    The study of neutron-induced reactions is of high relevance in a wide variety of fields, ranging from stellar nucleosynthesis and fundamental nuclear physics to applications of nuclear technology. In nuclear energy, high accuracy neutron data are needed for the development of Generation IV fast reactors and accelerator driven systems, these last aimed specifically at nuclear waste incineration, as well as for research on innovative fuel cycles. In this context, a high luminosity Neutron Time Of Flight facility, n_TOF, is operating at CERN since more than a decade, with the aim of providing new, high accuracy and high resolution neutron cross-sections. Thanks to the features of the neutron beam, a rich experimental program relevant to nuclear technology has been carried out so far. The program will be further expanded in the near future, thanks in particular to new highflux experimental area, now under construction.

    To assign fossil and nonfossil contributions to carbonaceous particles, radiocarbon ((14)C) measurements were performed on organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-insoluble OC (WINSOC) of aerosol samples from a regional background site in South China under different seasonal conditions. The average contributions of fossil sources to EC, OC and WINSOC were 38 ± 11%, 19 ± 10%, and 17 ± 10%, respectively, indicating generally a dominance of nonfossil emissions. A higher contribution from fossil sources to EC (∼51%) and OC (∼30%) was observed for air-masses transported from Southeast China in fall, associated with large fossil-fuel combustion and vehicle emissions in highly urbanized regions of China. In contrast, an increase of the nonfossil contribution by 5-10% was observed during the periods with enhanced open biomass-burning activities in Southeast Asia or Southeast China. A modified EC tracer method was used to estimate the secondary organic carbon from fossil emissions by determining (14)C-derived fossil WINSOC and fossil EC. This approach indicates a dominating secondary component (70 ± 7%) of fossil OC. Furthermore, contributions of biogenic and biomass-burning emissions to contemporary OC were estimated to be 56 ± 16% and 44 ± 14%, respectively.

    A Bi 3 + -stimulated Au electrodeposition process in slightly alkaline Na 3 Au SO 3 2 + Na 2 SO 3 electrolytes has been previously demonstrated for void-free extreme bottom-up filling of high aspect ratio trenches in gratings that are key to advanced X-ray imaging technologies. Effective use of the full area of the gratings with conventional X-ray sources requires they have a finite radius of curvature to align the high aspect ratio Au-filled trenches with divergent X-rays. With that in mind, this work demonstrates bottom-up Au filling in gratings that are attached to curved holders. Contactless mapping of the Au-filled gratings captures residual curvature that is retained after their release from the curved holders (i.e., intrinsic curvature). X-ray diffraction captures the elastic strains in the Si underlying the Au-filled trenches of the grating. Complementary measurements on the surfaces of unpatterned Si wafers mounted on curved holders capture the actual curvatures and strains imposed in the mounted gratings. The gratings, either intrinsically curved or re-bent, provide high visibility across the entire field of view of an X-ray phase contrast imaging system with elastic strains substantially below those in planar gratings bent to the same radius.

    Source apportionment studies of particulate matter (PM) link chemical composition to emission sources, while health risk analyses link health outcomes and chemical composition. There are limited studies to link emission sources and health risks from ambient measurements. We show such an attempt for particulate trace elements. Elements in PM2.5 were measured in wintertime Beijing, and the total concentrations of 14 trace elements were 1.3-7.3 times higher during severe pollution days than during low pollution days. Fe, Zn, and Pb were the most abundant elements independent of the PM pollution levels. Chemical fractionation shows that Pb, Mn, Cd, As, Sr, Co, V, Cu, and Ni were present mainly in the bioavailable fraction. Positive matrix factorization was used to resolve the sources of particulate trace elements into dust, oil combustion, coal combustion, and traffic-related emissions. Traffic-related emission contributed 65% of total mass of the measured elements during low pollution days. However, coal combustion dominated (58%) during severe pollution days. By combining element-specific health risk analyses and source apportionment results, we conclude that traffic-related emission dominates the health risks by particulate trace elements during low pollution days, while coal combustion becomes equally or even more important during moderate and severe pollution days.

    The $^{238}$U to $^{235}$U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to $\sim$1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets have been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of the neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. A good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental dataset available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to $\sim$1 GeV.

