    Abstract The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (α) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.

    The main goal of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is to operate with a high value of power-exhaust-relevant parameter P /R in plasma scenarios similar to those foreseen for the Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) in terms of low collisionality and neutral opacity. For these unique characteristics, accurate modelling of the principal scenario is necessary for machine designing. In edge numerical codes, cross-field transport profiles have a high impact on modelling results. This work aims at providing a coherent set of transport parameters for DTT full-power (FP) single-null (SN) scenario edge modelling. To evaluate such parameters for DTT, a transport analysis on the current machine has been performed using SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE and SOLPS-ITER. The transport parameters to be used in the simulations of the DTT single-null scenario were selected using two complementary methods. The first is the modelling of JET and Alcator C-Mod (C-Mod) with SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE and SOLPS-ITER, validating transport parameters by comparing modelling results to experimental data from pulses which are considered DTT-relevant. JET pulses were selected with the highest auxiliary input power (from 29 to 33 MW), plasma current and toroidal field to better match DTT parameters; nitrogen and neon seeded pulses were selected to check possible seeding material dependencies. The considered C-Mod pulse better matches DTT plasma density and neutral opacity. Transport parameters are then scaled to DTT according to scaling laws. The second method derives the transport parameters by tuning their values inside the DTT separatrix to reproduce the pedestal profiles predicted by the EPED model via the Europed code and applied in DTT. The derived set of DTT transport parameters is consistent with the results obtained by modelling present machines, reproduces the expected heat flux decay length in detached conditions and, inside the separatrix, reproduces the predicted pedestal using transport parameters which are coherent with what is predicted by the quasi-linear turbulent model QuaLiKiz.

The derived set of DTT transport parameters is consistent with the results obtained by modelling present machines, reproduces the expected heat flux decay length in detached conditions and, inside the separatrix, reproduces the predicted pedestal using transport parameters which are coherent with what is predicted by the quasi-linear turbulent model QuaLiKiz.

    This work studied the feasibility of an X-point radiator (XPR) in the DTT single-null full-power scenario using the edge modelling code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. It predicts that the XPR is accessible in DTT using neon as seeding impurity; the accessibility to the configuration is compatible with the reduced model developed for ASDEX Upgrade and TCV. The formation of the X-point radiator in DTT leads to strong impurity and temperature redistribution with respect to standard detached plasmas and the formation of a cold volume with Te<10eV as observed in other machines. The transition is sudden and had major consequences on pumping, neutral penetration and separatrix temperature. The operational window in impurity concentration between XPR formation and the plasma radiative collapse was estimated to be large. A strong bifurcation is observed at the XPR onset; the bifurcation allows for impurity seeding and concentration reduction after the XPR on-set even lower than in non-XPR standard detached cases.

    Abstract The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (α) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.

    Abstract The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (α) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.

    The main goal of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is to operate with a high value of power-exhaust-relevant parameter P /R in plasma scenarios similar to those foreseen for the Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) in terms of low collisionality and neutral opacity. For these unique characteristics, accurate modelling of the principal scenario is necessary for machine designing. In edge numerical codes, cross-field transport profiles have a high impact on modelling results. This work aims at providing a coherent set of transport parameters for DTT full-power (FP) single-null (SN) scenario edge modelling. To evaluate such parameters for DTT, a transport analysis on the current machine has been performed using SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE and SOLPS-ITER. The transport parameters to be used in the simulations of the DTT single-null scenario were selected using two complementary methods. The first is the modelling of JET and Alcator C-Mod (C-Mod) with SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE and SOLPS-ITER, validating transport parameters by comparing modelling results to experimental data from pulses which are considered DTT-relevant. JET pulses were selected with the highest auxiliary input power (from 29 to 33 MW), plasma current and toroidal field to better match DTT parameters; nitrogen and neon seeded pulses were selected to check possible seeding material dependencies. The considered C-Mod pulse better matches DTT plasma density and neutral opacity. Transport parameters are then scaled to DTT according to scaling laws. The second method derives the transport parameters by tuning their values inside the DTT separatrix to reproduce the pedestal profiles predicted by the EPED model via the Europed code and applied in DTT. The derived set of DTT transport parameters is consistent with the results obtained by modelling present machines, reproduces the expected heat flux decay length in detached conditions and, inside the separatrix, reproduces the predicted pedestal using transport parameters which are coherent with what is predicted by the quasi-linear turbulent model QuaLiKiz.

    This work studied the feasibility of an X-point radiator (XPR) in the DTT single-null full-power scenario using the edge modelling code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. It predicts that the XPR is accessible in DTT using neon as seeding impurity; the accessibility to the configuration is compatible with the reduced model developed for ASDEX Upgrade and TCV. The formation of the X-point radiator in DTT leads to strong impurity and temperature redistribution with respect to standard detached plasmas and the formation of a cold volume with Te<10eV as observed in other machines. The transition is sudden and had major consequences on pumping, neutral penetration and separatrix temperature. The operational window in impurity concentration between XPR formation and the plasma radiative collapse was estimated to be large. A strong bifurcation is observed at the XPR onset; the bifurcation allows for impurity seeding and concentration reduction after the XPR on-set even lower than in non-XPR standard detached cases.

    This work studied the feasibility of an X-point radiator (XPR) in the DTT single-null full-power scenario using the edge modelling code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. It predicts that the XPR is accessible in DTT using neon as seeding impurity; the accessibility to the configuration is compatible with the reduced model developed for ASDEX Upgrade and TCV. The formation of the X-point radiator in DTT leads to strong impurity and temperature redistribution with respect to standard detached plasmas and the formation of a cold volume with Te<10eV as observed in other machines. The transition is sudden and had major consequences on pumping, neutral penetration and separatrix temperature. The operational window in impurity concentration between XPR formation and the plasma radiative collapse was estimated to be large. A strong bifurcation is observed at the XPR onset; the bifurcation allows for impurity seeding and concentration reduction after the XPR on-set even lower than in non-XPR standard detached cases.
