Thawing permafrost creates risks to the environment, economy and culture in Arctic coastal communities. Identification of these risks and the inclusion of the societal context and the relevant stakeholder involvement is crucial in risk management and for future sustainability, yet the dual dimensions of risk and risk perception is often ignored in conceptual risk frameworks. In this paper we present a risk framework for Arctic coastal communities. Our framework builds on the notion of the dual dimensions of risk, as both physically and socially constructed, and it places risk perception and the coproduction of risk management with local stakeholders as central components into the model. Central to our framework is the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. A conceptual model and processual framework with a description of successive steps is developed to facilitate the identification of risks of thawing permafrost in a collaboration between local communities and scientists. Our conceptual framework motivates coproduction of risk management with locals in the identification of these risks from permafrost thaw and the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Climatic factors, especially temperature, precipitation, and humidity play an important role in disease transmission. As the Arctic changes at an unprecedented rate due to climate change, understanding how climatic factors and climate change affect infectious disease rates is important for minimizing human and economic costs. The purpose of this systematic review was to compile recent studies in the field and compare the results to a previously published review. English language searches were conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and PLOS One. Russian language searches were conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library "eLibrary.ru". This systematic review yielded 22 articles (51%) published in English and 21 articles (49%) published in Russian since 2012. Articles about zoonotic and vector-borne diseases accounted for 67% (n = 29) of the review. Tick-borne diseases, tularemia, anthrax, and vibriosis were the most researched diseases likely to be impacted by climatic factors in the Arctic. Increased temperature and precipitation are predicted to have the greatest impact on infectious diseases in the Arctic.

Aim: Adverse human-driven environmental change, including the climate, is having an increasing impact on the Arctic environment and its ecosystems. There has been immense interest in understanding the health risks related to climate change in the Arctic region. In this article, we review recent evidence related to climate change and its impacts on the health of the Arctic population. Methods: We summarize current evidence related to primary, secondary and tertiary health effects in the Arctic. We explore a broad range of effects on health including increased exposure to extreme weather, impacts from changes in water quality, air quality, contaminant exposure, food systems and patterns of infectious diseases. We also briefly discuss mental health effects in the Arctic. We conclude by examining further challenges and opportunities for research in this field and advocate the need for adaptation options in the Arctic. Results: We find that there is a large amount of literature that is focusing on the human health effects in the Arctic but there are still research gaps in terms of understanding these compared with those at lower latitudes. We point out the need for filling several of these knowledge gaps to project future health effects of climate change in the Arctic. Conclusions: There is a need for integrated adaptation strategies in the Arctic that fully account for the health impacts and consider indigenous perspectives.

