    Forest biomass is a sustainable source of renewable energy and a valuable alternative to finite fossil fuels. However, its overharvesting may lead to soil nutrient depletion and threaten future stand productivity, as well as affect the habitat for biodiversity. This paper provides quantitative data on biomass removal, fine woody debris [d ≤ 7 cm], and coarse woody debris [d > 7 cm] left on the forest floor in whole tree harvesting systems. Using tree allometric equations and inventory field methods for woody debris estimation, we assessed biomass removal on nine fuelwood harvesting sites in Central France, as well as fine and coarse woody debris left on the sites. The aboveground biomass estimates showed a high variability between the studied sites, it varied between 118 and 519 Mg ha−1. However, less variability was found among sites managed as coppice-with-standards 174 ± 56 Mg ha−1. Exported biomass was 107 ± 42 Mg ha−1 on average, including 35 ± 9% of fine wood. The amounts of both fine and coarse woody debris left on sites were generally less than 10% of the total harvested biomass in 2/3 of the studied sites. These amounts are lower than the minimum retention levels recommended by the sustainable forest biomass harvesting guidelines. Therefore, more technical effort and additional management measures should be taken to ensure more woody debris, especially in poor forest soils and thus, to guarantee a sustainable biomass harvesting.

    Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1–3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss. In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of three macrophyte species (Iris pseudacorus, Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis) for detoxication of xenobiotics, and to study their variations with seasons or concentrations of sewage sludge from the food industry. For this purpose, some aspects of the green liver concept were explored through peroxidase measurements in three compartments in roots: intracellular, cell wall and extracellular. In addition, phenol concentrations were also measured in order to assess heavy metal detoxication potential. Enzyme activities and phenol concentrations were overall lower in winter according to the phenological stages and some sludge effects occurred. Results show that P. australis roots exuded and contained more peroxidase in all seasons: 17 U/g (1373 U/g protein), 0.8 U/g (613 U/g protein) and 4.8 U/g (1329 U/g protein) in intracellular compartments, cell wall and exudates, respectively. In contrast, the highest phenol concentration was found in I. pseudacorus roots: 3.58 mg eq. [corrected] gallic acid/g. Hence, in constructed wetlands, P. australis is suitable for organic waste water treatment, while I. pseudacorus should be used in the case of waters highly charged with heavy metals.

    Forest management aims to maintain sustainable production of quality wood while limiting increased competition between trees for light, water, and nutrients. Thinning is a widely used silvicultural practice to reduce plants competition for resources while still exploiting the wood. The investigation of the effects of forest management on stand functioning typically centers on the above-ground compartment, overlooking the alterations and influences exerted on below-ground biotic factors. Within the soil matrix, biological mechanisms are mainly governed by microbial communities. Many studies have focused on the effects of thinning on soil microbial communities (SMC), evidencing contrasted effects. Conversely, stand density effects on SMC are less documented. The aim of this study is therefore to focus on the effects of stand density (SD) on SMC biomass, gene abundance, functional diversity, and activity, according two sylvicultural practices: dynamic (low SD) and conservative (medium SD) in a temperate Quercus petraea Stand (QS) in Europe Forest. We hypothesized that dynamic silviculture (low-SD) could promote soil SMC biomass, abundance, functional diversity, and activity. Our results showed that dynamic silvicultural practices in oak forests reduced the abundances of bacteria, archaea and fungi were reduced by 43 %, 29 % and 34 %, respectively. SMC functional diversity was reduced by 10 % in dynamic forestry stands. On the contrary, dynamic silvicultural practices increased soil microbial activity by 13 to 47 %, depending on the carbon source added, compared with conservative silviculture. Our results were incremented with an extensive number of biotic and abiotic environmental variables that had contrasting effects on SMC, and there is no single factor, which alone can explain all the SMC responses. Our results seem to advocate dynamic silvicultural practices in oak forests to promote soil microbial activity. However, it remains to be seen what the long-term effects will be of the reduced abundance and functional diversity of SMCs observed jointly in low-SD.

    Vertical-flow wetland systems were tested for treatment of liquid waste activated sludge with high content of organic compounds from a soft drink factory. A mesocosm experiment was carried out on planted and unplanted systems to understand the relative importance of substrate and plants in purification processes and to compare three species: Phragmites australis Cav., Typha latifolia L., or Iris pseudacorus L. All planted mesocosms performed better than unplanted mesocosms and Phragmites showed the highest efficiencies, both in volumes and loads, closely followed by Typha. Removal efficiencies were very high in all cases, and physical filtration by the organic substrate was identified as the main processes for nutrient removal (>50%). We showed that plants played direct and indirect roles such as nutrients uptake (up to 23% of the N for Phragmites), evapotranspiration reducing outflow volumes; or improvement of filtration by the root systems and stimulation of microbial activities (respiration rate was double compared to unplanted mesocosms).

