We present a dataset of flowering and maturity dates, recorded each year for one tree when available, or the average of several trees for each cultivar, over a period of 37 years (1978–2015). Such a dataset is extremely valuable for characterizing the phenological response to climate change, and the plasticity of the different cultivars’ behaviour under different environmental conditions. In addition, this dataset will support the development of predictive models for sweet cherry phenology exploitable at the continental scale, and will help anticipate breeding strategies in order to maintain and improve sweet cherry production in Europe.

The effect of a range of chilling temperatures on vegetative and reproductive bud dormancy progression in excised shoots was examined during two seasons. Temperature treatments were applied in different dormant stages to evaluate the possible interaction of date × temperature for dormancy release in apricot. During sampling, chill accumulated in the field ranged from 0 to 49 chill portions (CPs), corresponding to 0–100% of the chilling requirement (CR) of the apricot selection Z505‐2. Forcing conditions were applied after a 60‐day chill treatment on each sampling date, and rate to budbreak (1/mean time to bud break: MTB−1) was established in vegetative (terminal and lateral) and reproductive buds to determine depth of dormancy. Results showed that the stage of dormancy has a strong influence on the effect of different temperatures on dormancy progression in apricot. For the first time, a non‐linear effect of different chilling temperatures during the dormancy cycle in apricot was obtained, especially in the superior range of temperatures traditionally considered to release dormancy. Thus, introduction of this differential effect could help to improve the models to estimate dormancy release in the context of climate change.

In addition, in a climate change context, a precise knowledge of these requirements and their effect on productivity is critical for choosing the best suited cultivars to assure long-term adaptation under low-chill environments. To date most studies circumvented the analysis of productivity when assessing chilling requirements in different climatic conditions. Thus, the chilling and heat requirements of different sweet cherry cultivars (Prunus avium L.) for breaking dormancy, flowering and fruit set were investigated in two contrasted growing areas in Tunisia: Ain-Drahem (800 m above sea level) and Tibar (328 m above sea level). Additionally, we evaluated several parameters to assess the productivity under these two different conditions. Low chill cultivars showed a higher fruit set in both locations suggesting a better adaption to warm-winter conditions. This three-year study establishes the basis of sweet cherry adaptation under two contrasted locations in Northern Africa.

At the European scale, in the context of the COST Action 1104 (2012-2016; https://www.bordeaux.inra.fr/cherry/), flowering and maturity dates were collected from 14 sites. Recorded years span is 1978 - 2015. Metadata are included in the dataset as a separate spreadsheet.

Changes in thermal and hydric patterns affect crop growth. This research is aimed to assess temporal and spatial trends of 18 climatic and agro-climatic thermal and hydric indices in the north of Argentine Patagonia (39°–44°, south latitude), to establish the current and potential suitability of this region for agriculture in a context of climate change. The period of study was 1970–2016, and it was focused on the last 20 years. Regional warming was indicated by the average increases of annual mean temperature (+ 0.2 °C decade−1), mean maximum temperature of the warm trimester (+ 0.3 °C decade−1), and extreme maximum temperature of the warmest month (+ 0.6 °C decade−1) during 1970–2016. This trend was also found in the 1996–2017 period. Mean minimum temperature of the cold trimester showed an uneven spatial and temporal trend, with increasing temperatures during 1970–2016 (+ 0.1 °C decade−1), but a negative trend (− 0.1 °C decade−1) over the last 20 years, which leads to an increasing regional trend in temperature amplitude. Negative trends in extreme minimum temperatures of April (− 0.3 °C decade−1), July and October (− 0.2 °C decade−1) imply more significant risks of cold damage for crops that exhibit sensitive phenological stages during this time. Thermal agro-climatic indices showed negative trends in winter chill (− 15.8 chill hours decade−1 considering the Weinberger method and − 20.8 chill hours decade−1 using Sharpe method) and higher accumulation of warm semester growing degree days (+ 38.8 GDD5 °C and + 32.3 GDD10 °C decade−1). Climatic and agro-climatic water indices showed that most of the region experienced decreasing water availability, mainly in the central-south and Andean subregions, showing annual precipitation trends of − 11.5 and − 31.2 mm decade−1, respectively). If these thermal and hydric trends are maintained in the future, the region will evolve into an area of greater energetic availability but with some restrictions: lower winter chill that would affect very high-chill cultivars cultivated in the warmest regions, higher risk of extreme thermal events during crucial phenological periods of specific crops, and decreasing water availability that would mainly affect dryland farming and river basin recharge. Traditional methods for calculating CR use climate controlled chambers and define CR using a fixed budburst percentage, usually close to 50% (CR-50%), without considering the productivity level associated to this percentage. This CR-50% definition may underestimate the real CR of tree crops for optimal productivity. This underestimation is particularly important to consider as winter chill accumulation is declining in many regions due to climate change. In this work we used sweet cherry to analyse the traditional method for calculating CR in many Rosaceae species (CR-50%) and compared the results with more a restrictive, productivity focused method, with CR defined with a 90% bud break level (90%, CRm-90%) close to the optimal budburst which assures productivity. Climate projections of winter chill suitability across Europe using CR-50% and CRm-90% were calculated. Regional suitability landscape was highly dependent on the method used to define CR and differences were found for a wide area of the European geography, both cold and mild winter areas. Our results suggest a need to use an optimal budburst level for the assessment of CR for sweet cherry. The use of traditional methods to determine CR can result in an underestimation of productivity CR with negative consequences for the fruit industry, particularly as climate change advances.

