The static dipole polarizability, $_{\rm D}$, in ${}^{208}$Pb has been recently measured with high-resolution via proton inelastic scattering at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). This observable is thought to be intimately connected with the neutron skin thickness, $r_{\rm skin}$, of the same nucleus and, more fundamentally, it is believed to be associated with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The impact of $r_{\rm skin}$ on $_{\rm D}$ in ${}^{208}$Pb is investigated and discussed on the basis of a large and representative set of relativistic and non-relativistic nuclear energy density functionals (EDF). Proceedings of NSD12, Opatija, Croatia, 9-13 July 2012

For spectroscopic applications this framework has to be extended to account for collective correlations related to restoration of symmetries broken by the static mean field, and for fluctuations of collective variables. In this work we compare two approaches to five-dimensional quadrupole dynamics: the collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrations and rotations, and the Interacting Boson Model. The two models are compared in a study of the evolution of non-axial shapes in Pt isotopes. Starting from the binding energy surfaces of $^{192,194,196}$Pt, calculated with a microscopic energy density functional, we analyze the resulting low-energy collective spectra obtained from the collective Hamiltonian, and the corresponding IBM-2 Hamiltonian. The calculated excitation spectra and transition probabilities for the ground-state bands and the $$-vibration bands are compared to the corresponding sequences of experimental states. 10 pages, 4 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev. C

The framework of relativistic energy density functionals has been applied to the description of a variety of nuclear structure phenomena, not only in spherical and deformed nuclei along the valley of -stability, but also in exotic systems with extreme isospin values and close to the particle drip-lines. Dynamical aspects of exotic nuclear structure have been investigated with the relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation. We present results for the evolution of low-lying dipole (pygmy) strength in neutron-rich nuclei, and charged-current neutrino- nucleus cross sections.

It is shown that stable triaxial deformation gives rise to the experimentally observed crossing between the yrast and yrare bands built on the h11/2h11/2 configuration. The collective structure of the yrast band is basically built on the ground-state band of the triaxial core, whereas the collective structure of the yrare band is predominantly based on the band of the core. The mixing between the two bands increases with angular momentum. A constant energy spacing between the two lowest positive-parity bands is predicted in other odd-odd N = 75 nuclei with -soft potential energy surfaces.

The effect of clusterisation in deformed light systems is related to the saturation property of the inter-nucleon interaction. The formation of clusters at low nucleon density is illustrated by expanding the radius of $^{16}$O. A phase diagram shows that the formation of clusters can be interpreted as a hybrid state between the crystal and the liquid phases. In the hybrid cluster phase the confining potential attenuates the delocalization generated by the effective nuclear interaction.

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of a 235U target. Its electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast- timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states of 148Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4/2=B(E2 ; 4+1→2+1)/B(E2 ; 2+1→0+1) ratio indicates that 148Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N=88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z<60.

A set of pseudo-observables in infinite and semi-infinite nuclear matter is used to define a quality measure $^2$ for subsequent analysis. We calculate uncertainties of model parameters and correlation coefficients between parameters, and determine the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix of second derivatives of $^2$ at the minimum. This allows to examine the stability of the density functional in nuclear matter, and to deduce weakly and strongly constrained combinations of parameters. In addition, we also compute uncertainties of observables that are not included in the calculation of $^2$: binding energy of asymmetric nuclear matter, surface thickness of semi-infinite nuclear matter, binding energies and charge radii of finite nuclei. The analysis shows that accurate measurements are necessary to further constrain the symmetry energy parameters and the structure of neutron star crust.

Nucleonic matter displays a quantum liquid structure, but in some cases finite nuclei behave like molecules composed of clusters of protons and neutrons. Clustering is a recurrent feature in light nuclei, from beryllium to nickel. For instance, in $^{12}$C the Hoyle state, crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis, can be described as a nuclear molecule consisting of three alpha-particles. The mechanism of cluster formation, however, has not yet been fully understood. We show that the origin of clustering can be traced back to the depth of the confining nuclear potential. By employing the theoretical framework of energy density functionals that encompasses both cluster and quantum liquid-drop aspects of nuclei, it is shown that the depth of the potential determines the energy spacings between single-nucleon orbitals, the localization of the corresponding wave functions and, therefore, the degree of nucleonic density clustering. Relativistic functionals, in particular, are characterized by deep single-nucleon potentials. When compared to non-relativistic functionals that yield similar ground-state properties (binding energy, deformation, radii), they predict the occurrence of much more pronounced cluster structures. More generally, clustering is considered as a transitional phenomenon between crystalline and quantum liquid phases of fermionic systems. 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publication

The numerical accuracy and stability of the FAM -- RQRPA is tested in a calculation of the monopole response of $^{22}$O. As an illustrative example, the model is applied to a study of the evolution of monopole strength in the chain of Sm isotopes, including the splitting of the giant monopole resonance in axially deformed systems. 11 pager, published in Physical Review C

C.; Lalazissis, G. A.; Marketin, Tomislav; Vretenar, Dario;Recently, a method based on relativistic nuclear energy density functional (EDF) has been employed to study relations between collective excitations in finite nuclei with the nuclear matter symmetry energy, and the phase transition density nt and pressure Pt at the inner edge separating the liquid core and the solid crust of a neutron star. By using the thermodynamic method, relativistic EDF and experimental data on the properties of charge-exchange dipole transitions, isovector giant dipole and quadrupole resonances and pygmy dipole transitions, the neutron star liquid-to-solid phase transition density and pressure are constrained.
