The main goal of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is to explore alternative power exhaust solutions for DEMO. The principal objective is to mitigate the risk of a difficult extrapolation to fusion reactor of the conventional divertor based on detached conditions under test on ITER. The task includes several issues, as: (i) demonstrating a heat exhaust system capable of withstanding the large load of DEMO in case of inadequate radiated power fraction; (ii) closing the gaps in the exhaust area that cannot be addressed by present devices; (iii) demonstrating how the possible implemented solutions (e.g., advanced divertor configurations or liquid metals) can be integrated in a DEMO device. In view of these goals, the basic physical DTT parameters have been selected according to the following guidelines: (i) edge conditions as close as possible to DEMO in terms of dimensionless parameters; (ii) flexibility to test a wide set of divertor concepts and techniques; (iii) compatibility with bulk plasma performance; (iv) an upper bound of 500 M€ for the investment costs.

Unfortunately, supercapacitors are characterized by several non-ideal and complex behaviors that must be modeled and taken into account. One of the most relevant issue consists in the definition of the equivalent capacitance and then to the energy that can be potentially stored and practically used. This paper discusses the possible capacitance definitions and measurement methods, including the possible approaches to model the capacitance and its non-idealities.

The feasibility of getting "D" shaped plasma configurations in FTU, with a possible X point close to the first wall, has been investigated with the aim of achieving an H-mode regime in this machine. This regime could allow both evaluating the thermal effects on the liquid lithium limiter due to the possible Edge Localized Modes and studying the L-H transition properties in low recycling conditions due to the presence of lithium. An alternative design for the magnetic system in FTU has been also proposed, to realize an X-point inside the plasma chamber, close to the Liquid Lithium Limiter. Preliminary experiments with elongated configurations and limited ECRH additional heating power did not allowed approaching the L-H transition but they were used to develop a proper elongation control. This controller allowed guaranteeing the vertical stability in elongated configurations despite the reduced power available for the horizontal field coils in FTU. The elongation was stably keep over 1.2, while the lithium limiter was very close to the last close flux surface. Neither limiter damages nor plasma pollution were observed in these configurations. A possible alternative connection of the poloidal field coils in FTU is here proposed, with the aim of achieving a true X-point configuration with a magnetic single null well inside the plasma chamber and strike points on the lithium limiter. A preliminary assessment of this design allowed estimating the required power supply upgrade and showed its compatibility with the existing mechanical structure and cooling system, at least for plasmas with current up to 300 kA and flat-top duration up to 4 s.

Abstract This paper describes a system for the remote monitoring and control of complex stand-alone photovoltaic plants. In normal conditions, the system records and periodically reports the overall performances, whereas, in case of incorrect behaviors, it immediately informs the operators. Moreover, through appropriate instructions, users are able to modify some elements of the plant and the settings of the measurement system. In order to adapt the system to the specific operative conditions, several means of communications and plant configurations were investigated. However, for a more general, flexible and cost-effective implementation, the remote communications are based on the GSM network and, in particular, on the short text message service.

Towards the middle of the current century, the DEMOnstration power plant, DEMO, will start operating as the first nuclear fusion reactor capable of supplying its own loads and of providing electrical power to the European electrical grid. The presence of such a unique and peculiar facility in the European transmission system involves many issues that have to be faced in the project phase. This work represents the first study linking the operation of the nuclear fusion power plant DEMO to the actual requirements for its correct functioning as a facility connected to the power systems. In order to build this link, the present work reports the analysis of the requirements that this unconventional power-generating facility should fulfill for the proper connection and operation in the European electrical grid. Through this analysis, the study reaches its main objectives, which are the definition of the limitations of the current design choices in terms of power-generating capability and the preliminary evaluation of advantages and disadvantages that the possible configurations for the connection of the facility to the European electrical grid can have. In reference to the second objective, the work makes possible a first attempt at defining the features of the point of connection to the European grid, whose knowledge will be useful in the future, for the choice of the real construction site.

EU-DEMO is a European project, having the ambitious goal to be the first demonstrative power plant based on nuclear fusion. The electrical power that is expected to be produced is in the order of 700–800 MW, to be delivered via a connection to the European High Voltage electrical grid. The initiation and control of fusion processes, besides the problems related to the nuclear physics, need very complex electrical systems. Moreover, also the conversion of the output power is not trivial, especially because of the inherent discontinuity in the EU-DEMO operations. The present article concerns preliminary studies for the feasibility and realization of the nuclear fusion power plant EU-DEMO, with a special focus on the power electrical systems. In particular, the first stage of the study deals with the survey and analysis of the electrical loads, starting from the steady-state loads. Their impact is so relevant that could jeopardy the efficiency and the convenience of the plant itself. Afterwards, the loads are inserted into a preliminary internal distribution grid, sizing the main electrical components to carry out the power flow analysis, which is based on simulation models implemented in the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software.

Piovan; The EU DEMO Plant Electrical System (PES) main scopes are to supply all the plant electrical loads and to deliver to the Power Transmission Grid (PTG) the net electrical power generated. The studies on the PES during the Pre- Concept Design (PCD) Phase were mainly addressed to understand the possible issues, related to the special features both of the power generated, with respect to a power plant of the same size, and of the power to be supplied to the electrical loads. For this purpose, the approach was to start the design of the different PES components adopting technologies already utilized in fusion experiments and in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) to verify their applicability and identify possible limits when scaled to the DEMO size and applied to the specific pulsed operating conditions. This work is not completed, however several issues have been already identified related to the pulsed operation of the turbine generator, the large amount of recirculation power, the very high peaks of active power required for the plasma formation and control, the huge reactive power demand, if thyristor converter technology was adopted to supply the superconducting coils, etc.. The paper gives an overview on the features and scope of the PES and its subsystems, on the main achievements during the Pre- Concept Design (PCD) Phase, on the challenges for the development of the conceptual design in the next framework program and on the plan to face them.

On the electrified metro-transit system of Rome some monitoring activities have been performed, in order to estimate the harmonic impact and the entity of some power quality events (such as sags, voltage RMS fluctuations, short interruptions) in the system. During several continuous monitoring sessions, at every service entrance of the system, some significant voltage transients have been recorded whose origin has been identified in periodic switching operations, performed on the dedicated distribution network. These surges present a front that is quite close to the standard one for very fast front overvoltages associated to the SF6 switches, but their values are out of the typical range. For this reason it seemed to be necessary to analyze and to separate the contribution of the measurement system used for their evaluation. Since voltage measurements have been performed on the 20 kV bus-bar of the terminal electrical sub station, at the secondary of instrument voltage transformer, that is well known to be a critical component for the accuracy of power quality measurements, it became necessary to try to characterize its behaviour. The present paper reports the preliminary results of the tests and measurements performed in laboratory in order to characterize the instrument voltage transformer behaviour in high frequency domain.

The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility is expected to provide relevant contribution to the nuclear fusion research, in particular to the first fusion reactor DEMO. Even though the main scope of DTT is the study of the fusion power exhaust, DTT is a complete last-generation tokamak with many power supply (PS) systems. The PSs controlling the "poloidal" magnetic fields are particularly challenging not only due to the extremely high current amplitude, but also because the field must be continuously changed. Moreover, the PS system must be able to rapidly discharge the superconducting coils without interrupting the current flow. The benefits expected by the technologies adopted for the DTT poloidal PSs are described in this paper, in particular focusing on the impact on the external grid and on the energy consumption.
