    © 2018 The Authors This paper provides a critical literature overview of the foundations of the concepts of sustainability and sociotechnical systems change. This review covers the analysis of 182 scientific articles through a combination of bibliometric analysis, snowballing, content analysis and problematization. Our results identify and discuss 14 unique ontological and normative foundations shaping how we understand sociotechnical system change for sustainability. These influence both what system change is perceived as desirable and as attainable; as well as how to navigate between all the coexisting pathways, trade-offs, and complexities of the three dimensions of sustainability. By identifying the theoretical foundations, we illustrate the most up-to-date theoretical developments and concomitantly pinpoint a few opportunities for future contributions that improve, refute or complement them, hence shedding light on various research questions to develop the literature further.

    Abstract Oil trade is one of the most vital networks in the global economy. In this paper, we analyze the 1998–2012 oil trade networks using the point-wise mutual information (PMI) method and determine the pairwise trade preferences and dependencies. Using examples of the USA's trade partners, this research demonstrates the usefulness of the PMI method as an additional methodological tool to evaluate the outcomes from countries' decisions to engage in preferred trading partners. A positive PMI value indicates trade preference where trade is larger than would be expected. For example, in 2012 the USA imported 2,548.7 kbpd despite an expected 358.5 kbpd of oil from Canada. Conversely, a negative PMI value indicates trade dis-preference where the amount of trade is smaller than what would be expected. For example, the 15-year average of annual PMI between Saudi Arabia and the U.S.A. is −0.130 and between Russia and the USA −1.596. We reflect the three primary reasons of discrepancies between actual and neutral model trade can be related to position, price, and politics. The PMI can quantify the political success or failure of trade preferences and can more accurately account temporal variation of interdependencies.

    As cities represent the microcosms of global environmental change, it is very important for the global sustainable development by decoupling environmental pressure from economic growth on city level. In this paper, the municipality of Chongqing in China is employed as a case to show whether the decoupling of environmental pressures from economic growth has occurred in cities undergoing rapid economic growth; what is the level of decoupling; and what causes the observed degree of decoupling. Results show the following. (1) During the period of 1999–2010, decoupling from economic growth has been absolute for the emissions of SO2, soot, and waste water, while it has been relative for total energy consumption, emissions of CO2 and solid waste. (2) Compared with the period 2000–2005, decoupling level improved for all the six environmental pressures in the period 2005–2010. (3) Compared with China and other three municipalities of China, the overall decoupling level of Chongqing is above China’s average while below those of Beijing and Shanghai. (4) During the period 1999–2000, technological change was the dominate factor for decoupling Chongqing’s environmental pressure from economic growth, as it contributed 131.4%, 134.6%, 99.9%, 97.7%, 104.5% and 54.9% to the decoupling of total energy consumption, emissions of CO2, SO2, soot, waste water and solid waste, respectively; while economic structural change had very tiny effect to the decoupling of emissions of soot and SO2, and it even had negative effect to that of total energy consumption, and emissions of CO2 and waste water. Based on the above observations, we explain the difference in decoupling levels for different environmental pressures and suggest approaches for policy-makers on further promoting decoupling environmental pressure from economic growth.

    Abstract Structural decomposition analysis (SDA) is a very commonly used method for exploring the driving forces of environmental pressure (EP). Enhanced with attribution analysis, SDA can further decompose the driving forces of EP into economic sectors or sub-regions and provide more detailed evidence-based policymaking. However, current studies of SDA with attribution analysis have not been sufficiently developed and are only one-tiered, i.e., they decompose the driving forces of EP into either a sub-regional or an economic sectoral level. In this study, we introduce a method of SDA with a two-tiered attribution analysis, which is capable of 1) exploring the driving force of environmental pressure at a multi-regional level and 2) further decomposing the driving forces of EP into both sub-regions and economic sectors. Based on this method, we explore the driving forces for the change of energy consumption in the Jing-Jin-Ji region during the period of 2007–2012. Results of this case study indicate that technological change, final demand structure, and final demand composition respectively contributed −129%, 12%, and −3% while affluence, production structure, total population, and population structure respectively contributed 129%, 77%, 38%, and 2% to energy consumption change in the region. In terms of sub-regional and economic sectoral level contributions, Hebei province and the chemical and smelting and rolling of metals industries were the most prominent contributors. Through this case study, we situate the strengths and limitations of the two-tiered attribution SDA method and propose key policy suggestions and future research directions.

