This paper focuses on the analysis and design of two multilevel–multicell converters (MMCs), named 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel–Multicell Rectifier (3Φ5L E-Type MMR) and 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel–Multicell Inverter (3Φ5L E-Type MMI) to be used in microgrid applications. The proposed 3-phase E-Type multilevel rectifier and inverter have each phase being accomplished by the combination of two I-Type topologies connected to the T-Type topology. The two cells of each phase of the rectifier and inverter are connected in interleaving using an intercell transformer (ICT) in order to reduce the volume of the output filter. Such an E-Type topology arrangement is expected to allow both the high efficiency and power density required for microgrid applications, as well as being capable of providing good performance in terms of quality of the voltage and current waveforms. The proposed hardware design and control interface are supported by the simulation results performed in Matlab/Simulink. The analysis has been then validated in terms of an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype, which presented a power density of 8.4 kW/dm3 and a specific power of 3.24 kW/kg. The experimental results showed that the proposed converter can achieve a peak efficiency of 99% using only silicon power semiconductors.

This article presents a real-time active damping methodology for front-end inverters connected to the railway catenary in energy recovery applications. The system arrangement comprises a three-phase 2.5 MW inverter connected to the ac grid with a suitable filter. On the opposite side it shares the dc-side with the railway plant where traction inverters and auxiliary systems are connected. The proposed method tries to solve a problem when the energy recovery converter, operating with an almost constant power load, stimulates the catenary power line. This method estimates the dc-side resonant frequency, isolates the dc voltage oscillations around the resonant frequency, and finally attenuates the related effects by acting on the inverter current control strategy. Experimental tests are shown to validate the method using the hardware-in-the-loop real-time emulator. Thanks to the HIL, the complete catenary system has been modeled according to the real data provided by the train operator. The control algorithm and the related control board have the same structure as the architecture used in the field. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting the resonance and reducing its effects, increasing the catenary robustness, and making the proper integration of energy recovery systems possible.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of multi-port power electronics converters used for application in AC, DC, or hybrid distribution systems in an Internet of Energy scenario. In particular, multi-port solid-state transformer (SST) topologies have been addressed and classified according to their isolation capabilities and their conversion stages configurations. Non-conventional configurations have been considered. A comparison of the most relevant features and design specifications between popular topologies has been provided through a comprehensive and effective table. Potential benefits of SSTs in distribution applications have been highlighted even with reference to a network active nodes usage. This review also highlights standards and technical regulations in force for connecting SSTs to the electrical distribution system. Finally, two case studies of multi-port topologies have been presented and discussed. The first one is an isolated multi-port bidirectional dual active bridge DC-DC converter useful in fast-charging applications. The second case of study deals with a three-port AC-AC multi-level power converter in H-Bridge configuration able to replicate a network active node and capable of routing and controlling energy under different operating conditions.

Nowadays, many islands worldwide are lack of electrical energy. Thus, it is convenient to exploit available renewable energy sources, among which sea waves near the islands. This paper focuses on the power conversion system coupled with an offshore wave energy device, such as an improved linear generator, to be used for sea wave energy harvesting. Particularly, the design of the linear generator has been proposed to improve the energy efficiency of the entire system. The proposed power conversion system is composed by two Boost Rectifier (BR) directly coupled to the linear generator, and one Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), which it is used as front-end between the DC-bus and the grid. The proposed converters are realized using the Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices in order to improve the efficiency. Furthermore, the control strategy to regulate the generator side and grid side currents has been implemented. The proposed system has been validated using the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test bench and 20 kW SiC power converters.

The last few decades have seen a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) for private and public transportation around the world. This has resulted in high power demands on the electrical grid, especially when fast and ultra-fast or flash (at the bus-stop) charging are required. Consequently, a ground storage should be used in order to mitigate the peak power request period. This paper deals with an innovative and simple fast charging infrastructure based on supercapacitors, used to charge the energy storage system on board electric buses. According to the charging level of the electric bus, the proposed fast charging system is able to provide the maximum power of 180 kW without exceeding 30 s and without using DC–DC converters. In order to limit the maximum charging current, the electric bus is charged in three steps through three different connectors placed between the supercapacitors on board the bus and the fast charging system. The fast charging system has been carefully designed, taking into account several system parameters, such as charging time, maximum current, and voltage. Experimental tests have been performed on a fast charging station prototype to validate the theoretical analysis and functionality of the proposed architecture.

