    Abstract Blooms of dark pigmented microalgae accelerate glacier and ice sheet melting by reducing the surface albedo. However, the role of nutrient availability in regulating algal growth on the ice remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate glacier ice algae on the Greenland Ice Sheet, providing single-cell measurements of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios and assimilation rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium and nitrate following nutrient amendments. The single-cell analyses reveal high C:N and C:P atomic ratios in algal biomass as well as intracellular P storage. DIC assimilation rates are not enhanced by ammonium, nitrate, or phosphate addition. Our combined results demonstrate that glacier ice algae can optimise nutrient uptake, facilitating the potential colonization of newly exposed bare ice surfaces without the need for additional nutrient inputs. This adaptive strategy is particularly important given accelerated climate warming and the expansion of melt areas on the Greenland Ice Sheet.

    It is fundamental to understand the development of Zygnematophycean (Streptophyte) micro-algal blooms within Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) supraglacial environments, given their potential to significantly impact both physical (melt) and chemical (carbon and nutrient cycling) surface characteristics. Here, we report on a space-for-time assessment of a GrIS ice algal bloom, achieved by sampling an ∼85 km transect spanning the south-western GrIS bare ice zone during the 2016 ablation season. Cell abundances ranged from 0 to 1.6 × 104 cells ml-1, with algal biomass demonstrated to increase in surface ice with time since snow line retreat (R2 = 0.73, P < 0.05). A suite of light harvesting and photo-protective pigments were quantified across transects (chlorophylls, carotenoids and phenols) and shown to increase in concert with algal biomass. Ice algal communities drove net autotrophy of surface ice, with maximal rates of net production averaging 0.52 ± 0.04 mg C l-1 d-1, and a total accumulation of 1.306 Gg C (15.82 ± 8.14 kg C km-2) predicted for the 2016 ablation season across an 8.24 × 104 km2 region of the GrIS. By advancing our understanding of ice algal bloom development, this study marks an important step toward projecting bloom occurrence and impacts into the future.

    AbstractSea ice continues to decline across many regions of the Arctic, with remaining ice becoming increasingly younger and more dynamic. These changes alter the habitats of microbial life that live within the sea ice, which support healthy functioning of the marine ecosystem and provision of resources for human-consumption, in addition to influencing biogeochemical cycles (e.g. air–sea CO2 exchange). With the susceptibility of sea ice ecosystems to climate change, there is a pressing need to fill knowledge gaps surrounding sea ice habitats and their microbial communities. Of fundamental importance to this goal is the development of new methodologies that permit effective study of them. Based on outcomes from the DiatomARCTIC project, this paper integrates existing knowledge with case studies to provide insight on how to best document sea ice microbial communities, which contributes to the sustainable use and protection of Arctic marine and coastal ecosystems in a time of environmental change.

    AbstractThe Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets cover ~\n10% of global land surface, but are rarely considered as active components of the global iron cycle. The ocean waters around both ice sheets harbour highly productive coastal ecosystems, many of which are iron limited. Measurements of iron concentrations in subglacial runoff from a large Greenland Ice Sheet catchment reveal the potential for globally significant export of labile iron fractions to the near-coastal euphotic zone. We estimate that the flux of bioavailable iron associated with glacial runoff is 0.40–2.54 Tg per year in Greenland and 0.06–0.17 Tg per year in Antarctica. Iron fluxes are dominated by a highly reactive and potentially bioavailable nanoparticulate suspended sediment fraction, similar to that identified in Antarctic icebergs. Estimates of labile iron fluxes in meltwater are comparable with aeolian dust fluxes to the oceans surrounding Greenland and Antarctica, and are similarly expected to increase in a warming climate with enhanced melting.

