Wind turbines, because of their height and localization, are frequently subject to direct lightning strikes. Thus, the investigation on the performance of their grounding system is of paramount interest for the prediction of the potential threats either for people working in (or animals passing through) the wind farm area and for the power and control units installed in close proximity of the turbine towers. In this paper,we perform a comprensive study of the transient behavior of the earthing systems of wind turbines. The analysis is conducted in the frequency domain and an hybrid approach, based on circuit theory and Method of Moments, is adopted to fully account for resistive, inductive and capacitive couplings between elements of the ground system. The actual transient behavior is obtained by means of an Inverse Fourier Transform. The results, computed considering a typical wind turbine grounding system configuration, provide more insight on the nature of the early-time transient response of grounding systems and allow to draw up useful design guidelines.

The piezoelectric performance of ultra-strength ZnO nanowires (NWs) depends on the subtle interplay between electrical and mechanical size-effects. "Size-dependent" modeling of compressed NWs illustrates why experimentally observed mechanical stiffening can indeed collide with electrical size-effects when the size shrinks, thereby lowering the actual piezoelectric function from bulk estimates. "Smaller" is not necessarily "better" in nanotechnology.

Fast-front transients play an important role in the insulation design of any power system. When a stroke hits the shield wire or the tower of high-voltage overhead power lines, flashover may occur either along the span or across tower insulators, depending on the relevant voltages and insulation strength. As a result, backflashover may take place from the tower structure to the phase conductor whenever a huge impulse current flows along the tower towards considerably high footing impedances. For these reasons, tower modeling for transients studies is an important step in the insulation design, and also for lower voltage applications, where indirect lightning effects may play a predominant role. However, after decades of research on tower modeling, starting from the 1930s with the first model proposed by Jordan, no consensus has been reached neither on a widely accepted tower model nor on the quantitative effect of the tower models on insulation design. Moreover, the fundamental mechanisms at the base of the transient response of towers and the definition of some fundamental parameters have not been totally clarified yet. The aim of this review is to present the available tower models developed through the years in the power community, focussing mainly on lumped/distributed circuit models, and to help the reader to obtain a deeper understanding of them.

Grounding systems (GSs) must be tested periodically in order to maintain the touch voltage (TV) and step voltage (SV) below a safe value in all of the zones of the installation. Measurements of the ground resistance and of the TV and SV are typically done by the fall-of-potential (FoP) method, locating the auxiliary current electrode at remote distance to test the effective behavior of the GS. In urban areas, it could be very complicated or impossible to install the auxiliary current electrode as required, not having area around with sufficient accessibility. At this aim, this paper describes a methodology of using multiple current electrodes at short distances, modifying the classic FoP practice, so that the measurements of TV and SV are always conservative. The adequacy of a GS is verified if the values of the TV and SV, tested inside and in the vicinity of the GS, are below the permissible limits, regardless if they are true or conservatively increased. Thus, the measured TV and SV by the suggested method, always conservative, allow verifying the adequacy of GSs, in the cases where it is impossible to locate the remote auxiliary electrode.

In high-voltage transmission lines, the continuity of shield wires is often broken to reduce losses. The accurate simulation of the effects of this practice on power line communications in multiconductor transmission lines is performed in order to put in evidence the relevant channel features and the consequences on the radiated electromagnetic fields.

Standards describing the test procedures recommended to investigate the shielding effectiveness of enclosures have two major issues: they generally prescribe the assessment of the electromagnetic field of empty cavities, and they do not deal with very small enclosures. However, the dimensions of some very common shielded apparatus are smaller than those considered in the standards and the electromagnetic field distribution inside the shielded structure is strongly affected by the enclosure content. In this paper, both issues have been investigated for two components commonly used in medium voltage/low voltage (MV/LV) substations: a mini personal computer used to store, process, and transmit relevant data on the status of the electric network, with these aspects being essential in smart grids, and an electronic relay which is ubiquitous in MV/LV substations. Both components are partially contained in a metallic enclosure which provides a certain amount of electromagnetic shielding against external interferences. It is observed that an electrostatic discharge may cause a failure and/or a loss of data, requiring an improvement of shielding characteristics or a wise choice of the positions where the most sensitive devices are installed inside the enclosure. Since the dimensions of very small enclosures, fully occupied by their internal components, do not allow for the insertion of sensors inside the protected volume, numerical analysis is considered as the only way for the appraisal of the effects induced by a typical source of interference, such as an electrostatic discharge.

Research on corona discharge, shared by physics, chemistry and electrical engineering, has not arrested yet. As a dissipative process, the development of corona increases the resistive losses of transmission lines and enhances the line capacitance locally. Introducing additional losses and propagation delay, along the line, non-linearity and non-uniformity of the line parameters; therefore, corona should not be neglected. The present work is meant to provide the reader with comprehensive information on the corona macroscopic phenomenology and development, referring to the most relevant contributions in the literature on this subject. The models proposed in the literature for the simulation of the corona development are reviewed in detail, and sensitivity curves are provided to highlight their dependence on the input parameters.

Actual interconnects are analysed and simulated by means of equivalent Spice-like circuits accounting for both dielectric and conductive losses. New analytical expressions are proposed for the effective permittivity allowing fast and accurate propagation sensitivity analysis with respect to parametric variations of configuration and materials. Accuracy of equivalent circuits is tested against analytical models, while the model of the effective permittivity is compared with numerical results.

We investigate the improvement of the lightning performance of overhead distribution lines by additional ground wires placed beneath phase conductors. We adopt a time-domain method based on the matrix formalism of multiconductor (MTL) transmission lines that allows for the computation of overvoltages across insulator strings, when direct lightning hits a tower or a ground wire.