This paper focuses on the investigation and implementation of a high-performance power conversion system to reduce the overvoltage phenomenon in variable speed electric drive applications. Particularly, the pros and cons of using Silicon Carbide power MOSFETs in the power converter when a long power cable is employed in electric motor drive systems has been addressed. The three-phase two level inverter with the addition of snubber circuits that consist of capacitors and diodes has been investigated, designed and tested in order to mitigate the overvoltage problems without sacrificing the conversion efficiency. Given that the snubber circuit added to the switches can increase losses, an additional circuit is used to recover the energy from the snubber circuit. The proposed analysis has been then validated through an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can reduce the overvoltage at the electric motor terminals with excellent conversion efficiency compared to the classical solution like the three-phase two level inverter.

In the conventional grid-connected Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), the generator side inverter is typically controlled via Field Oriented Control (FOC), while Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) controls the grid side inverter. However, robust operation cannot be guaranteed during sudden changes in wind speeds and weak grid connections. This paper presents a novel method to improve the overall dynamic performance of on-grid induction machine-based wind generators. An online mechanical parameter estimation technique is devised using Recursive Least Squares (RLS) to compute the machine inertia and friction coefficient iteratively. An adaptive feedforward neural (AFN) controller is also proposed in the synchronous reference frame, which is constructed using the estimated parameters and the system’s inverse. The output of the neural controller is added to the output of the speed PI controller in the outer loop of the FOC to enhance the speed response of the wind generator. A similar approach is taken to improve the classical VOC structure for the grid-side inverter. In this case, the RLS estimates the equivalent Thevenin’s grid impedance in real-time. As for the adaptive action, two identical neural networks are integrated with the inner loop direct and quadrature axis current PI controllers. Under nominal operating conditions, it is observed that the PI+AFN provides a faster settling time for the generator’s speed and torque response. Upon being subjected to variations in the wind speed, the PI+AFN outperforms the classical PI controller and attains a lower integral-time error. In addition, the proposed PI+AFN controller has a better ability to maintain the grid-side inverter stability during stochastic variations in grid impedance. One significant advantage of the proposed control approach is that no data for training or validation is required since the neural network weights are directly the output of the RLS estimator. Hardware verification for the improved FOC for wind generators using the adaptive controller is also made using the DSPACE 1007 AUTOBOX platform.

In this paper, the analysis and the design of a high-efficiency power electronic conversion system for offshore wind applications are presented. This system is composed of a 6-phase AC–DC converter based on the SiC power semiconductors, to be used to control the achievable power from the wind turbine electrical generator. Thanks to the phase redundancy, the proposed boost rectifier is suitable for applications where reliability and fault tolerance capability are the main targets. To select the appropriate power semiconductor devices, voltage and current ratings have to be determined. After that, the power loss equations are derived in order to evaluate the conversion efficiency. To design the appropriate DC-bus capacitor configuration, an analytical investigation is carried out by estimating the DC-bus RMS current and the voltage ripple. Finally, the thermal sizing of the system is calculated to identify a suitable heatsink. To validate the proposed analysis, the analytical results are compared to simulation ones using the Plexim/PLECS tool in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. For further validation, a prototype of the converter is built and the experimental results are carried out. The results demonstrate that the peak efficiency of the 6-phase boost rectifier can reach 98% at 100 kHz switching frequency.

In this paper, the analysis and the design of a high-efficiency power electronic conversion system for offshore wind applications are presented. This system is composed of a 6-phase AC–DC converter based on the SiC power semiconductors, to be used to control the achievable power from the wind turbine electrical generator. Thanks to the phase redundancy, the proposed boost rectifier is suitable for applications where reliability and fault tolerance capability are the main targets. To select the appropriate power semiconductor devices, voltage and current ratings have to be determined. After that, the power loss equations are derived in order to evaluate the conversion efficiency. To design the appropriate DC-bus capacitor configuration, an analytical investigation is carried out by estimating the DC-bus RMS current and the voltage ripple. Finally, the thermal sizing of the system is calculated to identify a suitable heatsink. To validate the proposed analysis, the analytical results are compared to simulation ones using the Plexim/PLECS tool in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. For further validation, a prototype of the converter is built and the experimental results are carried out. The results demonstrate that the peak efficiency of the 6-phase boost rectifier can reach 98% at 100 kHz switching frequency.