    Environmental education is essential in the diffusion of the ethics, values, and skills that are critical to sustainable transformations. This paper presents the experience of non-formal environmental education approaches held in schools in the Petrópolis region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1997–2016. This paper adds to the literature on the relevant approaches and effectives of non-formal environmental education, especially in the vulnerable areas of low and middle-income regions that face critical environmental challenges. Specifically, to set up the context, this paper intends to firstly convey the commonly identified environmental sustainability challenges that the communities of the Petrópolis region are facing. Secondly, this report aims to convey key insights on how non-formal environmental education practices can strengthen gardening skills, environmental ethics, and sustainable food practices. These approaches have the potential to enhance the capacity of students toward sustainable transformations through encouraging them to be engaged with local social-environmental challenges. This paper adds new insights to the growing literature on non-formal environmental education, and it is hoped to inspire new educational approaches among sustainability educators.

    Environmental education is essential in the diffusion of the ethics, values, and skills that are critical to sustainable transformations. This paper presents the experience of non-formal environmental education approaches held in schools in the Petrópolis region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1997–2016. This paper adds to the literature on the relevant approaches and effectives of non-formal environmental education, especially in the vulnerable areas of low and middle-income regions that face critical environmental challenges. Specifically, to set up the context, this paper intends to firstly convey the commonly identified environmental sustainability challenges that the communities of the Petrópolis region are facing. Secondly, this report aims to convey key insights on how non-formal environmental education practices can strengthen gardening skills, environmental ethics, and sustainable food practices. These approaches have the potential to enhance the capacity of students toward sustainable transformations through encouraging them to be engaged with local social-environmental challenges. This paper adds new insights to the growing literature on non-formal environmental education, and it is hoped to inspire new educational approaches among sustainability educators.

    This paper proposes a solution to the electric Vehicle Scheduling Problem (eVSP) based on the framework of Discrete Event System (DES). A supervisory control is synthesized using the theory of Supervisory Control of Discrete Event System (SCDES) to manage the power admission control of a group of local Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV). The PEVs are categorized based on their level of priority to be charged and an algorithm is developed to allocate power to PEVs according to their priority and available capacity. The proposed algorithm and supervisor validates the schedulability of charging of PEVs while meeting the constraint of the grid to achieve peak demand reduction. Simulation studies are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and STATEFLOW toolkit and the result validates the effectiveness of the control scheme to reduce peak demand while providing fair charging schedules to PEVs.

    This paper proposes a solution to the electric Vehicle Scheduling Problem (eVSP) based on the framework of Discrete Event System (DES). A supervisory control is synthesized using the theory of Supervisory Control of Discrete Event System (SCDES) to manage the power admission control of a group of local Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV). The PEVs are categorized based on their level of priority to be charged and an algorithm is developed to allocate power to PEVs according to their priority and available capacity. The proposed algorithm and supervisor validates the schedulability of charging of PEVs while meeting the constraint of the grid to achieve peak demand reduction. Simulation studies are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and STATEFLOW toolkit and the result validates the effectiveness of the control scheme to reduce peak demand while providing fair charging schedules to PEVs.

    Power system stabilizers have been widely used in generation systems to enhance the transient stability of the power system. Low frequency oscillation may occur as a result of excitation system which exerts a phase lag. Conventional power system stabilizers using a lead-lag controller have been used in utility for decades. Proper tunning of the parameters of stabilizer is essential for effectiveness of stabilizer. Many optimization techniques have been proposed for finding the optimum parameters of stabilizer. In this paper tuning of parameters of a Conventional Power System Stabilizer in a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) using Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed. The power system is modelled in Power Factory and the optimization is done through MATLAB optimization toolbox. The cost function is to maximize the damping ratio which is calculated using Power Factory Modal Analysis. Using DIgSILENT Programming Language (DPL), a real time data exchange between MATLAB and Power factory is set during optimization process. The result of simulation proves the effectiveness of optimization process.

