This paper presents the preliminary results of a cultural and social acceptability assessment of geothermal energy exploitation in southern Italy; this research was carried out in the frame of the national project 'VIGOR' led by CNR (Italian National Research Council) and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to investigate the potentials of geothermal energy exploitation in southern Italy. The research was designed asa case study and carried out in the province of Palermo, Sicily, where CNR has conducted geological prospecting in order to establish the geothermal potential in the area of Termini Imerese. The area of Termini Imerese was selected as case study as a step towards designing approaches for "upstream" public engagement, i.e. engaging citizens in the early steps of eventual technology developments that impact their daily life. The case study has two basic components: (1) Focus Groups were conducted with four different groups of citizens and stakeholders from the selected area; (2) a Survey with a sample of 400 citizens calibrated by gender, age, education and residence was carried out in the province of Palermo. Energy issues are clearly perceived as very politicized at the moment and major concerns rise from lack of confidence towards politicians, energy companies and institutions in general, to adequately manage innovation processes in the energy sector in general. Our tentative conclusions are that there is considerable openness and interest in geothermal power but there is still quite a lot of work on societal dialogue to be done to accommodate public concerns, reduce uncertainties and set the eventual development of geothermal energy exploitation on a socially and culturally sustainable path.

Botteghi; Marco Bonini; Roberto de Franco; Alessandro Santilano;In the frame of the Integrated Method for Advanced Geothermal Exploration (IMAGE) Project, a reliable exploration and resource assessment workflow was implemented on the basis of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach. Our study addressed to a better understanding of the thermal structure of the deepest part of the Larderello geothermal field (Southern Tuscany, Italy) by integrating structural, geological, geochemical, geochronological, petrological and geophysical data. With the aim to characterize the reservoir located nearby an important seismic reflector (the K-horizon), we systematized the available data and, successively, we applied a numerical thermal modelling approach to test our hypotheses and concepts.

This paper presents the results of an assessment of public views on eventual geothermal energy development in Sicily. The research was carried out under a much wider research project, VIGOR, with the aim to explore the feasibility of geothermal energy utilization in southern Italy. This study has two primary objectives: (1) to explore the views and opinions of local communities regarding the potential of geothermal energy applications; (2) to contribute to the growing literature on public engagement with energy issues. In order to explore public views towards geothermal technologies, we conducted a case study using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Although Italy has enormous geological potential for geothermal energy production, levels of knowledge of this energy source amongst the public are low. The results indicate that the issue is shrouded in uncertainty and that the Sicilian public expresses a diffused lack of trust in decision-making processes. Taken together, these factors are likely to strongly impact eventual further developments in this sector. The results clearly show the need for further societal dialogue supported by a sound communication action strategy as the first stage in a public participation.

Although the geology of Italy offers substantial geothermal resources the opportunities for energy production are underexploited and the potential of such resources is almost unknown to the general public. In order to study the societal context of geothermal energy the Italian National Research Council conducted two homogenous case studies that were part of two broader national research projects that aim to assess the potential of eventual geothermal development in Italy: (1) the VIGOR project and the (2) ATLANTE Geotermico del Mezzogiorno project. The former was carried out in Palermo (southern Italy) and the latter in Viterbo (central Italy). The two studies used both qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (survey) research methods. In this paper we present a comparative analysis of the two case studies. In both case studies we found that energy questions are perceived as very politicized at the moment and even if there is a considerable openness towards geothermal technologies, the lack of trust in the decision makers can prepare the ground for important social conflicts. Concerns and the support for geothermal technologies are strongly related to the local context and past experiences. Although the results show some similarities between Viterbo and Palermo, the views of the participants were clearly shaped by local contextual factors that need to be taken into account when designing eventual developments. Palermo participants place much emphasis on eventual employment opportunities opened by innovation and regarded local corruption as an important obstacle, while in Viterbo people are particularly sensitive to water pollution and framed discussions about geothermal resources in terms of local experiences in this regard. Lack of credible information is also a key issue of both case studies. Participants in the studies welcomed the opportunity to be consulted on these issues and called for greater efforts in communication to facilitate further public engagement. Out of a range actors and stakeholders scientists and researchers are expected to play a major role as they are perceived as most trustworthy.

