For this purpose we take advantage of a daily dataset of prices fixed by gas stations in two Spanish reg ions. It is consistently found that retail price dispersion is temporarily enlarged as a consequence of wholesale price increases, while it is reduced due to decreases. The presence of asymmetries in the short - run dynamics is also revealed. T he impact of p ositive changes in the wholesale price is, in the first days of adjustment, clearly greater. The dynamics pattern could be explained, at least in part, by the faster response of prices in the stations associated with the two vertically integrated companies that have the largest market share (i.e. Repsol and Cepsa).

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2020 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Balaguer, Jacint; Ripollés, Jordi;Despite the relatively large number of gas stations reached in Spain after decades of sectorial reforms, pre-tax fuel prices in the country remain systematically among the highest in the EU. The literature provides evidence suggesting that a low intensity of competition in the retail distribution could contribute to these casual observations. With the purpose of shedding light on ways to design e↵ective competition measures, we conduct an empirical analysis of more than ten million observations containing information about prices, brands, and locations at the station level. This allows us to know whether the exit (entry) of some classes of stations have the ability to reduce the prices of nearby competitors. Our results suggest that the presence in a local market of a station belonging to the network of the dominant market companies will tend to generate prices above the average. This is not only because these stations set higher prices but also because their presence will give rise to overpricing by local competitors. The opposite occurs with the self-advertised as “low-cost” stations. Policy measures promoting the gradual exit of stations associated with the dominant companies seem quite reasonable in view of the commitment to the transition toward transport decarbonization.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2021 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Balaguer, Jacint; Ripollés, Jordi;Although multimarket competition is a fairly common characteristic in the retail fuel industry, its effect on the corresponding prices remains unexplored. By using a large dataset of service stations in Spain, a first set of empirical results for this industry is provided. It is consistently found that multimarket contact among chain stations increases prices, which adds support to the classical mutual forbearance hypothesis. However, it is further revealed that such an effect is critically dependent on the degree of concentration of each local market. Since the impact becomes more relevant in markets where concentration is lower, it also seems advisable to closely monitor these cases. Findings also suggest that, in those models where multimarket contact information is ignored, the specific effect of local concentration on prices could be significantly underestimated.

The Spanish Stabilization and Liberalization Plan of 1959 is regarded as a “natural experiment” that is especially interesting for our purposes. To explore long-run causality and possible changes in its direction, we have exploited statistical information for a long period (1900-2008). We applied a movingwindow regression procedure based on the augmented vector autoregressive methodology of Toda and Yamamoto (1995). Causality results are highly sensitive to the industrialization process. For the sub-period preceding the development policy we consistently found greater support for the “conservation hypothesis”. This contrasts sharply with the set of results from the data belonging to the subsequent sub-period, where evidence is in favor of the “growth hypothesis”. Financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (ECO2011-28155) and the Generalitat Valenciana (VALI+D, ACIF/2010) are gratefully acknowledged.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal , Preprint 2016 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Jacint Balaguer; Jordi Ripollés;We explore the effect of cross-sectional aggregation of data on estimation and test of asymmetric retail fuel price responses to wholesale price shocks. The analysis is performed on data collected daily from individual fuel stations in the Spanish metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona. While the standard OLS estimator is applied to an error correction model in the case of the aggregated time series, we use the mean group approaches developed by Pesaran and Smith (1995) and Pesaran (2006) to estimate the short- and long-run micro-relations under heterogeneity. We found remarkable differences between the results of estimations using aggregated and disaggregated data, which are highly robust to both datasets considered. Our findings could help to explain many of the results in the literature on this research topic. On the one hand, they suggest that the typical estimation with aggregated data clearly tends to overestimate the persistence of shocks. On the other hand, we show that aggregation may generate a loss of efficiency in econometric estimates that is sufficiently large to hide the existence of the “rockets and feathers” phenomenon. The authors wish to thank members of the Department of Economics at the University of Sheffield (UK) for their comments and suggestions during the research stay of Jordi Ripollés in fall 2013. For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2012 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Balaguer, Jacint; Ripollés, Jordi;Abstract In this work we use daily data to examine pattern asymmetries in the speed of transmission of international wholesale oil prices to Spanish retail fuel prices. Results are robust to two alternative specifications of an asymmetric error correction model, for which the presence of autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity for disturbances is modeled by a GARCH(1,1) process. Evidence indicates that the short-term transmission of wholesale prices to retail prices is quite symmetric for both gasoline and diesel fuel. Nevertheless, in contrast to some of the results provided for an earlier period, we did not find asymmetries in the speed of retail price responses toward long-run equilibrium. Our evidence also suggests that the use of weekly (or lower frequency) data is one of the possible explanations for some of the seemingly contradictory results concerning this issue.

In this paper a simulation approach is employed to illustrate that, in this case, the persistence of price responses tends to be overestimated. To explore the real extent of the problem, we apply the mean group (MG) and the mean group with common correlated effects (MG-CCE) estimators to individual data from petrol stations. When heterogeneity in the pricing dynamics is captured by MG and MG-CCE estimators, persistence of retail price responses becomes considerably lower than the typical OLS estimations from average group data would suggest.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2016 SpainPublisher:Informa UK Limited Authors: Ripollés, Jordi; Balaguer, Jacint; In this paper we examine the extent to which the relationship between energy consumption and real GDP can be affected by an effective economic development policy based on industrialization.