    Polymer electrolyte water electrolysis (PEWE) is perceived as a key technology for conversion of renewable electricity in large-scale energy storage applications and deep decarbonization of the traditionally carbon-intensive mobility and chemical industry sectors. Since the price of hydrogen produced by PEWE is dominated by the price of electricity, it is crucial to ensure low degradation rates during the lifetime of a PEWE stack. This study aims to shed light onto the effects of cationic impurities that are responsible for the water impurity related failures of a majority of commercial stacks by employing operando neutron imaging coupled with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. A detailed overpotential analysis is conducted to elucidate how different voltage losses are triggered depending on the relative position of the cationic contaminant in the catalyst coated membrane. Based on this, a novel, CO2 – assisted, method for the extraction of cationic impurities from the ionomer of the electrolyzer to recover performance during operation of the cell is presented.     A search is presented for new physics in events with two low-momentum, oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9. The observed event yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model. The results are interpreted in terms of pair production of charginos and neutralinos (X1 and X2) with nearly degenerate masses, as expected in natural supersymmetry models with light higgsinos, as well as in terms of the pair production of top squarks (t), when the lightest neutralino and the top squark have similar masses. At 95% confidence level, wino-like X1/X2 masses are excluded up to 230 GeV for a mass difference of 20 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino. In the higgsino-like model, masses are excluded up to 168 GeV for the same mass difference. For pair production, top squark masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a mass difference of 40 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino.     A solar receiver/reactor has been designed specifically to study high-temperature gas phase chemical reactions using a laser based metrology. It is a cavity-type receiver, lined with stabilized ZrO2, and operated at temperatures up to 2000 K. The gas temperature is measured in situ using the coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) of N2. Optical access for the CARS measurement is accomplished via two side windows, each subtending a 118-mrad cone angle at the center of the cavity, providing enough clearance for the input laser beams and the output signal carrying the temperature information. Two endothermic processes were used for the initial evaluation of this method: the NH3 dissociation into N2 and H2, and the CO2-reforming of CH4 into synthesis gas. The process flow was directly exposed to high solar fluxes in addition to infrared radiation emitted by the hot reactor walls. The laser-based metrology performed satisfactorily in spite of the presence of the intense radiation field. This paper describes in detail the technical aspects of the experimental setup, presents examples of spectra and temperature measurements, and discusses practical problems encountered during experimentation.

    In order to achieve reliable data regarding high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell degradation (HT-PEFC) a novel diagnostic technique for electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) determination was developed. In situ cyclovoltammetric monolayer CO oxidation charge measurements were combined with real-time CO2 exhaust gas analysis. Different evaluating methods were developed to overcome the problem of side reactions during CO stripping. Furthermore, a calibration curve for absolute ECSA determination via CO stripping was established. These methods were additionally successfully extended and implemented to locally resolved ECSA measurements. In summary, this paper introduces novel fundamental HT-PEFC diagnostics for improved understanding of degradation phenomena.

    The study of neutron-induced reactions is of high relevance in a wide variety of fields, ranging from stellar nucleosynthesis and fundamental nuclear physics to applications of nuclear technology. In nuclear energy, high accuracy neutron data are needed for the development of Generation IV fast reactors and accelerator driven systems, these last aimed specifically at nuclear waste incineration, as well as for research on innovative fuel cycles. In this context, a high luminosity Neutron Time Of Flight facility, n_TOF, is operating at CERN since more than a decade, with the aim of providing new, high accuracy and high resolution neutron cross-sections. Thanks to the features of the neutron beam, a rich experimental program relevant to nuclear technology has been carried out so far. The program will be further expanded in the near future, thanks in particular to new highflux experimental area, now under construction.

    To assign fossil and nonfossil contributions to carbonaceous particles, radiocarbon ((14)C) measurements were performed on organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-insoluble OC (WINSOC) of aerosol samples from a regional background site in South China under different seasonal conditions. The average contributions of fossil sources to EC, OC and WINSOC were 38 ± 11%, 19 ± 10%, and 17 ± 10%, respectively, indicating generally a dominance of nonfossil emissions. A higher contribution from fossil sources to EC (∼51%) and OC (∼30%) was observed for air-masses transported from Southeast China in fall, associated with large fossil-fuel combustion and vehicle emissions in highly urbanized regions of China. In contrast, an increase of the nonfossil contribution by 5-10% was observed during the periods with enhanced open biomass-burning activities in Southeast Asia or Southeast China. A modified EC tracer method was used to estimate the secondary organic carbon from fossil emissions by determining (14)C-derived fossil WINSOC and fossil EC. This approach indicates a dominating secondary component (70 ± 7%) of fossil OC. Furthermore, contributions of biogenic and biomass-burning emissions to contemporary OC were estimated to be 56 ± 16% and 44 ± 14%, respectively.

