At the 1972 Stockholm Conference, participating States expressed concern about the extent and consequences of air pollution, laying the groundwork for international legal cooperation to address it. The Action Plan for the Human Environment included the need to promote scientific observation of the atmosphere, and the principles set out in the Stockholm Declaration served, as in other areas of environmental international law, to articulate the response to the threats identified. Since that meeting, the evolution of international legal protection of the atmosphere has been marked by the implementation of three international regimes. The European regime on transboundary air pollution, inaugurated in 1979, was the first model of international cooperation in this field, and influenced subsequent developments in the regimes on ozone layer protection and climate change. Taking into account the foundational impetus that the Stockholm Conference provided for the development of these regimes, this paper analyses the evolution of international legal protection of the atmosphere in the fifty years since the Conference was held

Recycled waste materials obtained from industrial and agricultural processes are becoming promising thermal and acoustic insulating solutions in building applications; their use can play an important role in the environmental impact reduction. The aim of the present paper is the evaluation of the thermal performance of recycled waste panels consisting of cork scraps, rice husk, coffee chaff, and end-life granulated tires, glued in different weight ratios and pressed. Six panels obtained from the mixing of these waste materials were fabricated and analyzed. In particular, the scope is the selection of the best compromise solutions from the thermal and environmental points of view. To this aim, thermal resistances were measured in laboratory and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis was carried out for each panel; a cross-comparative examination was performed in order to optimize their properties and find the best panels solutions to be assembled in the future. Life Cycle Analysis was carried out in terms of primary Embodied Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions, considering a ‘‘cradle-to-gate” approach. The obtained thermal conductivities varied in the 0.055 to 0.135 W/mK range, in the same order of magnitude of many traditional systems. The best thermal results were obtained for the panels made of granulated cork, rice husk, and coffee chaff in this order. The rubber granulate showed higher values of the thermal conductivity (about 0.15 W/mK); a very interesting combined solution was the panel composed of cork (60%), rice husk (20%), and coffee chaff (20%), with a thermal conductivity of 0.08 W/mK and a Global Warming Potential of only 2.6 kg CO2eq/m2. Considering the Embodied Energy (CED), the best solution is a panel composed of 56% of cork and 44% of coffee chaff (minimum CED and thermal conductivity).

However, in the fuel elements with U-Mo fuel, an increase in the diameter of the outer cladding is observed. This is most noticeable in the upper part of the fuel element. Storage of the fuel elements with UO2 fuel for 15–22 years does not lead to a change in their diameter within the measurement accuracy. At the same time, metallographic studies have shown that on the external surface of the outer cladding and the internal surface of the inner cladding of the fuel elements with U-Mo+Mg and UO2+Mg fuel compositions, after long-term storage, defects are observed in the form of intergranular and irregular frontal corrosion, pits and pittings up to 20 µm deep. No interaction is found at the points of contact between the fuel claddings and the fuel composition of the layers. There is no noticeable decrease in the thickness of the outer and inner claddings of the fuel elements after long-term storage, nor does the thickness of the claddings at the locations of defects go beyond its minimum initial value, taking into account the technological tolerance for variations in thickness. It is noteworthy, however, that cracks are found in both types of fuel elements both in the fuel grains and in the magnesium matrix. As a result of long-term storage of the fuel elements with U-Mo fuel for 45–55 years, the mechanical properties of their outer claddings gradually degrade, due to which the plasticity of the cladding is significantly reduced.

The proposed framework uses Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to represent unique energy profiles in a transparent and secure trading environment. Leveraging Federated Deep Reinforcement Learning (FDRL), the system promotes collaborative and adaptive energy management strategies, maintaining user privacy. A notable innovation is the use of smart contracts, ensuring high efficiency and integrity in energy transactions. Extensive evaluations demonstrate the system's scalability and the effectiveness of the FDRL method in optimizing energy distribution. This research significantly contributes to developing sophisticated decentralized smart grid infrastructures. Our approach broadens potential blockchain and AI applications in sustainable energy systems and addresses incentive alignment and transparency challenges in traditional energy trading mechanisms. To identify the beneficial features of a numerical optimized compressor design, this paper analyses the influence of arbitrary blade surfaces on the loss generation in a transonic centrifugal compressor. The paper therefore focuses on an analysis of the secondary flow development within the impeller blade passages. To do this, steady simulations were performed on both a baseline and an optimized blade design. Two distinct design features of the optimized compressor stage were identified, which lead to a more homogenous impeller exit flow and thus to an increase in total-to-static efficiency of 1.76% points: the positive lean in the near-tip region and the positive blade curvature in the rear part of the optimized impeller. Furthermore, through extensive experimental investigations conducted on a large scale test rig it has been possible to prove the particular impeller outflow characteristics of the baseline compressor stage.

The implementation of agroecology principles within organic farming research is a crux to redesign sustainable agri-food systems. To govern this transition, the local research demand should be addressed by direct engagement of all stakeholders in the research process. The first step is the involvement of farmers and technicians, with the aim of restoring their decision-making role, switching governance to local scale. The co-design/co-management of Long-Term Experiments (LTEs) can be crucial to govern the above-described transition through networking and participatory activities. In this study, we report the experience of co-designing a new LTE in Southern Italy by local actors and scientists. Through a participatory action research methodology, an LTE was considered as a biophysical component of an agroecological living lab, a public–private environment aimed to design a local food system. The setup of parallel field trials in satellite farms stands for the other biophysical component, whereas the stakeholder platform represents the social one. Through definition of common objectives, a step-by-step process is presented, which highlights the interest of local organic actors to share ideas and perspectives for the territory, pointing out the inclusion of end-users (the consumers) in the process to complete the transition to sustainable food systems.
