The results were compared to occasional samplings performed in the 1940s, and to the remains found in sediment cores. When monitoring started, the most acid-sensitive of them, Lake Paione Superiore, was acidified, with evident effects in its flora and fauna: benthic diatoms assemblage was shifted towards acidophilous species, and zooplankton lost the dominant species, Arctodiaptomus alpinus. Palaeolimnological studies outlined that lake acidification paralleled the increasing input of long-range transported industrial pollutants, traced by spherical carbonaceous particles. On the contrary, the biota of Lake Paione Inferiore appeared to be mainly affected by fish stocking. In the last twenty years, decrease in acid load from the atmosphere led to an improvement in lake water quality, with an increase in both pH and alkalinity. First signs of biological recovery were identified, such as change in diatom flora and appearance of sensitive species among benthic insects. However, climate change and episodic deposition of Saharan dust were important driving factors controlling lake water chemistry. Further monitoring to assess the effects of climate change and of the increasing load of nitrogen and other pollutants is recommended.

Deep lakes south of the Alps (DSL: Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda) are characterised by varying trophic states and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Some of these lakes experience anoxic conditions in deep waters. We hypothesised that the increase in temperature and water-column stability observed in these lakes during recent decades influenced the deep-water DO concentration. In particular, we tested whether the thermal regime of the lakes and the depth of mixing affect oxygen replenishment during winter-spring turnover. To this aim, we analysed long-term trends and seasonal variability of oxygen levels in the DSL during 1992-2016. We included in our analysis the effects of environmental variables, such as winter air temperature and atmospheric modes of variability. Our results showed a recent decrease in the deep-water oxygen content in lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda and an increase of the extent of anoxic conditions in lakes Lugano and Iseo. Our results suggest that, beside cultural eutrophication, rising environmental pressures, such as global warming, can influence the future trends of the oxygen levels and ecological states of deep lakes.

Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy, with a surface area, maximum depth and volume respectively of 212 km2, 370 m, and 37.5 km3. Politically, the catchment belongs in equal parts to Italy and Switzerland. Lake water is used for tourism, recreational-environmental activities, public and private navigation, professional and sport fishery, hydroelectric production, irrigation and drinking. Long-term studies provide a history of industrial pollution and eutrophication followed by successful re-oligotrophication. Thermal studies show an increase in the water temperature in the 0-30 m layer of about 1.4 °C during the last 45 years. The new physical conditions of the water column, coupled with an increase of recreational uses and the trade in exotic aquarium species, resulted in an increase of cyanobacteria blooms and alien species introduction (Dreissena polymorpha, Corbicula fluminea, Sinanodonta woodiana, Procambarus clarkii and Orconectes limosus). The water European Directive (2000/60/EC) classifies as "lowest quality" typology those lakes which have exotic species.

Eleven stations located at different altitudes in the Italian part of the Lake Maggiore watershed (North-Western Italy) were selected to highlight trends in temperature and precipitation. The data available cover a period of about 30 years for six of the stations and 60-70 years for five sites. Data (maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation amount, snow cover) were collected on a daily basis, and monthly, annual and seasonal values calculated. The results clearly showed increasing trends of temperature at most sites, with different significance for minimum and maximum temperatures and for the different seasons. Examination of the longest data series suggests that it is mainly in the last 30 years that this tendency towards warming has emerged. No significant trend emerged for precipitation amount, apart from a decrease recorded at one site. The analysis of data on a daily basis at four stations showed that precipitation volume has been quite constant in the last 70 years, while the number of rainy days per year has been decreasing, a particularly striking trend over the last 25-30 years. These results lead to the hypothesis that there has been an increasing occurrence of stormy precipitation events in the last decades.

