Recently, the need of improved resource trading has arisen due to resource limitations and energy optimization problems. Various platforms supporting resource exchange and waste reuse in industrial symbiotic networks are being developed. However, the actors participating in these networks still mainly act based on predefined patterns, without taking the possible alternatives into account, usually due to the difficulty of properly evaluating them. Therefore, incorporating intelligence into the platforms that these networks use, supporting the involved actors to automatically find resources able to cover their needs, is still of high importance both for the companies and the whole ecosystem. In this work, we present a hybrid recommender system to support users in properly identifying the symbiotic relationships that might provide them an improved performance. This recommender combines a graph-based model for resource similarities, while it follows the basic case-based reasoning processes to generate resource recommendations. Several criteria, apart from resource similarity, are taken into account to generate, each time, the list of the most suitable solutions. As highlighted through a use case scenario, the proposed system could play a key role in the emerging industrial symbiotic platforms, as the majority of them still do not incorporate automatic decision support mechanisms.

One of the major problems to design and implement a control/supervision system for a process lies in the need to establish an ad-hoc system for each process installation. On the other side, an open challenge related to the deployment of Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSSs) is the interoperability of the different methods used, in order to allow interaction and reuse of different data mining methods and the use of methods based on a model or an expert. Thus, this paper proposes the use of visual workflows, to enable the automation of the design task and the implementation of Intelligent Process Control Systems (IPCSs). The framework will allow the user to specify the design and control of a concrete process as well as the required data-driven and expert models using a graphical workflow environment. The framework is based on a three-layer architecture: first, a comprehensive data science flow description layer (dataflow layer) to produce/discover data-driven models from process data; second, a flowchart of the different components of the process (process-design flow layer) to obtain a simulation model from the design. Finally, the on-line IPCS (process control workflow layer), where the different data-driven models, expert-based models and intelligent reasoning methods interoperate to control and supervise the process. Thus, the resulting system can automatically generate both simulation models of the process and programming code to control and supervise the process, using workflows designed for each particular installation. The case study is focused on the supervision of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located in the Barcelona region. Gas turbines play a key role in generating power. It is really important that they work efficiently, safely, and reliably. However, their performance can be adversely affected by factors such as component wear, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations, often leading to abnormal patterns indicative of potential failures. As a result, anomaly detection has become an area of active research. Matrix Profile (MP) methods have emerged as a promising solution for identifying significant deviations in time series data from normal operational patterns. While most existing MP methods focus on vibration analysis of gas turbines, this paper introduces a novel approach using the outlet power signal. This modified approach, termed Cluster-based Matrix Profile (CMP) analysis, facilitates the identification of abnormal patterns and subsequent anomaly detection within the gas turbine engine system. Significantly, CMP analysis not only accelerates processing speed, but also provides user-friendly support information for operators. The experimental results on real-world gas turbines demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in the early detection of anomalies and potential system failures.

The paper presents a preliminary analysis of some intelligent decision support systems for sustainability from the point of view of the end user experience, by comparing up to four available systems. The role that these kind of ICT tools play on the improvement of several sustainability goals in different scenarios is analyzed as well. The results of this research are the outcome of an innovative methodology for teaching Intelligent Decision Support Systems to students of a master on Sustainability given at the UPC. The interest of the proposal from the educational point of view is that in short time it empowers students not necessarily skilled in ICT to get a useful overview of what intelligent decision support systems are and how they can be used in their professional practices. This modified approach, termed Cluster-based Matrix Profile (CMP) analysis, facilitates the identification of abnormal patterns and subsequent anomaly detection within the gas turbine engine system. Significantly, CMP analysis not only accelerates processing speed, but also provides user-friendly support information for operators. The experimental results on real-world gas turbines demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in the early detection of anomalies and potential system failures.

The paper presents a preliminary analysis of some intelligent decision support systems for sustainability from the point of view of the end user experience, by comparing up to four available systems. The role that these kind of ICT tools play on the improvement of several sustainability goals in different scenarios is analyzed as well. The results of this research are the outcome of an innovative methodology for teaching Intelligent Decision Support Systems to students of a master on Sustainability given at the UPC. The interest of the proposal from the educational point of view is that in short time it empowers students not necessarily skilled in ICT to get a useful overview of what intelligent decision support systems are and how they can be used in their professional practices.
