Abstract A spatial analysis tool, a Decision Support (DS) model able to support decision-making processes related to forestry energy planning has been developed using ecological and economic parameters. In this paper, the relative performance of different forest energy chains were compared by using metrics such as net revenue from forest processes, break-even prices of wood fuels, and the price elasticity of the bioenergy supply. Working with different scenarios at a spatial level, the DS model can evaluate innovative technologies and traditional forest harvest and logistical chains across a range of products, such as firewood and woodchips. The spatial analysis lends itself easily to an analysis of the political and administrative constraints with respect to levels of administration and regional variables. As expected, applying the tool to the Tuscany region in Italy shows that local characteristics and the species composition of an area influence the economic outcome of different harvest and logistical chains. In particular, mixed species Mediterranean forests appear to be suitable for the implementation of innovative bioenergy production processes, such as Whole Tree Chipping.

Renewable energies are fundamental to future development. Such technologies reduce air pollution and improve air quality; however, they can generate other types of environmental problems, which must be investigated. The location of structures is one of these problems, which involves visual impacts and is a primary factor affecting public reaction. Our work was concerned with the visual impact and the alterations to the landscape made by wind turbines. The main goal was to establish the factors and attributes of a wind farm that determine the perception and aesthetic preferences of people, with a particular emphasis on representatives of Generation Y. This group was chosen because they represent the most dynamic, innovative, and creative social group. Thus, we proposed some design strategies to reduce the visual impact of wind turbines. Cities are human ecosystems. Understanding human ecology is important for designing and planning the built environment. The ability to respond to changes and adapt actions in a positive way helps determine the health of cities. Recently, many studies have highlighted the great potential of photographic data shared on the Flickr platform for the analysis of environmental perceptions in landscape and urban planning. Other research works used panoramic images from the Google Street View (GSV) web service to extract urban quality data. Although other researches have used social media to characterize human habitat from an emotional point of view, there is still a lack of knowledge of the correlation between environmental and physical variables of the city and visual perception, especially at a scale suitable for urban planning and design. In ecology, the environmental suitability of a territory for a given biological community is studied through species distribution models (SDM). In this work we have adopted the state of the art of SDM (the ensemble approach) to develop a methodology transferable to cities with different sizes and characteristics that uses data deriving from many sources available on a global scale: social media platform, Google internet services, shared geographical information, remote sensing and geomorphological data. The result of our application in the city of Livorno offers important information on the most significant variables for the conservation, planning and design of urban public spaces at the project scale. However, further research developments will be needed to test the model in cities of different sizes and geographic locations, integrate the model with other social media, other databases and with traditional surveys and improve the quality of indicators that can be derived from information shared on the Internet.

Abstract The European Community is dedicating a growing effort towards the development of renewable energy resources market and in particular to bio-fuels. General public is now aware green biomass represents a local renewable resource, which is widely available on the territory and exploitable under environmentally sustainable criteria for an ecologically sound economic development. Generally, the problem is to evaluate where to concentrate the institutional action for the promotion of the renewable energy sector. The goal of this paper is to develop a methodology able to analyse the feasibility of the biomass energy chain. In particular, we have analysed two aspects: the availability of resources and the enterprise structures. While the first aspect is tied to the local situation (forest and agricultural areas), the second aspect has a general relevance for the Italian mountain context.

AbstractClimate change is expected to have a significant impact on various economic sectors (IPCC, 2007) but an especially large one on agriculture because animal and crop growth are heavily influenced by weather conditions during their life cycles. In this paper, a multidisciplinary approach is developed that jointly uses economic and bio-climate models to evaluate the impact of climate change on viticulture in Tuscany (central Italy). Then a model is used to evaluate the likelihood of adoption of various adaptation strategies.

This article presents a quantitative review of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) at the regional scale in Europe. A text mining approach was applied to titles, abstracts, and keywords extracted from articles in the Scopus database. Different investigations, such as concept mapping and specificity analyses of textual corpus, were performed. Our search yielded a massive number of NWFP-related papers. Specifically, research was distributed in different countries, being more prevalent in the Mediterranean and Scandinavian contexts. Several NWFPs were analyzed, with mushrooms, resin, cork, and other forest fruit being the most common ones. Local socioeconomic improvement was one of the major aspects investigated in scientific literature. The proposed methodology applies specific scripts that can be updated, and the output of the present research can be compared with that of the future works. For instance, interest trends of products and methods can be investigated, and gap analyses performed. Finally, the potential implications of this review for researchers and stakeholders are discussed.

