Caballero;Abstract The kinetics of thermal decomposition of two lignocellulosic materials (olive stones and almond shells) were studied using dynamic TG at heating rates between 2 and 25 K min−1 at atmospheric pressure. Different kinetic models were tested, that consider that the thermal decomposition of lignocellulosic materials can be grouped in two or three overall processes (each one being the result of a great number of reactions) corresponding to the hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin decompositions. The best results were obtained with a model that considers that the biomass decomposes via three independent reactions. There is a qualitative agreement between the decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin with the peaks observed in the TG-DTG diagram, but the simple addition of the kinetics of isolated compounds cannot satisfactorily reproduce the kinetic behaviour of any raw material, and consequently some interactions must exist between the fractions considered.

Gómez; Antonio Marcilla;Abstract Catalytic pyrolysis of plastic wastes is a promising recycling alternative to the disposal methods currently used for this type of residues (i.e. land filling or energetic valorisation). In order to optimize the yields of compounds obtained with this treatment, the knowledge of the parameters’ influence on the degradation process is of great interest. Pyrolysis temperature and volatiles residence time are the most influential variables in the process, since they affect the primary as well as the secondary reactions. In this work, the pyrolysis temperature effect on the primary and secondary reactions of the thermal and HZSM-5 catalyzed pyrolysis of HDPE is reported and evaluated, in the range 500–800 °C. For this purpose, two different equipments have been used, i.e. a flash coil pyrolyzer (pyroprobe 1000), that allows us to study the primary products, since the extent of secondary reactions can be neglected, and a fluidized bed reactor, where the extent of the secondary reactions is significant. The results of the present study show that 1-hexene is the major product obtained when primary thermal cracking reactions are mainly taking place. However, the major compounds obtained when thermal secondary reactions are present in larger extension are propene at low temperatures and ethene at high temperatures. In catalytic pyrolysis, the effect of HZSM-5 is clearly evident at all temperatures evaluated, increasing the volatile yields in both equipments used. The influence of this catalyst is more significant in the primary cracking reactions showing an increase of the volatile compounds with the degradation temperature. In this case, propene is the main volatile product obtained reaching a yield of 30.6% at the highest temperature evaluated. When the presence of the secondary reactions is evident, using a fluidized bed reactor, the combined effect of generation and possible cracking reactions leads to a low-dependent product distribution on the degradation temperature, propene being the main volatile compound in the range of temperatures studied. It has been observed that branched hydrocarbons are formed mainly from secondary reactions and are quickly destroyed by increasing the temperature. In the zeolite catalyzed pyrolysis the differences between the yields obtained in both equipments are lower than in the thermal case.

García;A kinetic study of the pyrolysis of municipal solid waste (MSW) was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Different runs were performed at heating rates between 1.5 and 200°C min−1. A correlation model that considers two independent reactions was applied to simulate the process. The values of the kinetic parameters were optimised and compared with the results obtained from the correlation of the experiments carried out in a Pyroprobe 1000, where the nominal heating rate was 20 000°C s−1. In view of the results obtained, a theoretical analysis was developed with reference to the influence of the heating rate and the heat transfer on the kinetic parameters that can be obtained from the experimental data.

The MSW pellets are discharged onto the fluidized sand bed; in the upper part of the reactor the volatiles evolved from primary reactions underwent secondary cracking reactions. A correlation model was applied to simulate the primary and secondary reactions as well as the heat transfer process. The experimental yields of the total gases obtained in 49 runs performed at 700, 750, 800 and 850 °C fitted satisfactorily using a flexible simplex method. The values of the kinetic parameters of secondary reaction, the heat transfer coefficient from the bed to the sample and the ratio “secondary gas yield/primary tars yield” were optimised. The values of the secondary kinetic parameters, which showed a great inter-relation with those of the primary reactions, were within the range of the values proposed in literature for other biomass tar cracking.

