In recent years, sustainability concerns have gained increasing attention among countries and stakeholders worldwide. Towards the transition to sustainable rural development, the rural web framework (RWF) has become a consistent tool. Indicators from the RWF have been used to explore sustainable rural development for decision-making tasks, which improves the social, economic, and environmental performance of rural regions. However, the application of the RWF in studies is on the decline. Furthermore, there is a lack of literature reviews on the importance of the RWF and its relationship with different facets of sustainable development. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) (a) to explore how studies have used the RWF in the context of sustainable development and (b) to identify areas for further research. This study found that the RWF has mostly been used in developed countries, with fewer applications in developing countries. We suggest that there should be increased application of the RWF, particularly in developing countries, to broaden the rural web–sustainable development discourse and its relevance. This paper presents several areas where the indicators of the RWF can be applied to illustrate their relevance for policy decisions towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Les obstacles à l'adaptation des petits exploitants à l'aide de techniques quantitatives sont rares dans la littérature.Cette étude s'est concentrée sur les obstacles entravant les stratégies d'adaptation des petits exploitants de tomates dans le district d'Offinso Nord (OND) du Ghana.L' analyse a été effectuée à l'aide de l'analyse factorielle et du coefficient Alpha de Crombach.Un total de 378 petits exploitants de tomates ont été échantillonnés au hasard pour un entretien en face à face dans l'OND du Ghana.L' utilisation de l'approche analytique quantitative des facteurs pour analyser les obstacles à l'adaptation des agriculteurs aidera à fournir une orientation claire sur les moyens stratégiques de remédier aux contraintes impératives qui entravent les producteurs de tomates 'capacité d'adaptation pour accroître la sécurité alimentaire de la tomate dans les communautés productrices de tomates. D'après les résultats de l'analyse factorielle, l'étude conclut que les obstacles personnels, les obstacles institutionnels et du travail, les obstacles technologiques à l'irrigation, les obstacles au crédit et aux intrants agricoles inadéquats, le coût des obstacles fonciers, les obstacles aux installations et le manque de volonté politique sont des obstacles majeurs qui entravent les stratégies d'adaptation des producteurs de tomates. Using five selected farming communities as study sites, multiple datasets were obtained from primary and secondary sources. Participatory approaches together with questionnaires were used as data collection tools to quantify and qualify climate (temperature and rainfall) and nonclimatic variables (soil fertility using soil pH and organic matter) and crop production. The Mann–Kendall trend test results indicate a significant variation in annual rainfall for the 15-year period (1999 to 2013) with a relatively stable mean temperature variation in the Municipality. The results of the multiple regression indicate that climatic and nonclimatic factors, particularly rainfall, soil pH, and organic matter have a significant positive effect on maize, millet, and rice when other factors are held constant. We conclude that to ease the burden of climate on production, better irrigation facilities be provided for the Municipality and weather forecasting information on the pending growing season be made available to farmers to enable them take informed decision. Also, policy on climate adaptation should take into account the interaction of external drivers of climate and nonclimatic variables to better build farmers’ resilience for food security at the local level.