Wine tourism is one of the best opportunities for rural development, but because it is partially exposed to climatic conditions, it is a climate-vulnerable tourism activity. However, an understanding of the potential impacts of global climate change on this popular activity remains limited. This study proposes a new methodology that combines current daily gridded climate data from the E-OBS project with big spatiotemporal data from the Flickr photo-sharing platform through a generalized additive model This methodology was implemented to study the potential impacts on tourism flows due to climate change and to make predictions about the future using data from the CMIP5 project. We applied the methodology to 5 European wine tourism regions: Alsace (FR), Chianti (IT), La Rioja (SP), Langhe-Monferrato (IT), and Moselle (DE). Results show an increased probability of presence and increased deseasonalization of tourism in all study areas and an anticipation of peak presence from summer to spring in three of the five regions. We believe that these results can be useful for public and private stakeholders to adapt the offer of wine tourism services to changes in demand and to direct the organization of events such as festivals and thematic tours.

The climate of a city influences the ways in which its outdoor spaces are used. Especially, public spaces intended for use by pedestrians and cyclists, such as parks, squares, residential and commercial streets, and foot and cycle paths will be used and enjoyed more frequently if they have a comfortable and healthy climate. Due to the predicted global temperature increase, urban climate is likely to become more uncomfortable, especially in summer when an increase in heat stress is expected. Urban forestry has been proposed as one approach for mitigating the human health consequences of increased temperature resulting from climate change. The aims of the current research were to (a) provide a transferable methodology useful for analyzing the effect of urban trees on surface temperature reduction, particularly in public spaces, and (b) provide high-resolution urban mapping for adaptation strategies to climate change based on green space projects. To achieve the established aims, we developed a methodology that uses multisource data: LiDAR data, high-resolution Landsat imagery, global climate model data from CMIP5 (IPPC Fifth Assessment), and data from meteorological stations. The proposed model can be a useful tool for validating the efficiency of design simulations of new green spaces for temperature mitigation.

This work presents an integrated method for the optimisation of a regional wood-energy supply network. The model is based on a scalar system that comprises a demand point (district heating plants (DHP)) and bio-energy sources (supply basin (SB)), each of which is related to a biomass terminal. The objective of optimisation is based on both technical-logistics and environmental parameters. An SB is defined by the anisotropic weighted Voronoi tessellation methodology. The parameters are then aggregated to a multi-objective analysis that includes the optimisation of variables and compromise programming approach. Results permit the identification of the best supply chain organisation and the determination of the agro-forest energy districts where rural policy and intervention could be applied. The model was tested in the province of Florence (central Italy) to depict efficient scenarios for the fuelling of DHPs.

Abstract A spatial analysis tool, a Decision Support (DS) model able to support decision-making processes related to forestry energy planning has been developed using ecological and economic parameters. In this paper, the relative performance of different forest energy chains were compared by using metrics such as net revenue from forest processes, break-even prices of wood fuels, and the price elasticity of the bioenergy supply. Working with different scenarios at a spatial level, the DS model can evaluate innovative technologies and traditional forest harvest and logistical chains across a range of products, such as firewood and woodchips. The spatial analysis lends itself easily to an analysis of the political and administrative constraints with respect to levels of administration and regional variables. As expected, applying the tool to the Tuscany region in Italy shows that local characteristics and the species composition of an area influence the economic outcome of different harvest and logistical chains. In particular, mixed species Mediterranean forests appear to be suitable for the implementation of innovative bioenergy production processes, such as Whole Tree Chipping.

Renewable energies are fundamental to future development. Such technologies reduce air pollution and improve air quality; however, they can generate other types of environmental problems, which must be investigated. The location of structures is one of these problems, which involves visual impacts and is a primary factor affecting public reaction. Our work was concerned with the visual impact and the alterations to the landscape made by wind turbines. The main goal was to establish the factors and attributes of a wind farm that determine the perception and aesthetic preferences of people, with a particular emphasis on representatives of Generation Y. Cities are human ecosystems. Understanding human ecology is important for designing and planning the built environment. The ability to respond to changes and adapt actions in a positive way helps determine the health of cities. Recently, many studies have highlighted the great potential of photographic data shared on the Flickr platform for the analysis of environmental perceptions in landscape and urban planning. Other research works used panoramic images from the Google Street View (GSV) web service to extract urban quality data. Although other researches have used social media to characterize human habitat from an emotional point of view, there is still a lack of knowledge of the correlation between environmental and physical variables of the city and visual perception, especially at a scale suitable for urban planning and design. In ecology, the environmental suitability of a territory for a given biological community is studied through species distribution models (SDM). In this work we have adopted the state of the art of SDM (the ensemble approach) to develop a methodology transferable to cities with different sizes and characteristics that uses data deriving from many sources available on a global scale: social media platform, Google internet services, shared geographical information, remote sensing and geomorphological data. The result of our application in the city of Livorno offers important information on the most significant variables for the conservation, planning and design of urban public spaces at the project scale. However, further research developments will be needed to test the model in cities of different sizes and geographic locations, integrate the model with other social media, other databases and with traditional surveys and improve the quality of indicators that can be derived from information shared on the Internet.

