The possibility of electric vehicles to technically replace internal combustion engine vehicles and to deliver economic benefits mainly depends on the battery and the charging infrastructure as well as on annual mileage (utilizing the lower variable costs of electric vehicles). Current studies on electric vehicles’ total cost of ownership often neglect two important factors that influence the investment decision and operational costs: firstly, the trade-off between battery and charging capacity; secondly the uncertainty in energy consumption. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic program that minimizes the total cost of ownership of a commercial electric vehicle under uncertain energy consumption and available charging times induced by mobility patterns and outside temperature. The optimization program is solved by sample average approximation based on mobility and temperature scenarios. A hidden Markov model is introduced to predict mobility demand scenarios. Three scenario reduction heuristics are applied to reduce computational effort while keeping a high-quality approximation. The proposed framework is tested in a case study of the home nursing service. The results show the large influence of the uncertain mobility patterns on the optimal solution. In the case study, the total cost of ownership can be reduced by up to 3.9% by including the trade-off between battery and charging capacity. The introduction of variable energy prices can lower energy costs by 31.6% but does not influence the investment decision in this case study. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for real applications to determine the techno-economic optimal electric vehicle and charging infrastructure configuration.

Gómez Vilchez; Axel Ensslen; Johannes Schäuble; Wolf Fichtner;Current car technologies will not solve upcoming challenges of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in road transport. Projections of the market penetration by alternative drive train technologies are controversial regarding both forecast market shares and applied scientific methods. Accepting this latter challenge, we provide a (so far missing) overview of methods applied in this field and give some recommendations for further work. Our focus is to classify the applied methods into a convenient pattern and to analyse models from the recent scientific literature which consider the electrification of light-duty vehicles. We differentiate the following bottom-up approaches: Econometric models with disaggregated data (such as discrete choice), and agent-based simulation models. The group of top-down models are subdivided into econometric models with aggregated data (e.g. vehicle stock data), system dynamics, as well as integrated assessment models with general equilibrium models. It becomes obvious that some methods have a stronger methodological background whereas others require comprehensive data sets or can be combined more flexibly with other methods. Even though there is no dominant method, we can identify a trend in the literature towards data-driven hybrid approaches, which considers micro and macro aspects influencing the market penetration of electric vehicles.

Energy researchers rely on quantitative modeling approaches to address these challenges. At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, we have developed several models to analyze today's and the future's energy markets to address the challenges for electricity networks as a result of intermittent renewable and decentralized power and heat supply and to find solutions for integrating demand response. This paper presents a survey of these approaches and discusses further challenges. The developed models have proved to be suitable for answering a range of research questions related to structural changes. As the energy sector remains in a constant state of flux, these models need to be further developed. This means coupling different energy sectors and markets and improving their technical accuracy as well as their spatial and temporal resolutions.

Especially modulating heat pumps are suitable for using intelligent control strategies that vary the pumps’ power output based on demand response signals. In this paper, we define optimization problems for minimizing the heating costs and the surplus energy of a residential area, and we introduce novel heuristic control strategies for modulating heat pumps to solve these problems. The heuristic control strategies make use of a privacy preserving control and communication architecture that combines central and decentralized control approaches. All buildings use an underfloor heating system and a domestic hot water tank as thermal storages. Compared to a conventional control strategy, the results show average cost reductions of between 4.1% and 13.3% for the cost minimization heuristics, and average improvements of between 38.3% and 52.6% for the surplus energy minimization heuristic. Contrary to approaches for finding the globally optimal solution, the introduced heuristic control strategies have significantly lower computational times and do not require perfect foresight regarding future demands and electricity generation.

However, there are still significant technological limitations that need to be taken into consideration. This study presents and discusses five different charging strategies for two mobility applications executed during an early stage long-term field test from 2013 to 2015 in Germany, which main objective was to increase the utilization within the existing technological restrictions. During the field test seven EV drove more than 450,000 km. For four out of five presented charging strategies the inclusion of DC fast charging is indispensable. Based on the empirical evidence five key performance indicators (KPI) are developed. These indicators give recommendations to economically deploy EV in commercial fleets. The results demonstrate that the more predictable the underlying mobility demand and the more technical information is available the better the charging strategies can be defined. Furthermore, the results indicate that a prudent mix of conventional and DC fast charging allows a high annual mileage while at the same time limiting avoidable harmful effects on the battery.

J.; Jochem, P.;Abstract While the market evolution of electric vehicles is uncertain, numerous studies have explored the future market diffusion of this and alternative powertrain technologies. This paper reviews studies that are based on system dynamics models and classifies this literature into ‘automotive industry-oriented’ and ‘public policy-oriented’. Our review shows that the models of most of these studies share basic properties by design, yet differ not only in purpose but also in the assumptions they adopt, particularly with regards to consumer choice of powertrains. Taken together, these diverse modelling exercises can be understood as a model library to gain insights into different key markets. In terms of the type of models examined, this paper also discusses some methodological issues and suggests future modelling developments. Further research needs include the interlinkage of models to better understand the evolution of the battery price.

In this paper, we investigate the potential benefits for French prosumers from providing DR to the capacity market and to a specific DR market, the Notifications d’Echange de Blocs d’Effacement (Demand Response Block Exchange Notifications–NEBEF). An optimization model is developed which would allow the prosumer to bid in the two markets. We consider the uncertainty affecting consumption and three retail rates. We also assess the impact of a compensation scheme for a balance-responsible party when DR is activated inside their balancing area. We show that DR volumes can represent about 20% of self-consumption but this falls to 6% due to uncertainty and payments compensating the supplier. Overall savings from self-consumption and the yield from DR are too low in France to cover the cost of investing in a BSS. A DR premium from 18.7 to 62 cts€/kWh is needed to reach the BSS break-even point. These numbers drop when considering time-of-use tariffs compared to a flat retail rate.