This paper deals with the energy recovery resulting from the braking transient of trains arriving in a railway station, to feed a railway micro-grid that would be purposely connected to the railway traction circuit to feed the electrical infrastructure required for charging a fleet of electrical vehicles that are parked nearby the station and offered for providing train plus electric vehicle integrated mobility. Based on results of an experimental campaign intended to recording the mechanical quantities related to the braking transient of regional trains arriving in a medium-size station of the Italian railways network, this paper describes a suitable quasi-stationary model that allows the evaluation of the amount of energy that is recoverable over each single day of operation, as well as the micro-grid dynamic electric behaviour due to the sudden energy recovery transient in the railway catenary. The proposed railway micro-grid is discussed, particularly concerning the configuration of the dual-active-bridge converter for regulating the power flow from the railway catenary to the micro-grid during an energy recovery transient, as well as by considering the DC-DC converter that is used in the micro-grid, together with battery storage to provide voltage stability according to the micro-grid operating condition.

The growing demand for higher reliability and efficiency in modern electric drives, coupled with the increasing adoption of multi-phase machines, has necessitated advancements in fault-tolerant control strategies. This paper presents a fault tolerance analysis for a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) connected to a five-level cascaded H-bridge converter, employing a level-shift pulse width modulation (LSPWM) technique. Unlike existing strategies, this work integrates a unique combination of three key innovations: first, a fault detection mechanism capable of identifying faults in both machine phases and inverter legs with high precision; second, an open-circuit fault compensation strategy that dynamically reconfigures the faulty inverter phase leg into a two-level topology to reduce losses and preserve healthy switches; and third, a modified closed-loop control method designed specifically to mitigate the adverse effects of short-circuit faults while maintaining system stability. The proposed approach is validated through rigorous simulations in Simulink and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests, demonstrating its robustness and applicability in high-reliability applications.

This paper focuses on the analysis and design of two multilevel–multicell converters (MMCs), named 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel–Multicell Rectifier (3Φ5L E-Type MMR) and 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel–Multicell Inverter (3Φ5L E-Type MMI) to be used in microgrid applications. The proposed 3-phase E-Type multilevel rectifier and inverter have each phase being accomplished by the combination of two I-Type topologies connected to the T-Type topology. The two cells of each phase of the rectifier and inverter are connected in interleaving using an intercell transformer (ICT) in order to reduce the volume of the output filter. Such an E-Type topology arrangement is expected to allow both the high efficiency and power density required for microgrid applications, as well as being capable of providing good performance in terms of quality of the voltage and current waveforms. The proposed hardware design and control interface are supported by the simulation results performed in Matlab/Simulink. The analysis has been then validated in terms of an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype, which presented a power density of 8.4 kW/dm3 and a specific power of 3.24 kW/kg. The experimental results showed that the proposed converter can achieve a peak efficiency of 99% using only silicon power semiconductors.

This article presents a real-time active damping methodology for front-end inverters connected to the railway catenary in energy recovery applications. The system arrangement comprises a three-phase 2.5 MW inverter connected to the ac grid with a suitable filter. On the opposite side it shares the dc-side with the railway plant where traction inverters and auxiliary systems are connected. The proposed method tries to solve a problem when the energy recovery converter, operating with an almost constant power load, stimulates the catenary power line. This method estimates the dc-side resonant frequency, isolates the dc voltage oscillations around the resonant frequency, and finally attenuates the related effects by acting on the inverter current control strategy. Experimental tests are shown to validate the method using the hardware-in-the-loop real-time emulator. Thanks to the HIL, the complete catenary system has been modeled according to the real data provided by the train operator. The control algorithm and the related control board have the same structure as the architecture used in the field. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting the resonance and reducing its effects, increasing the catenary robustness, and making the proper integration of energy recovery systems possible.