    The Ancylonema genus includes the most-documented microalgae on glaciers and ice sheets worldwide. There is significant interest in these microalgae in the context of climate change, considering their role in lowering surface ice albedo and acceleration of ice melt. However, currently, no cultures of the two closely related species A. nordenskiöldii or A. alaskanum have been established, restricting our ability to study these globally important species under laboratory conditions. We established and kept cultures of Ancylonema sp. alive for up to 2 years, by testing and optimizing different growth media and parameters. Maximum growth was achieved when using 1:100 diluted media with soil extract and low light intensity (300 µmol m−2s−1). However, as a consequence of incubation in lab conditions, some of the cultures lost their purpurogallin pigmentation and appeared green. Sanger sequencing of the ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) marker gene revealed a large genetic diversity (possibly cryptic) and confirmed the cultures as falling within the same clade as A. nordenskiöldii and A. alaskanum. Growth experiments allowed us to estimate a division rate of between 15 ± 5.2 and 21.9 ± 4.8 days. This is up to 4 times slower than current field-based estimates (3.75–5.5 days) and indicates that, despite the successful growth and long-term maintenance of the cultures, laboratory settings can be further improved to achieve optimal growth conditions.

    doi: 10.7185/geochemlet.1510 Glacial meltwater runoff is likely an important source of limiting nutrients for downstream primary producers. This has particular significance for regions surrounding the Greenland Ice Sheet, which discharges >400 km3 of meltwater annually. The Arctic is warming rapidly but the impact of higher discharge on nutrient export is unknown. We present four years of hydrological and geochemical data from a large Greenland Ice Sheet catchment that includes the two highest melt years on record (2010, 2012). Measurements reveal significant variation in dissolved solute (major ion) and estimated dissolved macronutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and silica) fluxes, with increases in higher melt years. Labile particulate macronutrients dominate nutrient export, accounting for ~50 % of nitrogen and >80 % of both phosphorus and silica. The response of ice sheet nutrient export to enhanced melting is largely controlled by particle bound nutrients, the future supply of which is uncertain. We propose that the Greenland Ice Sheet provides an underappreciated and annually dynamic source of nutrients for the polar oceans, with changes in meltwater discharge likely to impact marine primary productivity in future decades.     AbstractMelting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is a leading cause of land-ice mass loss and cryosphere-attributed sea level rise. Blooms of pigmented glacier ice algae lower ice albedo and accelerate surface melting in the ice sheet’s southwest sector. Although glacier ice algae cause up to 13% of the surface melting in this region, the controls on bloom development remain poorly understood. Here we show a direct link between mineral phosphorus in surface ice and glacier ice algae biomass through the quantification of solid and fluid phase phosphorus reservoirs in surface habitats across the southwest ablation zone of the ice sheet. We demonstrate that nutrients from mineral dust likely drive glacier ice algal growth, and thereby identify mineral dust as a secondary control on ice sheet melting.

McCutcheon using a Hitatchi 8230 SEM at the Leeds Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy Centre (LEMAS), University of Leeds, UK. X-ray diffraction was conducted by J. McCutcheon using a Bruker D8 Advance Eco X-ray diffractometer (Bruker, Billerica, USA) with a Cu source at the University of Leeds, UK. ICP-MS was conducted by S. Reid using a Thermo Fisher iCAPQc ICP-MS at the University of Leeds, UK. Phosphorus was measured either using segmented flow-injection analysis (AutoAnalyser3, Seal Analytical), or for samples containing lower concentrations of phosphorus by A. Stockdale, using a 100 cm WPI Liquid Waveguide Capillary Cell in conjunction with an Ocean Optics USB2000+ spectrophotometer. Both analyses were conducted at the University of Leeds, UK. Ion chromatography was conducted by A. Viet-Hillebrand at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany using a conductivity detector on a Dionex ICS 3000 system, equipped with an AS 11 HC Dionex analytical column. Carbon and nitrogen analysis was conducted by B. Plessen and S. Pinkerneil at German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany using an NC2500 Carlo Erba elemental analyzer. Amplicon libraries were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq using paired 300-bp reads at the University of Bristol Genomics Facility, Bristol, UK. Rare Earth element concentrations were measured by A. Vanderstraeten using HR-ICP-MS (ThermoFisher Element 2) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. Particle size distribution was measured by K. Jurkschat using a DC24000 CPS disc centrifuge at Oxford Materials Characterisation Services, Oxford, UK.

    Abstract Blooms of dark pigmented microalgae accelerate glacier and ice sheet melting by reducing the surface albedo. However, the role of nutrient availability in regulating algal growth on the ice remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate glacier ice algae on the Greenland Ice Sheet, providing single-cell measurements of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios and assimilation rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium and nitrate following nutrient amendments. The single-cell analyses reveal high C:N and C:P atomic ratios in algal biomass as well as intracellular P storage. DIC assimilation rates are not enhanced by ammonium, nitrate, or phosphate addition. Our combined results demonstrate that glacier ice algae can optimise nutrient uptake, facilitating the potential colonization of newly exposed bare ice surfaces without the need for additional nutrient inputs. This adaptive strategy is particularly important given accelerated climate warming and the expansion of melt areas on the Greenland Ice Sheet.

