Urban canopy models are essential tools for forecasting weather and air quality in cities. However, they require many surface parameters, which are uncertain and can reduce model performance if inappropriately prescribed. Here, we evaluate the model sensitivity of the single‐layer urban canopy model (SLUCM) in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to surface parameters in two different configurations, one coupled to the overlying atmosphere (on‐line) in a 1D configuration and one without coupling (off‐line). A two‐day summertime period in London is used as a case study, with clear skies and low wind speeds. Our sensitivity tests indicate that the SLUCM reacts differently when coupled to the atmosphere. For certain surface parameters, atmospheric feedback effects can outweigh the variations caused by surface parameter settings. Hence, in order to fully understand the model sensitivity, atmospheric feedback should be considered.

The approach is based on the forcing by the use of LandSAT8 data of a coupled radiative transfer model DART (Direct Anisotropic Radiative Transfer) (www.cesbio.upstlse.fr/dart) with an energy balance module. LandSAT8 visible remote sensing data is used to better parametrize the albedo of the urban canopy and thermal remote sensing data is used to enhance the anthropogenic component in the coupled model. This work is conducted in the frame of the H2020 project URBANFLUXES, which aim is to improve the efficiency of remote-sensing data usage for the determination of the anthropogenic heat fluxes in urban canopies [5].

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Project deliverable , Other literature type 2024Publisher:Zenodo Löhnert, Ulrich; Kotthaus, Simone; Cimini, Domenico; Diémoz, Henri; Gandoin, Rémi; Nemuc, Anca; Ravnik, Luka; Ribaud, Jean-François; Toanca, Flori; Körmöndi, Barnabás;Recent, significant advances in measurement technology and algorithm developments have made products from ground-based remote sensing profile observations increasingly interesting for stakeholders. Provided standardised operations, careful processing and adequate quality control (according to guidelines formulated by WG 3 and WG 4 of PROBE), these profiling products contain unprecedented spatial (horizontal and vertical) and temporal detail of variables characterising the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL). Sensor networks and retrievals are typically optimised for specific, individual applications, however as shown by WG2 of PROBE, synergistic procedures combining complementary sensors help to maximise exploitation of these rich data for a number of different purposes. While network observations from ground-based profilers are being recognised as valuable data sources by different communities, the measurements are still far from being exploited at their full potential. Here, we highlight first applications of ground-based remote sensing ABL observations in emerging network structures. Our selection of applications is by no means providing a full picture of all impacts that ABL observations may have but rather showcases a number of representative examples. While some are established applications that are already integrated in operational procedures, others are still more experimental or even present a prospect for future developments. The showcases will be of interest to a wide range of stakeholders, including academic research in many fields as well as national meteorological and hydrological services, environmental agencies, space agencies, renewable energy suppliers, urban planners and the safety and transportation sector among others.

R.; Xu, L.; Young, D E; Zotter, P.; Prevot, A S H;Abstract Air quality and heat are strong health drivers, and their accurate assessment and forecast are important in densely populated urban areas. However, the sources and processes leading to high concentrations of main pollutants, such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and fine and coarse particulate matter, in complex urban areas are not fully understood, limiting our ability to forecast air quality accurately. This paper introduces the Clean Air for London (ClearfLo; www.clearflo.ac.uk) project’s interdisciplinary approach to investigate the processes leading to poor air quality and elevated temperatures. Within ClearfLo, a large multi-institutional project funded by the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), integrated measurements of meteorology and gaseous, and particulate composition/loading within the atmosphere of London, United Kingdom, were undertaken to understand the processes underlying poor air quality. Long-term measurement infrastructure installed at multiple levels (street and elevated), and at urban background, curbside, and rural locations were complemented with high-resolution numerical atmospheric simulations. Combining these (measurement–modeling) enhances understanding of seasonal variations in meteorology and composition together with the controlling processes. Two intensive observation periods (winter 2012 and the Summer Olympics of 2012) focus upon the vertical structure and evolution of the urban boundary layer; chemical controls on nitrogen dioxide and ozone production—in particular, the role of volatile organic compounds; and processes controlling the evolution, size, distribution, and composition of particulate matter. The paper shows that mixing heights are deeper over London than in the rural surroundings and that the seasonality of the urban boundary layer evolution controls when concentrations peak. The composition also reflects the seasonality of sources such as domestic burning and biogenic emissions.

S. B. Grimmond; Simone Kotthaus; Simone Kotthaus; Ting Sun; Ting Sun; Zhiqiu Gao; Helen C. Ward; Guangheng Ni; Dan Li;When the urban heat island (UHI) effect coincides with a heat wave (HW), thermal comfort conditions in cities are exacerbated. Understanding the surface energy balance (SEB) responses to HWs is critical for improving predictions of the synergies between UHIs and HWs. This study evaluates observed SEB characteristics in four cities (Beijing, Łódź, London and Swindon), along with their ambient meteorological conditions, for both HW and background summer climate (BC) scenarios. Using the Analytical Objective Hysteresis Model (AnOHM), particular emphasis is on the heat storage. The results demonstrate that in London and Swindon not only the amount of daytime heat storage but also its portion relative to the net all-wave radiation increase under HWs. Results further demonstrate that such increases are strongly tied to lower wind speeds. The effects of different UHI mitigation measures on heat storage are assessed using AnOHM. Results reveal that using reflective materials and maintaining higher soil moisture availability may offset the adverse effects of increased heat storage.

C.; Visser, S.; Whalley, L. K.; Williams, L.

C.; Visser, S.; Whalley, L. K.; Williams, L.