Abstract The European Community is dedicating a growing effort towards the development of renewable energy resources market and in particular to bio-fuels. General public is now aware green biomass represents a local renewable resource, which is widely available on the territory and exploitable under environmentally sustainable criteria for an ecologically sound economic development. Generally, the problem is to evaluate where to concentrate the institutional action for the promotion of the renewable energy sector. The goal of this paper is to develop a methodology able to analyse the feasibility of the biomass energy chain. In particular, we have analysed two aspects: the availability of resources and the enterprise structures. While the first aspect is tied to the local situation (forest and agricultural areas), the second aspect has a general relevance for the Italian mountain context.

AbstractClimate change is expected to have a significant impact on various economic sectors (IPCC, 2007) but an especially large one on agriculture because animal and crop growth are heavily influenced by weather conditions during their life cycles. In this paper, a multidisciplinary approach is developed that jointly uses economic and bio-climate models to evaluate the impact of climate change on viticulture in Tuscany (central Italy). This article presents a quantitative review of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) at the regional scale in Europe. A text mining approach was applied to titles, abstracts, and keywords extracted from articles in the Scopus database. Different investigations, such as concept mapping and specificity analyses of textual corpus, were performed. Our search yielded a massive number of NWFP-related papers. Specifically, research was distributed in different countries, being more prevalent in the Mediterranean and Scandinavian contexts. Several NWFPs were analyzed, with mushrooms, resin, cork, and other forest fruit being the most common ones. Local socioeconomic improvement was one of the major aspects investigated in scientific literature. The proposed methodology applies specific scripts that can be updated, and the output of the present research can be compared with that of the future works. For instance, interest trends of products and methods can be investigated, and gap analyses performed. Finally, the potential implications of this review for researchers and stakeholders are discussed.

Wine tourism is one of the best opportunities for rural development, but because it is partially exposed to climatic conditions, it is a climate-vulnerable tourism activity. However, an understanding of the potential impacts of global climate change on this popular activity remains limited. This study proposes a new methodology that combines current daily gridded climate data from the E-OBS project with big spatiotemporal data from the Flickr photo-sharing platform through a generalized additive model This methodology was implemented to study the potential impacts on tourism flows due to climate change and to make predictions about the future using data from the CMIP5 project. We applied the methodology to 5 European wine tourism regions: Alsace (FR), Chianti (IT), La Rioja (SP), Langhe-Monferrato (IT), and Moselle (DE). Results show an increased probability of presence and increased deseasonalization of tourism in all study areas and an anticipation of peak presence from summer to spring in three of the five regions. We believe that these results can be useful for public and private stakeholders to adapt the offer of wine tourism services to changes in demand and to direct the organization of events such as festivals and thematic tours.

The climate of a city influences the ways in which its outdoor spaces are used. Especially, public spaces intended for use by pedestrians and cyclists, such as parks, squares, residential and commercial streets, and foot and cycle paths will be used and enjoyed more frequently if they have a comfortable and healthy climate. Due to the predicted global temperature increase, urban climate is likely to become more uncomfortable, especially in summer when an increase in heat stress is expected. Urban forestry has been proposed as one approach for mitigating the human health consequences of increased temperature resulting from climate change. The aims of the current research were to (a) provide a transferable methodology useful for analyzing the effect of urban trees on surface temperature reduction, particularly in public spaces, and (b) provide high-resolution urban mapping for adaptation strategies to climate change based on green space projects. To achieve the established aims, we developed a methodology that uses multisource data: LiDAR data, high-resolution Landsat imagery, global climate model data from CMIP5 (IPPC Fifth Assessment), and data from meteorological stations. The proposed model can be a useful tool for validating the efficiency of design simulations of new green spaces for temperature mitigation.

This work presents an integrated method for the optimisation of a regional wood-energy supply network. The model is based on a scalar system that comprises a demand point (district heating plants (DHP)) and bio-energy sources (supply basin (SB)), each of which is related to a biomass terminal. The objective of optimisation is based on both technical-logistics and environmental parameters. An SB is defined by the anisotropic weighted Voronoi tessellation methodology. The parameters are then aggregated to a multi-objective analysis that includes the optimisation of variables and compromise programming approach. Results permit the identification of the best supply chain organisation and the determination of the agro-forest energy districts where rural policy and intervention could be applied. The model was tested in the province of Florence (central Italy) to depict efficient scenarios for the fuelling of DHPs.
