Z. Zundel in OpenAIREAbstract We report on a measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum by the Telescope Array Low-Energy Extension (TALE) air fluorescence detector (FD). The TALE air FD is also sensitive to the Cherenkov light produced by shower particles. Low-energy cosmic rays, in the PeV energy range, are detectable by TALE as Cherenkov events. Using these events, we measure the energy spectrum from a low energy of ∼2 PeV to an energy greater than 100 PeV. Above 100 PeV, TALE can detect cosmic rays using air fluorescence. This allows for the extension of the measurement to energies greater than a few EeV. In this paper, we describe the detector, explain the technique, and present results from a measurement of the spectrum using ∼1000 hr of observation. The observed spectrum shows a clear steepening near 1017.1 eV, along with an ankle-like structure at 1016.2 eV. These features present important constraints on the origin of galactic cosmic rays and on propagation models. The feature at 1017.1 eV may also mark the end of the galactic cosmic ray flux and the start of the transition to extragalactic sources.

R. Sarmento in OpenAIREWe present a search for ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such particles, possibly a relic of phase transitions in the early universe, would deposit a large amount of energy along their path through the atmosphere, comparable to that of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The air shower profile of a magnetic monopole can be effectively distinguished by the fluorescence detector from that of standard UHECRs. No candidate was found in the data collected between 2004 and 2012, with an expected background of less than 0.1 event from UHECRs. The corresponding 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the flux of ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles range from $10^{-19}$ (cm$^{2}$ sr s)$^{-1}$ for a Lorentz factor $��=10^9$ to $2.5 \times10^{-21}$ (cm$^{2}$ sr s)$^{-1}$ for $��=10^{12}$. These results - the first obtained with a UHECR detector - improve previously published limits by up to an order of magnitude. Published version. Corrected title. Added journal reference and DOI. C.;Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1σ, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. With a comparable exposure, our results in those regions are in good agreement with the expectations from an isotropic distribution. submitted to ApJ

Salamida, Francesco in OpenAIREWe introduce the new version of SimProp, a Monte Carlo code for simulating the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in intergalactic space. This version, SimProp v2r4, together with an overall improvement of the code capabilities with a substantial reduction in the computation time, also computes secondary cosmogenic particles such as electron-positron pairs and gamma rays produced during the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. As recently pointed out by several authors, the flux of this secondary radiation and its products, within reach of the current observatories, provides useful information about models of ultra-high energy cosmic ray sources which would be hard to discriminate otherwise. 22 pages (excluding title), 3 figures, 4 tables; contents match published version except for changes introduced by JCAP typesetter. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1602.01239

Keilhauer, B. in OpenAIREUltra-high energy cosmic rays represent the most energetic particles available to scientists. These particles have macroscopic energies, exceeding 1 EeV,but their detectionisa challenge, their flux beingvery weak, around one particle per square kilometer per century for the highest energies. The Pierre Auger Observatory, in Argentina, is the present flagship experiment studying ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The combination of a large array of surface detectors covering 3000 km2 and fluorescence telescopes enhances the performances of the extensive air shower detection and measurements, resulting in both high statistics and unprecedented data quality. Moreover, the operation of a denser sub-array has extended the sensitivity to lower energies. Altogether, these well performing detectors contribute to providing important information on key questions on cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.1 EeV up to 100 EeV, as highlighted in this presentation of the latest results obtained by the Pierre Auger Collaboration. Despite a large number of valuable results, the understanding of the nature and the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays remains an open science case that the Auger Collaboration is willing to address with the AugerPrime project.
