However, whether DW flow across shelves may affect the composition and structure of plankton communities down to the seafloor and the particles transport over long distances has not been fully investigated. Following the 2012 north Adriatic Sea cold outbreak, DW masses were intercepted at ca. 460 km south the area of origin and compared to resident ones in term of plankton biomass partitioning (pico to micro size) and phytoplankton species composition. Results indicated a relatively higher contribution of heterotrophs in DW than in deep resident water masses, probably as result of DW-mediated advection of fresh organic matter available to consumers. DWs showed unusual high abundances of Skeletonema sp., a diatom that bloomed in the north Adriatic during DW formation. The Lagrangian numerical model set up on this diatom confirmed that DW flow could be an important mechanism for plankton/particles export to deep waters. We conclude that the predicted climate-induced variability in DW formation events could have the potential to affect the ecosystem functioning of the deeper part of the Mediterranean basin, even at significant distance from generation sites.

For offshore wind energy assessment it is necessary to appropriately model and describe wind climate. In this connection, the Rayleigh and Weibull distributions are widely suggested for offshore wind speed modelling. Although the use of these distributions is theoretically consistent, in practice, they are often proved to be inadequate. In two recently published papers some, less known, multi-parameter distributions (Johnson SB, Kappa and Wakeby) were introduced and proved to describe more accurately the stochastic behaviour of wind speed measurements obtained from buoys located in entirely different sea areas of the world. In order to evaluate their fitting performance with reference to coastal wind speed data, in this paper we assessed long-term time series obtained from ten meteorological land-based stations across the Italian coasts. The obtained results confirmed that the Johnson SB, Kappa and Wakeby distributions are of general validity for any wind data set analysed, since they performed fairly well for the modelling of coastal wind speeds as well. These distributions adapted better than the Weibull and are suggested as reliable and prominent candidates for the modelling of offshore and coastal wind speed in any sea area.

The northern Adriatic Sea is a basin where dense shelf waters form during winters if the following favorable con- ditions are attained: high salinities, mainly related to low river water discharge (Po river in primis) during fall season, and strong heat fluxes induced by cold and dry Bora wind events blowing from north-east. Extremely favorable conditions to Northern Adriatic Dense Waters (NAdDW) formation characterized winter 2012 when, following several months of low Po river runoff, a strong event of Cold Air Outbreak (CAO) occurred from the end of January until mid-February. Consequently, the mean temperature of northern Adriatic waters dropped to about 6°C and exceptional densities (potential density anomaly locally exceeding 30.0 kg m -3 ) were reached. The production and spreading mechanisms of dense water in the Adriatic Sea have been modeled by means of the COAWST (Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport) modeling system. The model builds upon a high-resolution (1 km spaced horizontal grid), fully 3-D primitive equations hydrodynamic model coupled with a phase-averaged wave model and sediment routines, and is driven by simulated atmospheric forcings. The dataset used to assess model outputs relies on the measurements acquired during the dedicated field campaigns "Operation Dense Water", a set of two rapid response cruises carried out in southern Adriatic during winter 2012, and by five mooring arrays deployed in the Southern Adriatic Margin (SAM) that allowed the continuous acquisition of temperature, salinity, currents and suspended matter samples. Results from the integrated data-model approach suggest that the NAdDW propagates along the shelf to the southern basin following both a shallower vein and a deeper stream, with a process characterized by a strong var- iability (mean value of 0.31 Sv with peaks rapidly growing in the first weeks after the CAO up to 2.19 Sv). Addi- tionally, COAWST capability to couple different numerical models allowed to disentangle the relative importance of aspects on dense water generation, mixing and spreading, demonstrating how coupled runs can lead to vol- umes up to 50% larger with respect to uncoupled simulations. Additional light is shed on the transport pathways off the shelf and on possible sediment transport phenomena in the area, in this benefiting from an unprecedented spatial resolution and a new bathymetry reflecting very high resolution data acquired via multi-beam techniques. Although dense water propagation appears as a relatively large-scale process involving the whole western side of the SAM, topographic local discontinuities and seabed slopes appear crucial in triggering descent and governing flow patterns. The presence of suspended sediment along the water column, despite not significantly influencing the overall fluxes across sections, is responsible of pulling part of the veins towards deeper zones.