    Ensuring sustainable forest management while strengthening the competitiveness of the forest and woodproducts sector is a major challenge for the economic development of rural areas in the Center-Val de Loire region. Upstream actors in the sector face two challenges: first, harvesting more wood to meet the increasing demand for wood products and renewable energy without deteriorating the already poor soils predominant in the region's forests; and second, finding solutions to help forests adapt to climate change. In the PSDR DEFIFORBOIS project, researchers and actors from INRAE, ONF, FCBA, Fibois, CNPF and Unisylva have joined forces to carry out: i) a prospective analysis of the means required to ensure an increased harvest of forest resources for regional logging companies'; ii) a technical and environmental diagnosis of local whole-tree harvesting practices and their impact on soils and biodiversity so as to propose recommendations for sustainable fuelwood harvesting methods adapted to the regional context.

    Gérer durablement les forêts et renforcer la compétitivité de la filière forêt-bois sont des enjeux forts pour le développement économique des territoires ruraux de la région Centre-Val de Loire. Les acteurs amont de la filière doivent faire face à deux défis : mobiliser davantage de bois pour répondre à la demande croissante en matériaux biosourcés et en énergie renouvelable, sans altérer la fertilité des sols majoritairement pauvres, et trouver des solutions pour favoriser l’adaptation des peuplements au changement climatique. Des chercheurs et acteurs d’INRAE, de l’ONF, du FCBA, de Fibois Centre-Val de Loire, du CNPF et d’Unisylva se sont associés pour mener, dans le cadre du projet PSDR4 DEFIFORBOIS : i) une analyse prospective des moyens nécessaires aux entreprises régionalesd’exploitation forestière pour assurer la mobilisation accrue de bois, ii) un diagnostic technique et environnemental des pratiques locales de récolte du bois énergie par arbre entier et de leurs impacts sur les sols et la biodiversité pour proposer des recommandations adaptées au contexte régional, iii) une étude de la vulnérabilité des essences en place et l’identification d’essences nouvelles potentiellement mieux adaptées à tester en plantations comparatives iv) le test d’une pédagogie permettant d’aplanir lesinégalités d’acceptabilité sociale vis-à-vis des politiques et pratiques de transformation volontaire des forêts face au changement climatique.     Forest biomass is a sustainable source of renewable energy and a valuable alternative to finite fossil fuels. However, its overharvesting may lead to soil nutrient depletion and threaten future stand productivity, as well as affect the habitat for biodiversity. This paper provides quantitative data on biomass removal, fine woody debris [d ≤ 7 cm], and coarse woody debris [d > 7 cm] left on the forest floor in whole tree harvesting systems. Using tree allometric equations and inventory field methods for woody debris estimation, we assessed biomass removal on nine fuelwood harvesting sites in Central France, as well as fine and coarse woody debris left on the sites. The aboveground biomass estimates showed a high variability between the studied sites, it varied between 118 and 519 Mg ha−1. However, less variability was found among sites managed as coppice-with-standards 174 ± 56 Mg ha−1. Exported biomass was 107 ± 42 Mg ha−1 on average, including 35 ± 9% of fine wood. The amounts of both fine and coarse woody debris left on sites were generally less than 10% of the total harvested biomass in 2/3 of the studied sites. These amounts are lower than the minimum retention levels recommended by the sustainable forest biomass harvesting guidelines. Therefore, more technical effort and additional management measures should be taken to ensure more woody debris, especially in poor forest soils and thus, to guarantee a sustainable biomass harvesting.

    Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1–3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss. In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of three macrophyte species (Iris pseudacorus, Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis) for detoxication of xenobiotics, and to study their variations with seasons or concentrations of sewage sludge from the food industry. For this purpose, some aspects of the green liver concept were explored through peroxidase measurements in three compartments in roots: intracellular, cell wall and extracellular. In addition, phenol concentrations were also measured in order to assess heavy metal detoxication potential. Enzyme activities and phenol concentrations were overall lower in winter according to the phenological stages and some sludge effects occurred. Results show that P. australis roots exuded and contained more peroxidase in all seasons: 17 U/g (1373 U/g protein), 0.8 U/g (613 U/g protein) and 4.8 U/g (1329 U/g protein) in intracellular compartments, cell wall and exudates, respectively. In contrast, the highest phenol concentration was found in I. pseudacorus roots: 3.58 mg eq. [corrected] gallic acid/g. Hence, in constructed wetlands, P. australis is suitable for organic waste water treatment, while I. pseudacorus should be used in the case of waters highly charged with heavy metals.