Smallholders' adaptation barriers using quantitative techniques are sparse in literature.This study focused on the barriers impeding smallholder tomato farmers' adaptation strategies in the Offinso North District (OND) of Ghana.The analysis was performed using factor analysis and Crombach's Alpha coefficient.A total of 378 smallholder tomato farmers were randomly sampled for a face-to-face interview in the OND of Ghana.Using the quantitative factor analytical approach to analyse farmers' adaptation barriers will help provide a clear direction on the strategic ways of addressing the imperative constraints that hinder tomato growers' adaptive capacity to increase tomato food security in tomato producing communities.From the factor analysis results, the study concludes that personal barriers, institutional and labour barriers, irrigation technology barriers, inadequate credit and farm inputs barriers, cost of land barriers, facility barriers and lack of political will barriers are major barriers that impede tomato farmers' adaptive strategies.Also, the study revealed that age (P < 0.05), gender (P < 0.05) and marital status (P < 0.05) are major determinants that influence the barriers tomato farmers encounter in their adaptive responses to climate variability.The findings point out the need for government and development partners including non-governmental organizations to enhance the adaptive capacities of farmers through the provision Lawrence Guodaar ABOUT THE AUTHORWe the authors are climate change and variability researchers with specific emphasis on impact and adaptations.We are also interested in employing quantitative methodological approach in understanding the linkages between climate change and food security in a sustained manner in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa.We try to understand climate variability adaptation practices aimed at improving the livelihood of rural peasant farmers. حواجز تكيف أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة باستخدام التقنيات الكمية قليلة في الأدبيات. ركزت هذه الدراسة على الحواجز التي تعيق استراتيجيات تكيف مزارعي الطماطم أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة في منطقة أوفنسو الشمالية (OND) في غانا. تم إجراء التحليل باستخدام تحليل العوامل ومعامل ألفا الخاص بكرومباخ. تم أخذ عينات عشوائية من 378 من مزارعي الطماطم أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة لإجراء مقابلة وجهاً لوجه في OND في غانا. سيساعد استخدام النهج التحليلي للعوامل الكمية لتحليل حواجز تكيف المزارعين في توفير توجيه واضح حول الطرق الاستراتيجية لمعالجة القيود الحتمية التي تعيق مزارعي الطماطم القدرة على التكيف لزيادة الأمن الغذائي للطماطم في المجتمعات المنتجة للطماطم .من نتائج تحليل العوامل، خلصت الدراسة إلى أن الحواجز الشخصية والحواجز المؤسسية والعمالية وحواجز تكنولوجيا الري وحواجز الائتمان والمدخلات الزراعية غير الكافية وتكلفة حواجز الأراضي وحواجز المرافق وعدم وجود حواجز الإرادة السياسية هي حواجز رئيسية تعيق استراتيجيات التكيف لدى مزارعي الطماطم .كما كشفت الدراسة أن العمر (P < 0.05) والجنس (P < 0.05) والحالة الاجتماعية (P < 0.05) هي محددات رئيسية تؤثر على الحواجز التي يواجهها مزارعو الطماطم في استجاباتهم التكيفية لتقلبات المناخ. تشير النتائج إلى الحاجة إلى قيام الحكومة وشركاء التنمية بما في ذلك المنظمات غير الحكومية بتعزيز القدرات التكيفية للمزارعين من خلال توفير لورانس جودار حول الاتحاد. نحن المؤلفون باحثون في مجال تغير المناخ وتقلباته مع التركيز بشكل خاص على التأثير والتكيف. نحن مهتمون أيضًا بتوظيف نهج منهجي كمي في فهم الروابط بين تغير المناخ والأمن الغذائي بطريقة مستدامة في غانا وأفريقيا جنوب الصحراء الكبرى. نحاول فهم ممارسات التكيف مع تقلب المناخ التي تهدف إلى تحسين سبل عيش الفلاحين الريفيين.

Using five selected farming communities as study sites, multiple datasets were obtained from primary and secondary sources. Participatory approaches together with questionnaires were used as data collection tools to quantify and qualify climate (temperature and rainfall) and nonclimatic variables (soil fertility using soil pH and organic matter) and crop production. The Mann–Kendall trend test results indicate a significant variation in annual rainfall for the 15-year period (1999 to 2013) with a relatively stable mean temperature variation in the Municipality. The results of the multiple regression indicate that climatic and nonclimatic factors, particularly rainfall, soil pH, and organic matter have a significant positive effect on maize, millet, and rice when other factors are held constant. We conclude that to ease the burden of climate on production, better irrigation facilities be provided for the Municipality and weather forecasting information on the pending growing season be made available to farmers to enable them take informed decision. Also, policy on climate adaptation should take into account the interaction of external drivers of climate and nonclimatic variables to better build farmers’ resilience for food security at the local level.
