F.;Performance and load normalized coefficients, deriving from an experimental campaign of measurements conducted at the large scale wind tunnel of the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), are presented with the aim of providing useful benchmark data for the validation of numerical codes. Rough data, derived from real scale measurements on a three-bladed Troposkien vertical-axis wind turbine, are manipulated in a convenient form to be easily compared with the typical outputs provided by simulation codes. The here proposed data complement and support the measurements already presented in "Wind Tunnel Testing of the DeepWind Demonstrator in Design and Tilted Operating Conditions" (Battisti et al., 2016) [1].

Abstract The aerodynamic design of small wind turbines for the urban setting attracts increasing interest within the scientific community, but the adoption of a proper control strategy may be just as important, especially in high turbulent winds, where such energy conversion devices should ideally operate. As a matter of fact, the mere rotor efficiency is meaningless unless the system has also the capability of rapidly changing its angular speed in case of a sudden variation of the wind velocity, to reach a new optimal operating condition. This work will attempt neither to develop dynamic simulation models nor to examine possible turbine control strategies, being the focus much broader, namely, the investigation of operational contexts where the peculiar inertial characteristics of wind turbines would compromise any form of robust control. Inertial and operational data of commercially available turbines (characterized by both horizontal and vertical-axis architectures), as well as the results disseminated in various literature sources, operational experiences and design best practices, are here collected under one cover and compared, thus deriving some basic and fundamental relations between rotor inertia and angular acceleration, highlighting how, in several cases, a control strategy based on the continuous tracking of the optimal operating condition is most unlikely. Such considerations raise the question of whether the problem of inertia renders futile many prevailing theories about small wind turbine operation and plans for implementing new control strategies, especially as far as vertical axis architectures are concerned. On the other hand, some constructive advice is also presented, in the form of a means to compare the effective performances of different turbines, in a given installation site, with respect to their nominal (i.e. steady state, or wind tunnel) behaviour. As a final result, a new bound for a reliable estimation of the amount of energy a wind turbine will generate in a specific site is suggested, based on the comparison between a representative time scale of the installation site and the response time of the candidate wind turbine.

Abstract The accurate prediction of airfoil polars over the whole range of angles of attack and for different Reynolds numbers is pivotal to ensure an accurate prediction of wind turbine aerodynamic performance. In particular, modeling correctly the deep-stall and post-stall airfoil behavior is essential to reproduce reliable power and thrust curves for high wind conditions, especially as far as stall-controlled wind turbines are concerned. This need is even more urgent in vertical-axis wind turbines, in which the airfoils do experience a continuous variation of the angle of attack, exceeding the stall limit even in normal operating points. This paper presents a new method for extending an existing database of airfoil aerodynamic coefficients, e.g. in the common ranges of aeronautical references, over the ±180° range of angles of attack for an arbitrary airfoil shape. Moving from a few basic geometric data, as maximum thickness, camber and leading-edge radius, the whole curves of lift and drag coefficients are reconstructed starting from deep-stall conditions. The proposed correlation is compared to different models for the post-stall extrapolation of the airfoil behavior and experimental data, showing a good agreement with experimental polars for both symmetrical and cambered airfoils.

This paper presents the results of a wide experimental study on an H-type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) carried out at the Politecnico di Milano. The experiments were carried out in a large-scale wind tunnel, where wind turbines for microgeneration can be tested in real-scale conditions. Integral torque and thrust measurements were performed, as well as detailed aerodynamic measurements to characterize the flow field generated by the turbine downstream of the rotor. The machine was tested in both a confined (closed chamber) and unconfined (open chamber) environment, to highlight the effect of wind tunnel blockage on the aerodynamics and performance of the VAWT under investigation. The experimental results, compared with the blockage correlations presently available, suggest that specific correction models should be developed for VAWTs. The experimental thrust and power curves of the turbine, derived from integral measurements, exhibit the expected trends with a peak power coefficient of about 0.28 at tip-speed ratio equal to 2.5. Flow measurements, performed in three conditions for tip speed ratio equal to 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5, show the fully three-dimensional character of the wake, especially in the tip region where a nonsymmetrical wake and tip vortex are found. The unsteady evolution of the velocity and turbulence fields further highlights the effect of aerodynamic loading on the wake unsteadiness, showing the time-dependent nature of the tip vortex and the onset of dynamic stall for tip speed ratio lower than 2.