The hydrochemistry of mountain lakes is highly conditioned by the chemical composition of atmospheric deposition and by climate characteristics. Consequently these ecosystems have proved to be sensitive to long-term changes in both factors. Climate warming seems to be particularly pronounced in the Alpine region. A reduction of snow cover in space and time, due to less precipitation and higher temperatures, means a greater exposure of rocks and soils in the watersheds, which enhances weathering processes. In this paper we aim to evaluate the possible effect of these processes on long-term changes in the chemistry of alpine lakes. Recent climate changes affecting the study area were investigated through a data series referring to temperature, precipitation, snow depth and duration at some stations in the Ossola Valley. Chemical data of 35 lakes located in the Ossola and Sesia Valleys (Central Alps) were used. Lakes were sampled both in the late summer of 2000 and 2001 in the framework of two European Projects and the results compared with previous data (1984-87). Two lakes (Boden Superiore and Inferiore, 2343 and 2334 m a.s.l. respectively), located in the northern part of the study area, have been sampled more or less continuously since the late 70s, enabling us to evaluate the trends of the main chemical variables. For lakes lying in catchments with highly soluble rocks, a comparison between the two data sets shows an increase of solute contents in the last few years. This result could be attributed to increased weathering rates due to climate warming.

The hydrochemistry of mountain lakes is highly conditioned by the chemical composition of atmospheric deposition and by climate characteristics. Consequently these ecosystems have proved to be sensitive to long-term changes in both factors. Climate warming seems to be particularly pronounced in the Alpine region. A reduction of snow cover in space and time, due to less precipitation and higher temperatures, means a greater exposure of rocks and soils in the watersheds, which enhances weathering processes. In this paper we aim to evaluate the possible effect of these processes on long-term changes in the chemistry of alpine lakes. Recent climate changes affecting the study area were investigated through a data series referring to temperature, precipitation, snow depth and duration at some stations in the Ossola Valley. Chemical data of 35 lakes located in the Ossola and Sesia Valleys (Central Alps) were used. Lakes were sampled both in the late summer of 2000 and 2001 in the framework of two European Projects and the results compared with previous data (1984-87). Two lakes (Boden Superiore and Inferiore, 2343 and 2334 m a.s.l. respectively), located in the northern part of the study area, have been sampled more or less continuously since the late 70s, enabling us to evaluate the trends of the main chemical variables. For lakes lying in catchments with highly soluble rocks, a comparison between the two data sets shows an increase of solute contents in the last few years. This result could be attributed to increased weathering rates due to climate warming.

The impact of climate change on stratification and mixing patterns has important effects on nutrient availability and plankton dynamics in deep lakes. We demonstrate this in a long-term study of Lake Maggiore, a deep oligomictic lake located in the subalpine lake district in Northern Italy. Studies on physical, chemical and biological features of the lake have been performed continuously since the 1980s. The lake recovered from eutrophication in response to a reduction of catchment nutrient loads and reached a stable oligotrophic status by the end of the 1990s, with average total phosphorus concentrations in the water column around 10 mu g L-1. However, both reactive and total phosphorus have slightly increased since 2010, leading to a shift in the lake trophic state towards mesotrophy. The increase in phosphorus has been limited to the hypolimnetic layers, concentrations being fairly stable or decreasing in the epilimnion. Reactive silica also progressively increased in the hypolimnion, while nitrate and total nitrogen concentrations have steadily decreased in both deep and surface layers, especially in the summer period. These changes were assessed in relation to catchment loads, atmospheric deposition and climate-related variations in stratification and mixing patterns and in nutrient retention. Long-term changes in primary production, represented by chlorophyll levels, and biovolume of the main algal groups were also considered. During the eutrophication period and until the 1990s. in-lake phosphorus concentrations were tightly related to external loads; successively, phosphorus and its vertical distribution up the water column became more controlled by internal processes, in particular by stratification and mixing regime. An increase of thermal stability and a reduced frequency and intensity of deep mixing events has fostered oxygen depletion and phosphorus and silica accumulation in the hypolimnion. Another consequence of reduced deep mixing events has been a reduction in nutrient replenishment of the upper layers at spring mixing. External loads are still the main driver of change for nitrogen compounds: the decrease in the atmospheric load of nitrogen that occurred in the Lake Maggiore area over the last decade, as an effect of reduced nitrogen emissions, has caused decreasing concentration of inorganic nitrogen in the lake. However, the phytoplankton community changes observed might also play a role in nitrogen dynamics, particularly in the nitrate minima observed during summer in recent years.

