Digitalisation not only plays an important role in generating innovation in organisations, but also accelerates the digital transition, where digital technologies streamline processes, enabling faster and more efficient innovation. However, digital technologies can create tension between old values and new ones, making a so-called ādigital organisational cultureā a prerequisite for the success of these technologies. āOrganisational cultureā refers to an organisation's beliefs, values and attitudes, and how these influence the behaviour of its employees. āDigital organisational cultureā refers to aspects of organisational culture that specifically influence digitalisation, such as instilling a collaborative mindset, a clear orientation towards digital technology changes inside the company's culture, a culture of digital innovation and change and a transparent digital strategy. A recent review on the challenges of digitalisation in wind energy showed that organisational culture is one of the three main challenges. It was suggested that aspects of organisational culture such as open feedback culture, positive failure culture, creative culture, and innovation culture can have a large impact on digitalisation, e.g. by affecting how readily data is shared, how digital technologies are tried and tested, or how AI systems and digital twins are designed and used. We are not aware of any studies to understand organisational culture and digitalisation for the wind energy sector, although the above-mentioned review shows that there are some particular challenges in the wind energy sector, such as extreme siloed attitudes, lack of data sharing, lack of data and metadata standards, combined with a high volume and complexity of data coming off wind turbines, which warrant studying in more detail. Therefore, this work aims to understand how organisational culture can influence digitalisation in the wind energy sector, and is based on the results of the IEA Wind Task 43 Culture Questionnaire.

Satellite observations of the ocean surface, for example from Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR), provide information about the spatial wind variability over large areas. This is of special interest in the Mediterranean Sea, where spatial wind information is only provided by sparse buoys, often with long periods of missing data. Here, we focus on evaluating the use of SAR for offshore wind mapping. Preliminary results from the analysis of SAR-based ocean winds in Mediterranean areas show interesting large scale wind flow features consistent with results from previous studies using numerical models and space borne wind data i.e. scatterometers with lower resolution.

In particular, the Open Data (OD) policy aims at making digital assets, i.e. data, tools and workflows FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable) [1]: available to everyone in Europe. FAIR assets allow to reuse data in multiple applications which multiplies the data value thus optimizing the impact of projects funded by public money. NO PANIC: to respect Industry foregrounds Research data must be as open as possible and as closed s necessary! The wind energy community generally agrees that sharing assets would shorten the time from new ideas to innovation, making the work more efficient; BUT assets provide a competitive advantage, leading to a reluctance to sharing important data. WHAT TO DO THEN? Reliable measurements of vertical profiles of wind speed and direction are needed for testing models and methodologies of use for wind energy assessment. In particular, modelling complex terrain such as coastal areas is challenging due to the coastal discontinuity that is not accurately resolved in mesoscale numerical model. Here, we present a unique database from a coastal site in South Italy (middle of the Mediterranean area) where vertical profiles of wind speed and direction have been collected during a two-year period from a wind-lidar ZEPHIR-300Ā® at a coastal-suburban area. We show an overview analysis on two-year 10-minute averaged wind profiles.

Abstract. We present a study on the characteristics of the sea breeze flow at a coastal site located in the centre of the Mediterranean basin at the southern tip of Italy. This study is finalized to add new data on breeze circulations over a narrow peninsula and present a unique experimental coastal site at about 600 m from the coastline in a flat open area at the foot of a mountain chain located in a region of complex orography. We study the seasonal behaviour of the sea-land breeze circulation by analysing two years of hourly data of wind speed and direction, temperature, radiation and relative humidity from a surface meteorological station, eighteen-months data from a wind profiler, and two-year data from the ECMWF analysis. Results show that breezes dominate the local circulation and play a major role for the local climate. They are modulated by the season, through the sea-land temperature difference and the large-scale flow. The large-scale forcing acts in phase with the diurnal breeze and opposes the nocturnal breeze. In summer, the daytime difference between the land surface temperature and the SST (Sea Surface Temperature) reaches its maximum, while the nigh-time difference has its minimum. This causes a strong, frequent and intense diurnal breeze and a weak nocturnal breeze. In winter and fall the nocturnal difference between the sea and land surface temperature reaches a maximum value, while the diurnal difference is at its minimum value. This causes a strong, frequent and intense nocturnal breeze despite of the large-scale forcing that is usually opposed to local-scale flow.

Italian coastal sites have the advantage of favorable climatic conditions to use mixed renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. Harbors are safe places to install wind turbines where wind conditions are almost offshore. Space-borne remote sensing can provide information to determine solar and wind energy production potential cheaper than usual observational activity to identify and assess suitable areas. Here, we present a case study for both energy resources assessment from satellite in harbors.

High-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models can provide this information and the main ingredients for good simulations are: an accurate description of the coastline and a correct subgrid process parametrization permitting coastline discontinuities to be caught. To provide an as comprehensive as possible dataset on Mediterranean coastal area, an intensive experimental campaign was realized at a near-shore Italian site, using optical and acoustic ground-based remote sensing and surface instruments, under different weather characteristic and stability conditions; the campaign is also fully simulated by a NWP model. Integrating information from instruments responding to different atmospheric properties allowed for an explanation of the development of various patterns in the vertical structure of the atmosphere. Wind LiDAR measurements provided information of the internal boundary layer from the value of maximum height reached by the wind profile; a height between 80 and 130 m is often detected as an interface between two different layers. The NWP model was able to simulate the vertical wind profiles and the eight of the ABL.