    It is fundamental to understand the development of Zygnematophycean (Streptophyte) micro-algal blooms within Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) supraglacial environments, given their potential to significantly impact both physical (melt) and chemical (carbon and nutrient cycling) surface characteristics. Here, we report on a space-for-time assessment of a GrIS ice algal bloom, achieved by sampling an ∼85 km transect spanning the south-western GrIS bare ice zone during the 2016 ablation season. Cell abundances ranged from 0 to 1.6 × 104 cells ml-1, with algal biomass demonstrated to increase in surface ice with time since snow line retreat (R2 = 0.73, P < 0.05). A suite of light harvesting and photo-protective pigments were quantified across transects (chlorophylls, carotenoids and phenols) and shown to increase in concert with algal biomass. Ice algal communities drove net autotrophy of surface ice, with maximal rates of net production averaging 0.52 ± 0.04 mg C l-1 d-1, and a total accumulation of 1.306 Gg C (15.82 ± 8.14 kg C km-2) predicted for the 2016 ablation season across an 8.24 × 104 km2 region of the GrIS. By advancing our understanding of ice algal bloom development, this study marks an important step toward projecting bloom occurrence and impacts into the future.

    AbstractSea ice continues to decline across many regions of the Arctic, with remaining ice becoming increasingly younger and more dynamic. These changes alter the habitats of microbial life that live within the sea ice, which support healthy functioning of the marine ecosystem and provision of resources for human-consumption, in addition to influencing biogeochemical cycles (e.g. air–sea CO2 exchange). With the susceptibility of sea ice ecosystems to climate change, there is a pressing need to fill knowledge gaps surrounding sea ice habitats and their microbial communities. Of fundamental importance to this goal is the development of new methodologies that permit effective study of them. Based on outcomes from the DiatomARCTIC project, this paper integrates existing knowledge with case studies to provide insight on how to best document sea ice microbial communities, which contributes to the sustainable use and protection of Arctic marine and coastal ecosystems in a time of environmental change.

    AbstractThe Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets cover ~\n10% of global land surface, but are rarely considered as active components of the global iron cycle. The ocean waters around both ice sheets harbour highly productive coastal ecosystems, many of which are iron limited. Measurements of iron concentrations in subglacial runoff from a large Greenland Ice Sheet catchment reveal the potential for globally significant export of labile iron fractions to the near-coastal euphotic zone. We estimate that the flux of bioavailable iron associated with glacial runoff is 0.40–2.54 Tg per year in Greenland and 0.06–0.17 Tg per year in Antarctica. Iron fluxes are dominated by a highly reactive and potentially bioavailable nanoparticulate suspended sediment fraction, similar to that identified in Antarctic icebergs. Estimates of labile iron fluxes in meltwater are comparable with aeolian dust fluxes to the oceans surrounding Greenland and Antarctica, and are similarly expected to increase in a warming climate with enhanced melting.

    The Ancylonema genus includes the most-documented microalgae on glaciers and ice sheets worldwide. There is significant interest in these microalgae in the context of climate change, considering their role in lowering surface ice albedo and acceleration of ice melt. However, currently, no cultures of the two closely related species A. nordenskiöldii or A. alaskanum have been established, restricting our ability to study these globally important species under laboratory conditions. We established and kept cultures of Ancylonema sp. alive for up to 2 years, by testing and optimizing different growth media and parameters. Maximum growth was achieved when using 1:100 diluted media with soil extract and low light intensity (300 µmol m−2s−1). However, as a consequence of incubation in lab conditions, some of the cultures lost their purpurogallin pigmentation and appeared green. Sanger sequencing of the ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) marker gene revealed a large genetic diversity (possibly cryptic) and confirmed the cultures as falling within the same clade as A. nordenskiöldii and A. alaskanum. Growth experiments allowed us to estimate a division rate of between 15 ± 5.2 and 21.9 ± 4.8 days. This is up to 4 times slower than current field-based estimates (3.75–5.5 days) and indicates that, despite the successful growth and long-term maintenance of the cultures, laboratory settings can be further improved to achieve optimal growth conditions.

