AbstractDespite the importance of high-latitude surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the rapidly changing Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. Here, we harmonize SEB observations across a network of vegetated and glaciated sites at circumpolar scale (1994–2021). Our variance-partitioning analysis identifies vegetation type as an important predictor for SEB-components during Arctic summer (June-August), compared to other SEB-drivers including climate, latitude and permafrost characteristics. Differences among vegetation types can be of similar magnitude as between vegetation and glacier surfaces and are especially high for summer sensible and latent heat fluxes. The timing of SEB-flux summer-regimes (when daily mean values exceed 0 Wm−2) relative to snow-free and -onset dates varies substantially depending on vegetation type, implying vegetation controls on snow-cover and SEB-flux seasonality. Our results indicate complex shifts in surface energy fluxes with land-cover transitions and a lengthening summer season, and highlight the potential for improving future Earth system models via a refined representation of Arctic vegetation types.

Downward-looking radiometers have been installed on July 2016 to collect the upward component of the SW and LW irradiances. Eppley PSP pyranometer and PIR pyrgeometer are located about 100 m West of THAAO on a metal frame at about 2.3 m agl. Electronic levels monitor any possible deviation from the horizontal in the North-South and Est-West directions. See https://www.thuleatmos-it.it/instruments/radiometers for additional details. Radiometers are not ventilated. Data are recorded with a 30 second time step and are used to calculate hourly means and standard deviations. Regular calibrations allow our team to monitor changes of the sensitivity with time. Quality checks are perfomed based on tests recommended for sensors enrolled in the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN).

In-situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. Therefore, we here provide four datasets comprising:1. Harmonized, standardized and aggregated in situ observations of SEB components at 64 vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period 1994-20212. A description of all study sites and associated environmental conditions, including the vegetation types, which correspond to the classification of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019).3. Data generated in a literature synthesis from 358 study sites on vegetation or glacier (>=60°N latitude) covered by 148 publications.4. Metadata, including data contributor information and measurement heights of variables associated with Oehri et al. 2022. Code underlying the dataset and publication is available in a Github repository and can be accessed at: https://github.com/oehrij/ArcticSEBSynthesis

Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset contains metadata information about surface energy budget components measured at 64 tundra and glacier sites >60° N across the Arctic. This information was taken from the open-access repositories FLUXNET, Ameriflux, AON, GC-Net and PROMICE. The contained datasets are associated with the publication vegetation type as an important predictor of the Arctic Summer Land Surface Energy Budget by Oehri et al. 2022, and intended to support research of surface energy budgets and their relationship with environmental conditions, in particular vegetation characteristics across the terrestrial Arctic.

The satellite Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) erythemal daily dose (EDD) product is validated through an inter-comparison with ground-based measurements at 14 ground-based stations distributed worldwide between 43°N and 64°S in 5 different countries of both hemispheres: Argentina, Australia, Italy, Israel, and Spain. The results show that OMI data overestimate ground-based EDD measurements except in stations with high surface albedo (e.g., covered by snow), in agreement with the results reported by previous studies. The average differences between satellite and ground-based data reached a maximum of ~. 25% for all-sky cases. When cloudless conditions are selected, removing intra-daily changes in cloudiness, the agreement improves; although average differences between 10 and 20% still appear for seven low-albedo stations. The influences of ozone and aerosol on the observed differences show opposite trends: viz., high ozone column values result in a decrease whereas high turbidity conditions produce an increase in the differences. A correction factor based on the aerosol absorbing optical thickness was applied to correct for this effect, which is not considered in the OMI algorithm. After applying this correction, the agreement between OMI and ground-based EDD measurements improves and the difference between them falls below 20% for more than 90% of the cases at 8 stations. A dependence on station altitude is also noted for both all-sky and clear-sky cases. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

Observed changes at the global scale. An increase of the annual mean global temperature and changes of other climate parameters have been observed in the last century. The global temperature and the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases are changing at a very fast pace compared to those found in palaeoclimate records. Changes in the Mediterranean. Variations of some climate change indicators can be much larger at the local than at the global scale, and the Mediterranean has been indicated among the regions most sensitive to climate change, also due to the increasing anthropogenic pressure. Model projections for the Mediterranean foresee further warming, droughts, and long-lasting modifications.Regional climate changes impact health and ecosystems, creating new risks, determined not only by weather events, but also by changing exposures and vulnerabilities. These issues, and in particular those regarding occupational safety, have not been sufficiently addressed to date.
