the experimental measurements, particularly with regard to the mixture fraction, velocity, temperature, and concentrations of major species CH4, CO2, H2O, and O2. However, the concentrations of the intermediates CO and H2 are over-predicted, due to the limitations of the reduced reaction mechanism employed. Then, a Bunsen-piloted flame is simulated. Most of the statistical properties of both the reactive species and progress variables are well reproduced. The only major discrepancy evident is in the temperature, which is probably attributed to the experimental uncertainties of temperature fields in the pilot stream. These findings demonstrate the model’s generality for both a premixed and non-premixed combustion simulation, as well as the accuracy of prediction of reactive species distribution.

    The paper describes the results of a comprehensive study of turbulent mixing, fuel spray dispersion and evaporation and combustion in a gas-turbine combustor geometry (the DLR Generic Single Sector Combustor) with the aid of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). An Eulerian description of the continuous phase is adopted and is coupled with a Lagrangian formulation of the dispersed phase. The sub-grid scale (sgs) probability density function approach in conjunction with the stochastic fields solution method is used to account for sgs turbulence-chemistry interactions. Stochastic models are used to represent the influence of sgs fluctuations on droplet dispersion and evaporation. Two different test cases are simulated involving reacting and non-reacting conditions. The simulations of the underlying flow field are satisfying in terms of mean statistics and the structure of the flame is captured accurately. Detailed spray simulations are also presented and compared with measurements where the fuel spray model is shown to reproduce the measured Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) and the velocity of the droplets accurately.

    The implementation of reduced syngas combustion mechanisms in numerical combustion studies has become inevitable in order to reduce the computational cost without compromising the predictions' accuracy. In this regard, the present study evaluates the predictive capabilities of selected detailed, reduced, and global syngas chemical mechanisms by comparing the numerical results with experimental laminar flame speed (LFS) values of lean premixed (LPM) syngas flames. The comparisons are carried out at varying equivalence ratios, syngas compositions, operating pressures, and preheat temperatures to represent a range of operating conditions of modern fuel flexible combustion systems. NOx emissions predicted by the detailed mechanism, GRI-Mech. 3.0, are also used to study the accuracy of the selected mechanisms under these operating conditions. Moreover, the selected mechanisms' accuracy in predicting the laminar flame thickness (LFT), species concentrations of the reactants, and OH profiles at different equivalence ratios and syngas compositions are investigated as well. The LFS is generally observed to increase with increasing equivalence ratio, hydrogen content in the syngas, and preheat temperature, while it is decreased with increasing operating pressure. This trend is followed by all mechanisms understudy. The global mechanisms of Watanabe–Otaka and Jones–Lindstedt for syngas are consistently observed to over-predict and under-predict the LFS up to an average of 60% and 80%, respectively. The reduced mechanism of Slavinskaya has an average error of less than 20%, which is comparable to the average error of the GRI-Mech. 3.0. It however over-predicts the flame thickness by up to 30% when compared to GRI-Mech. 3.0. The NO prediction by Li mechanism and the reduced mechanisms are observed to be within 10% prediction range of the GRI-Mech. 3.0 at intermediate equivalence ratio (φ=0.74) up to stoichiometry. Moving toward more lean conditions, there is significant difference between the GRI-Mech. 3.0 NO prediction and those of the reduced mechanisms due to relative importance of the prompt NOx at lower temperature compared to thermal NOx that is only accounted for by the GRI-Mech. 3.0.

    Abstract The objective of this paper is to review the progress made in understanding the effects of fuel composition on premixed gas turbine combustion, with a special emphasis on system stability and emissions, for hydrogen-rich synthetic gas (syngas) mixtures. This is driven by the rising interest in the use of hydrogen blends and syngas in combined cycle power plants, as an alternative to standard natural gas. Typical applications where such mixtures are used include the recycling of hydrogen by-product from industry as well as promising pre-combustion carbon capture methods like fuel reforming or gasification integrated with gas turbine combined cycle plants. Syngas is mainly a mixture of H2, CO and CH4; its composition can vary due to fluctuations in the process’s conditions but can also dramatically change if the feedstock is modified like coal or biomass grades in gasification. Due to the substantially different chemical, transport and thermal properties that distinguish the syngas components, especially H2, when compared with conventional hydrocarbon fuels, these non-standard fuels pose several challenges in premixed combustion. These challenges are reviewed in this paper along with the combustion fundamentals of these fuels. A survey of available technologies able to handle syngas and hydrogen-rich fuel in general is provided reflecting the difficulties encountered while using these fuels in real large scale commercial applications. We find that a limited number of options exist today for fully premixed combustion, but promising designs are under development. Finally, the ever growing use of numerical simulation to cost-effectively study full scale combustion systems—with Large Eddy Simulations (LES) being at the forefront as a compromise between accuracy and computational cost—justifies the simultaneous review of the different numerical attempts to simulate hydrogen-containing fuel mixtures and syngas in premixed combustion. Challenges specific to performing LES calculations for these reacting flows are highlighted. We find that, while the literature on premixed LES methane combustion is abundant, LES of premixed syngas and hydrogen-rich fuels combustion is comparatively scarce. Only few attempts were made so far showing the need for more research effort in this area to help tackle the challenges presented by these fuels.