    doi: 10.7185/geochemlet.1510 Glacial meltwater runoff is likely an important source of limiting nutrients for downstream primary producers. This has particular significance for regions surrounding the Greenland Ice Sheet, which discharges >400 km3 of meltwater annually. The Arctic is warming rapidly but the impact of higher discharge on nutrient export is unknown. We present four years of hydrological and geochemical data from a large Greenland Ice Sheet catchment that includes the two highest melt years on record (2010, 2012). Measurements reveal significant variation in dissolved solute (major ion) and estimated dissolved macronutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and silica) fluxes, with increases in higher melt years. Labile particulate macronutrients dominate nutrient export, accounting for ~50 % of nitrogen and >80 % of both phosphorus and silica. The response of ice sheet nutrient export to enhanced melting is largely controlled by particle bound nutrients, the future supply of which is uncertain. We propose that the Greenland Ice Sheet provides an underappreciated and annually dynamic source of nutrients for the polar oceans, with changes in meltwater discharge likely to impact marine primary productivity in future decades.     AbstractMelting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is a leading cause of land-ice mass loss and cryosphere-attributed sea level rise. Blooms of pigmented glacier ice algae lower ice albedo and accelerate surface melting in the ice sheet’s southwest sector. Although glacier ice algae cause up to 13% of the surface melting in this region, the controls on bloom development remain poorly understood. Here we show a direct link between mineral phosphorus in surface ice and glacier ice algae biomass through the quantification of solid and fluid phase phosphorus reservoirs in surface habitats across the southwest ablation zone of the ice sheet. We demonstrate that nutrients from mineral dust likely drive glacier ice algal growth, and thereby identify mineral dust as a secondary control on ice sheet melting.

    This data publication is supplementary material to McCutcheon et al. (2021): "Melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is a leading cause of land-ice mass loss and cryosphere-attributed sea level rise. Blooms of pigmented glacier ice algae lower ice albedo and accelerate surface melting in the ice sheet���s southwest sector. Although glacier ice algae cause up to 13% of the surface melting in this region, the controls on bloom development remain poorly understood. Here we show a direct link between mineral phosphorus in surface ice and glacier ice algae biomass through the quantification of solid and fluid phase phosphorus reservoirs in surface habitats across the southwest ablation zone of the ice sheet. We demonstrate that nutrients from mineral dust likely drive glacier ice algal growth, and thereby identify mineral dust as a secondary control on ice sheet melting." Rare Earth Element (REE) analysis concentrations (��g��g-1) for the mineral dust in particulate samples. Scanning electron microscopy data was collected by J. McCutcheon using a Hitatchi 8230 SEM at the Leeds Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy Centre (LEMAS), University of Leeds, UK. X-ray diffraction was conducted by J. McCutcheon using a Bruker D8 Advance Eco X-ray diffractometer (Bruker, Billerica, USA) with a Cu source at the University of Leeds, UK. ICP-MS was conducted by S. Reid using a Thermo Fisher iCAPQc ICP-MS at the University of Leeds, UK. Phosphorus was measured either using segmented flow-injection analysis (AutoAnalyser3, Seal Analytical), or for samples containing lower concentrations of phosphorus by A. Stockdale, using a 100 cm WPI Liquid Waveguide Capillary Cell in conjunction with an Ocean Optics USB2000+ spectrophotometer. Both analyses were conducted at the University of Leeds, UK. Ion chromatography was conducted by A. Viet-Hillebrand at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany using a conductivity detector on a Dionex ICS 3000 system, equipped with an AS 11 HC Dionex analytical column. Carbon and nitrogen analysis was conducted by B. Plessen and S. Pinkerneil at German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany using an NC2500 Carlo Erba elemental analyzer. Amplicon libraries were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq using paired 300-bp reads at the University of Bristol Genomics Facility, Bristol, UK. Rare Earth element concentrations were measured by A. Vanderstraeten using HR-ICP-MS (ThermoFisher Element 2) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. Particle size distribution was measured by K. Jurkschat using a DC24000 CPS disc centrifuge at Oxford Materials Characterisation Services, Oxford, UK.