The catalytic pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) over the HZSM5 catalyst in a batch reactor has been studied, and an analysis of the evolution of the products generated with temperature is presented. As expected, the catalyst favored the formation of gaseous compounds. The composition of the products obtained depended upon the polyethylene structure, especially at the beginning of the degradation process. Initially during the catalytic cracking of LDPE, olefins were the major compounds obtained in both the gaseous and condensed phases. As the temperature was increased, the composition of the gases remained constant, whereas in the condensed fraction, the olefins yield decreased, resulting in aromatics being the compounds predominantly generated. With HDPE, a greater quantity of paraffins and aromatics formed at the beginning of the decomposition process in the gaseous and condensed products, respectively, as compared to LDPE. Microalgae have many applications, such as biodiesel production or food supplement. Depending on the application, the optimization of certain fractions of the biochemical composition (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) is required. Therefore, samples obtained in different culture conditions must be analyzed in order to compare the content of such fractions. Nevertheless, traditional methods necessitate lengthy analytical procedures with prolonged sample turn-around times. Results of the biochemical composition of Nannochloropsis oculata samples with different protein, carbohydrate and lipid contents obtained by conventional analytical methods have been compared to those obtained by thermogravimetry (TGA) and a Pyroprobe device connected to a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer detector (Py-GC/MS), showing a clear correlation. These results suggest a potential applicability of these techniques as fast and easy methods to qualitatively compare the biochemical composition of microalgal samples.

The most widely used models found in the literature which are usually applied in isothermal conditions were tested. Important differences were found between models that take into account the formation of an activated cellulose and those that assume the direct decomposition of cellulose to char, tar and gases. The best agreement between experimental and calculated values was found with models which consider the formation of activated cellulose and take into account the different behaviour at low and high temperatures. The simultaneous correlation of all the experimental data obtained in different conditions is proposed as a technique to prevent compensating effects between the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy, and thus to avoid erroneous conclusions.

Nowadays, the use of tobacco biomass as an energy source is being valued. Therefore, it is important to know the processes that take place during combustion and pyrolysis, as well as the substances that are formed. In this work, we study the compounds obtained during the decomposition of NNN as a function of temperature under inert and oxidant atmospheres. Moreover, the effect of the addition of SBA-15 and MCM-41 is analyzed. Two different techniques, i.e., TG/FTIR (low heating rates) and EGA Py/GC/MS (high heating rates), are used. At low temperatures NNN is almost unaltered, but it is volatilized and dragged by the carrier gas. When increasing the temperature, decomposition takes place, with pyridines being one of the most abundant compounds observed. The main compound obtained during the pyrolysis are 3- pyridinecarbonitrile, myosmine and nornicotine, which are precursors of NNN. When NNN is mixed with SBA-15, the decomposition of the NNN nitrosamine is favored at low temperatures where the yield in pyridine compounds increases. The catalysts modify the temperature and intensity of the processes, especially under an oxidative atmosphere where the residue is oxidized, showing a third loss of weight. These materials modify the compositions of gases, mainly under an O2 atmosphere (3-pyridinecarbonitrile and myosmine showed the major effect). SBA-15 with fibrous morphology obtains the best reductions at pyrolysis conditions.

Caballero;Abstract The kinetics of thermal decomposition of two lignocellulosic materials (olive stones and almond shells) were studied using dynamic TG at heating rates between 2 and 25 K min−1 at atmospheric pressure. Different kinetic models were tested, that consider that the thermal decomposition of lignocellulosic materials can be grouped in two or three overall processes (each one being the result of a great number of reactions) corresponding to the hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin decompositions. The best results were obtained with a model that considers that the biomass decomposes via three independent reactions. There is a qualitative agreement between the decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin with the peaks observed in the TG-DTG diagram, but the simple addition of the kinetics of isolated compounds cannot satisfactorily reproduce the kinetic behaviour of any raw material, and consequently some interactions must exist between the fractions considered.

Gómez; Antonio Marcilla;Abstract Catalytic pyrolysis of plastic wastes is a promising recycling alternative to the disposal methods currently used for this type of residues (i.e. land filling or energetic valorisation). In order to optimize the yields of compounds obtained with this treatment, the knowledge of the parameters’ influence on the degradation process is of great interest. Pyrolysis temperature and volatiles residence time are the most influential variables in the process, since they affect the primary as well as the secondary reactions. In this work, the pyrolysis temperature effect on the primary and secondary reactions of the thermal and HZSM-5 catalyzed pyrolysis of HDPE is reported and evaluated, in the range 500–800 °C. For this purpose, two different equipments have been used, i.e. a flash coil pyrolyzer (pyroprobe 1000), that allows us to study the primary products, since the extent of secondary reactions can be neglected, and a fluidized bed reactor, where the extent of the secondary reactions is significant. The results of the present study show that 1-hexene is the major product obtained when primary thermal cracking reactions are mainly taking place. However, the major compounds obtained when thermal secondary reactions are present in larger extension are propene at low temperatures and ethene at high temperatures. In catalytic pyrolysis, the effect of HZSM-5 is clearly evident at all temperatures evaluated, increasing the volatile yields in both equipments used. The influence of this catalyst is more significant in the primary cracking reactions showing an increase of the volatile compounds with the degradation temperature. In this case, propene is the main volatile product obtained reaching a yield of 30.6% at the highest temperature evaluated. When the presence of the secondary reactions is evident, using a fluidized bed reactor, the combined effect of generation and possible cracking reactions leads to a low-dependent product distribution on the degradation temperature, propene being the main volatile compound in the range of temperatures studied. It has been observed that branched hydrocarbons are formed mainly from secondary reactions and are quickly destroyed by increasing the temperature. In the zeolite catalyzed pyrolysis the differences between the yields obtained in both equipments are lower than in the thermal case.