The possibility of electric vehicles to technically replace internal combustion engine vehicles and to deliver economic benefits mainly depends on the battery and the charging infrastructure as well as on annual mileage (utilizing the lower variable costs of electric vehicles). Current studies on electric vehicles’ total cost of ownership often neglect two important factors that influence the investment decision and operational costs: firstly, the trade-off between battery and charging capacity; secondly the uncertainty in energy consumption. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic program that minimizes the total cost of ownership of a commercial electric vehicle under uncertain energy consumption and available charging times induced by mobility patterns and outside temperature. The optimization program is solved by sample average approximation based on mobility and temperature scenarios. A hidden Markov model is introduced to predict mobility demand scenarios. Three scenario reduction heuristics are applied to reduce computational effort while keeping a high-quality approximation. The proposed framework is tested in a case study of the home nursing service. The results show the large influence of the uncertain mobility patterns on the optimal solution. In the case study, the total cost of ownership can be reduced by up to 3.9% by including the trade-off between battery and charging capacity. The introduction of variable energy prices can lower energy costs by 31.6% but does not influence the investment decision in this case study. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for real applications to determine the techno-economic optimal electric vehicle and charging infrastructure configuration.

Projections of the market penetration by alternative drive train technologies are controversial regarding both forecast market shares and applied scientific methods. Accepting this latter challenge, we provide a (so far missing) overview of methods applied in this field and give some recommendations for further work. Our focus is to classify the applied methods into a convenient pattern and to analyse models from the recent scientific literature which consider the electrification of light-duty vehicles. We differentiate the following bottom-up approaches: Econometric models with disaggregated data (such as discrete choice), and agent-based simulation models. The group of top-down models are subdivided into econometric models with aggregated data (e.g. vehicle stock data), system dynamics, as well as integrated assessment models with general equilibrium models. It becomes obvious that some methods have a stronger methodological background whereas others require comprehensive data sets or can be combined more flexibly with other methods. Even though there is no dominant method, we can identify a trend in the literature towards data-driven hybrid approaches, which considers micro and macro aspects influencing the market penetration of electric vehicles.

Energy researchers rely on quantitative modeling approaches to address these challenges. At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, we have developed several models to analyze today's and the future's energy markets to address the challenges for electricity networks as a result of intermittent renewable and decentralized power and heat supply and to find solutions for integrating demand response. This paper presents a survey of these approaches and discusses further challenges. The developed models have proved to be suitable for answering a range of research questions related to structural changes. As the energy sector remains in a constant state of flux, these models need to be further developed. This means coupling different energy sectors and markets and improving their technical accuracy as well as their spatial and temporal resolutions.

Especially modulating heat pumps are suitable for using intelligent control strategies that vary the pumps’ power output based on demand response signals. In this paper, we define optimization problems for minimizing the heating costs and the surplus energy of a residential area, and we introduce novel heuristic control strategies for modulating heat pumps to solve these problems. The heuristic control strategies make use of a privacy preserving control and communication architecture that combines central and decentralized control approaches. All buildings use an underfloor heating system and a domestic hot water tank as thermal storages. Compared to a conventional control strategy, the results show average cost reductions of between 4.1% and 13.3% for the cost minimization heuristics, and average improvements of between 38.3% and 52.6% for the surplus energy minimization heuristic. Contrary to approaches for finding the globally optimal solution, the introduced heuristic control strategies have significantly lower computational times and do not require perfect foresight regarding future demands and electricity generation.

However, there are still significant technological limitations that need to be taken into consideration. This study presents and discusses five different charging strategies for two mobility applications executed during an early stage long-term field test from 2013 to 2015 in Germany, which main objective was to increase the utilization within the existing technological restrictions. During the field test seven EV drove more than 450,000 km. For four out of five presented charging strategies the inclusion of DC fast charging is indispensable. Based on the empirical evidence five key performance indicators (KPI) are developed. These indicators give recommendations to economically deploy EV in commercial fleets. The results demonstrate that the more predictable the underlying mobility demand and the more technical information is available the better the charging strategies can be defined. Furthermore, the results indicate that a prudent mix of conventional and DC fast charging allows a high annual mileage while at the same time limiting avoidable harmful effects on the battery.

J.; Jochem, P.;Abstract While the market evolution of electric vehicles is uncertain, numerous studies have explored the future market diffusion of this and alternative powertrain technologies. This paper reviews studies that are based on system dynamics models and classifies this literature into ‘automotive industry-oriented’ and ‘public policy-oriented’. Our review shows that the models of most of these studies share basic properties by design, yet differ not only in purpose but also in the assumptions they adopt, particularly with regards to consumer choice of powertrains. Taken together, these diverse modelling exercises can be understood as a model library to gain insights into different key markets. In terms of the type of models examined, this paper also discusses some methodological issues and suggests future modelling developments. Further research needs include the interlinkage of models to better understand the evolution of the battery price.

In this paper, we investigate the potential benefits for French prosumers from providing DR to the capacity market and to a specific DR market, the Notifications d’Echange de Blocs d’Effacement (Demand Response Block Exchange Notifications–NEBEF). An optimization model is developed which would allow the prosumer to bid in the two markets. We consider the uncertainty affecting consumption and three retail rates. We also assess the impact of a compensation scheme for a balance-responsible party when DR is activated inside their balancing area. We show that DR volumes can represent about 20% of self-consumption but this falls to 6% due to uncertainty and payments compensating the supplier. Overall savings from self-consumption and the yield from DR are too low in France to cover the cost of investing in a BSS. A DR premium from 18.7 to 62 cts€/kWh is needed to reach the BSS break-even point. These numbers drop when considering time-of-use tariffs compared to a flat retail rate.
