This paper proposes the use of batteries that have already been aged while powering electric vehicles, during their main first life application, for providing residential demand response service. The paper considers the decayed characteristics of these batteries and optimizes the rating of such a second life battery energy storage system (SLBESS) for maximizing the economic benefits of the user's energy consumption during a period of one year. Furthermore, simulations were performed considering real data of PV generation, consumption, prices taken from the Spanish market and costs of battery and photovoltaic systems.

A hybrid health monitoring system for wind turbine generators is introduced. The novelty of this research consists in approaching a 115-wind turbine fleet by using the fusion of multiple sources of information. Analog SCADA data is analyzed through an autoencoder which allows to identify anomalous patterns within the input variables. Alarm logs are processed and merged to the anomaly detection output, creating a reliable health estimator of generator conditions. The proposed methodology has been tested on a fleet of 115 wind turbines from four different manufacturers located in various locations around Europe. The solution has been compared with other existing data modeling techniques offering impressive results on the fleet. An accuracy of 82% and a Kappa of 56% were obtained. The detailed methodology is presented using one of the available windfarms, composed of 13 onshore wind turbines rated 2 MW power. The rigorous evaluation of the results, the utilization of real data and the heterogeneity of the dataset prove the validity of the system and its applicability in an online operating scenario.

The response of this power system to realistic disturbances is compared with the case where the PV unit is controlled to provide its maximum power production regardless of the state of the system. Due to the size of these plants, they must provide support services for the grid and it is necessary to analyze the impact they have on power systems. Opposing to conventional power plants formed by a reduced number of synchronous generators in the range of several hundreds of megawatts, large power plants based on PV and wind energy are usually composed of a high number of individual generating units with power ratings of a few megawatts. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop aggregated models of power plants formed by multiple power converters to be used in the dynamic analysis of large power systems. This paper presents the control system of a 20 MW PV plant, derives an equivalent aggregated model and studies the performance of this model through simulation. Peer Reviewed

This paper presents two simulation models: a PV system model using the single-diode four-parameter model based on data sheet values and a Vanadium Redox Battery (VRB) system model based on the efficiency of different components and the power losses. The unit models were implemented first in MATLAB/Simulink and the simulation results have been compared with the data sheet values and with the characteristics of the units. To point out the strong dependency on ambient conditions and to validate the simulation models a complex data processing subsystem model has also been developed. A PV and a VRB inverter models have also been developed and implemented in PowerFactory to study load flow, steady-state voltage stability and dynamic behavior of a distribution system.

One of the major issues associated with the implementation of direct-current distribution systems is the design of a proper protection scheme. The fault current characteristics in direct-current distribution systems are quite different than those in conventional alternating-current grids. Thus, the performance of conventional protection schemes can adversely be affected, and it is necessary to modify the con-ventional protection schemes or design new protection methods for direct-current networks. This paper proposes a multi-zone differential protection scheme for direct-current distribution systems embedding distributed generators. The proposed method provides a selective and fast protection through the use of a communication link between two sides of a protected feeder. Moreover, the method provides a differential-based backup for the adjacent relays, which can enhance the protection system reliability. In addition, the method proposed in this paper also utilizes directional over-current elements to provide backup protection if the communication network fails. The effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme is evaluated through comprehensive hardware-in-the-loop simulation studies to obtain more realistic results and to investigate the impact of the communication delay. The results show that the proposed method can provide a selective and fast protection and effectively protect components of direct-current distribution systems against different types of faults. Electric structures of these configurations are considered, in the case of constant or variable speed squirrel cage and permanent magnet rotor of the three phase machines with single-phase output. The paper is focused on the study of the two stator windings permanent magnet synchronous three phase generators with a single-phase output configuration. A simulation schema is presented, as well as some simulation results. The phasor diagram is obtained on the base of the simulation results, from which the generator steady-state phasor model is achieved, that permits to study any steady-state operation regime.

Therefore, their control systems are acquiring growing importance, with new proposals that aim to contribute to the control and stability of the power system as conventional generating units. This paper studies the effect that a PV system using a synchronous power controller may have on a small power system constituted by a diesel generator, two loads and the PV generating unit. The response of this power system to realistic disturbances is compared with the case where the PV unit is controlled to provide its maximum power production regardless of the state of the system.