    Our societies are continuously grappling with how to achieve rapid economic growth while minimizing the challenges of environmental sustainability. In this avenue, numerous studies have contributed towards investigating socio-economic factors and developing policies targeting environmental pressures (EPs). While previous studies have tended to focus on the individual driving forces of EPs, the consideration of the co-benefits and trade-offs among different EPs and policies have been considerably overlooked. In China, previous studies have mostly engaged these issues at the national level and have overlooked the regional socio-economic characteristics – this presents a mismatch between regional policy applications and average national level research findings. Towards this end, this study examines the co-benefits and trade-offs of eight EPs in Zhejiang during the 2007–2015 period. Our findings revealed strict co-benefits in reductions of all eight EPs due to intensity changes as well as trade-offs due to changes in final demand structure and final demand composition. Sectoral results show that only the Non-Ferrous Metal Ores sector has strict co-benefits among all EPs from the production perspective, while eight sectors have strict co-benefits from the consumption perspective mainly including the Mining and Washing of Coal, Ferrous Metal Ores, Electric Power and Heat Power sectors. Our findings suggest important policy implications associated with utilizing co-benefits and avoiding trade-offs for EP mitigation: making full use of all driving forces, strengthening intersectoral coordination, and establishing a joint evaluation mechanism among different sectors.

    The resilience of the phosphorus (P) cycling network is critical to ecosystem functioning and human activities. Although P cycling pathways have been previously mapped, a knowledge gap remains in evaluating the P network's ability to withstand shocks or disturbances. Applying principles of mass balance and ecological network analysis, we examine the network resilience of P cycling in China from 1600 to 2012. The results show that changes in network resilience have shifted from being driven by natural P flows for food production to being driven by industrial P flows for chemical fertilizer production. Urbanization has intensified the one-way journey of P, further deteriorating network resilience. Over 2000-2012, the network resilience of P cycling has decreased by 11% owing to dietary changes towards more animal-based foods. A trade-off between network resilience improvement and increasing food trade is also observed. These findings can support policy decisions for enhanced P cycling network resilience in China.

    The resilience of the phosphorus (P) cycling network is critical to ecosystem functioning and human activities. Although P cycling pathways have been previously mapped, a knowledge gap remains in evaluating the P network's ability to withstand shocks or disturbances. Applying principles of mass balance and ecological network analysis, we examine the network resilience of P cycling in China from 1600 to 2012. The results show that changes in network resilience have shifted from being driven by natural P flows for food production to being driven by industrial P flows for chemical fertilizer production. Urbanization has intensified the one-way journey of P, further deteriorating network resilience. Over 2000-2012, the network resilience of P cycling has decreased by 11% owing to dietary changes towards more animal-based foods. A trade-off between network resilience improvement and increasing food trade is also observed. These findings can support policy decisions for enhanced P cycling network resilience in China.

    © 2018 The Authors This paper provides a critical literature overview of the foundations of the concepts of sustainability and sociotechnical systems change. This review covers the analysis of 182 scientific articles through a combination of bibliometric analysis, snowballing, content analysis and problematization. Our results identify and discuss 14 unique ontological and normative foundations shaping how we understand sociotechnical system change for sustainability. These influence both what system change is perceived as desirable and as attainable; as well as how to navigate between all the coexisting pathways, trade-offs, and complexities of the three dimensions of sustainability. By identifying the theoretical foundations, we illustrate the most up-to-date theoretical developments and concomitantly pinpoint a few opportunities for future contributions that improve, refute or complement them, hence shedding light on various research questions to develop the literature further.

    Abstract Oil trade is one of the most vital networks in the global economy. In this paper, we analyze the 1998–2012 oil trade networks using the point-wise mutual information (PMI) method and determine the pairwise trade preferences and dependencies. Using examples of the USA's trade partners, this research demonstrates the usefulness of the PMI method as an additional methodological tool to evaluate the outcomes from countries' decisions to engage in preferred trading partners. A positive PMI value indicates trade preference where trade is larger than would be expected. For example, in 2012 the USA imported 2,548.7 kbpd despite an expected 358.5 kbpd of oil from Canada. Conversely, a negative PMI value indicates trade dis-preference where the amount of trade is smaller than what would be expected. For example, the 15-year average of annual PMI between Saudi Arabia and the U.S.A. is −0.130 and between Russia and the USA −1.596. We reflect the three primary reasons of discrepancies between actual and neutral model trade can be related to position, price, and politics. The PMI can quantify the political success or failure of trade preferences and can more accurately account temporal variation of interdependencies.

