The power grid is an essential infrastructure in any country, comprising thousands of kilometers of power lines that require periodic inspection and maintenance, carried out nowadays by human operators in risky conditions. To increase safety and reduce time and cost with respect to conventional solutions involving manned helicopters and heavy vehicles, the AERIAL-CORE project proposes the development of aerial robots capable of performing aerial manipulation operations to assist human operators in power lines inspection and maintenance, allowing the installation of devices, such as bird flight diverters or electrical spacers, and the fast delivery and retrieval of tools. This manuscript describes the goals and functionalities to be developed for safe local aerial manipulation, presenting the preliminary designs and experimental results obtained in the first year of the project.

The manual installation of electrical spacers between the two power line conductors is currently the only way to prevent this, but due to the high-voltage environment, this operation is extremely dangerous for a human worker. As a solution to automate this operation, the autonomous installation of electrical spacers using a robotic manipulator is proposed. For this purpose, a design of a special end effector for the robotic installation of electrical spacers is proposed. The end effector prototype was produced and tested under laboratory conditions and then used for the autonomous installation of spacers on power lines. Its localization with respect to the power lines is based on measurements of the magnetic field generated by the alternating currents flowing through the power lines. To verify the feasibility of the proposed solution under laboratory conditions, the proposed end effector equipped with magnetometers was developed and mounted on a 6-axis Schunk LWA 4p robotic arm. The implemented autonomous installation sequence was successfully verified using a robot and a laboratory mock-up of power lines.

One of the most promising solutions to extend drone power autonomy is the use of docking stations to support both landing and recharging of the drone. To this end, we introduce a novel wireless drone docking station with three commercial wireless charging modules. We have developed two independent units, both in mechanical and electrical aspects: the energy transmitting unit and the energy receiving unit. We have also studied the efficiency of wireless power transfer and demonstrated the advantages of connecting three receiver modules connected in series and parallel. We have achieved maximum output power of 96.5 W with a power transfer efficiency of 56.6% for the series connection of coils. To face these new challenges IT technologies and their application to environmental intelligent monitoring become into a powerful tool to set new policies and blueprints to contribute to social good. In the new H2020 project, WatchPlant will provide new tools for environmental intelligence monitoring by the use of plants as "well-being"sensors of the environment they inhabit. This will be possible by equipping plants with a net of communicated wireless self-powered sensors, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) to become plants into "biohybrid organisms"to test exposure-effects links between plant and the environment. It will become plants into a new tool to be aware of the environment status in a very early stage towards in-situ monitoring. Additionally, the system is devoted to be sustainable and energy-efficient thanks to the use of clean energy sources such as solar cells and a enzymatic biofuel cell (BFC) together with its self-deployment, self-awareness, adaptation, artificial evolution and the AI capabilities. In this concept paper, WatchPlant will envision how to face this challenge by joining interdisciplinary efforts to access the plant sap for energy harvesting and sensing purposes and become plants into "biohybrid organisms"to benefit social good in terms of environmental monitoring in urban scenarios. © 2021 Owner/Author. This paper presents a novel electromechanical recharging station that can be mounted on energized AC power line to charge the drone battery wirelessly without a need to modify the electrical infrastructure. The work shows a thorough analysis of the electrical and mechanical core components to build a flexible, lightweight and efficient recharging station that can be attached to a robotic arm. The work also discusses the recharging station design and its special robot end effector that mechanically couples the station with an aerial manipulator. Finally, the recharging station has been tested in the lab and in a real power line setup to validate its design and efficiency. The total achieved mass is 2300 grams with a harvesting efficiency of 77% at 250 A primary current.

The manual installation of electrical spacers between the two power line conductors is currently the only way to prevent this, but due to the high-voltage environment, this operation is extremely dangerous for a human worker. As a solution to automate this operation, the autonomous installation of electrical spacers using a robotic manipulator is proposed. For this purpose, a design of a special end effector for the robotic installation of electrical spacers is proposed. The end effector prototype was produced and tested under laboratory conditions and then used for the autonomous installation of spacers on power lines. Its localization with respect to the power lines is based on measurements of the magnetic field generated by the alternating currents flowing through the power lines. To verify the feasibility of the proposed solution under laboratory conditions, the proposed end effector equipped with magnetometers was developed and mounted on a 6-axis Schunk LWA 4p robotic arm. The implemented autonomous installation sequence was successfully verified using a robot and a laboratory mock-up of power lines.

One of the most promising solutions to extend drone power autonomy is the use of docking stations to support both landing and recharging of the drone. To this end, we introduce a novel wireless drone docking station with three commercial wireless charging modules. We have developed two independent units, both in mechanical and electrical aspects: the energy transmitting unit and the energy receiving unit. We have also studied the efficiency of wireless power transfer and demonstrated the advantages of connecting three receiver modules connected in series and parallel. We have achieved maximum output power of 96.5 W with a power transfer efficiency of 56.6% for the series connection of coils. To face these new challenges IT technologies and their application to environmental intelligent monitoring become into a powerful tool to set new policies and blueprints to contribute to social good. In the new H2020 project, WatchPlant will provide new tools for environmental intelligence monitoring by the use of plants as "well-being"sensors of the environment they inhabit. This will be possible by equipping plants with a net of communicated wireless self-powered sensors, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) to become plants into "biohybrid organisms"to test exposure-effects links between plant and the environment. It will become plants into a new tool to be aware of the environment status in a very early stage towards in-situ monitoring. Additionally, the system is devoted to be sustainable and energy-efficient thanks to the use of clean energy sources such as solar cells and a enzymatic biofuel cell (BFC) together with its self-deployment, self-awareness, adaptation, artificial evolution and the AI capabilities. In this concept paper, WatchPlant will envision how to face this challenge by joining interdisciplinary efforts to access the plant sap for energy harvesting and sensing purposes and become plants into "biohybrid organisms"to benefit social good in terms of environmental monitoring in urban scenarios. © 2021 Owner/Author. This paper presents a novel electromechanical recharging station that can be mounted on energized AC power line to charge the drone battery wirelessly without a need to modify the electrical infrastructure. The work shows a thorough analysis of the electrical and mechanical core components to build a flexible, lightweight and efficient recharging station that can be attached to a robotic arm. The work also discusses the recharging station design and its special robot end effector that mechanically couples the station with an aerial manipulator. Finally, the recharging station has been tested in the lab and in a real power line setup to validate its design and efficiency. The total achieved mass is 2300 grams with a harvesting efficiency of 77% at 250 A primary current.
