    Electricity has become one of the main driving forces for development, especially in remote areas where the lack of energy is linked to poverty. Traditionally, in these areas power is supplied by grid extension projects, which are expensive, or stand-alone systems based on fossil fuels. An actual alternative to these solutions is community micro-grid projects based on distributed renewable energy sources. However, these solutions need to introduce a holistic approach in order to be successfully implemented in real cases. The main purpose of this research work is the definition and development of a comprehensive methodology to encourage the use of decentralized renewable power systems to provide power supply to non-electrified areas. The methodology follows a top-down approach. Its main novelty is that it interlinks a macro and micro analysis dimension, considering not only the energy context of the country where the area under study is located and its development towards a sustainable scenario; but also the potential of renewable power generation, the demand side management opportunities and the socio-economic aspects involved in the final decision on what renewable energy solution would be the most appropriate for the considered location. The implementation of this methodology provides isolated areas a tool for sustainable energy development based on an environmentally friendly and socially participatory approach. Results of implementing the methodology in a case study showed the importance of introducing a holistic approach in supplying power energy to isolated areas, stating the need for involving all the different stakeholders in the decision-making process. Despite final raking on sustainable power supply solutions may vary from one area to another, the implementation of the methodology follows the same procedure, which makes it an inestimable tool for governments, private investors and local communities.

    Rooftop gardens ona building have proved to be a good way to improve its storm water management, but many other benefits can be obtained from the installation of these systems, such as reduction of energy consumption, decrease of the heat stress, abatement on CO2 emissions, etc. In this paper, the effect from the presence of these rooftop gardens on abuilding’s energy consumption has been investigated by experimental campaigns using a green roof ona public building in a Mediterranean location in Spain. The obtained results demonstrate a substantial improvement by the installation of the green roof onthe building’s cooling energy demand for a standard summer day, in the order of 30%, and a reduction, about 15%, in the heating energy demand for a winter day. Thus, given the longer duration of the summer conditions along the year, a noticeable reduction on energy demand could be obtained. Simulation analysis, using commercial software TRNSYS code, previously calibrated using experimental data for typical summer and winter days, allows for the extrapolation to the entire year of these results deducing noticeable improvement in energy efficiency, in the order of 19%, but with an increase of 6% in the peak power during the winter period.

    The main objective is to propose a calculation method for assessing the benefits of individual domestic prosumers in self-consumption and economic savings when managing their own energy resources. The paper applies the demand-side management concept in the residential sector from the individual domestic perspective so that customers can understand the value of their own sustainable energy resources, conducting self-generation and demand management. The novelty lies in allowing the prosumer to manage their own energy resources to their benefit at a reasonable cost, instead of participating in automated large residential demand-side-management programmes that respond to the means of the grid system operator or other energy service companies, such as aggregators. A methodology for calculating the self-consumption rate and the economic benefit for the consumer is proposed, including three different cases: consumer demand is higher than self-generation, and consumer demand is equal to self-generation, and consumer demand is lower than self-generation. The methodology is validated with actual data from a household in Valencia (Spain) during a complete year, obtaining an average reduction in the annual electricity bill of 70% and a demand coverage with the self-renewable system reaching values of 80% throughout the year. The significance of this methodology goes beyond the economic revenue of the individual consumer; it also aims to guide consumers towards efficient practices in the use of their available energy resources and raise awareness on their energy behaviour.

    Well-known industrial practice efficiency improvement techniques, such as reactive compensation, load balancing, and harmonic filtering, are used in this paper to reduce energy losses in distribution transformers, and therefore, to decrease carbon dioxide emissions and economic costs in the operation of these transformers. Load balancing is carried out by monitoring the values of the angles of the active and reactive components of the vector unbalanced power. Likewise, the application of Order 3/2020 of the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission is described, in detail, for the calculation of the economic costs derived from the transformer energy losses caused by the load currents and the penalties due to transformer energy deliveries with capacitive power factors. Finally, all these improvement techniques are applied to determine savings in carbon dioxide emissions and costs on the electricity bill of an actual 1000 kVA distribution transformer that supplies a commercial and night-entertainment area. The results of this application case reveal that cost reductions due to energy loss savings are modest, but the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and the savings in penalties for capacitive reactive supplies are significant.

    Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems’ view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.

    The performance of a biomass gasification plant for power production has been evaluated using a developed methodology based on geographical information systems to evaluate and quantify the available biomass resources and a simulation software to analyze the power production based on the data obtained from the methodology. An economic and environmental analysis has also been performed based on the simulation and methodology data. This analysis has been performed for twelve districts of the Valencian province in Spain and the main results and conclusions are presented in this paper.

    Building decarbonization strategy with Distributed renewable energy sources (DRES) is applied and extended worldwide for its climate change mitigation benefits, however, it generates debate regarding equity in sharing electric system operation costs. To analyze DRES effects on equity, it is conducted a case study, in which same residential consumer is evaluated in three different markets (Spain, Mexico, Colombia). We analyze not only electrical system technical variables, but we also include society’s economic, social, technological, and environmental characteristics. Next, energy, economic, and environmental benefits are obtained in each the three case studies, analyzing the impact of using DERS on equity to recover electric system operating costs. We also evaluate whether tariff mechanisms are equitable to motivate all consumers participation, as well as whether all consumers have equal opportunity for using DERS. We conclude that tariff mechanisms in Mexico and Colombia lead to inequity to recover market operating costs, favoring large consumers with high incomes. Furthermore, tariff mechanisms discourage the use of DERS by small and medium consumers due to economic, social, and technological aspects. In Spain, inequity arises due to increased difficulty for some consumers to use DERS, i.e., consumers in apartment buildings.

    An indirect procedure for real-time monitoring the neutral conductor condition in three-phase distribution networks, based on watching over the growth of a novel parameter (∆τ), has been described in this paper. The parameter ∆τ has been defined as the relationship between the neutral-displacement power and Buchholz’s apparent power measured at the fundamental frequency in the loads of the distribution networks for any condition of the neutral conductor and in its nominal conditions. The effectiveness of this procedure has been compared with other traditional indirect procedures, such as the surveillance of the RMS values of the line-to-neutral load voltages or their zero-sequence component. The practical application on a real distribution network reveals that the growth of the parameter ∆τ in the early stages of the breaking process of the neutral conductor follows a straight line whose equation is known for each length and section of that conductor, regardless of the loads and the voltage regulation of the transformer of the distribution network. This characteristic of the ∆τ parameter shows that the proposed procedure is suitable for monitoring neutral conductor deterioration and can be used for preventive maintenance of distribution networks.

    The current energy model requires a transformation based on a sustainable model that is accessible to all, focused on the needs of citizens and committed to climate change. Moreover, the rising cost of non-renewable energy sources, and the growing presence of distributed renewable generation, has a major impact on the electricity sector, creating the need to develop mechanisms to help manage energy demand in order to converge towards an efficient, emission-free electricity system that is responsible for the environment and future generations. The main motivation is the recent change in the regulation of electricity tariff systems and the introduction of time discriminations in the residential sector. Based on the previous need and supported by a survey to find out society's predisposition and sensitivity to demand management, this paper presents the methodology developed as an active demand-side management mechanism for residential consumers, considering their load shifting priorities and prioritising the use of renewable energy if possible, reducing grid energy consumption. In a nutshell, the use of a tool capable of helping consumers to regulate their energy consumption, analyse their consumption pattern and plan their domestic loads to obtain the lowest energy and economic impact is developed.     [EN] This paper establishes a brief review through the existing literature of what is considered a ¿good practice¿ in general: definitions and most relevant characteristics, and limitations in the scope of the member countries of the European Un- ion. Subsequently, good practices application to environmental aspects is considered. Particularly, their advantages of the in the construction and demolition waste management field based on this specific context and current situation. Finally, the paper describes the methodology followed using an example, expressing how to collect, compare and evaluate these good practices. All these aspects are based on the experience developed in the research carried out within the European Interreg CONDEREFF project.     Electricity has become one of the main driving forces for development, especially in remote areas where the lack of energy is linked to poverty. Traditionally, in these areas power is supplied by grid extension projects, which are expensive, or stand-alone systems based on fossil fuels. An actual alternative to these solutions is community micro-grid projects based on distributed renewable energy sources. However, these solutions need to introduce a holistic approach in order to be successfully implemented in real cases. The main purpose of this research work is the definition and development of a comprehensive methodology to encourage the use of decentralized renewable power systems to provide power supply to non-electrified areas. The methodology follows a top-down approach. Its main novelty is that it interlinks a macro and micro analysis dimension, considering not only the energy context of the country where the area under study is located and its development towards a sustainable scenario; but also the potential of renewable power generation, the demand side management opportunities and the socio-economic aspects involved in the final decision on what renewable energy solution would be the most appropriate for the considered location. The implementation of this methodology provides isolated areas a tool for sustainable energy development based on an environmentally friendly and socially participatory approach. Results of implementing the methodology in a case study showed the importance of introducing a holistic approach in supplying power energy to isolated areas, stating the need for involving all the different stakeholders in the decision-making process. Despite final raking on sustainable power supply solutions may vary from one area to another, the implementation of the methodology follows the same procedure, which makes it an inestimable tool for governments, private investors and local communities.

