    This paper considers a smart grid cyber-security problem analyzing the vulnerabilities of electric power networks to false data attacks. The analysis problem is related to a constrained cardinality minimization problem. The main result shows that an $l_1$ relaxation technique provides an exact optimal solution to this cardinality minimization problem. The proposed result is based on a polyhedral combinatorics argument. It is different from well-known results based on mutual coherence and restricted isometry property. The results are illustrated on benchmarks including the IEEE 118-bus and 300-bus systems.

    A novel distributed algorithm is proposed in this paper for a network of consumers coupled by energy resource sharing constraints, which aims at minimizing the aggregated electricity costs. Each consumers is equipped with an energy management system that schedules the shiftable loads accounting for user preferences, while an aggregator entity coordinates the consumers demand and manages the interaction with the grid and the shared energy storage system (ESS) via a distributed strategy. The proposed distributed coordination algorithm requires the computation of Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MILPs) at each iteration. The proposed approach guarantees constraints satisfaction, cooperation among consumers, and fairness in the use of the shared resources among consumers. The strategy requires limited message exchange between each consumer and the aggregator, and no messaging among the consumers, which protects consumers privacy. Performance of the proposed distributed algorithm in comparison with a centralized one is illustrated using numerical experiments.

    This paper proposes a new model reduction algorithm for power systems based on an extension of balanced truncation. The algorithm is applicable to power systems which are divided into a study area which requires a high-fidelity model and an external area, making up most of the power system, which is to be reduced. The division of the power system can be made arbitrarily and does not rely on the identification of coherent generators. The proposed algorithm yields a reduced order system with a full nonlinear description of the study area and a reduced linear model of the external area.

    This paper proposes a new model reduction algorithm for power systems based on an extension of balanced truncation. The algorithm is applicable to power systems which are divided into a study area which requires a high-fidelity model and an external area, making up most of the power system, which is to be reduced. The division of the power system can be made arbitrarily and does not rely on the identification of coherent generators. The proposed algorithm yields a reduced order system with a full nonlinear description of the study area and a reduced linear model of the external area.

    Most existing industrial control systems (ICSs), such as building energy management systems (EMSs), were installed when potential security threats were only physical. With advances in connectivity, ICSs are now, typically, connected to communications networks and, as a result, can be accessed remotely. This extends the attack surface to include the potential for sophisticated cyber attacks, which can adversely impact ICS operation, resulting in service interruption, equipment damage, safety concerns, and associated financial implications. In this work, a novel cyber–physical security framework for ICSs is proposed, which incorporates an analytics tool for attack detection and executes a reliable estimation-based attack-resilient control policy, whenever an attack is detected. The proposed framework is adaptable to already implemented ICS and the stability and optimal performance of the controlled system under attack has been proved. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated using a reduced order model of a real EMS site and simulated attacks.

    Abstract The energy sector is going through a large transformation due to public demands of renewable energy sources. However, a major issue is that these energy sources are intermittent. If designed correctly, district heating systems can naturally contain energy storing units, for example by storing heat in the isolated pipes that make up the heat grid. Additionally, this makes it easier to reuse and transport already generated heat to other users. This paper proposes a mathematical model of such a grid, where excess energy can be retracted from one user and distributed to other users using a network of heat pumps. In some cases, one can balance residual heat production with the heat consumption, temporarily eliminating the need for a centralized heating plant. Existence conditions for stable steady states of such a network with general topology are given. Finally, energy optimal stable steady states are obtained through convex optimization.

    Abstract Generating minimum-time and secure software update schedules for controllable power loads in low-voltage distribution grids is a problem of increasing importance because of accelerating integration of renewable energy resources. In this paper, we call such a problem the software update rollout problem and present a mathematical framework for its modeling and solution. First, it is shown that this problem can be understood as a multi-resource bin packing problem. Then several approximate and exact solution schemes are discussed, the former using greedy approximate algorithms and the later using integer linear programming (ILP). These schemes are then evaluated on benchmark networks of realistic size (CIGRE-LV, TPC 83-bus distribution system). Experimental results show that both greedy and ILP approaches perform well for real-time purposes. In particular, the greedy approach can attain high-quality approximate solutions almost instantly while the ILP approach can not only provide solutions with certifiable optimality gaps but also include extra constraints (e.g., precedence) as needed.

    In this paper the problem of finding the sparsest (i.e., minimum cardinality) critical $k$-tuple including one arbitrarily specified measurement is considered. The solution to this problem can be used to identify weak points in the measurement set, or aid the placement of new meters. The critical $k$-tuple problem is a combinatorial generalization of the critical measurement calculation problem. Using topological network observability results, this paper proposes an efficient and accurate approximate solution procedure for the considered problem based on solving a minimum-cut (Min-Cut) problem and enumerating all its optimal solutions. It is also shown that the sparsest critical $k$-tuple problem can be formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. This MILP problem can be solved exactly using available solvers such as CPLEX and Gurobi. A detailed numerical study is presented to evaluate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed Min-Cut and MILP calculations.

    Smart grid proactively uses the state-of-the-art technologies in communications, computing, and control to improve efficiency, reliability, sustainability, and stability of the electrical grid. In particular, distribution networks are expected to undergo dramatic changes by incorporating a large number of sensors and thousands of controllable devices such as distributed generators, batteries and flexible loads. To be able to efficiently operate such complex large-scale systems, new sets of control and optimization tools should be developed. On a slow time scale, optimization theory plays a major role in solving various large-scale decision-making problems for future power transmission and distribution systems. One major challenge is the design of computational methods for handling fairly detailed power system models that often include continuous and discrete nonlinearities. It is also important to develop distributed computation techniques to shift the computation from a centralized platform to many computing devices.

In particular, distribution networks are expected to undergo dramatic changes by incorporating a large number of sensors and thousands of controllable devices such as distributed generators, batteries and flexible loads. To be able to efficiently operate such complex large-scale systems, new sets of control and optimization tools should be developed. On a slow time scale, optimization theory plays a major role in solving various large-scale decision-making problems for future power transmission and distribution systems. One major challenge is the design of computational methods for handling fairly detailed power system models that often include continuous and discrete nonlinearities. It is also important to develop distributed computation techniques to shift the computation from a centralized platform to many computing devices.

    This paper shows how structured model order reduction can be applied to power systems. For power systems divided into a study area and an external area, the proposed algorithm can be used to reduce the external area to a low order linear system, while retaining the nonlinear description of the study system. The reduction of the external area is done in such a way that the study system is affected as little as possible. It is shown that a lower model order can be attained when information about the study system is taken into consideration, than if the external system is reduced independently of it.

    In this paper a procedure to detect and isolate data attacks on power network power flow measurements is proposed. This method can be used in conjunction with available bad data detection (BDD) methods to isolate multiple bad data which are otherwise difficult to handle. The proposed procedure relies on secure measurements of bus voltage magnitudes to define a measurement residual using potentially compromised active and reactive power flow measurements on transmission lines. The proposed residual can be calculated in real-time. In addition, the component of the proposed residual on any particular line depends only locally on the component of the data attack on the same line. This makes the proposed residual well-suited for distributed data attack isolation in large-scale power networks. Furthermore, it can be shown that the proposed procedure becomes more effective when measurements from multiple time instances can be utilized. A detailed numerical case study on the IEEE 14-bus benchmark system demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.
