We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double beta decay half-life of $^{130}$Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg$\cdot$y of TeO$_2$, the half-life is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2��}$ = [8.2 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.6 (syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{20}$y. This result is obtained after a detailed reconstruction of the sources responsible for the CUORE-0 counting rate, with a specific study of those contributing to the $^{130}$Te neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. Corrected typo in section 9: 3.43E5 Bq/kg should have read 3.43E-5 Bq/kg

AbstractThe CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay in $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched $$\hbox {Li}_{{2}}$$ Li 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 $$\hbox {MoO}_4$$ MoO 4 scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $$\sim 0.2$$ ∼ 0.2 kg, operated at $$\sim 20$$ ∼ 20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($$^{100}$$ 100 Mo exposure of 1.47 $$\hbox {kg} \times \hbox {year}$$ kg × year ) used to search for lepton number violation via 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay half-life of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν $$> {1.8}\times 10^{24}$$ > 1.8 × 10 24 year (stat. + syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\left<m_{\beta \beta }\right>$$ m β β $$<~{(0.28{-}0.49)} $$ < ( 0.28 - 0.49 ) eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

New results are presented of a search for double beta decay of Te isotopes carried out, using the bolometric technique, with an array of 20 natural tellurite crystals with a total cryogenic mass of ; 6.8 kilograms. The array has been run at a temperature around 10 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. No evidence has been found for neutrinoless double beta decay of 128 Te and 130 Te and upper limits of 8.6 = 10 22 and 1.44 = 10 23 years, respectively, have been achieved at the 90% confidence level. From the latter we obtain limits on the lepton non-conserving parameters which are the most restrictive ones in direct experiments after those on 76 Ge according to theoretical calculations. Results on two neutrino and majoron mediated decays are also presented and discussed with respect to those obtained for the same nuclei in geochemical experiments. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. An international collaboration has grown around the project of Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for a direct and calorimetric measurement of the electron antineutrino mass with sub‐electronvolt sensitivity.MARE is divided into two phases. The first phase (MARE‐1) consists of two independent experiments using the presently available detector technology to reach a sensitivity of mv⩽2eV/c2. The goal of the second phase (MARE‐2) is to achieve a sub‐electronvolt sensitivity on the neutrino mass.The Milan MARE‐1 experiment is based on arrays of silicon implanted microcalorimeters, produced by NASA/GSFC, with dielectric silver perrhenate absorbers, AgReO4. We present here the status of MARE‐1 in Milan which is starting data taking with 2 arrays (72 detectors). In this configuration a sensitivity of about 5 eV can be achieved in two years. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of 7.2× 6.1× 7.0 m3. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV/c to 7 GeV/c. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, dE/dx calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design. © 2020 CERN. We present the first search for the Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double $β$ decay ($0νββχ_0$) using scintillating cryogenic calorimeters. We analysed the CUPID-0 Phase I data using a Bayesian approach to reconstruct the background sources activities, and evaluate the potential contribution of the $^{82}$Se $0νββχ_0$. We considered several possible theoretical models which predict the existence of a Majoron-like boson coupling to the neutrino. The energy spectra arising from the emission of such bosons in the neutrinoless double $β$ decay have spectral indices $n=$ 1, 2, 3 or 7. We found no evidence of any of these decay modes, setting a lower limit (90% of credibility interval) on the half-life of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ yr in the case of $n=$ 1, 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 2, 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 3 and 2.2 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr for $n=$ 7. These are the best limits on the $0νββχ_0$ half-life of the $^{82}$Se, and demonstrate the potentiality of the CUPID-0 technology in this field.

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will be composed by one thousand TeO2 absorbers of 5×5×5 cm3 to be operated in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. CUORICINO, a reduced version of CUORE, as been already approved and funded and will be in operation since the beginning of next year. A description of the CUORE setup, of the mechanical structure and of the single detector performances is shown. The physics goals of CUORE are illustrated.

Microwave SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) multiplexing is a suitable technique for reading a large number of detector channels, using only a few connecting lines. In the HOLMESexperiment, this is based on inductively coupled rf-SQUIDs fed by TES (Transition Edge Sensors). Operation of the whole rf-SQUID chain is achieved with a single transmission line, by means of the recently introduced flux-ramp modulation technique—a sawtooth signal which allows signal reconstruction while operating the rf-SQUIDs in an open loop condition. Due to the crucial role of the sawtooth signal, it is very important that it does not suffer from ground-loop disturbances and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Introducing a transformer between the sawtooth source and the SQUID is very effective in suppressing disturbances. The sawtooth signal has both slow and fast components, and the frequency can vary between a few kHz up to a MHz, depending on the TES signal and SQUID characteristics. A transformer able to handle such a broad range of conditions must have very stringent characteristics and needs to be custom designed. Our solution exploits standard commercial and inexpensive transformers for LAN networks, stacked in a user-selectable number, to better fit the bandwidth requirements. A model that allows handling of the low- and high-frequency operating range has been developed.

