The present study reveals huge amounts of household uncollected waste released into the natural environment outside the official statistics of rural dumpsites. Despite the expansion of waste collection coverage towards rural areas since 2010, the problem of illegal dumping practice is difficult to solve. The improvement of collection efficiency, better law enforcement, and surveillance of environmental authorities coupled with educational and environmental awareness are necessary steps to combat this bad practice. A circular economy paradigm must be enacted in rural regions through separate collection schemes and to improve cost-efficient alternatives, such as home composting, and traditional and creative reuse practices, particularly in less developed regions.

The increasingly tensions rising between society’s need for resources and space on the one hand, and the capacity of the land to support these needs on the other hand lead to unprecedented changes in landscape configuration, and hence, to the environment. This paper analyzes changes in the agricultural landscape of Podoleni, Neamt County, Romania, in spatio - temporal terms, as a result of the modernization of the ground processing techniques, types of crops, and the degree of fragmentation of land parcels. The study was conducted using Geographical Information Systems techniques, the main materials used in the analysis are topographic maps from different representative periods, and the 2006 orthophotomaps. Application of GIS techniques at a detailed scale (1:5000) allows an efficient management of land use for local authorities. The results highlight the optimal management of agricultural land so as to maintain a balance between their basic function (food needs) and preservation of nature (landscape, environment).

Urban waste generation due to economic development and living standards raise serious problems in providing sustainable waste management of cities. Because not all of Romania's urban population are served by sanitation services, some wastes are generated and uncollected being often uncontrolled disposed contributing to urban pollution. This paper aims on the one hand one to estimate the amount of urban waste generated and uncollected and on the other hand to perform a spatial analysis of these wastes at the Romanian counties level using thematic cartography. Outlined regional disparities allows a more accurate assessment of the vulnerability of cities to waste pollution. Total urban population access to waste collection services is a basic condition for developing an efficient waste management system and to reduce pollution. The current urban waste management system must improve to comply objectives and targets imposed by the EU acquis.

Five main stages related to C&DW management are highlighted such as: (i) illegal dumping on public lands; (ii) C&DW collection and disposal in urban landfills; (iii) C&DW treatment and reuse in civil constructions (roads, coating material for landfills); (iv) regional integrated waste management systems; (v) recycling of building materials (e.g., cement industry and recycled aggregates). The paper reveals the poor monitoring of C&DW flows across Romanian counties and the geographical dimension of this waste stream collected by waste operators. The paper examines the current challenges in Romania and it reveals the future prospects to provide a reliable transition towards sustainable C&DW management activities. The targeted route: waste fractions can be recycled and/or reused as building materials via integrated waste management systems, which enable a circular economy in urban and rural municipalities.

Water pollution is caused in rural areas, especially by uncontrolled waste deposits located in river bed and in urban areas is discharged, irregular, untreated sewage. The Cuejdiu River is a tributary of the Bitriţa River in the left side, with a total length of 24 km. Evaluation of water quality of the Cuejdiu River was achieved by processing the results obtained from tests analyzed for 30 samples, taken on March 17, 2012, between the mouth of the River Bestriţa and up to the exit of the village Cuiejdi. Analysis of water samples were performed in the laboratory of the Department of Geography, at the Faculty of Geography and Geology and were taken into account several parameters such as conductivity, pH, total acidity, nitrates, chlorine. The values obtained were cartographically represented to highlight differences between the sector that cross of the rural area and the sector located on urban area. Water Management System Neamţ realizes assessments of ecological and chemical status of the river Cuejdiu only in urban areas, classifying water quality in relation to general indicators. Thus, data obtained over a period of 10 years, from 2000 to 2010, and performing through charts, helped us to observe the time evolution of water quality in the area. The impact of human activities is evident in both urban and rural areas. In urban area the connections made by citizens, particularly those who live on the ground blocks, to the rainwater system, instead of sewerage systems, lead to the degradation of water quality. As regards the rural area, the situation is just as difficult, meaning that the waste discharged into the riverbed changes the chemical composition of wate

The lack of waste collection services in such peri-urban communities favored the illegal waste disposal practices particularly prior to EU accession. The extension of waste collection services from main cities to such areas is compulsory in order to mitigate the environmental risks and the public health threats. The paper estimates the amounts of household waste susceptible to be uncontrolled disposed of by peri-urban villages in different geographical areas of North-East region with a particular focus on Neamt county. The paper points out that these rural settlements should receive the same attention concerning the municipal waste management services as the main urban areas. Traditional recovery of waste fractions at the household level (e.g., home composting) should be further promoted in such areas in order to avoid illegal dumping issue and to prevent the landfill of biodegradable waste as requested by EU regulations.

The difficulties related to methodological analysis are due to such rural diversity and the partial lack of comparable indicators which lead to the development of objectives and indicators that respond to both national and international needs. Harmonization should be easier in view of the common goal, but policies and strategies do not always provide the required coherence. The presence of programmatic documents such as the Agenda 2030 reveals a path that can lead to good practices and reliable results even if they do not offer universal or global certainties.

This paper aims to capture the importance of demographic dimension in the sustainable development process of the rural space. From a series of statistics data we realized an analysis of demographic indicators, which it helped us to trace the development trends characteristic for our area of study. To understand the evolution in time and the implications of human resource in the process of development it was necessary referencing them with national or local historical events. Demographic dimension analysis highlights the development stage of rural space and help the formulation of the future local policies that regard the sustainable developmen

These areas are ordinary in the proximity of built-up areasand buffers areas of 1km were delimited for every locality. Based onvarious map layers in vector formats ( land use, rivers, buil-up areas, roads etc) an assessment method is performed to highlight the potentialareas vulnerable to illegal dumping inside these buffer areas at localscale. The results are corelated to field observations and currentsituation of waste management systems. The maps outline local disparitiesdue to various geographical conditions of county. This approach is anecesary tool in EIA studies particularly for rural waste managementsystems at local and regional scale which are less studied in currentliterature than urban areas.
