AbstractEarthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Earthworm distribution in global soils Earthworms are key components of soil ecological communities, performing vital functions in decomposition and nutrient cycling through ecosystems. Using data from more than 7000 sites, Phillips et al. developed global maps of the distribution of earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass (see the Perspective by Fierer). The patterns differ from those typically found in aboveground taxa; there are peaks of diversity and abundance in the mid-latitude regions and peaks of biomass in the tropics. Climate variables strongly influence these patterns, and changes are likely to have cascading effects on other soil organisms and wider ecosystem functions. Such research can help to address current knowledge gaps and support the development of legislation and conservation measures aimed at preserving soil biodiversity in the future. Earthworms, one of the most important group of soil animals, show patchy horizontal distribution in response to spatial heterogeneity in soil physico-chemical parameters, food availability and biological interactions at various scales. The aim of this study was to explore whether the spatial and temporal variability and co-occurrence probability of earthworm species and ecological categories (epigeic, endogeic and anecic) can be characterized by exploiting habitat micro- topography and insolation. Field research was carried out in spring and summer at seven locations using a regular grid of 49 sampling points with 5 m inter-sample distance over an altitudinal gradient. The results of Geary's C and Moran's I indices, as well as the semivariograms calculated for each species, season and location confirmed a patchy spatial distribution. The range of semivariograms varied from 3.2 m to 32.8 m in spring, and from 0.3 m to 32.8 m in summer. Overall (all locations and both seasons), the mean range was similar for adult (8.4 m) and juvenile (9.2 m) earthworms. In spring, epigeic species had a larger range than endogeic species. Abundances of juvenile earthworms were negatively correlated with microtopographic elevation in spring (at most locations) and in summer (at all locations). The relationship between adult earthworms and microtopographic elevation could not be interpreted generally within season. Additionally, correlations between earthworm abundance and average monthly insolation were weak. Pairwise analysis of species co-occurrence revealed a random pattern for most species. In the analysis of co-occurrence of ecological categories, endogeics and epigeics had more positive probabilities than other pairs. The obtained results could be useable in soil biodiversity assessments, or creation of monitoring protocols.

Many soil fauna groups directly or indirectly participate in litter consumption. However, the quantity of litter consumed by major faunal groups across biomes remains unknown. To estimate this quantity, we reviewed > 1000 observations from 70 studies that determined the biomass of soil fauna across various biomes and 200 observations from 44 studies on litter consumption by soil fauna. To compare litter consumption with annual litterfall, we analyzed 692 observations from 24 litterfall studies and 183 observations from 28 litter stock studies. The biomass of faunal groups was highest in temperate grasslands and then decreased in the following order: boreal forest > temperate forest > tropical grassland > tundra > tropical forest > Mediterranean ecosystems > desert and semidesert. Tropical grasslands, desert biomes, and Mediterranean ecosystems were dominated by termites. Temperate grasslands were dominated by omnivores, while temperate forests were dominated by earthworms. On average, estimated litter consumption (relative to total litter input) ranged from a low of 14.9% in deserts to a high of 100.4% in temperate grassland. Litter consumption by soil fauna was greater in grasslands than in forests. This is the first study to estimate the effect of different soil fauna groups on litter consumption and related processes at global scale.

Hackenberger; Goran Palijan; Stella Glavić; Marija Trkmić;Agricultural biomass has great bioenergy potential due to its availability, and it is a carbon-free energy source. During biomass incineration, biomass ash is formed, which is still considered as a waste without proper disposal and management solutions. Various biomass ash utilization options were investigated, mainly concerning engineering issues (the mechanical characterization of newly produced building materials or products), and there is a lack of knowledge of environmental issues arising from this “waste” material utilization in civil engineering practice. The main aim of this research is discussion of a different agricultural biomass characteristics as a fuel, the impact of agricultural biomass ashes (ABA) on the mechanical properties of stabilized soil with a particular emphasis on the environmental impacts within this kind of waste management. The results of this study indicate improved geotechnical characteristics of low-plasticity clay stabilized by lime/ABA binder. In addition to mechanical characterization for materials embedded in road embankments and subgrades, appropriate environmental risk assessment needs to be performed, and the results of this study indicate that the amount of ABAs added to the soil for roadworks should not have adverse effects on the soil fauna in the surrounding environment.

AbstractEarthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Earthworm distribution in global soils Earthworms are key components of soil ecological communities, performing vital functions in decomposition and nutrient cycling through ecosystems. Using data from more than 7000 sites, Phillips et al. developed global maps of the distribution of earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass (see the Perspective by Fierer). The patterns differ from those typically found in aboveground taxa; there are peaks of diversity and abundance in the mid-latitude regions and peaks of biomass in the tropics. Climate variables strongly influence these patterns, and changes are likely to have cascading effects on other soil organisms and wider ecosystem functions. Such research can help to address current knowledge gaps and support the development of legislation and conservation measures aimed at preserving soil biodiversity in the future. Earthworms, one of the most important group of soil animals, show patchy horizontal distribution in response to spatial heterogeneity in soil physico-chemical parameters, food availability and biological interactions at various scales. The aim of this study was to explore whether the spatial and temporal variability and co-occurrence probability of earthworm species and ecological categories (epigeic, endogeic and anecic) can be characterized by exploiting habitat micro- topography and insolation. Field research was carried out in spring and summer at seven locations using a regular grid of 49 sampling points with 5 m inter-sample distance over an altitudinal gradient. The results of Geary's C and Moran's I indices, as well as the semivariograms calculated for each species, season and location confirmed a patchy spatial distribution. The range of semivariograms varied from 3.2 m to 32.8 m in spring, and from 0.3 m to 32.8 m in summer. Overall (all locations and both seasons), the mean range was similar for adult (8.4 m) and juvenile (9.2 m) earthworms. In spring, epigeic species had a larger range than endogeic species. Abundances of juvenile earthworms were negatively correlated with microtopographic elevation in spring (at most locations) and in summer (at all locations). The relationship between adult earthworms and microtopographic elevation could not be interpreted generally within season. Additionally, correlations between earthworm abundance and average monthly insolation were weak. Pairwise analysis of species co-occurrence revealed a random pattern for most species. In the analysis of co-occurrence of ecological categories, endogeics and epigeics had more positive probabilities than other pairs. The obtained results could be useable in soil biodiversity assessments, or creation of monitoring protocols.

Many soil fauna groups directly or indirectly participate in litter consumption. However, the quantity of litter consumed by major faunal groups across biomes remains unknown. To estimate this quantity, we reviewed > 1000 observations from 70 studies that determined the biomass of soil fauna across various biomes and 200 observations from 44 studies on litter consumption by soil fauna. To compare litter consumption with annual litterfall, we analyzed 692 observations from 24 litterfall studies and 183 observations from 28 litter stock studies. The biomass of faunal groups was highest in temperate grasslands and then decreased in the following order: boreal forest > temperate forest > tropical grassland > tundra > tropical forest > Mediterranean ecosystems > desert and semidesert. Tropical grasslands, desert biomes, and Mediterranean ecosystems were dominated by termites. Temperate grasslands were dominated by omnivores, while temperate forests were dominated by earthworms. On average, estimated litter consumption (relative to total litter input) ranged from a low of 14.9% in deserts to a high of 100.4% in temperate grassland. Litter consumption by soil fauna was greater in grasslands than in forests. This is the first study to estimate the effect of different soil fauna groups on litter consumption and related processes at global scale.

Hackenberger; Goran Palijan; Stella Glavić; Marija Trkmić;Agricultural biomass has great bioenergy potential due to its availability, and it is a carbon-free energy source. During biomass incineration, biomass ash is formed, which is still considered as a waste without proper disposal and management solutions. Various biomass ash utilization options were investigated, mainly concerning engineering issues (the mechanical characterization of newly produced building materials or products), and there is a lack of knowledge of environmental issues arising from this “waste” material utilization in civil engineering practice. The main aim of this research is discussion of a different agricultural biomass characteristics as a fuel, the impact of agricultural biomass ashes (ABA) on the mechanical properties of stabilized soil with a particular emphasis on the environmental impacts within this kind of waste management. The results of this study indicate improved geotechnical characteristics of low-plasticity clay stabilized by lime/ABA binder. In addition to mechanical characterization for materials embedded in road embankments and subgrades, appropriate environmental risk assessment needs to be performed, and the results of this study indicate that the amount of ABAs added to the soil for roadworks should not have adverse effects on the soil fauna in the surrounding environment.