Elucidation of the genetic determinism of flowering traits is crucial to anticipate the increasing of ecological misalignment of adaptative traits with novel climate conditions in most temperate‐fruit species. CR and HR were evaluated over 3 yr and FD over 5 yr in an intraspecific sweet cherry (Prunus avium) F1 progeny, and FD over 6 yr in a different F1 progeny. One quantitative trait locus (QTL) with major effect and high stability between years of evaluation was detected for CR and FD in the same region of linkage group (LG) 4. For HR, no stable QTL was detected. Candidate genes underlying the major QTL on LG4 were investigated and key genes were identified for CR and FD. Phenotypic dissection of FD and year repetitions allowed us to identify CR as the high heritable component of FD and a high genotype × environment interaction for HR. QTLs for CR reported in this study are the first described in this species. Our results provide a foundation for the identification of genes involved in CR and FD in sweet cherry which could be used to develop ideotypes adapted to future climatic conditions.

We present a dataset of flowering and maturity dates, recorded each year for one tree when available, or the average of several trees for each cultivar, over a period of 37 years (1978–2015). Such a dataset is extremely valuable for characterizing the phenological response to climate change, and the plasticity of the different cultivars’ behaviour under different environmental conditions. In addition, this dataset will support the development of predictive models for sweet cherry phenology exploitable at the continental scale, and will help anticipate breeding strategies in order to maintain and improve sweet cherry production in Europe.

The effect of a range of chilling temperatures on vegetative and reproductive bud dormancy progression in excised shoots was examined during two seasons. Temperature treatments were applied in different dormant stages to evaluate the possible interaction of date × temperature for dormancy release in apricot. During sampling, chill accumulated in the field ranged from 0 to 49 chill portions (CPs), corresponding to 0–100% of the chilling requirement (CR) of the apricot selection Z505‐2. Forcing conditions were applied after a 60‐day chill treatment on each sampling date, and rate to budbreak (1/mean time to bud break: MTB−1) was established in vegetative (terminal and lateral) and reproductive buds to determine depth of dormancy. Results showed that the stage of dormancy has a strong influence on the effect of different temperatures on dormancy progression in apricot. For the first time, a non‐linear effect of different chilling temperatures during the dormancy cycle in apricot was obtained, especially in the superior range of temperatures traditionally considered to release dormancy. Thus, introduction of this differential effect could help to improve the models to estimate dormancy release in the context of climate change.

To date most studies circumvented the analysis of productivity when assessing chilling requirements in different climatic conditions. Thus, the chilling and heat requirements of different sweet cherry cultivars (Prunus avium L.) for breaking dormancy, flowering and fruit set were investigated in two contrasted growing areas in Tunisia: Ain-Drahem (800 m above sea level) and Tibar (328 m above sea level). Additionally, we evaluated several parameters to assess the productivity under these two different conditions. Low chill cultivars showed a higher fruit set in both locations suggesting a better adaption to warm-winter conditions. This three-year study establishes the basis of sweet cherry adaptation under two contrasted locations in Northern Africa.