This method estimates the dc-side resonant frequency, isolates the dc voltage oscillations around the resonant frequency, and finally attenuates the related effects by acting on the inverter current control strategy. Experimental tests are shown to validate the method using the hardware-in-the-loop real-time emulator. Thanks to the HIL, the complete catenary system has been modeled according to the real data provided by the train operator. The control algorithm and the related control board have the same structure as the architecture used in the field. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting the resonance and reducing its effects, increasing the catenary robustness, and making the proper integration of energy recovery systems possible.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of multi-port power electronics converters used for application in AC, DC, or hybrid distribution systems in an Internet of Energy scenario. In particular, multi-port solid-state transformer (SST) topologies have been addressed and classified according to their isolation capabilities and their conversion stages configurations. Non-conventional configurations have been considered. A comparison of the most relevant features and design specifications between popular topologies has been provided through a comprehensive and effective table. Potential benefits of SSTs in distribution applications have been highlighted even with reference to a network active nodes usage. This review also highlights standards and technical regulations in force for connecting SSTs to the electrical distribution system. Finally, two case studies of multi-port topologies have been presented and discussed. The first one is an isolated multi-port bidirectional dual active bridge DC-DC converter useful in fast-charging applications. The second case of study deals with a three-port AC-AC multi-level power converter in H-Bridge configuration able to replicate a network active node and capable of routing and controlling energy under different operating conditions.

Nowadays, many islands worldwide are lack of electrical energy. Thus, it is convenient to exploit available renewable energy sources, among which sea waves near the islands. This paper focuses on the power conversion system coupled with an offshore wave energy device, such as an improved linear generator, to be used for sea wave energy harvesting. Particularly, the design of the linear generator has been proposed to improve the energy efficiency of the entire system. The proposed power conversion system is composed by two Boost Rectifier (BR) directly coupled to the linear generator, and one Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), which it is used as front-end between the DC-bus and the grid. The proposed converters are realized using the Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices in order to improve the efficiency. Furthermore, the control strategy to regulate the generator side and grid side currents has been implemented. The proposed system has been validated using the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test bench and 20 kW SiC power converters.

The last few decades have seen a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) for private and public transportation around the world. This has resulted in high power demands on the electrical grid, especially when fast and ultra-fast or flash (at the bus-stop) charging are required. Consequently, a ground storage should be used in order to mitigate the peak power request period. This paper deals with an innovative and simple fast charging infrastructure based on supercapacitors, used to charge the energy storage system on board electric buses. According to the charging level of the electric bus, the proposed fast charging system is able to provide the maximum power of 180 kW without exceeding 30 s and without using DC–DC converters. In order to limit the maximum charging current, the electric bus is charged in three steps through three different connectors placed between the supercapacitors on board the bus and the fast charging system. The fast charging system has been carefully designed, taking into account several system parameters, such as charging time, maximum current, and voltage. Experimental tests have been performed on a fast charging station prototype to validate the theoretical analysis and functionality of the proposed architecture.

This paper focuses on the investigation and implementation of a high-performance power conversion system to reduce the overvoltage phenomenon in variable speed electric drive applications. Particularly, the pros and cons of using Silicon Carbide power MOSFETs in the power converter when a long power cable is employed in electric motor drive systems has been addressed. The three-phase two level inverter with the addition of snubber circuits that consist of capacitors and diodes has been investigated, designed and tested in order to mitigate the overvoltage problems without sacrificing the conversion efficiency. Given that the snubber circuit added to the switches can increase losses, an additional circuit is used to recover the energy from the snubber circuit. The proposed analysis has been then validated through an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can reduce the overvoltage at the electric motor terminals with excellent conversion efficiency compared to the classical solution like the three-phase two level inverter.

This paper focuses on the investigation and implementation of a high-performance power conversion system to reduce the overvoltage phenomenon in variable speed electric drive applications. Particularly, the pros and cons of using Silicon Carbide power MOSFETs in the power converter when a long power cable is employed in electric motor drive systems has been addressed. The three-phase two level inverter with the addition of snubber circuits that consist of capacitors and diodes has been investigated, designed and tested in order to mitigate the overvoltage problems without sacrificing the conversion efficiency. Given that the snubber circuit added to the switches can increase losses, an additional circuit is used to recover the energy from the snubber circuit. The proposed analysis has been then validated through an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can reduce the overvoltage at the electric motor terminals with excellent conversion efficiency compared to the classical solution like the three-phase two level inverter.