We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double beta decay half-life of $^{130}$Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg$\cdot$y of TeO$_2$, the half-life is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2��}$ = [8.2 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.6 (syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{20}$y. This result is obtained after a detailed reconstruction of the sources responsible for the CUORE-0 counting rate, with a specific study of those contributing to the $^{130}$Te neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. AbstractThe CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay in $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched $$\hbox {Li}_{{2}}$$ Li 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 $$\hbox {MoO}_4$$ MoO 4 scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $$\sim 0.2$$ ∼ 0.2 kg, operated at $$\sim 20$$ ∼ 20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($$^{100}$$ 100 Mo exposure of 1.47 $$\hbox {kg} \times \hbox {year}$$ kg × year ) used to search for lepton number violation via 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay half-life of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν $$> {1.8}\times 10^{24}$$ > 1.8 × 10 24 year (stat. + syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\left<m_{\beta \beta }\right>$$ m β β $$<~{(0.28{-}0.49)} $$ < ( 0.28 - 0.49 ) eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

New results are presented of a search for double beta decay of Te isotopes carried out, using the bolometric technique, with an array of 20 natural tellurite crystals with a total cryogenic mass of ; 6.8 kilograms. The array has been run at a temperature around 10 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. No evidence has been found for neutrinoless double beta decay of 128 Te and 130 Te and upper limits of 8.6 = 10 22 and 1.44 = 10 23 years, respectively, have been achieved at the 90% confidence level. From the latter we obtain limits on the lepton non-conserving parameters which are the most restrictive ones in direct experiments after those on 76 Ge according to theoretical calculations. Results on two neutrino and majoron mediated decays are also presented and discussed with respect to those obtained for the same nuclei in geochemical experiments. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. An international collaboration has grown around the project of Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for a direct and calorimetric measurement of the electron antineutrino mass with sub‐electronvolt sensitivity.MARE is divided into two phases. The first phase (MARE‐1) consists of two independent experiments using the presently available detector technology to reach a sensitivity of mv⩽2eV/c2. The goal of the second phase (MARE‐2) is to achieve a sub‐electronvolt sensitivity on the neutrino mass.The Milan MARE‐1 experiment is based on arrays of silicon implanted microcalorimeters, produced by NASA/GSFC, with dielectric silver perrhenate absorbers, AgReO4. We present here the status of MARE‐1 in Milan which is starting data taking with 2 arrays (72 detectors). In this configuration a sensitivity of about 5 eV can be achieved in two years. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of 7.2× 6.1× 7.0 m3. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV/c to 7 GeV/c. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, dE/dx calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design. © 2020 CERN. We present the first search for the Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double $β$ decay ($0νββχ_0$) using scintillating cryogenic calorimeters. We analysed the CUPID-0 Phase I data using a Bayesian approach to reconstruct the background sources activities, and evaluate the potential contribution of the $^{82}$Se $0νββχ_0$. We considered several possible theoretical models which predict the existence of a Majoron-like boson coupling to the neutrino. The energy spectra arising from the emission of such bosons in the neutrinoless double $β$ decay have spectral indices $n=$ 1, 2, 3 or 7. We found no evidence of any of these decay modes, setting a lower limit (90% of credibility interval) on the half-life of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ yr in the case of $n=$ 1, 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 2, 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 3 and 2.2 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr for $n=$ 7. These are the best limits on the $0νββχ_0$ half-life of the $^{82}$Se, and demonstrate the potentiality of the CUPID-0 technology in this field.

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will be composed by one thousand TeO2 absorbers of 5×5×5 cm3 to be operated in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. CUORICINO, a reduced version of CUORE, as been already approved and funded and will be in operation since the beginning of next year. A description of the CUORE setup, of the mechanical structure and of the single detector performances is shown. The physics goals of CUORE are illustrated.

Microwave SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) multiplexing is a suitable technique for reading a large number of detector channels, using only a few connecting lines. In the HOLMESexperiment, this is based on inductively coupled rf-SQUIDs fed by TES (Transition Edge Sensors). Operation of the whole rf-SQUID chain is achieved with a single transmission line, by means of the recently introduced flux-ramp modulation technique—a sawtooth signal which allows signal reconstruction while operating the rf-SQUIDs in an open loop condition. Due to the crucial role of the sawtooth signal, it is very important that it does not suffer from ground-loop disturbances and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Introducing a transformer between the sawtooth source and the SQUID is very effective in suppressing disturbances. The sawtooth signal has both slow and fast components, and the frequency can vary between a few kHz up to a MHz, depending on the TES signal and SQUID characteristics. A transformer able to handle such a broad range of conditions must have very stringent characteristics and needs to be custom designed. Our solution exploits standard commercial and inexpensive transformers for LAN networks, stacked in a user-selectable number, to better fit the bandwidth requirements. A model that allows handling of the low- and high-frequency operating range has been developed.