    Forest management aims to maintain sustainable production of quality wood while limiting increased competition between trees for light, water, and nutrients. Thinning is a widely used silvicultural practice to reduce plants competition for resources while still exploiting the wood. The investigation of the effects of forest management on stand functioning typically centers on the above-ground compartment, overlooking the alterations and influences exerted on below-ground biotic factors. Within the soil matrix, biological mechanisms are mainly governed by microbial communities. Many studies have focused on the effects of thinning on soil microbial communities (SMC), evidencing contrasted effects. Conversely, stand density effects on SMC are less documented. The aim of this study is therefore to focus on the effects of stand density (SD) on SMC biomass, gene abundance, functional diversity, and activity, according two sylvicultural practices: dynamic (low SD) and conservative (medium SD) in a temperate Quercus petraea Stand (QS) in Europe Forest. We hypothesized that dynamic silviculture (low-SD) could promote soil SMC biomass, abundance, functional diversity, and activity. Our results showed that dynamic silvicultural practices in oak forests reduced the abundances of bacteria, archaea and fungi were reduced by 43 %, 29 % and 34 %, respectively. SMC functional diversity was reduced by 10 % in dynamic forestry stands. On the contrary, dynamic silvicultural practices increased soil microbial activity by 13 to 47 %, depending on the carbon source added, compared with conservative silviculture. Our results were incremented with an extensive number of biotic and abiotic environmental variables that had contrasting effects on SMC, and there is no single factor, which alone can explain all the SMC responses. Our results seem to advocate dynamic silvicultural practices in oak forests to promote soil microbial activity. However, it remains to be seen what the long-term effects will be of the reduced abundance and functional diversity of SMCs observed jointly in low-SD.

    Vertical-flow wetland systems were tested for treatment of liquid waste activated sludge with high content of organic compounds from a soft drink factory. A mesocosm experiment was carried out on planted and unplanted systems to understand the relative importance of substrate and plants in purification processes and to compare three species: Phragmites australis Cav., Typha latifolia L., or Iris pseudacorus L. All planted mesocosms performed better than unplanted mesocosms and Phragmites showed the highest efficiencies, both in volumes and loads, closely followed by Typha. Removal efficiencies were very high in all cases, and physical filtration by the organic substrate was identified as the main processes for nutrient removal (>50%). We showed that plants played direct and indirect roles such as nutrients uptake (up to 23% of the N for Phragmites), evapotranspiration reducing outflow volumes; or improvement of filtration by the root systems and stimulation of microbial activities (respiration rate was double compared to unplanted mesocosms).

    Ensuring sustainable forest management while strengthening the competitiveness of the forest and woodproducts sector is a major challenge for the economic development of rural areas in the Center-Val de Loire region. Upstream actors in the sector face two challenges: first, harvesting more wood to meet the increasing demand for wood products and renewable energy without deteriorating the already poor soils predominant in the region's forests; and second, finding solutions to help forests adapt to climate change. In the PSDR DEFIFORBOIS project, researchers and actors from INRAE, ONF, FCBA, Fibois, CNPF and Unisylva have joined forces to carry out: i) a prospective analysis of the means required to ensure an increased harvest of forest resources for regional logging companies'; ii) a technical and environmental diagnosis of local whole-tree harvesting practices and their impact on soils and biodiversity so as to propose recommendations for sustainable fuelwood harvesting methods adapted to the regional context.

    Gérer durablement les forêts et renforcer la compétitivité de la filière forêt-bois sont des enjeux forts pour le développement économique des territoires ruraux de la région Centre-Val de Loire. Les acteurs amont de la filière doivent faire face à deux défis : mobiliser davantage de bois pour répondre à la demande croissante en matériaux biosourcés et en énergie renouvelable, sans altérer la fertilité des sols majoritairement pauvres, et trouver des solutions pour favoriser l’adaptation des peuplements au changement climatique. Des chercheurs et acteurs d’INRAE, de l’ONF, du FCBA, de Fibois Centre-Val de Loire, du CNPF et d’Unisylva se sont associés pour mener, dans le cadre du projet PSDR4 DEFIFORBOIS : i) une analyse prospective des moyens nécessaires aux entreprises régionalesd’exploitation forestière pour assurer la mobilisation accrue de bois, ii) un diagnostic technique et environnemental des pratiques locales de récolte du bois énergie par arbre entier et de leurs impacts sur les sols et la biodiversité pour proposer des recommandations adaptées au contexte régional, iii) une étude de la vulnérabilité des essences en place et l’identification d’essences nouvelles potentiellement mieux adaptées à tester en plantations comparatives iv) le test d’une pédagogie permettant d’aplanir lesinégalités d’acceptabilité sociale vis-à-vis des politiques et pratiques de transformation volontaire des forêts face au changement climatique.