    As cities represent the microcosms of global environmental change, it is very important for the global sustainable development by decoupling environmental pressure from economic growth on city level. In this paper, the municipality of Chongqing in China is employed as a case to show whether the decoupling of environmental pressures from economic growth has occurred in cities undergoing rapid economic growth; what is the level of decoupling; and what causes the observed degree of decoupling. Results show the following. (1) During the period of 1999–2010, decoupling from economic growth has been absolute for the emissions of SO2, soot, and waste water, while it has been relative for total energy consumption, emissions of CO2 and solid waste. (2) Compared with the period 2000–2005, decoupling level improved for all the six environmental pressures in the period 2005–2010. (3) Compared with China and other three municipalities of China, the overall decoupling level of Chongqing is above China’s average while below those of Beijing and Shanghai. (4) During the period 1999–2000, technological change was the dominate factor for decoupling Chongqing’s environmental pressure from economic growth, as it contributed 131.4%, 134.6%, 99.9%, 97.7%, 104.5% and 54.9% to the decoupling of total energy consumption, emissions of CO2, SO2, soot, waste water and solid waste, respectively; while economic structural change had very tiny effect to the decoupling of emissions of soot and SO2, and it even had negative effect to that of total energy consumption, and emissions of CO2 and waste water. Based on the above observations, we explain the difference in decoupling levels for different environmental pressures and suggest approaches for policy-makers on further promoting decoupling environmental pressure from economic growth.

    Abstract Structural decomposition analysis (SDA) is a very commonly used method for exploring the driving forces of environmental pressure (EP). Enhanced with attribution analysis, SDA can further decompose the driving forces of EP into economic sectors or sub-regions and provide more detailed evidence-based policymaking. However, current studies of SDA with attribution analysis have not been sufficiently developed and are only one-tiered, i.e., they decompose the driving forces of EP into either a sub-regional or an economic sectoral level. In this study, we introduce a method of SDA with a two-tiered attribution analysis, which is capable of 1) exploring the driving force of environmental pressure at a multi-regional level and 2) further decomposing the driving forces of EP into both sub-regions and economic sectors. Based on this method, we explore the driving forces for the change of energy consumption in the Jing-Jin-Ji region during the period of 2007–2012. Results of this case study indicate that technological change, final demand structure, and final demand composition respectively contributed −129%, 12%, and −3% while affluence, production structure, total population, and population structure respectively contributed 129%, 77%, 38%, and 2% to energy consumption change in the region. In terms of sub-regional and economic sectoral level contributions, Hebei province and the chemical and smelting and rolling of metals industries were the most prominent contributors. Through this case study, we situate the strengths and limitations of the two-tiered attribution SDA method and propose key policy suggestions and future research directions.

    Abstract Structural decomposition analysis (SDA) is a very commonly used method for exploring the driving forces of environmental pressure (EP). Enhanced with attribution analysis, SDA can further decompose the driving forces of EP into economic sectors or sub-regions and provide more detailed evidence-based policymaking. However, current studies of SDA with attribution analysis have not been sufficiently developed and are only one-tiered, i.e., they decompose the driving forces of EP into either a sub-regional or an economic sectoral level. In this study, we introduce a method of SDA with a two-tiered attribution analysis, which is capable of 1) exploring the driving force of environmental pressure at a multi-regional level and 2) further decomposing the driving forces of EP into both sub-regions and economic sectors. Based on this method, we explore the driving forces for the change of energy consumption in the Jing-Jin-Ji region during the period of 2007–2012. Results of this case study indicate that technological change, final demand structure, and final demand composition respectively contributed −129%, 12%, and −3% while affluence, production structure, total population, and population structure respectively contributed 129%, 77%, 38%, and 2% to energy consumption change in the region. In terms of sub-regional and economic sectoral level contributions, Hebei province and the chemical and smelting and rolling of metals industries were the most prominent contributors. Through this case study, we situate the strengths and limitations of the two-tiered attribution SDA method and propose key policy suggestions and future research directions.