In view of the results obtained, a theoretical analysis was developed with reference to the influence of the heating rate and the heat transfer on the kinetic parameters that can be obtained from the experimental data.

The MSW pellets are discharged onto the fluidized sand bed; in the upper part of the reactor the volatiles evolved from primary reactions underwent secondary cracking reactions. A correlation model was applied to simulate the primary and secondary reactions as well as the heat transfer process. The experimental yields of the total gases obtained in 49 runs performed at 700, 750, 800 and 850 °C fitted satisfactorily using a flexible simplex method. The values of the kinetic parameters of secondary reaction, the heat transfer coefficient from the bed to the sample and the ratio “secondary gas yield/primary tars yield” were optimised. The values of the secondary kinetic parameters, which showed a great inter-relation with those of the primary reactions, were within the range of the values proposed in literature for other biomass tar cracking.

The catalytic pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) over the HZSM5 catalyst in a batch reactor has been studied, and an analysis of the evolution of the products generated with temperature is presented. As expected, the catalyst favored the formation of gaseous compounds. The composition of the products obtained depended upon the polyethylene structure, especially at the beginning of the degradation process. Initially during the catalytic cracking of LDPE, olefins were the major compounds obtained in both the gaseous and condensed phases. As the temperature was increased, the composition of the gases remained constant, whereas in the condensed fraction, the olefins yield decreased, resulting in aromatics being the compounds predominantly generated. Microalgae have many applications, such as biodiesel production or food supplement. Depending on the application, the optimization of certain fractions of the biochemical composition (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) is required. Therefore, samples obtained in different culture conditions must be analyzed in order to compare the content of such fractions. Nevertheless, traditional methods necessitate lengthy analytical procedures with prolonged sample turn-around times. Results of the biochemical composition of Nannochloropsis oculata samples with different protein, carbohydrate and lipid contents obtained by conventional analytical methods have been compared to those obtained by thermogravimetry (TGA) and a Pyroprobe device connected to a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer detector (Py-GC/MS), showing a clear correlation. These results suggest a potential applicability of these techniques as fast and easy methods to qualitatively compare the biochemical composition of microalgal samples.

The most widely used models found in the literature which are usually applied in isothermal conditions were tested. Important differences were found between models that take into account the formation of an activated cellulose and those that assume the direct decomposition of cellulose to char, tar and gases. The best agreement between experimental and calculated values was found with models which consider the formation of activated cellulose and take into account the different behaviour at low and high temperatures. The simultaneous correlation of all the experimental data obtained in different conditions is proposed as a technique to prevent compensating effects between the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy, and thus to avoid erroneous conclusions.

Nowadays, the use of tobacco biomass as an energy source is being valued. Therefore, it is important to know the processes that take place during combustion and pyrolysis, as well as the substances that are formed. In this work, we study the compounds obtained during the decomposition of NNN as a function of temperature under inert and oxidant atmospheres. Moreover, the effect of the addition of SBA-15 and MCM-41 is analyzed. Two different techniques, i.e., TG/FTIR (low heating rates) and EGA Py/GC/MS (high heating rates), are used. At low temperatures NNN is almost unaltered, but it is volatilized and dragged by the carrier gas. When increasing the temperature, decomposition takes place, with pyridines being one of the most abundant compounds observed. The main compound obtained during the pyrolysis are 3- pyridinecarbonitrile, myosmine and nornicotine, which are precursors of NNN. When NNN is mixed with SBA-15, the decomposition of the NNN nitrosamine is favored at low temperatures where the yield in pyridine compounds increases. The catalysts modify the temperature and intensity of the processes, especially under an oxidative atmosphere where the residue is oxidized, showing a third loss of weight. These materials modify the compositions of gases, mainly under an O2 atmosphere (3-pyridinecarbonitrile and myosmine showed the major effect). SBA-15 with fibrous morphology obtains the best reductions at pyrolysis conditions.