In the conventional grid-connected Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), the generator side inverter is typically controlled via Field Oriented Control (FOC), while Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) controls the grid side inverter. However, robust operation cannot be guaranteed during sudden changes in wind speeds and weak grid connections. This paper presents a novel method to improve the overall dynamic performance of on-grid induction machine-based wind generators. An online mechanical parameter estimation technique is devised using Recursive Least Squares (RLS) to compute the machine inertia and friction coefficient iteratively. An adaptive feedforward neural (AFN) controller is also proposed in the synchronous reference frame, which is constructed using the estimated parameters and the system’s inverse. The output of the neural controller is added to the output of the speed PI controller in the outer loop of the FOC to enhance the speed response of the wind generator. A similar approach is taken to improve the classical VOC structure for the grid-side inverter. In this case, the RLS estimates the equivalent Thevenin’s grid impedance in real-time. As for the adaptive action, two identical neural networks are integrated with the inner loop direct and quadrature axis current PI controllers. Under nominal operating conditions, it is observed that the PI+AFN provides a faster settling time for the generator’s speed and torque response. Upon being subjected to variations in the wind speed, the PI+AFN outperforms the classical PI controller and attains a lower integral-time error. In addition, the proposed PI+AFN controller has a better ability to maintain the grid-side inverter stability during stochastic variations in grid impedance. One significant advantage of the proposed control approach is that no data for training or validation is required since the neural network weights are directly the output of the RLS estimator. Hardware verification for the improved FOC for wind generators using the adaptive controller is also made using the DSPACE 1007 AUTOBOX platform.

In this paper, the analysis and the design of a high-efficiency power electronic conversion system for offshore wind applications are presented. This system is composed of a 6-phase AC–DC converter based on the SiC power semiconductors, to be used to control the achievable power from the wind turbine electrical generator. Thanks to the phase redundancy, the proposed boost rectifier is suitable for applications where reliability and fault tolerance capability are the main targets. To select the appropriate power semiconductor devices, voltage and current ratings have to be determined. After that, the power loss equations are derived in order to evaluate the conversion efficiency. To design the appropriate DC-bus capacitor configuration, an analytical investigation is carried out by estimating the DC-bus RMS current and the voltage ripple. Finally, the thermal sizing of the system is calculated to identify a suitable heatsink. To validate the proposed analysis, the analytical results are compared to simulation ones using the Plexim/PLECS tool in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. For further validation, a prototype of the converter is built and the experimental results are carried out. The results demonstrate that the peak efficiency of the 6-phase boost rectifier can reach 98% at 100 kHz switching frequency.

This paper deals with the energy recovery resulting from the braking transient of trains arriving in a railway station, to feed a railway micro-grid that would be purposely connected to the railway traction circuit to feed the electrical infrastructure required for charging a fleet of electrical vehicles that are parked nearby the station and offered for providing train plus electric vehicle integrated mobility. Based on results of an experimental campaign intended to recording the mechanical quantities related to the braking transient of regional trains arriving in a medium-size station of the Italian railways network, this paper describes a suitable quasi-stationary model that allows the evaluation of the amount of energy that is recoverable over each single day of operation, as well as the micro-grid dynamic electric behaviour due to the sudden energy recovery transient in the railway catenary. The proposed railway micro-grid is discussed, particularly concerning the configuration of the dual-active-bridge converter for regulating the power flow from the railway catenary to the micro-grid during an energy recovery transient, as well as by considering the DC-DC converter that is used in the micro-grid, together with battery storage to provide voltage stability according to the micro-grid operating condition.

The growing demand for higher reliability and efficiency in modern electric drives, coupled with the increasing adoption of multi-phase machines, has necessitated advancements in fault-tolerant control strategies. This paper presents a fault tolerance analysis for a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) connected to a five-level cascaded H-bridge converter, employing a level-shift pulse width modulation (LSPWM) technique. Unlike existing strategies, this work integrates a unique combination of three key innovations: first, a fault detection mechanism capable of identifying faults in both machine phases and inverter legs with high precision; second, an open-circuit fault compensation strategy that dynamically reconfigures the faulty inverter phase leg into a two-level topology to reduce losses and preserve healthy switches; and third, a modified closed-loop control method designed specifically to mitigate the adverse effects of short-circuit faults while maintaining system stability. The proposed approach is validated through rigorous simulations in Simulink and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests, demonstrating its robustness and applicability in high-reliability applications.

The growing demand for higher reliability and efficiency in modern electric drives, coupled with the increasing adoption of multi-phase machines, has necessitated advancements in fault-tolerant control strategies. This paper presents a fault tolerance analysis for a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) connected to a five-level cascaded H-bridge converter, employing a level-shift pulse width modulation (LSPWM) technique.