In both case studies we found that energy questions are perceived as very politicized at the moment and even if there is a considerable openness towards geothermal technologies, the lack of trust in the decision makers can prepare the ground for important social conflicts. Concerns and the support for geothermal technologies are strongly related to the local context and past experiences. Although the results show some similarities between Viterbo and Palermo, the views of the participants were clearly shaped by local contextual factors that need to be taken into account when designing eventual developments. Palermo participants place much emphasis on eventual employment opportunities opened by innovation and regarded local corruption as an important obstacle, while in Viterbo people are particularly sensitive to water pollution and framed discussions about geothermal resources in terms of local experiences in this regard. Lack of credible information is also a key issue of both case studies. Participants in the studies welcomed the opportunity to be consulted on these issues and called for greater efforts in communication to facilitate further public engagement. Out of a range actors and stakeholders scientists and researchers are expected to play a major role as they are perceived as most trustworthy.

Although Italy has any possible reason to be considered a geothermal country, there appears to be little knowledge or understanding of the potentials of this energy source and its implications for the general society. This paper presents the results of a cultural and social acceptability assessment of geothermal energy exploitation in southern Italy (Palermo, Sicily). This study had two primary objectives: (1) to explore the views and opinions of local communities regarding the potential and real exploitation of geothermal energy; and (2) to contribute to the growing scientific and social-scientific literature of the social acceptance of geothermal energy. To explore attitudes and public views towards geothermal energy technologies, we performed a case study using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. Our case study has two basic components: (1) Focus Group studies were conducted on four different groups of citizens and stakeholders from the selected area. (2) A survey was conducted on a sample of 400 citizens calibrated by gender, age, education, job condition, and residence. The results show that a public dialogue on geothermal energy exploitation should be based on and accompanied by a communication action strategy.

This paper reports on a case study on the citizens' engagement with developments towards the harnessing of geothermal energy in central Italy. The research has been conducted within the framework of a larger project on the feasibility of further geothermal developments in Italy, funded by the Italian government. The aims of the case study research were first to explore the role of public and stakeholder engagement in the processes of innovation in the geothermal energy sector. Second, to design, implement and consolidate a methodological framework for comparative analysis of case studies on citizens' engagement, thus bringing a social scientific perspective into geothermal energy research. The results show general support for renewable energy but knowledge and understanding of the potential of geothermal is remarkably low. Lack of trust in politics and unsure public communication emerged as prominent themes where the common good and community developments are sharply contrasted with corporate and private interests. As geothermal energy is included and encouraged under the European Strategic Energy Plan and in the Paris agreement on halting climate change, the results can make significant input into future policy making, by providing concrete guidelines on citizens' engagement in processes of culturally sustainable innovation.

This paper presents the preliminary results of a cultural and social acceptability assessment of geothermal energy exploitation in southern Italy; this research was carried out in the frame of the national project 'VIGOR' led by CNR (Italian National Research Council) and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to investigate the potentials of geothermal energy exploitation in southern Italy. The research was designed asa case study and carried out in the province of Palermo, Sicily, where CNR has conducted geological prospecting in order to establish the geothermal potential in the area of Termini Imerese. The area of Termini Imerese was selected as case study as a step towards designing approaches for "upstream" public engagement, i.e. engaging citizens in the early steps of eventual technology developments that impact their daily life. The case study has two basic components: (1) Focus Groups were conducted with four different groups of citizens and stakeholders from the selected area; (2) a Survey with a sample of 400 citizens calibrated by gender, age, education and residence was carried out in the province of Palermo. Energy issues are clearly perceived as very politicized at the moment and major concerns rise from lack of confidence towards politicians, energy companies and institutions in general, to adequately manage innovation processes in the energy sector in general. Our tentative conclusions are that there is considerable openness and interest in geothermal power but there is still quite a lot of work on societal dialogue to be done to accommodate public concerns, reduce uncertainties and set the eventual development of geothermal energy exploitation on a socially and culturally sustainable path.

