In recent years the development of the LVDC distribution networks is under consideration. DC electrical distribution offers several advantages compared to AC in many applications, in particular in the presence of distributed generation and energy storage systems like high efficacy, flexibility and simple integrated to renewable sources. The DC distribution allows to integrate in a more efficient 'microgrid' different sources with DC/DC converters. The paper proposes an innovative model of microgrid architecture for aggregations of users able to share the power produced by common generators and energy services called power sharing model (PSM) using a DC bus, called power sharing link (PSL), that connects the common generators to the users. Each user has also an independent AC connection point with the distributor and a power electronic converter as Open Unified Power Quality Conditioner (Open UPQC), so PSM can be easily implemented in special power sharing contracts compliant with national regulatory systems. The produced energy is shared by PSL to the users through unidirectional power electronic device. In this way the common generator is like a multiple generator without power exchange between users and each user remain passive towards the distributor. Only the balance node of the DC bus assumes a role of active user.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is experiencing a surge in electricity demand, with power generation increasing 4 times in 25 years from 1990 to 2014. Despite the abundant primary renewable energy sources, the country has overlooked them in the past in national energy policies. However, in recent years, renewable energy has become a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s energy conservation policy due to climate changes, technological progress, economies of scale, and increased competitiveness in supply chains. The Saudi government has created the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) to develop national strategies for effectively utilizing renewable and nuclear energy. This paper reviews the current state of the art of the renewable energy technologies available on the market and evaluates the installation of renewable energy plants near Saudi Arabia’s East Coast for a new town, focusing on technical rather than economic aspects. The paper provides a wide review of the possible technical solutions to exploit the producibility of different renewable sources, considering the challenging climate conditions typical of desert areas. The analysis of a real case study shows a high availability of wind and solar irradiance that allow a net energy production of 354 and 129 GWh, respectively. In addition, the comparison between a typical ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) system and an emerging floating PV reveals that for the same installed power, occupied area, and environmental conditions, the latter has a 4% greater performance ratio due to the cooling effect of water.

In recent years the development of LVDC distribution networks is under consideration. DC electrical distributions offer several advantages compared to AC ones in many applications, in particular in the presence of energy storage systems and distributed generation like high efficacy, flexibility and simple integration of renewables. The DC distribution allows to integrate in a more efficient “microgrid” different sources with DC/DC converters. The paper proposes an innovative model of microgrid configuration for aggregations of end-users able to share the power produced by common generators and energy services named by the authors Power Sharing Model (PSM) using a DC bus that connects in a one way approach, the common generators to the end-users. The paper investigates on the different suggested configurations of the PSM, with the converter characteristics and controls. A simplified case study is analyzed to test the performance of the sharing model and the stability of the control in different scenarios. The paper compares the PSM based on a LVDC grid with existing approaches of virtual aggregations, and it highlights the main differences between the currently existing methods and our new LVDC microgrid approach. The suggested PSM appears more efficient, convenient and flexible than the existing virtual models, because users physically self-consume and share the energy locally generated.

Abstract The paper proposes an innovative power-sharing model, i.e., a power-system architecture for aggregation of users able to share the power produced by common generators and energy services. The model is suitable for both multi-tenant buildings and groups of multiple buildings and it is applicable for both existing and new buildings. It is scalable for larger systems and suitable for an easier integration with storage systems. The novel principle of the model is that the energy produced by common generators can be shared among the end-users in a unidirectional way, so that each user remains passive towards the distributor, except a single active user that assumes the role of balance node. This key feature allows for easily implementing the model in all the residential and tertiary multi-units buildings in full compliance with national regulations, with the adoption of power sharing contracts as well. This paper discusses the feasibility of the model through a dynamic Matlab/Simulink model, which is used to show its effectiveness in several case studies. The significance of this work consists of approaching the energy sharing in buildings with a completely new strategy, based on an innovative system architecture that can be effectively implemented.

Energy theft poses a significant challenge for all parties involved in energy distribution, and its detection is crucial for maintaining stable and financially sustainable energy grids. One potential solution for detecting energy theft is through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) methods. This systematic review article provides an overview of the various methods used by malicious users to steal energy, along with a discussion of the challenges associated with implementing a generalized AI solution for energy theft detection. In this work, we analyze the benefits and limitations of AI methods, including machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks, and relate them to the specific thefts also analyzing problems arising with data collection. The article proposes key aspects of generalized AI solutions for energy theft detection, such as the use of smart meters and the integration of AI algorithms with existing utility systems. Overall, we highlight the potential of AI methods to detect various types of energy theft and emphasize the need for further research to develop more effective and generalized detection systems, providing key aspects of possible generalized solutions.