This volume contains the main results of the EC FP7 “The Ocean of Tomorrow” Project CoCoNet, divided in two sections: 1) a set of guidelines to design networks of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas; 2) a smart wind chart that will allow evaluating the possibility of installing Offshore Wind Farms in both seas. The concept of Cells of Ecosystem Functioning, based on connectivity, is introduced to define natural units of management and conservation. The definition of Good Environmental Status, as defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, is fully embraced to set the objectives of the project, by adopting a holistic approach that integrates a full set of disciplines, ranging from physics to bio-ecology, economics, engineering and many sub-disciplines. The CoCoNet Consortium involved scientist sfrom 22 states, based in Africa, Asia, and Europe, contributing to build a coherent scientific community. peer-reviewed

The paper describes formation and spreading of dense shelf waters in the Adriatic Sea (North Adriatic Dense Water, NAdDW) during the winter of 2012 as a consequence of an intense and long cold air outbreak of northeasterly Bora winds. As a result, during February 2012 northern Adriatic Sea water temperature dropped to about 6 degrees C and density exceeded 1030 kg/m(3), most likely the maximum value since 1929. NAdDW dynamics has been investigated by means of a 3-D ocean-wave coupled model running on a high resolution and eddy-permitting grid. The numerical experiments have relied on the Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport (COAWST) system forced one-way with atmospheric forcings provided by the model COSMO-17. A suite of observational data has been used to characterize the Bora event and evaluate numerical model performance. At sub-basin scales, the newly formed waters flowing southerly have produced a water renewal of the northern Adriatic, as more than 50% of water volumes have left the basin. Dense waters volume transports, evaluated through different Adriatic cross-sections, have been modulated by tides (damped for the densest water masses) and reached about 1 Sv. The contribution of wave-induced forcings has been quantified and examined, indicating that these represent a major driving mechanism during NAdDW production and spreading phases. This work provides evidence that NAdDW is spread accordingly with two different mechanisms: at early stages of its formation, the wind-driven ocean circulation pushes newly formed waters to leave the northern basin with relatively high speeds (about 0.30 m/s). Later on, remaining NAdDW leaks slowly out (0.09 m/s as average) from the production site. Residence times of dense waters in the north, middle, and south Adriatic Sea are also documented. The oceanographic campaign CARPET2014 (Characterizing Adriatic Region Preconditionig EvenTs), (30 January–4 February 2014) collected the very first turbulence data in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) under moderate wind (average wind speed 10 m s−1) and heat flux (net negative heat flux ranging from 150 to 400 W m−2). Observations consisted of 38 CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) casts and 478 microstructure profiles (grouped into 145 ensembles) with three sets of yoyo casts, each lasting for about 12 consecutive hours. Averaging closely repeated casts, such as the ensembles, can lead to a smearing effect when in the presence of a vertical density structure with strong interfaces that can move up or down between subsequent casts under the influence of tides and internal waves. In order to minimize the smearing effect of such displacements on mean quantities, we developed an algorithm to realign successive microstructure profiles to produce sharper and more meaningful mean profiles of measured turbulence parameters. During the campaign, the water column in the gulf evolved from well-mixed to stratified conditions due to Adriatic waters intruding at the bottom along the gulf's south-eastern coast. We show that during the warm and relatively dry winter, the water column in the Gulf of Trieste, even under moderate wind forcing, was not completely mixed due to the influence of bottom waters intruding from the open sea. Inside the gulf, two types of water intrusions were found during yoyo casts: one coming from the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea (i.e. cooler, fresher and more turbid) and one coming from the open sea in front of the Po Delta (i.e. warmer, saltier and less turbid). The two intrusions had different impacts on turbulence kinetic energy dissipation rate profiles. The former, with high turbidity, acted as a barrier to wind-driven turbulence, while the latter, with low sediment concentrations and a smaller vertical density gradient, was not able to suppress downward penetration of turbulence from the surface.

The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin located in the NE part of the Mediterranean Sea and it is strongly influenced by riverine inputs. In its northern sub-basin the freshwater plume of the Po River, together with those of numerous smaller rivers, plays a fundamental role in driving the physical and biogeochemical processes of the whole basin. In this paper we characterize the surface plume structure and identify its patterns and temporal variability on seasonal and inter-annual scales relating it to its major forcings (i.e., river discharges and winds). To perform this analysis, a 3D hydrodynamic numerical model was implemented over the whole Adriatic for the period 2003-2010 and the resulting outputs were analyzed through a series of statistical tools. The inter-annual and seasonal averages of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) fields show that the average patterns are composed of a coastal plume, wider or narrower depending on the season, that flows southward of the Po River mouths. The first two modes of the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis show a similar distribution with a cumulative explained variance up to 60%; the third mode, instead, presents a plume shape that extends well into the basin. To obtain a more detailed representation of the plume, a 2×3 Self-Organizing Map (SOM) analysis was performed over the surface salinity fields. Two antithetic patterns were depicted: (i) a small plume confined to coastal areas, typical of low discharges and/or Bora wind events and (ii) a wider plume that extends into the basin, typical of high river discharges and/or Sirocco winds. The comparison between wind regimes, riverine inputs and the time series of the SOM's Best Matching Units (BMU) suggested that, on long time scales, river discharges represent the dominant forcing in defining the plume size and surface pattern, while on time scales of few days the plume dynamics are modulated mostly by the wind structure.