Our study addressed to a better understanding of the thermal structure of the deepest part of the Larderello geothermal field (Southern Tuscany, Italy) by integrating structural, geological, geochemical, geochronological, petrological and geophysical data. With the aim to characterize the reservoir located nearby an important seismic reflector (the K-horizon), we systematized the available data and, successively, we applied a numerical thermal modelling approach to test our hypotheses and concepts.

Our study addressed to a better understanding of the thermal structure of the deepest part of the Larderello geothermal field (Southern Tuscany, Italy) by integrating structural, geological, geochemical, geochronological, petrological and geophysical data. With the aim to characterize the reservoir located nearby an important seismic reflector (the K-horizon), we systematized the available data and, successively, we applied a numerical thermal modelling approach to test our hypotheses and concepts.

This paper presents the results of an assessment of public views on eventual geothermal energy development in Sicily. The research was carried out under a much wider research project, VIGOR, with the aim to explore the feasibility of geothermal energy utilization in southern Italy. This study has two primary objectives: (1) to explore the views and opinions of local communities regarding the potential of geothermal energy applications; (2) to contribute to the growing literature on public engagement with energy issues. In order to explore public views towards geothermal technologies, we conducted a case study using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Although Italy has enormous geological potential for geothermal energy production, levels of knowledge of this energy source amongst the public are low. The results indicate that the issue is shrouded in uncertainty and that the Sicilian public expresses a diffused lack of trust in decision-making processes. Taken together, these factors are likely to strongly impact eventual further developments in this sector. The results clearly show the need for further societal dialogue supported by a sound communication action strategy as the first stage in a public participation.

Although the geology of Italy offers substantial geothermal resources the opportunities for energy production are underexploited and the potential of such resources is almost unknown to the general public. In order to study the societal context of geothermal energy the Italian National Research Council conducted two homogenous case studies that were part of two broader national research projects that aim to assess the potential of eventual geothermal development in Italy: (1) the VIGOR project and the (2) ATLANTE Geotermico del Mezzogiorno project. The former was carried out in Palermo (southern Italy) and the latter in Viterbo (central Italy). The two studies used both qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (survey) research methods. In this paper we present a comparative analysis of the two case studies. In both case studies we found that energy questions are perceived as very politicized at the moment and even if there is a considerable openness towards geothermal technologies, the lack of trust in the decision makers can prepare the ground for important social conflicts. Concerns and the support for geothermal technologies are strongly related to the local context and past experiences. Although the results show some similarities between Viterbo and Palermo, the views of the participants were clearly shaped by local contextual factors that need to be taken into account when designing eventual developments. Palermo participants place much emphasis on eventual employment opportunities opened by innovation and regarded local corruption as an important obstacle, while in Viterbo people are particularly sensitive to water pollution and framed discussions about geothermal resources in terms of local experiences in this regard. Lack of credible information is also a key issue of both case studies. Participants in the studies welcomed the opportunity to be consulted on these issues and called for greater efforts in communication to facilitate further public engagement. Out of a range actors and stakeholders scientists and researchers are expected to play a major role as they are perceived as most trustworthy.

This paper reports on a case study on the citizens' engagement with developments towards the harnessing of geothermal energy in central Italy. The research has been conducted within the framework of a larger project on the feasibility of further geothermal developments in Italy, funded by the Italian government. The aims of the case study research were first to explore the role of public and stakeholder engagement in the processes of innovation in the geothermal energy sector. Second, to design, implement and consolidate a methodological framework for comparative analysis of case studies on citizens' engagement, thus bringing a social scientific perspective into geothermal energy research. The results show general support for renewable energy but knowledge and understanding of the potential of geothermal is remarkably low. Lack of trust in politics and unsure public communication emerged as prominent themes where the common good and community developments are sharply contrasted with corporate and private interests. As geothermal energy is included and encouraged under the European Strategic Energy Plan and in the Paris agreement on halting climate change, the results can make significant input into future policy making, by providing concrete guidelines on citizens' engagement in processes of culturally sustainable innovation.