    Rooftop gardens ona building have proved to be a good way to improve its storm water management, but many other benefits can be obtained from the installation of these systems, such as reduction of energy consumption, decrease of the heat stress, abatement on CO2 emissions, etc. In this paper, the effect from the presence of these rooftop gardens on abuilding’s energy consumption has been investigated by experimental campaigns using a green roof ona public building in a Mediterranean location in Spain. The obtained results demonstrate a substantial improvement by the installation of the green roof onthe building’s cooling energy demand for a standard summer day, in the order of 30%, and a reduction, about 15%, in the heating energy demand for a winter day. Thus, given the longer duration of the summer conditions along the year, a noticeable reduction on energy demand could be obtained. Simulation analysis, using commercial software TRNSYS code, previously calibrated using experimental data for typical summer and winter days, allows for the extrapolation to the entire year of these results deducing noticeable improvement in energy efficiency, in the order of 19%, but with an increase of 6% in the peak power during the winter period.

    The main objective is to propose a calculation method for assessing the benefits of individual domestic prosumers in self-consumption and economic savings when managing their own energy resources. The paper applies the demand-side management concept in the residential sector from the individual domestic perspective so that customers can understand the value of their own sustainable energy resources, conducting self-generation and demand management. The novelty lies in allowing the prosumer to manage their own energy resources to their benefit at a reasonable cost, instead of participating in automated large residential demand-side-management programmes that respond to the means of the grid system operator or other energy service companies, such as aggregators. A methodology for calculating the self-consumption rate and the economic benefit for the consumer is proposed, including three different cases: consumer demand is higher than self-generation, and consumer demand is equal to self-generation, and consumer demand is lower than self-generation. The methodology is validated with actual data from a household in Valencia (Spain) during a complete year, obtaining an average reduction in the annual electricity bill of 70% and a demand coverage with the self-renewable system reaching values of 80% throughout the year. The significance of this methodology goes beyond the economic revenue of the individual consumer; it also aims to guide consumers towards efficient practices in the use of their available energy resources and raise awareness on their energy behaviour.

    Well-known industrial practice efficiency improvement techniques, such as reactive compensation, load balancing, and harmonic filtering, are used in this paper to reduce energy losses in distribution transformers, and therefore, to decrease carbon dioxide emissions and economic costs in the operation of these transformers. Load balancing is carried out by monitoring the values of the angles of the active and reactive components of the vector unbalanced power. Likewise, the application of Order 3/2020 of the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission is described, in detail, for the calculation of the economic costs derived from the transformer energy losses caused by the load currents and the penalties due to transformer energy deliveries with capacitive power factors. Finally, all these improvement techniques are applied to determine savings in carbon dioxide emissions and costs on the electricity bill of an actual 1000 kVA distribution transformer that supplies a commercial and night-entertainment area. The results of this application case reveal that cost reductions due to energy loss savings are modest, but the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and the savings in penalties for capacitive reactive supplies are significant.

    Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems’ view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.

    The performance of a biomass gasification plant for power production has been evaluated using a developed methodology based on geographical information systems to evaluate and quantify the available biomass resources and a simulation software to analyze the power production based on the data obtained from the methodology. An economic and environmental analysis has also been performed based on the simulation and methodology data. This analysis has been performed for twelve districts of the Valencian province in Spain and the main results and conclusions are presented in this paper.

    Building decarbonization strategy with Distributed renewable energy sources (DRES) is applied and extended worldwide for its climate change mitigation benefits, however, it generates debate regarding equity in sharing electric system operation costs. To analyze DRES effects on equity, it is conducted a case study, in which same residential consumer is evaluated in three different markets (Spain, Mexico, Colombia). We analyze not only electrical system technical variables, but we also include society’s economic, social, technological, and environmental characteristics. Next, energy, economic, and environmental benefits are obtained in each the three case studies, analyzing the impact of using DERS on equity to recover electric system operating costs. We also evaluate whether tariff mechanisms are equitable to motivate all consumers participation, as well as whether all consumers have equal opportunity for using DERS. We conclude that tariff mechanisms in Mexico and Colombia lead to inequity to recover market operating costs, favoring large consumers with high incomes. Furthermore, tariff mechanisms discourage the use of DERS by small and medium consumers due to economic, social, and technological aspects. In Spain, inequity arises due to increased difficulty for some consumers to use DERS, i.e., consumers in apartment buildings.

    An indirect procedure for real-time monitoring the neutral conductor condition in three-phase distribution networks, based on watching over the growth of a novel parameter (∆τ), has been described in this paper. The parameter ∆τ has been defined as the relationship between the neutral-displacement power and Buchholz’s apparent power measured at the fundamental frequency in the loads of the distribution networks for any condition of the neutral conductor and in its nominal conditions. The effectiveness of this procedure has been compared with other traditional indirect procedures, such as the surveillance of the RMS values of the line-to-neutral load voltages or their zero-sequence component. The practical application on a real distribution network reveals that the growth of the parameter ∆τ in the early stages of the breaking process of the neutral conductor follows a straight line whose equation is known for each length and section of that conductor, regardless of the loads and the voltage regulation of the transformer of the distribution network. This characteristic of the ∆τ parameter shows that the proposed procedure is suitable for monitoring neutral conductor deterioration and can be used for preventive maintenance of distribution networks.

    The current energy model requires a transformation based on a sustainable model that is accessible to all, focused on the needs of citizens and committed to climate change. Moreover, the rising cost of non-renewable energy sources, and the growing presence of distributed renewable generation, has a major impact on the electricity sector, creating the need to develop mechanisms to help manage energy demand in order to converge towards an efficient, emission-free electricity system that is responsible for the environment and future generations. The main motivation is the recent change in the regulation of electricity tariff systems and the introduction of time discriminations in the residential sector. Based on the previous need and supported by a survey to find out society's predisposition and sensitivity to demand management, this paper presents the methodology developed as an active demand-side management mechanism for residential consumers, considering their load shifting priorities and prioritising the use of renewable energy if possible, reducing grid energy consumption. In a nutshell, the use of a tool capable of helping consumers to regulate their energy consumption, analyse their consumption pattern and plan their domestic loads to obtain the lowest energy and economic impact is developed.     [EN] This paper establishes a brief review through the existing literature of what is considered a ¿good practice¿ in general: definitions and most relevant characteristics, and limitations in the scope of the member countries of the European Un- ion. Subsequently, good practices application to environmental aspects is considered. Particularly, their advantages of the in the construction and demolition waste management field based on this specific context and current situation. Finally, the paper describes the methodology followed using an example, expressing how to collect, compare and evaluate these good practices. All these aspects are based on the experience developed in the research carried out within the European Interreg CONDEREFF project.