Based on a selection of 230 papers published during the last 15 years in international journals, the present work aims at evaluating the state of the art of limnological research in the deep southern subalpine lakes (DSL: Garda, Iseo, Como, Lugano and Maggiore). Historically, most of the limnological research was fostered by the need to find solutions to the problems connected with eutrophication and pollution. Many data are available on the thermal structure, algal nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton of the DSL, while other topics still remain more or less constrained to single lakes. Apart from this geographical bias, a number of aspects emerged from this synoptic view. Limnological research is still linked to the concept of scientific monitoring, while experimental studies and modelling are confined to specific niches; the integration of different disciplines is held back by the division of studies on different compartments; integration of studies and synoptic analyses at a macro regional scale have been carried out only for specific research areas. The DSL are increasingly threatened by new pressures (climatic change, excessive proliferation of toxic cyanobacteria, introduction of new species and new micropollutants) and by the interactions among these new and old stressors. In this rapidly changing situation, the paper emphasises the need to define criteria to be used to distinguish research able to produce relevant results and predictive models, which are essential elements for an efficient management of water resources.

The results were compared to occasional samplings performed in the 1940s, and to the remains found in sediment cores. When monitoring started, the most acid-sensitive of them, Lake Paione Superiore, was acidified, with evident effects in its flora and fauna: benthic diatoms assemblage was shifted towards acidophilous species, and zooplankton lost the dominant species, Arctodiaptomus alpinus. Palaeolimnological studies outlined that lake acidification paralleled the increasing input of long-range transported industrial pollutants, traced by spherical carbonaceous particles. On the contrary, the biota of Lake Paione Inferiore appeared to be mainly affected by fish stocking. In the last twenty years, decrease in acid load from the atmosphere led to an improvement in lake water quality, with an increase in both pH and alkalinity. First signs of biological recovery were identified, such as change in diatom flora and appearance of sensitive species among benthic insects. However, climate change and episodic deposition of Saharan dust were important driving factors controlling lake water chemistry. Further monitoring to assess the effects of climate change and of the increasing load of nitrogen and other pollutants is recommended.

Deep lakes south of the Alps (DSL: Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda) are characterised by varying trophic states and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Some of these lakes experience anoxic conditions in deep waters. We hypothesised that the increase in temperature and water-column stability observed in these lakes during recent decades influenced the deep-water DO concentration. In particular, we tested whether the thermal regime of the lakes and the depth of mixing affect oxygen replenishment during winter-spring turnover. To this aim, we analysed long-term trends and seasonal variability of oxygen levels in the DSL during 1992-2016. We included in our analysis the effects of environmental variables, such as winter air temperature and atmospheric modes of variability. Our results showed a recent decrease in the deep-water oxygen content in lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda and an increase of the extent of anoxic conditions in lakes Lugano and Iseo. Our results suggest that, beside cultural eutrophication, rising environmental pressures, such as global warming, can influence the future trends of the oxygen levels and ecological states of deep lakes.

Deep lakes south of the Alps (DSL: Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda) are characterised by varying trophic states and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Some of these lakes experience anoxic conditions in deep waters. We hypothesised that the increase in temperature and water-column stability observed in these lakes during recent decades influenced the deep-water DO concentration. In particular, we tested whether the thermal regime of the lakes and the depth of mixing affect oxygen replenishment during winter-spring turnover. To this aim, we analysed long-term trends and seasonal variability of oxygen levels in the DSL during 1992-2016. We included in our analysis the effects of environmental variables, such as winter air temperature and atmospheric modes of variability. Our results showed a recent decrease in the deep-water oxygen content in lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda and an increase of the extent of anoxic conditions in lakes Lugano and Iseo. Our results suggest that, beside cultural eutrophication, rising environmental pressures, such as global warming, can influence the future trends of the oxygen levels and ecological states of deep lakes.

Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy, with a surface area, maximum depth and volume respectively of 212 km2, 370 m, and 37.5 km3. Politically, the catchment belongs in equal parts to Italy and Switzerland. Lake water is used for tourism, recreational-environmental activities, public and private navigation, professional and sport fishery, hydroelectric production, irrigation and drinking. Long-term studies provide a history of industrial pollution and eutrophication followed by successful re-oligotrophication. Thermal studies show an increase in the water temperature in the 0-30 m layer of about 1.4 °C during the last 45 years. The new physical conditions of the water column, coupled with an increase of recreational uses and the trade in exotic aquarium species, resulted in an increase of cyanobacteria blooms and alien species introduction (Dreissena polymorpha, Corbicula fluminea, Sinanodonta woodiana, Procambarus clarkii and Orconectes limosus). The water European Directive (2000/60/EC) classifies as "lowest quality" typology those lakes which have exotic species.

Eleven stations located at different altitudes in the Italian part of the Lake Maggiore watershed (North-Western Italy) were selected to highlight trends in temperature and precipitation. The data available cover a period of about 30 years for six of the stations and 60-70 years for five sites. Data (maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation amount, snow cover) were collected on a daily basis, and monthly, annual and seasonal values calculated. The results clearly showed increasing trends of temperature at most sites, with different significance for minimum and maximum temperatures and for the different seasons. Examination of the longest data series suggests that it is mainly in the last 30 years that this tendency towards warming has emerged. No significant trend emerged for precipitation amount, apart from a decrease recorded at one site. The analysis of data on a daily basis at four stations showed that precipitation volume has been quite constant in the last 70 years, while the number of rainy days per year has been decreasing, a particularly striking trend over the last 25-30 years. These results lead to the hypothesis that there has been an increasing occurrence of stormy precipitation events in the last decades.

The hydrochemistry of mountain lakes is highly conditioned by the chemical composition of atmospheric deposition and by climate characteristics. Consequently these ecosystems have proved to be sensitive to long-term changes in both factors. Climate warming seems to be particularly pronounced in the Alpine region. A reduction of snow cover in space and time, due to less precipitation and higher temperatures, means a greater exposure of rocks and soils in the watersheds, which enhances weathering processes. In this paper we aim to evaluate the possible effect of these processes on long-term changes in the chemistry of alpine lakes. Recent climate changes affecting the study area were investigated through a data series referring to temperature, precipitation, snow depth and duration at some stations in the Ossola Valley. Chemical data of 35 lakes located in the Ossola and Sesia Valleys (Central Alps) were used. Lakes were sampled both in the late summer of 2000 and 2001 in the framework of two European Projects and the results compared with previous data (1984-87). Two lakes (Boden Superiore and Inferiore, 2343 and 2334 m a.s.l. respectively), located in the northern part of the study area, have been sampled more or less continuously since the late 70s, enabling us to evaluate the trends of the main chemical variables. For lakes lying in catchments with highly soluble rocks, a comparison between the two data sets shows an increase of solute contents in the last few years. This result could be attributed to increased weathering rates due to climate warming.