Digitalisation not only plays an important role in generating innovation in organisations, but also accelerates the digital transition, where digital technologies streamline processes, enabling faster and more efficient innovation. However, digital technologies can create tension between old values and new ones, making a so-called ādigital organisational cultureā a prerequisite for the success of these technologies. āOrganisational cultureā refers to an organisation's beliefs, values and attitudes, and how these influence the behaviour of its employees. āDigital organisational cultureā refers to aspects of organisational culture that specifically influence digitalisation, such as instilling a collaborative mindset, a clear orientation towards digital technology changes inside the company's culture, a culture of digital innovation and change and a transparent digital strategy. A recent review on the challenges of digitalisation in wind energy showed that organisational culture is one of the three main challenges. It was suggested that aspects of organisational culture such as open feedback culture, positive failure culture, creative culture, and innovation culture can have a large impact on digitalisation, e.g. by affecting how readily data is shared, how digital technologies are tried and tested, or how AI systems and digital twins are designed and used. We are not aware of any studies to understand organisational culture and digitalisation for the wind energy sector, although the above-mentioned review shows that there are some particular challenges in the wind energy sector, such as extreme siloed attitudes, lack of data sharing, lack of data and metadata standards, combined with a high volume and complexity of data coming off wind turbines, which warrant studying in more detail. Therefore, this work aims to understand how organisational culture can influence digitalisation in the wind energy sector, and is based on the results of the IEA Wind Task 43 Culture Questionnaire.

Satellite observations of the ocean surface, for example from Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR), provide information about the spatial wind variability over large areas. This is of special interest in the Mediterranean Sea, where spatial wind information is only provided by sparse buoys, often with long periods of missing data. Here, we focus on evaluating the use of SAR for offshore wind mapping. Preliminary results from the analysis of SAR-based ocean winds in Mediterranean areas show interesting large scale wind flow features consistent with results from previous studies using numerical models and space borne wind data i.e. scatterometers with lower resolution.

Reliable measurements of vertical profiles of wind speed and direction are needed for testing models and methodologies of use for wind energy assessment. In particular, modelling complex terrain such as coastal areas is challenging due to the coastal discontinuity that is not accurately resolved in mesoscale numerical model. Here, we present a unique database from a coastal site in South Italy (middle of the Mediterranean area) where vertical profiles of wind speed and direction have been collected during a two-year period from a wind-lidar ZEPHIR-300Ā® at a coastal-suburban area. We show an overview analysis on two-year 10-minute averaged wind profiles.

Abstract. We present a study on the characteristics of the sea breeze flow at a coastal site located in the centre of the Mediterranean basin at the southern tip of Italy. This study is finalized to add new data on breeze circulations over a narrow peninsula and present a unique experimental coastal site at about 600 m from the coastline in a flat open area at the foot of a mountain chain located in a region of complex orography. We study the seasonal behaviour of the sea-land breeze circulation by analysing two years of hourly data of wind speed and direction, temperature, radiation and relative humidity from a surface meteorological station, eighteen-months data from a wind profiler, and two-year data from the ECMWF analysis. Results show that breezes dominate the local circulation and play a major role for the local climate. They are modulated by the season, through the sea-land temperature difference and the large-scale flow. The large-scale forcing acts in phase with the diurnal breeze and opposes the nocturnal breeze. In summer, the daytime difference between the land surface temperature and the SST (Sea Surface Temperature) reaches its maximum, while the nigh-time difference has its minimum. This causes a strong, frequent and intense diurnal breeze and a weak nocturnal breeze. In winter and fall the nocturnal difference between the sea and land surface temperature reaches a maximum value, while the diurnal difference is at its minimum value. This causes a strong, frequent and intense nocturnal breeze despite of the large-scale forcing that is usually opposed to local-scale flow.

Italian coastal sites have the advantage of favorable climatic conditions to use mixed renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. Harbors are safe places to install wind turbines where wind conditions are almost offshore. Space-borne remote sensing can provide information to determine solar and wind energy production potential cheaper than usual observational activity to identify and assess suitable areas. High-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models can provide this information and the main ingredients for good simulations are: an accurate description of the coastline and a correct subgrid process parametrization permitting coastline discontinuities to be caught. To provide an as comprehensive as possible dataset on Mediterranean coastal area, an intensive experimental campaign was realized at a near-shore Italian site, using optical and acoustic ground-based remote sensing and surface instruments, under different weather characteristic and stability conditions; the campaign is also fully simulated by a NWP model. Integrating information from instruments responding to different atmospheric properties allowed for an explanation of the development of various patterns in the vertical structure of the atmosphere. Wind LiDAR measurements provided information of the internal boundary layer from the value of maximum height reached by the wind profile; a height between 80 and 130 m is often detected as an interface between two different layers. The NWP model was able to simulate the vertical wind profiles and the eight of the ABL.