    Environmental education is essential in the diffusion of the ethics, values, and skills that are critical to sustainable transformations. This paper presents the experience of non-formal environmental education approaches held in schools in the Petrópolis region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1997–2016. This paper adds to the literature on the relevant approaches and effectives of non-formal environmental education, especially in the vulnerable areas of low and middle-income regions that face critical environmental challenges. Specifically, to set up the context, this paper intends to firstly convey the commonly identified environmental sustainability challenges that the communities of the Petrópolis region are facing. Secondly, this report aims to convey key insights on how non-formal environmental education practices can strengthen gardening skills, environmental ethics, and sustainable food practices. These approaches have the potential to enhance the capacity of students toward sustainable transformations through encouraging them to be engaged with local social-environmental challenges. This paper adds new insights to the growing literature on non-formal environmental education, and it is hoped to inspire new educational approaches among sustainability educators.

    This paper proposes a solution to the electric Vehicle Scheduling Problem (eVSP) based on the framework of Discrete Event System (DES). A supervisory control is synthesized using the theory of Supervisory Control of Discrete Event System (SCDES) to manage the power admission control of a group of local Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV). The PEVs are categorized based on their level of priority to be charged and an algorithm is developed to allocate power to PEVs according to their priority and available capacity. The proposed algorithm and supervisor validates the schedulability of charging of PEVs while meeting the constraint of the grid to achieve peak demand reduction. Simulation studies are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and STATEFLOW toolkit and the result validates the effectiveness of the control scheme to reduce peak demand while providing fair charging schedules to PEVs.

    Power system stabilizers have been widely used in generation systems to enhance the transient stability of the power system. Low frequency oscillation may occur as a result of excitation system which exerts a phase lag. Conventional power system stabilizers using a lead-lag controller have been used in utility for decades. Proper tunning of the parameters of stabilizer is essential for effectiveness of stabilizer. Many optimization techniques have been proposed for finding the optimum parameters of stabilizer. In this paper tuning of parameters of a Conventional Power System Stabilizer in a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) using Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed. The power system is modelled in Power Factory and the optimization is done through MATLAB optimization toolbox. The cost function is to maximize the damping ratio which is calculated using Power Factory Modal Analysis. Using DIgSILENT Programming Language (DPL), a real time data exchange between MATLAB and Power factory is set during optimization process. The result of simulation proves the effectiveness of optimization process.

    Our societies are continuously grappling with how to achieve rapid economic growth while minimizing the challenges of environmental sustainability. In this avenue, numerous studies have contributed towards investigating socio-economic factors and developing policies targeting environmental pressures (EPs). While previous studies have tended to focus on the individual driving forces of EPs, the consideration of the co-benefits and trade-offs among different EPs and policies have been considerably overlooked. In China, previous studies have mostly engaged these issues at the national level and have overlooked the regional socio-economic characteristics – this presents a mismatch between regional policy applications and average national level research findings. Towards this end, this study examines the co-benefits and trade-offs of eight EPs in Zhejiang during the 2007–2015 period. Our findings revealed strict co-benefits in reductions of all eight EPs due to intensity changes as well as trade-offs due to changes in final demand structure and final demand composition. Sectoral results show that only the Non-Ferrous Metal Ores sector has strict co-benefits among all EPs from the production perspective, while eight sectors have strict co-benefits from the consumption perspective mainly including the Mining and Washing of Coal, Ferrous Metal Ores, Electric Power and Heat Power sectors. Our findings suggest important policy implications associated with utilizing co-benefits and avoiding trade-offs for EP mitigation: making full use of all driving forces, strengthening intersectoral coordination, and establishing a joint evaluation mechanism among different sectors.

    The resilience of the phosphorus (P) cycling network is critical to ecosystem functioning and human activities. Although P cycling pathways have been previously mapped, a knowledge gap remains in evaluating the P network's ability to withstand shocks or disturbances. Applying principles of mass balance and ecological network analysis, we examine the network resilience of P cycling in China from 1600 to 2012. The results show that changes in network resilience have shifted from being driven by natural P flows for food production to being driven by industrial P flows for chemical fertilizer production. Urbanization has intensified the one-way journey of P, further deteriorating network resilience. Over 2000-2012, the network resilience of P cycling has decreased by 11% owing to dietary changes towards more animal-based foods. A trade-off between network resilience improvement and increasing food trade is also observed. These findings can support policy decisions for enhanced P cycling network resilience in China.