However, whether DW flow across shelves may affect the composition and structure of plankton communities down to the seafloor and the particles transport over long distances has not been fully investigated. Following the 2012 north Adriatic Sea cold outbreak, DW masses were intercepted at ca. 460 km south the area of origin and compared to resident ones in term of plankton biomass partitioning (pico to micro size) and phytoplankton species composition. Results indicated a relatively higher contribution of heterotrophs in DW than in deep resident water masses, probably as result of DW-mediated advection of fresh organic matter available to consumers. DWs showed unusual high abundances of Skeletonema sp., a diatom that bloomed in the north Adriatic during DW formation. The Lagrangian numerical model set up on this diatom confirmed that DW flow could be an important mechanism for plankton/particles export to deep waters. We conclude that the predicted climate-induced variability in DW formation events could have the potential to affect the ecosystem functioning of the deeper part of the Mediterranean basin, even at significant distance from generation sites.

For offshore wind energy assessment it is necessary to appropriately model and describe wind climate. In this connection, the Rayleigh and Weibull distributions are widely suggested for offshore wind speed modelling. Although the use of these distributions is theoretically consistent, in practice, they are often proved to be inadequate. In two recently published papers some, less known, multi-parameter distributions (Johnson SB, Kappa and Wakeby) were introduced and proved to describe more accurately the stochastic behaviour of wind speed measurements obtained from buoys located in entirely different sea areas of the world. In order to evaluate their fitting performance with reference to coastal wind speed data, in this paper we assessed long-term time series obtained from ten meteorological land-based stations across the Italian coasts. The obtained results confirmed that the Johnson SB, Kappa and Wakeby distributions are of general validity for any wind data set analysed, since they performed fairly well for the modelling of coastal wind speeds as well. These distributions adapted better than the Weibull and are suggested as reliable and prominent candidates for the modelling of offshore and coastal wind speed in any sea area.

The northern Adriatic Sea is a basin where dense shelf waters form during winters if the following favorable con- ditions are attained: high salinities, mainly related to low river water discharge (Po river in primis) during fall season, and strong heat fluxes induced by cold and dry Bora wind events blowing from north-east. Extremely favorable conditions to Northern Adriatic Dense Waters (NAdDW) formation characterized winter 2012 when, following several months of low Po river runoff, a strong event of Cold Air Outbreak (CAO) occurred from the end of January until mid-February. Consequently, the mean temperature of northern Adriatic waters dropped to about 6°C and exceptional densities (potential density anomaly locally exceeding 30.0 kg m -3 ) were reached. The production and spreading mechanisms of dense water in the Adriatic Sea have been modeled by means of the COAWST (Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport) modeling system. The model builds upon a high-resolution (1 km spaced horizontal grid), fully 3-D primitive equations hydrodynamic model coupled with a phase-averaged wave model and sediment routines, and is driven by simulated atmospheric forcings. The dataset used to assess model outputs relies on the measurements acquired during the dedicated field campaigns "Operation Dense Water", a set of two rapid response cruises carried out in southern Adriatic during winter 2012, and by five mooring arrays deployed in the Southern Adriatic Margin (SAM) that allowed the continuous acquisition of temperature, salinity, currents and suspended matter samples. Results from the integrated data-model approach suggest that the NAdDW propagates along the shelf to the southern basin following both a shallower vein and a deeper stream, with a process characterized by a strong var- iability (mean value of 0.31 Sv with peaks rapidly growing in the first weeks after the CAO up to 2.19 Sv). Addi- tionally, COAWST capability to couple different numerical models allowed to disentangle the relative importance of aspects on dense water generation, mixing and spreading, demonstrating how coupled runs can lead to vol- umes up to 50% larger with respect to uncoupled simulations. Additional light is shed on the transport pathways off the shelf and on possible sediment transport phenomena in the area, in this benefiting from an unprecedented spatial resolution and a new bathymetry reflecting very high resolution data acquired via multi-beam techniques. Although dense water propagation appears as a relatively large-scale process involving the whole western side of the SAM, topographic local discontinuities and seabed slopes appear crucial in triggering descent and governing flow patterns. The presence of suspended sediment along the water column, despite not significantly influencing the overall fluxes across sections, is responsible of pulling part of the veins towards deeper zones.