In this paper, the aerodynamics of two vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are discussed, on the basis of a wide set of experiments performed at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. A H-shaped and a Troposkien Darrieus turbine for microgeneration, featuring the same swept area and blade section, are tested at full-scale. Performance measurements show that the Troposkien rotor outperforms the H-shaped turbine, thanks to the larger midspan section of the Troposkien rotor and to the nonaerodynamic struts of the H-shaped rotor. These features are consistent with the character of the wakes shed by the turbines, measured by means of hot wire anemometry on several surfaces downstream of the models. The H-shape and Troposkien turbine wakes exhibit relevant differences in the three-dimensional morphology and unsteady evolution. In particular, large-scale vortices dominate the tip region of the wake shed by the H-shape turbine; these vortices pulsate significantly during the period, due to the periodic fluctuation of the blade aerodynamic loading. Conversely, the highly tapered shape of the Troposkien rotor not only prevents the onset of tip vortices, but also induces a dramatic spanwise reduction of tip speed ratio (TSR), promoting the onset of local dynamic stall marked by high periodic and turbulent unsteadiness in the tip region of the wake. The way in which these mechanisms affect the wake evolution and mixing process for the two classes of turbines is investigated for different tip speed ratios, highlighting some relevant implications in the framework of wind energy exploitation.

Abstract Most of the experimental research on vertical axis wind turbines was carried out during 1970–1980s but, recently, the potential of wind energy harvesting in new environments has renewed the interest on VAWT technology. Unfortunately, this interest still collides with an immaturity of aerodynamic modelling tools and detailed experimental analyses are now highly recommended to convert flow field comprehension into novel design techniques. This paper critically revises the main extensive wind tunnel campaigns conducted on VAWTs during the last 15 years. Moreover, a direct comparison between two widely adopted lift-driven rotor architectures, i.e. H-shaped and troposkien, characterized by the same swept area and blade section, is presented. After being instrumented to characterize aerodynamic performance and thrust as well as flow characteristics in the wake, the rotors were tested in the Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel using an open configuration, allowing real-scale measurements of micro wind turbines. A complete characterization was obtained by recording steady-state torque, thrust and flow velocity in the wake as a function of the unperturbed wind speed, while the angular velocity of the rotors was kept constant. The measurements were conducted with high accuracy and can represent a useful experimental benchmark for the validation of computational tools.

Abstract The DeepWind Project aims at investigating the feasibility of a new floating vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) concept, whose purpose is to exploit wind resources at deep-water offshore sites. The results of an extensive experimental campaign on the DeepWind reduced scale demonstrator are here presented for different wind speeds and rotor angular velocities, including also skewed flow operation due to a tilted rotor arrangement. To accomplish this, after being instrumented to measure aerodynamic power and thrust (both in streamwise and transversal directions), a troposkien three-bladed rotor was installed on a high precision test bench, whose axis was suitable to be inclined up to 15° with respect to the design (i.e. upright) operating condition. The experiments were performed at the large scale, high speed wind tunnel of the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), using a “free jet” (open channel) configuration. The velocity field in the wake of the rotor was also fully characterized by means of an instrumented traversing system, to investigate the flow distribution downstream of the test section. Special care is taken in the description of the experimental set-up and of the measured data, so that the present results can be used as a benchmark for the validation of simulation models.

Abstract The aerodynamic design of small wind turbines for the urban setting attracts increasing interest within the scientific community, but the adoption of a proper control strategy may be just as important, especially in high turbulent winds, where such energy conversion devices should ideally operate. As a matter of fact, the mere rotor efficiency is meaningless unless the system has also the capability of rapidly changing its angular speed in case of a sudden variation of the wind velocity, to reach a new optimal operating condition. This work will attempt neither to develop dynamic simulation models nor to examine possible turbine control strategies, being the focus much broader, namely, the investigation of operational contexts where the peculiar inertial characteristics of wind turbines would compromise any form of robust control. Inertial and operational data of commercially available turbines (characterized by both horizontal and vertical-axis architectures), as well as the results disseminated in various literature sources, operational experiences and design best practices, are here collected under one cover and compared, thus deriving some basic and fundamental relations between rotor inertia and angular acceleration, highlighting how, in several cases, a control strategy based on the continuous tracking of the optimal operating condition is most unlikely. Such considerations raise the question of whether the problem of inertia renders futile many prevailing theories about small wind turbine operation and plans for implementing new control strategies, especially as far as vertical axis architectures are concerned. On the other hand, some constructive advice is also presented, in the form of a means to compare the effective performances of different turbines, in a given installation site, with respect to their nominal (i.e. steady state, or wind tunnel) behaviour. As a final result, a new bound for a reliable estimation of the amount of energy a wind turbine will generate in a specific site is suggested, based on the comparison between a representative time scale of the installation site and the response time of the candidate wind turbine.

Abstract The accurate prediction of airfoil polars over the whole range of angles of attack and for different Reynolds numbers is pivotal to ensure an accurate prediction of wind turbine aerodynamic performance. In particular, modeling correctly the deep-stall and post-stall airfoil behavior is essential to reproduce reliable power and thrust curves for high wind conditions, especially as far as stall-controlled wind turbines are concerned. This need is even more urgent in vertical-axis wind turbines, in which the airfoils do experience a continuous variation of the angle of attack, exceeding the stall limit even in normal operating points. This paper presents a new method for extending an existing database of airfoil aerodynamic coefficients, e.g. in the common ranges of aeronautical references, over the ±180° range of angles of attack for an arbitrary airfoil shape. Moving from a few basic geometric data, as maximum thickness, camber and leading-edge radius, the whole curves of lift and drag coefficients are reconstructed starting from deep-stall conditions. The proposed correlation is compared to different models for the post-stall extrapolation of the airfoil behavior and experimental data, showing a good agreement with experimental polars for both symmetrical and cambered airfoils.

