The effect of partial shading in photovoltaic (PV) panels is one of the biggest problems regarding power losses in PV systems. When the irradiance pattern throughout a PV panel is inequal, some cells with the possibility of higher power production will produce less and start to deteriorate. The objective of this research work is to present, test and discuss different techniques to help mitigate partial shading in PV panels, observing and commenting the advantages and disadvantages for different PV technologies under different operating conditions. The motivation is to contribute with research, simulation, and experimental work. Several state-of-the-artsolutions to the problem will be presented: different topologies in the interconnection of the panels; different PV system architectures, and also introducing new solution hypotheses, such as different cell interconnections topologies. Alongside, benefits and limitations will be discussed. To obtain actual results, the simulation work was conducted by creating MATLAB/Simulink models for each different technique tested, all centered around the 1M5P PV cell model. The several techniques tested will also take into account different patterns and sizes of partial shading, different PV panel technologies, different values of source irradiation, and different PV array sizes. The results will be discussed and validated by experimental tests.

In this paper, an autonomous photovoltaic system is going to be designed for the North Tower of Instituto Superior Técnico through the application of solar panels on its windows, using them as producers of electricity based on solar energy. The main objectives of this paper are: (1) to make the building energetically autonomous, using an integrated system of solar photovoltaic technology; (2) check the system behaviour and comment on possible system impacts on the user’s lifestyle. Two solutions are going to be proposed to cover/substitute the windows of the Tower, one using amorphous silicon panels and the other using crystalline silicon panels. Taking into account this type of solution, it is possible to recognize that there are positive impacts, such as the reduction of transmission lines/grids or the decentralisation of energy supplies. However, there are also disadvantages such as the need to have an energy storage system to guarantee the continuous supply. This study, for this building in particular, shows that organic photovoltaic cells have enormous advantages in the future in terms of our environment and social needs, but they do not yet produce the energy needed to meet today’s needs. Both solutions present a return estimative time of seven years, with an initial investment of approximately two million euros, but the produced energy will not be enough to create an off-grid system.

In this work, the study of different remuneration schemes for the implementation of a solar energy system on a building was performed. The photovoltaic system was implemented on a public educational building, and four different schemes are compared to understand the economic feasibility of self-consuming solar energy with and without a battery system, versus selling to the electricity grid. The system performance is compared to the building’s needs, and the different consumption and grid-injection shares are analyzed. Three of the schemes are applied according to the conditions and requirements of the Portuguese Law, while the remaining one is not yet allowed, and so the legislation from another chosen country is considered. Lastly, a financial analysis was performed to evaluate and compare the feasibility of each project implementation. The results of this analysis show that both the non-legislated and legislated self-consumption schemes make for an attractive investment, and that savings resulting from the consumption of solar energy are much higher than the revenues from selling to the grid, which presents as the least attractive scheme. Finally, the battery implementation also does not show feasibility because the cost of technology is still too high, despite the reduction witnessed in recent years.

Marques Lameirinhas, Ricardo A. in OpenAIREPhotovoltaic technology has played an increasingly important role in the global energy scenery. However, there are some challenges concerning the durability of photovoltaic modules that need to be overcome. Several factors lead to its degradation with a progressive reduction in its efficiency over the years. This aging depends on the type of photovoltaic technology and on the environment where the modules are installed. In this context, it will be investigated the impact of degradation on the performance of four photovoltaic technologies (c-Si, a-Si, CIGS and organic perovskite cells). Therefore, experimental tests of two different degradation conditions were carried out: formation of cracks and formation of bubbles. Throughout each of the experimental stages, the evolution of the electrical parameters that represent the cell performance was analyzed. In addition to the experimental study, a Finite Element Model with 3D representation of a c-Si was developed in order to assess the impact of the bubbles volume on the light absorption of this cell. Based on the experimental results, it is concluded that cracking significantly affected the performance of all the technologies studied. Regarding bubble induction, there was a reduction in the electrical conversion of c-Si and organic perovskite technologies. Contrarily, the a-Si cell was not very sensitive to heating and no visible bubbles or efficiency decrease were detected. With the optical simulation it is concluded that, in c-Si cell, the increase of the total bubbles volume is reflected in a decrease of its absorption.