Aim: Adverse human-driven environmental change, including the climate, is having an increasing impact on the Arctic environment and its ecosystems. There has been immense interest in understanding the health risks related to climate change in the Arctic region. In this article, we review recent evidence related to climate change and its impacts on the health of the Arctic population. Methods: We summarize current evidence related to primary, secondary and tertiary health effects in the Arctic. We explore a broad range of effects on health including increased exposure to extreme weather, impacts from changes in water quality, air quality, contaminant exposure, food systems and patterns of infectious diseases. We also briefly discuss mental health effects in the Arctic. We conclude by examining further challenges and opportunities for research in this field and advocate the need for adaptation options in the Arctic. Results: We find that there is a large amount of literature that is focusing on the human health effects in the Arctic but there are still research gaps in terms of understanding these compared with those at lower latitudes. We point out the need for filling several of these knowledge gaps to project future health effects of climate change in the Arctic. Conclusions: There is a need for integrated adaptation strategies in the Arctic that fully account for the health impacts and consider indigenous perspectives.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be used as chemical sentinels for the assessment of anthropogenic influences on Arctic environmental change. We present an overview of studies on PCBs in the Arctic and combine these with the findings from ArcRisk—a major European Union-funded project aimed at examining the effects of climate change on the transport of contaminants to and their behaviour of in the Arctic—to provide a case study on the behaviour and impact of PCBs over time in the Arctic. PCBs in the Arctic have shown declining trends in the environment over the last few decades. Atmospheric long-range transport from secondary and primary sources is the major input of PCBs to the Arctic region. Modelling of the atmospheric PCB composition and behaviour showed some increases in environmental concentrations in a warmer Arctic, but the general decline in PCB levels is still the most prominent feature. ‘Within-Arctic’ processing of PCBs will be affected by climate change-related processes such as changing wet deposition. These in turn will influence biological exposure and uptake of PCBs. The pan-Arctic rivers draining large Arctic/sub-Arctic catchments provide a significant source of PCBs to the Arctic Ocean, although changes in hydrology/sediment transport combined with a changing marine environment remain areas of uncertainty with regard to PCB fate. Indirect effects of climate change on human exposure, such as a changing diet will influence and possibly reduce PCB exposure for indigenous peoples. About three-quarters of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and potential health impacts of these diseases are higher where infectious disease surveillance and access to health care and public health services are limited. This is especially the case for remote circumarctic regions, where drivers for endemic, emerging, and re-emerging zoonotic diseases include anthropogenic influences, such as pollution by long-range transport of industrial chemicals, climate change, loss of biodiversity and ecosystem alterations. In addition to these, indirect effects including natural changes in food web dynamics, appearance of invasive species and thawing permafrost also affect the risk of zoonotic disease spill-over. In other words, the Arctic represents a changing world where pollution, loss of biodiversity and habitat, and maritime activity are likely driving forward occurrence of infectious diseases. As a broad international consortium with a wide range of expertise, we here describe a selection of case studies highlighting the importance of a One Health approach to zoonoses in the circumarctic, encompassing human health, animal health, and environmental health aspects. The cases highlight critical gaps in monitoring and current knowledge, focusing on environmental stressors and lifestyle factors, and they are examples of current occurrences in the Arctic that inform on critically needed actions to prepare us for the future. Through these presentations, we recommend measures to enhance awareness and management of existing and emerging zoonoses with epidemic and pandemic potential while also focusing on the impacts of various environmental stressors and lifestyle factors on zoonoses in the Arctic.

Thawing permafrost creates risks to the environment, economy and culture in Arctic coastal communities. Identification of these risks and the inclusion of the societal context and the relevant stakeholder involvement is crucial in risk management and for future sustainability, yet the dual dimensions of risk and risk perception is often ignored in conceptual risk frameworks. In this paper we present a risk framework for Arctic coastal communities. Our framework builds on the notion of the dual dimensions of risk, as both physically and socially constructed, and it places risk perception and the coproduction of risk management with local stakeholders as central components into the model. Central to our framework is the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. A conceptual model and processual framework with a description of successive steps is developed to facilitate the identification of risks of thawing permafrost in a collaboration between local communities and scientists. Our conceptual framework motivates coproduction of risk management with locals in the identification of these risks from permafrost thaw and the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Climatic factors, especially temperature, precipitation, and humidity play an important role in disease transmission. As the Arctic changes at an unprecedented rate due to climate change, understanding how climatic factors and climate change affect infectious disease rates is important for minimizing human and economic costs. The purpose of this systematic review was to compile recent studies in the field and compare the results to a previously published review. English language searches were conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and PLOS One. Russian language searches were conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library "eLibrary.ru". This systematic review yielded 22 articles (51%) published in English and 21 articles (49%) published in Russian since 2012. Articles about zoonotic and vector-borne diseases accounted for 67% (n = 29) of the review. Tick-borne diseases, tularemia, anthrax, and vibriosis were the most researched diseases likely to be impacted by climatic factors in the Arctic. Increased temperature and precipitation are predicted to have the greatest impact on infectious diseases in the Arctic.