This volume contains the main results of the EC FP7 “The Ocean of Tomorrow” Project CoCoNet, divided in two sections: 1) a set of guidelines to design networks of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas; 2) a smart wind chart that will allow evaluating the possibility of installing Offshore Wind Farms in both seas. The concept of Cells of Ecosystem Functioning, based on connectivity, is introduced to define natural units of management and conservation. The definition of Good Environmental Status, as defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, is fully embraced to set the objectives of the project, by adopting a holistic approach that integrates a full set of disciplines, ranging from physics to bio-ecology, economics, engineering and many sub-disciplines. The paper describes formation and spreading of dense shelf waters in the Adriatic Sea (North Adriatic Dense Water, NAdDW) during the winter of 2012 as a consequence of an intense and long cold air outbreak of northeasterly Bora winds. As a result, during February 2012 northern Adriatic Sea water temperature dropped to about 6 degrees C and density exceeded 1030 kg/m(3), most likely the maximum value since 1929. NAdDW dynamics has been investigated by means of a 3-D ocean-wave coupled model running on a high resolution and eddy-permitting grid. The numerical experiments have relied on the Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport (COAWST) system forced one-way with atmospheric forcings provided by the model COSMO-17. A suite of observational data has been used to characterize the Bora event and evaluate numerical model performance. At sub-basin scales, the newly formed waters flowing southerly have produced a water renewal of the northern Adriatic, as more than 50% of water volumes have left the basin. Dense waters volume transports, evaluated through different Adriatic cross-sections, have been modulated by tides (damped for the densest water masses) and reached about 1 Sv. The contribution of wave-induced forcings has been quantified and examined, indicating that these represent a major driving mechanism during NAdDW production and spreading phases. This work provides evidence that NAdDW is spread accordingly with two different mechanisms: at early stages of its formation, the wind-driven ocean circulation pushes newly formed waters to leave the northern basin with relatively high speeds (about 0.30 m/s). Later on, remaining NAdDW leaks slowly out (0.09 m/s as average) from the production site. Residence times of dense waters in the north, middle, and south Adriatic Sea are also documented. The oceanographic campaign CARPET2014 (Characterizing Adriatic Region Preconditionig EvenTs), (30 January–4 February 2014) collected the very first turbulence data in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) under moderate wind (average wind speed 10 m s−1) and heat flux (net negative heat flux ranging from 150 to 400 W m−2). Observations consisted of 38 CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) casts and 478 microstructure profiles (grouped into 145 ensembles) with three sets of yoyo casts, each lasting for about 12 consecutive hours. Averaging closely repeated casts, such as the ensembles, can lead to a smearing effect when in the presence of a vertical density structure with strong interfaces that can move up or down between subsequent casts under the influence of tides and internal waves. In order to minimize the smearing effect of such displacements on mean quantities, we developed an algorithm to realign successive microstructure profiles to produce sharper and more meaningful mean profiles of measured turbulence parameters. During the campaign, the water column in the gulf evolved from well-mixed to stratified conditions due to Adriatic waters intruding at the bottom along the gulf's south-eastern coast. We show that during the warm and relatively dry winter, the water column in the Gulf of Trieste, even under moderate wind forcing, was not completely mixed due to the influence of bottom waters intruding from the open sea. Inside the gulf, two types of water intrusions were found during yoyo casts: one coming from the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea (i.e. cooler, fresher and more turbid) and one coming from the open sea in front of the Po Delta (i.e. warmer, saltier and less turbid). The two intrusions had different impacts on turbulence kinetic energy dissipation rate profiles. The former, with high turbidity, acted as a barrier to wind-driven turbulence, while the latter, with low sediment concentrations and a smaller vertical density gradient, was not able to suppress downward penetration of turbulence from the surface.

The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin located in the NE part of the Mediterranean Sea and it is strongly influenced by riverine inputs. In its northern sub-basin the freshwater plume of the Po River, together with those of numerous smaller rivers, plays a fundamental role in driving the physical and biogeochemical processes of the whole basin. In this paper we characterize the surface plume structure and identify its patterns and temporal variability on seasonal and inter-annual scales relating it to its major forcings (i.e., river discharges and winds). To perform this analysis, a 3D hydrodynamic numerical model was implemented over the whole Adriatic for the period 2003-2010 and the resulting outputs were analyzed through a series of statistical tools. The inter-annual and seasonal averages of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) fields show that the average patterns are composed of a coastal plume, wider or narrower depending on the season, that flows southward of the Po River mouths. The first two modes of the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis show a similar distribution with a cumulative explained variance up to 60%; the third mode, instead, presents a plume shape that extends well into the basin. To obtain a more detailed representation of the plume, a 2×3 Self-Organizing Map (SOM) analysis was performed over the surface salinity fields. Two antithetic patterns were depicted: (i) a small plume confined to coastal areas, typical of low discharges and/or Bora wind events and (ii) a wider plume that extends into the basin, typical of high river discharges and/or Sirocco winds. The comparison between wind regimes, riverine inputs and the time series of the SOM's Best Matching Units (BMU) suggested that, on long time scales, river discharges represent the dominant forcing in defining the plume size and surface pattern, while on time scales of few days the plume dynamics are modulated mostly by the wind structure.
