More recently, the research on this realm has grown rapidly, with diverse research activity covering a wide range of application areas. Considering the sustainable development goals, the innovative business models have brought a competitive advantage to improve the sustainability performance of organizations. The concept of the sustainable business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value, in economic, social, cultural, or other contexts, in a sustainable way. The process of sustainable business model construction forms an innovative part of a business strategy. Different industries and businesses have utilized sustainable business models’ concept to satisfy their economic, environmental, and social goals simultaneously. However, the success, popularity, and progress of sustainable business models in different application domains are not clear. To explore this issue, this research provides a comprehensive review of sustainable business models literature in various application areas. Notable sustainable business models are identified and further classified in fourteen unique categories, and in every category, the progress -either failure or success- has been reviewed, and the research gaps are discussed. Taxonomy of the applications includes innovation, management and marketing, entrepreneurship, energy, fashion, healthcare, agri-food, supply chain management, circular economy, developing countries, engineering, construction and real estate, mobility and transportation, and hospitality. The key contribution of this study is that it provides an insight into the state of the art of sustainable business models in various application areas and future research directions. This paper concludes that popularity and the success rate of sustainable business models in all application domains have been increased along with the increasing use of advanced technologies.

However it also has serious impacts on both public health and the environment. In-vehicle feedback systems are a relatively new approach to encouraging driver behavior change for improving fuel efficiency and safety in automotive environments. While many studies claim that the adoption of eco-driving practices, such as eco-driving training programs and in-vehicle feedback to drivers, has the potential to improve fuel efficiency, limited research has integrated safety and eco-driving. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the human factors related theories and practices which will inform the design of an in-vehicle Human Machine Interface (HMI) that could provide real-time driver feedback and consequently improve both fuel efficiency and safety. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state of published literature on in-vehicle systems to identify and evaluate the impact of eco-driving and safety feedback systems. This paper also discusses how these factors may conflict with one another and have a negative effect on road safety, while also exploring possible eco-driving practices that could encourage more sustainable, environmentally-conscious and safe driving behavior. The review revealed a lack of comprehensive theoretical research integrating eco-driving and safe driving, and no current available HMI covering both aspects simultaneously. Furthermore, the review identified that some eco-driving in-vehicle systems may enhance fuel efficiency without compromising safety. The review has identified a range of concepts which can be developed to influence driver acceptance of safety and eco-driving systems within the area of HMI. This can promote new research aimed at enhancing our understanding of the relationship between eco-driving and safety from the human factors viewpoint. This provides a foundation for developing innovative, persuasive and acceptable in-vehicle HMI systems to improve fuel efficiency and road safety.

The vast majority of previous research efforts have focused on driving behaviours that either minimise fuel consumption, or advise on safe driving behaviours. However, a fuel-optimal behaviour is often difficult to implement due to traffic conditions and may lead to unsafe behaviour without proper constraints. While a range of optimisation techniques are currently available, most lack the ability to both consider time and distance dependent constraints necessary for computationally efficient determination of optimal behaviour. In this paper, a methodology to find an ecological and safe (EcoSafe) driving behaviour by formulating and solving an optimal control problem for the minimum fuel driving behaviour while respecting key safety constraints was developed. We first propose a modified distance-based dynamic programming (MDDP) technique that can treat distance and time inequality constraints while optimising. Then we propose a model predictive control (MPC) structure based on MDDP and Pontryagin’s maximum principle by considering inter vehicle time and time-to-collision as hard safety constraints. In contrast to existing approaches, the proposed MPC method does not require ad hoc tuning of constraint penalty weights in the cost function to ensure safe following distances. Simulation results of the proposed method show that the proposed algorithm produces lower vehicle fuel consumption compared to existing approaches when safety constraints are limiting. Thus, the results demonstrate the importance of considering safety constraints within an eco-driving system.

Furthermore, the review identified that some eco-driving in-vehicle systems may enhance fuel efficiency without compromising safety. The review has identified a range of concepts which can be developed to influence driver acceptance of safety and eco-driving systems within the area of HMI. This can promote new research aimed at enhancing our understanding of the relationship between eco-driving and safety from the human factors viewpoint. This provides a foundation for developing innovative, persuasive and acceptable in-vehicle HMI systems to improve fuel efficiency and road safety.

The vast majority of previous research efforts have focused on driving behaviours that either minimise fuel consumption, or advise on safe driving behaviours. However, a fuel-optimal behaviour is often difficult to implement due to traffic conditions and may lead to unsafe behaviour without proper constraints. While a range of optimisation techniques are currently available, most lack the ability to both consider time and distance dependent constraints necessary for computationally efficient determination of optimal behaviour. In this paper, a methodology to find an ecological and safe (EcoSafe) driving behaviour by formulating and solving an optimal control problem for the minimum fuel driving behaviour while respecting key safety constraints was developed. We first propose a modified distance-based dynamic programming (MDDP) technique that can treat distance and time inequality constraints while optimising. Then we propose a model predictive control (MPC) structure based on MDDP and Pontryagin’s maximum principle by considering inter vehicle time and time-to-collision as hard safety constraints. In contrast to existing approaches, the proposed MPC method does not require ad hoc tuning of constraint penalty weights in the cost function to ensure safe following distances. Simulation results of the proposed method show that the proposed algorithm produces lower vehicle fuel consumption compared to existing approaches when safety constraints are limiting. Thus, the results demonstrate the importance of considering safety constraints within an eco-driving system.