Aim: Adverse human-driven environmental change, including the climate, is having an increasing impact on the Arctic environment and its ecosystems. There has been immense interest in understanding the health risks related to climate change in the Arctic region. In this article, we review recent evidence related to climate change and its impacts on the health of the Arctic population. Methods: We summarize current evidence related to primary, secondary and tertiary health effects in the Arctic. We explore a broad range of effects on health including increased exposure to extreme weather, impacts from changes in water quality, air quality, contaminant exposure, food systems and patterns of infectious diseases. We also briefly discuss mental health effects in the Arctic. We conclude by examining further challenges and opportunities for research in this field and advocate the need for adaptation options in the Arctic. Results: We find that there is a large amount of literature that is focusing on the human health effects in the Arctic but there are still research gaps in terms of understanding these compared with those at lower latitudes. We point out the need for filling several of these knowledge gaps to project future health effects of climate change in the Arctic. Conclusions: There is a need for integrated adaptation strategies in the Arctic that fully account for the health impacts and consider indigenous perspectives.

Aim: Adverse human-driven environmental change, including the climate, is having an increasing impact on the Arctic environment and its ecosystems. There has been immense interest in understanding the health risks related to climate change in the Arctic region. In this article, we review recent evidence related to climate change and its impacts on the health of the Arctic population. Methods: We summarize current evidence related to primary, secondary and tertiary health effects in the Arctic. We explore a broad range of effects on health including increased exposure to extreme weather, impacts from changes in water quality, air quality, contaminant exposure, food systems and patterns of infectious diseases. We also briefly discuss mental health effects in the Arctic. We conclude by examining further challenges and opportunities for research in this field and advocate the need for adaptation options in the Arctic. Results: We find that there is a large amount of literature that is focusing on the human health effects in the Arctic but there are still research gaps in terms of understanding these compared with those at lower latitudes. We point out the need for filling several of these knowledge gaps to project future health effects of climate change in the Arctic. Conclusions: There is a need for integrated adaptation strategies in the Arctic that fully account for the health impacts and consider indigenous perspectives.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be used as chemical sentinels for the assessment of anthropogenic influences on Arctic environmental change. We present an overview of studies on PCBs in the Arctic and combine these with the findings from ArcRisk—a major European Union-funded project aimed at examining the effects of climate change on the transport of contaminants to and their behaviour of in the Arctic—to provide a case study on the behaviour and impact of PCBs over time in the Arctic. PCBs in the Arctic have shown declining trends in the environment over the last few decades. Atmospheric long-range transport from secondary and primary sources is the major input of PCBs to the Arctic region. Modelling of the atmospheric PCB composition and behaviour showed some increases in environmental concentrations in a warmer Arctic, but the general decline in PCB levels is still the most prominent feature. ‘Within-Arctic’ processing of PCBs will be affected by climate change-related processes such as changing wet deposition. These in turn will influence biological exposure and uptake of PCBs. The pan-Arctic rivers draining large Arctic/sub-Arctic catchments provide a significant source of PCBs to the Arctic Ocean, although changes in hydrology/sediment transport combined with a changing marine environment remain areas of uncertainty with regard to PCB fate. Indirect effects of climate change on human exposure, such as a changing diet will influence and possibly reduce PCB exposure for indigenous peoples. About three-quarters of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and potential health impacts of these diseases are higher where infectious disease surveillance and access to health care and public health services are limited. This is especially the case for remote circumarctic regions, where drivers for endemic, emerging, and re-emerging zoonotic diseases include anthropogenic influences, such as pollution by long-range transport of industrial chemicals, climate change, loss of biodiversity and ecosystem alterations. In addition to these, indirect effects including natural changes in food web dynamics, appearance of invasive species and thawing permafrost also affect the risk of zoonotic disease spill-over. In other words, the Arctic represents a changing world where pollution, loss of biodiversity and habitat, and maritime activity are likely driving forward occurrence of infectious diseases. As a broad international consortium with a wide range of expertise, we here describe a selection of case studies highlighting the importance of a One Health approach to zoonoses in the circumarctic, encompassing human health, animal health, and environmental health aspects. The cases highlight critical gaps in monitoring and current knowledge, focusing on environmental stressors and lifestyle factors, and they are examples of current occurrences in the Arctic that inform on critically needed actions to prepare us for the future. Through these presentations, we recommend measures to enhance awareness and management of existing and emerging zoonoses with epidemic and pandemic potential while also focusing on the impacts of various environmental stressors and lifestyle factors on zoonoses in the Arctic.