    A Bi 3 + -stimulated Au electrodeposition process in slightly alkaline Na 3 Au SO 3 2 + Na 2 SO 3 electrolytes has been previously demonstrated for void-free extreme bottom-up filling of high aspect ratio trenches in gratings that are key to advanced X-ray imaging technologies. Effective use of the full area of the gratings with conventional X-ray sources requires they have a finite radius of curvature to align the high aspect ratio Au-filled trenches with divergent X-rays. With that in mind, this work demonstrates bottom-up Au filling in gratings that are attached to curved holders. Contactless mapping of the Au-filled gratings captures residual curvature that is retained after their release from the curved holders (i.e., intrinsic curvature). X-ray diffraction captures the elastic strains in the Si underlying the Au-filled trenches of the grating. Complementary measurements on the surfaces of unpatterned Si wafers mounted on curved holders capture the actual curvatures and strains imposed in the mounted gratings. The gratings, either intrinsically curved or re-bent, provide high visibility across the entire field of view of an X-ray phase contrast imaging system with elastic strains substantially below those in planar gratings bent to the same radius.

    Source apportionment studies of particulate matter (PM) link chemical composition to emission sources, while health risk analyses link health outcomes and chemical composition. There are limited studies to link emission sources and health risks from ambient measurements. We show such an attempt for particulate trace elements. Elements in PM2.5 were measured in wintertime Beijing, and the total concentrations of 14 trace elements were 1.3-7.3 times higher during severe pollution days than during low pollution days. Fe, Zn, and Pb were the most abundant elements independent of the PM pollution levels. Chemical fractionation shows that Pb, Mn, Cd, As, Sr, Co, V, Cu, and Ni were present mainly in the bioavailable fraction. Positive matrix factorization was used to resolve the sources of particulate trace elements into dust, oil combustion, coal combustion, and traffic-related emissions. Traffic-related emission contributed 65% of total mass of the measured elements during low pollution days. However, coal combustion dominated (58%) during severe pollution days. By combining element-specific health risk analyses and source apportionment results, we conclude that traffic-related emission dominates the health risks by particulate trace elements during low pollution days, while coal combustion becomes equally or even more important during moderate and severe pollution days.

    The $^{238}$U to $^{235}$U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to $\sim$1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets have been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of the neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. A good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental dataset available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to $\sim$1 GeV.

    Polymer electrolyte water electrolysis (PEWE) is perceived as a key technology for conversion of renewable electricity in large-scale energy storage applications and deep decarbonization of the traditionally carbon-intensive mobility and chemical industry sectors. Since the price of hydrogen produced by PEWE is dominated by the price of electricity, it is crucial to ensure low degradation rates during the lifetime of a PEWE stack. This study aims to shed light onto the effects of cationic impurities that are responsible for the water impurity related failures of a majority of commercial stacks by employing operando neutron imaging coupled with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. A detailed overpotential analysis is conducted to elucidate how different voltage losses are triggered depending on the relative position of the cationic contaminant in the catalyst coated membrane. Based on this, a novel, CO2 – assisted, method for the extraction of cationic impurities from the ionomer of the electrolyzer to recover performance during operation of the cell is presented.     A search is presented for new physics in events with two low-momentum, oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9. The observed event yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model. The results are interpreted in terms of pair production of charginos and neutralinos (X1 and X2) with nearly degenerate masses, as expected in natural supersymmetry models with light higgsinos, as well as in terms of the pair production of top squarks (t), when the lightest neutralino and the top squark have similar masses. At 95% confidence level, wino-like X1/X2 masses are excluded up to 230 GeV for a mass difference of 20 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino. In the higgsino-like model, masses are excluded up to 168 GeV for the same mass difference. For pair production, top squark masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a mass difference of 40 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino.     A solar receiver/reactor has been designed specifically to study high-temperature gas phase chemical reactions using a laser based metrology. It is a cavity-type receiver, lined with stabilized ZrO2, and operated at temperatures up to 2000 K. The gas temperature is measured in situ using the coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) of N2. Optical access for the CARS measurement is accomplished via two side windows, each subtending a 118-mrad cone angle at the center of the cavity, providing enough clearance for the input laser beams and the output signal carrying the temperature information. Two endothermic processes were used for the initial evaluation of this method: the NH3 dissociation into N2 and H2, and the CO2-reforming of CH4 into synthesis gas. The process flow was directly exposed to high solar fluxes in addition to infrared radiation emitted by the hot reactor walls. The laser-based metrology performed satisfactorily in spite of the presence of the intense radiation field. This paper describes in detail the technical aspects of the experimental setup, presents examples of spectra and temperature measurements, and discusses practical problems encountered during experimentation.

    In order to achieve reliable data regarding high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell degradation (HT-PEFC) a novel diagnostic technique for electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) determination was developed. In situ cyclovoltammetric monolayer CO oxidation charge measurements were combined with real-time CO2 exhaust gas analysis. Different evaluating methods were developed to overcome the problem of side reactions during CO stripping. Furthermore, a calibration curve for absolute ECSA determination via CO stripping was established. These methods were additionally successfully extended and implemented to locally resolved ECSA measurements. In summary, this paper introduces novel fundamental HT-PEFC diagnostics for improved understanding of degradation phenomena.