This paper presents the results of a wide experimental study on an H-type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) carried out at the Politecnico di Milano. The experiments were carried out in a large-scale wind tunnel, where wind turbines for microgeneration can be tested in real-scale conditions. Integral torque and thrust measurements were performed, as well as detailed aerodynamic measurements to characterize the flow field generated by the turbine downstream of the rotor. The machine was tested in both a confined (closed chamber) and unconfined (open chamber) environment, to highlight the effect of wind tunnel blockage on the aerodynamics and performance of the VAWT under investigation. The experimental results, compared with the blockage correlations presently available, suggest that specific correction models should be developed for VAWTs. The experimental thrust and power curves of the turbine, derived from integral measurements, exhibit the expected trends with a peak power coefficient of about 0.28 at tip-speed ratio equal to 2.5. Flow measurements, performed in three conditions for tip speed ratio equal to 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5, show the fully three-dimensional character of the wake, especially in the tip region where a nonsymmetrical wake and tip vortex are found. The unsteady evolution of the velocity and turbulence fields further highlights the effect of aerodynamic loading on the wake unsteadiness, showing the time-dependent nature of the tip vortex and the onset of dynamic stall for tip speed ratio lower than 2.

In this paper, the aerodynamics of two vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are discussed, on the basis of a wide set of experiments performed at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. A H-shaped and a Troposkien Darrieus turbine for microgeneration, featuring the same swept area and blade section, are tested at full-scale. Performance measurements show that the Troposkien rotor outperforms the H-shaped turbine, thanks to the larger midspan section of the Troposkien rotor and to the nonaerodynamic struts of the H-shaped rotor. These features are consistent with the character of the wakes shed by the turbines, measured by means of hot wire anemometry on several surfaces downstream of the models. The H-shape and Troposkien turbine wakes exhibit relevant differences in the three-dimensional morphology and unsteady evolution. In particular, large-scale vortices dominate the tip region of the wake shed by the H-shape turbine; these vortices pulsate significantly during the period, due to the periodic fluctuation of the blade aerodynamic loading. Conversely, the highly tapered shape of the Troposkien rotor not only prevents the onset of tip vortices, but also induces a dramatic spanwise reduction of tip speed ratio (TSR), promoting the onset of local dynamic stall marked by high periodic and turbulent unsteadiness in the tip region of the wake. The way in which these mechanisms affect the wake evolution and mixing process for the two classes of turbines is investigated for different tip speed ratios, highlighting some relevant implications in the framework of wind energy exploitation.

Abstract Most of the experimental research on vertical axis wind turbines was carried out during 1970–1980s but, recently, the potential of wind energy harvesting in new environments has renewed the interest on VAWT technology. Unfortunately, this interest still collides with an immaturity of aerodynamic modelling tools and detailed experimental analyses are now highly recommended to convert flow field comprehension into novel design techniques. This paper critically revises the main extensive wind tunnel campaigns conducted on VAWTs during the last 15 years. Moreover, a direct comparison between two widely adopted lift-driven rotor architectures, i.e. H-shaped and troposkien, characterized by the same swept area and blade section, is presented. After being instrumented to characterize aerodynamic performance and thrust as well as flow characteristics in the wake, the rotors were tested in the Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel using an open configuration, allowing real-scale measurements of micro wind turbines. A complete characterization was obtained by recording steady-state torque, thrust and flow velocity in the wake as a function of the unperturbed wind speed, while the angular velocity of the rotors was kept constant. The measurements were conducted with high accuracy and can represent a useful experimental benchmark for the validation of computational tools.

Abstract The DeepWind Project aims at investigating the feasibility of a new floating vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) concept, whose purpose is to exploit wind resources at deep-water offshore sites. The results of an extensive experimental campaign on the DeepWind reduced scale demonstrator are here presented for different wind speeds and rotor angular velocities, including also skewed flow operation due to a tilted rotor arrangement. To accomplish this, after being instrumented to measure aerodynamic power and thrust (both in streamwise and transversal directions), a troposkien three-bladed rotor was installed on a high precision test bench, whose axis was suitable to be inclined up to 15° with respect to the design (i.e. upright) operating condition. The experiments were performed at the large scale, high speed wind tunnel of the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), using a “free jet” (open channel) configuration. The velocity field in the wake of the rotor was also fully characterized by means of an instrumented traversing system, to investigate the flow distribution downstream of the test section. Special care is taken in the description of the experimental set-up and of the measured data, so that the present results can be used as a benchmark for the validation of simulation models.