Changes in thermal and hydric patterns affect crop growth. This research is aimed to assess temporal and spatial trends of 18 climatic and agro-climatic thermal and hydric indices in the north of Argentine Patagonia (39°–44°, south latitude), to establish the current and potential suitability of this region for agriculture in a context of climate change. The period of study was 1970–2016, and it was focused on the last 20 years. Regional warming was indicated by the average increases of annual mean temperature (+ 0.2 °C decade−1), mean maximum temperature of the warm trimester (+ 0.3 °C decade−1), and extreme maximum temperature of the warmest month (+ 0.6 °C decade−1) during 1970–2016. This trend was also found in the 1996–2017 period. Mean minimum temperature of the cold trimester showed an uneven spatial and temporal trend, with increasing temperatures during 1970–2016 (+ 0.1 °C decade−1), but a negative trend (− 0.1 °C decade−1) over the last 20 years, which leads to an increasing regional trend in temperature amplitude. Negative trends in extreme minimum temperatures of April (− 0.3 °C decade−1), July and October (− 0.2 °C decade−1) imply more significant risks of cold damage for crops that exhibit sensitive phenological stages during this time. Thermal agro-climatic indices showed negative trends in winter chill (− 15.8 chill hours decade−1 considering the Weinberger method and − 20.8 chill hours decade−1 using Sharpe method) and higher accumulation of warm semester growing degree days (+ 38.8 GDD5 °C and + 32.3 GDD10 °C decade−1). Climatic and agro-climatic water indices showed that most of the region experienced decreasing water availability, mainly in the central-south and Andean subregions, showing annual precipitation trends of − 11.5 and − 31.2 mm decade−1, respectively). If these thermal and hydric trends are maintained in the future, the region will evolve into an area of greater energetic availability but with some restrictions: lower winter chill that would affect very high-chill cultivars cultivated in the warmest regions, higher risk of extreme thermal events during crucial phenological periods of specific crops, and decreasing water availability that would mainly affect dryland farming and river basin recharge. Traditional methods for calculating CR use climate controlled chambers and define CR using a fixed budburst percentage, usually close to 50% (CR-50%), without considering the productivity level associated to this percentage. This CR-50% definition may underestimate the real CR of tree crops for optimal productivity. This underestimation is particularly important to consider as winter chill accumulation is declining in many regions due to climate change. In this work we used sweet cherry to analyse the traditional method for calculating CR in many Rosaceae species (CR-50%) and compared the results with more a restrictive, productivity focused method, with CR defined with a 90% bud break level (90%, CRm-90%) close to the optimal budburst which assures productivity. Climate projections of winter chill suitability across Europe using CR-50% and CRm-90% were calculated. Regional suitability landscape was highly dependent on the method used to define CR and differences were found for a wide area of the European geography, both cold and mild winter areas. Our results suggest a need to use an optimal budburst level for the assessment of CR for sweet cherry. The use of traditional methods to determine CR can result in an underestimation of productivity CR with negative consequences for the fruit industry, particularly as climate change advances.

Elucidation of the genetic determinism of flowering traits is crucial to anticipate the increasing of ecological misalignment of adaptative traits with novel climate conditions in most temperate‐fruit species. CR and HR were evaluated over 3 yr and FD over 5 yr in an intraspecific sweet cherry (Prunus avium) F1 progeny, and FD over 6 yr in a different F1 progeny. One quantitative trait locus (QTL) with major effect and high stability between years of evaluation was detected for CR and FD in the same region of linkage group (LG) 4. For HR, no stable QTL was detected. Candidate genes underlying the major QTL on LG4 were investigated and key genes were identified for CR and FD. Phenotypic dissection of FD and year repetitions allowed us to identify CR as the high heritable component of FD and a high genotype × environment interaction for HR. QTLs for CR reported in this study are the first described in this species. Our results provide a foundation for the identification of genes involved in CR and FD in sweet cherry which could be used to develop ideotypes adapted to future climatic conditions.