Each island has an independent electrical system classified as an isolated micro-system, given its size and location. The aim of this paper is to analyse the best set of technologies to have nine sustainable hybrid systems. For this purpose, some factors will be considered, such as actual data production of the island, economic scenarios, growth perspectives of consumption and reliability of supply. The results of these studies will allow us to conclude on the applicability of these systems and to quantify the consequent socio-economic, environmental and fossil energy-saving benefits. A system is projected to the archipelago, in order to reduce the energy production due to non-renewable energies, budgeted on 783.28 million euros, which intend to instal wind farms and photovoltaic parks (using polycrystalline and cadmium telluride technologies).

Renewable energies are a plausible alternative, because they have lower emissions of toxic gases in comparison with non-renewable ones. In the group of renewable energies, solar technology has the biggest overall potential, mainly because it is cheap and easy to set. Several solar technologies allow to equip their photovoltaic panels with concentrators, mostly to increase the output power and possibly their efficiency. However, some problems related to the use of concentrators have to be dealt in order to improve the entire photovoltaic system performance. One of these issues is the corrosion of the concentrators, leading to a premature ageing and, consequently an increase in maintenance costs. This problem is going to be analysed in this paper, presenting some simulation from a ray traicing software and also some experimental results, from our own laboratory experiences. The used software allows to trace the solar rays of the concentrator, in order to assess the effect of the defects caused by corrosion due to the ambient circumstances. After it, experimental results will help to analyse this effect and to prove simulation ones.

Carlos A. F. Fernandes in OpenAIREThe world is witnessing a tide of change in the photovoltaic industry like never before; we are far from the solar cells of ten years ago that only had 15–18% efficiency. More and more, multi-junction technologies seem to be the future for photovoltaics, with these technologies already hitting the mark of 30% under 1-sun. This work focuses especially on a state-of-the-art triple-junction solar cell, the GaInP/GaInAs/Ge lattice-matched, that is currently being used in most satellites and concentrator photovoltaic systems. The three subcells are first analyzed individually and then the whole cell is put together and simulated. The typical figures-of-merit are extracted; all the I−V curves obtained are presented, along with the external quantum efficiencies. A study on how temperature affects the cell was done, given its relevance when talking about space applications. An overall optimization of the cell is also elaborated; the cell’s thickness and doping are changed so that maximum efficiency can be reached. For a better understanding of how varying both these properties affect efficiency, graphic 3D plots were computed based on the obtained results. Considering this optimization, an improvement of 0.2343% on the cell’s efficiency is obtained.

Numerical simulation results and modeling on the electrical features of concentrating photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) using the free circuit simulation package from linear technology corporation (LTSPICE) are presented. The effects of partial shading of cell strings and temperature are analyzed, showing very good agreement with the results obtained experimentally in lab, at Lisbon University, and under outdoor testing using similar receivers, at the SME Solarus Sunpower AB, a Swedish company whose mission is the development, production, and marketing of concentrated solar technology to the world market. The potential of the used methodology for the design of the solar cell configuration is emphasized as an important tool to optimize PV and PVT performances in the energy conversion process.

Costa Branco in OpenAIREAbstract This work aims at describing a simulation model that studies the influence of the cell string layout on the performance of solar panels taking into account the environmental conditions. Several solar cell string configurations in the photovoltaic modules are simulated using a simulation program for integrated circuits, looking for a mitigation of the effects of shading and/or non-uniform illumination of the solar panel. The simulation model is validated using data provided by Solarus, 1 as well as results obtained experimentally in Sweden concerning outdoor tests or using a lab solar simulator with similar collectors. The model is simple and flexible enough to be easily matched to various string layout configurations and, unlike several maximum power point tracking procedures, it allows the correct assessment of the maximum power in situations presenting multiple maxima in the power versus voltage stationary characteristic of the solar panel. The simulated and experimental average electrical efficiency in December in Gavle (Sweden) for flat collectors manufactured by Solarus with strings of 38 solar cells connected in series is around 20%. Modifications in the solar modules currently manufactured in Solarus are proposed, together with the identification of the contexts in which they represent a reasonable added value. Examples of module configurations with overlapped bypass diodes show an increase of almost 100% in the short circuit current. The methodology used in this work for the design of the solar cell configuration is a valid contribution to the analysis of stationary roof/ground grid-tied or off-grid small installations and it represents undoubtedly an important tool for the enterprises in the manufacturing process.