The impact of climate change on stratification and mixing patterns has important effects on nutrient availability and plankton dynamics in deep lakes. We demonstrate this in a long-term study of Lake Maggiore, a deep oligomictic lake located in the subalpine lake district in Northern Italy. Studies on physical, chemical and biological features of the lake have been performed continuously since the 1980s. The lake recovered from eutrophication in response to a reduction of catchment nutrient loads and reached a stable oligotrophic status by the end of the 1990s, with average total phosphorus concentrations in the water column around 10 mu g L-1. However, both reactive and total phosphorus have slightly increased since 2010, leading to a shift in the lake trophic state towards mesotrophy. The increase in phosphorus has been limited to the hypolimnetic layers, concentrations being fairly stable or decreasing in the epilimnion. Reactive silica also progressively increased in the hypolimnion, while nitrate and total nitrogen concentrations have steadily decreased in both deep and surface layers, especially in the summer period. These changes were assessed in relation to catchment loads, atmospheric deposition and climate-related variations in stratification and mixing patterns and in nutrient retention. Long-term changes in primary production, represented by chlorophyll levels, and biovolume of the main algal groups were also considered. During the eutrophication period and until the 1990s. in-lake phosphorus concentrations were tightly related to external loads; successively, phosphorus and its vertical distribution up the water column became more controlled by internal processes, in particular by stratification and mixing regime. An increase of thermal stability and a reduced frequency and intensity of deep mixing events has fostered oxygen depletion and phosphorus and silica accumulation in the hypolimnion. Another consequence of reduced deep mixing events has been a reduction in nutrient replenishment of the upper layers at spring mixing. External loads are still the main driver of change for nitrogen compounds: the decrease in the atmospheric load of nitrogen that occurred in the Lake Maggiore area over the last decade, as an effect of reduced nitrogen emissions, has caused decreasing concentration of inorganic nitrogen in the lake. However, the phytoplankton community changes observed might also play a role in nitrogen dynamics, particularly in the nitrate minima observed during summer in recent years.

The lake recovered from eutrophication in response to a reduction of catchment nutrient loads and reached a stable oligotrophic status by the end of the 1990s, with average total phosphorus concentrations in the water column around 10 mu g L-1. However, both reactive and total phosphorus have slightly increased since 2010, leading to a shift in the lake trophic state towards mesotrophy. The increase in phosphorus has been limited to the hypolimnetic layers, concentrations being fairly stable or decreasing in the epilimnion. Reactive silica also progressively increased in the hypolimnion, while nitrate and total nitrogen concentrations have steadily decreased in both deep and surface layers, especially in the summer period. These changes were assessed in relation to catchment loads, atmospheric deposition and climate-related variations in stratification and mixing patterns and in nutrient retention. Long-term changes in primary production, represented by chlorophyll levels, and biovolume of the main algal groups were also considered. During the eutrophication period and until the 1990s. in-lake phosphorus concentrations were tightly related to external loads; successively, phosphorus and its vertical distribution up the water column became more controlled by internal processes, in particular by stratification and mixing regime. An increase of thermal stability and a reduced frequency and intensity of deep mixing events has fostered oxygen depletion and phosphorus and silica accumulation in the hypolimnion. Another consequence of reduced deep mixing events has been a reduction in nutrient replenishment of the upper layers at spring mixing. External loads are still the main driver of change for nitrogen compounds: the decrease in the atmospheric load of nitrogen that occurred in the Lake Maggiore area over the last decade, as an effect of reduced nitrogen emissions, has caused decreasing concentration of inorganic nitrogen in the lake. However, the phytoplankton community changes observed might also play a role in nitrogen dynamics, particularly in the nitrate minima observed during summer in recent years.

Based on a selection of 230 papers published during the last 15 years in international journals, the present work aims at evaluating the state of the art of limnological research in the deep southern subalpine lakes (DSL: Garda, Iseo, Como, Lugano and Maggiore). Historically, most of the limnological research was fostered by the need to find solutions to the problems connected with eutrophication and pollution. Many data are available on the thermal structure, algal nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton of the DSL, while other topics still remain more or less constrained to single lakes. Apart from this geographical bias, a number of aspects emerged from this synoptic view. Limnological research is still linked to the concept of scientific monitoring, while experimental studies and modelling are confined to specific niches; the integration of different disciplines is held back by the division of studies on different compartments; integration of studies and synoptic analyses at a macro regional scale have been carried out only for specific research areas. The DSL are increasingly threatened by new pressures (climatic change, excessive proliferation of toxic cyanobacteria, introduction of new species and new micropollutants) and by the interactions among these new and old stressors. In this rapidly changing situation, the paper emphasises the need to define criteria to be used to distinguish research able to produce relevant results and predictive models, which are essential elements for an efficient management of water resources.
