description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal , Other literature type 2013 NetherlandsPublisher:Wiley Krijn P. de Jong; Anne Mette Frey; Johannes H. Bitter; Johannes H. Bitter; Tomas van Haasterecht;AbstractCalcium oxide supported on ZrO2 is a highly active catalyst for base‐catalyzed reactions such as aldol‐type reactions and transesterification reactions. The role of key parameters during preparation, that is, impregnation versus precipitation, heat treatment, and metal oxide loading on the basicity and catalytic activity were investigated for CaO supported on ZrO2. An impregnation of 10 wt % CaO on monoclinic zirconia followed by heat treatment at 600 °C resulted in high activity for the self‐condensation reaction of acetone. An evaluation of a series of CaO/ZrO2 samples with different loadings showed that the activity increased for impregnated amounts per gram catalyst of 0–10 wt % CaO, and at higher loading the activity decreased as a result of a decrease in dispersion. The number of strong base sites (calculated from CO2 desorbed at temperatures higher than 625 °C) correlated with the activity. For MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO on zirconia the catalytic activity increased as the ionic radius of the metal cation increased, suggesting the impact of base strength on catalytic performance.

Filament seals, such as brush seals and leaf seals, are investigated as a potential improved seal for gas turbine applications. As these seals operate in contact with the rotor, a good understanding of their stiffness is required in order to minimize seal wear and degradation. This paper demonstrates that the filament and complete seal stiffness is affected in comparable magnitudes by mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In certain cases, the aerodynamic forces can also lead to an overall negative seal stiffness which may affect stable seal operation. In negative stiffness, the displacement of the seal or rotor into an eccentric position causes a resultant force, which, rather than restoring the rotor to a central position, acts to amplify its displacement. Insight into the forces acting on the seal filaments is gained by investigating a leaf seal, which consists of a pack of thin planar leaves arranged around the rotor, with coverplates on either side of the leaf pack, offset from the pack surfaces. The leaf seal is chosen due to its geometry being more suitable for analysis compared to alternative filament seals such as the brush seal. Data from two experimental campaigns are presented which show a seal exhibiting negative stiffness and a seal exhibiting a stiffness reduction due to aerodynamic effects. An empirical model for the forces acting on leaf filaments is developed based on the experimental data, which allows separation of mechanical and aerodynamic forces. In addition a numerical model is developed to analyze the flow approaching the leaf pack and the interleaf flow, which gives an insight into the causes of the aerodynamic forces. Using the empirical and numerical models together, a full picture of the forces affecting leaf stiffness is created. Validation of the models is achieved by successfully predicting seal stiffness for a further data set across the full range of operating conditions. The understanding of aerodynamic forces and their impact on filament and seal stiffness allows for their consideration in leaf seal design. A qualitative assessment of how they may be used to improve seal operation in filament seals is given.

ıı LONG TERM GENERATION EXPANSION PLANNING with GENETIC ALGORITHMS and SIMULATED ANNEALING Mehmet YILDIRIM Keywords: Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing, Energy Planning, Generation Expansion Planning. Abstract: In this study, genetic algorithms with simulated annealing is applied to the electrical energy generation expansion planning. Electrical energy generation expansion planning is a non-linear, discrete, dynamic and highly constraint optimization problem which requires computer usage. Genetic algorithms have ability to solve this kind of problems. In order to address this problem, a cost function should be formulated, information used as inputs of the model must be gathered, and a program or an algorithm that minimize the cost function have to be constructed. Mixed-integer programming model is used in optimisation as a cost function. The model consists the cost function that minimize the construction and operational costs and reliability constraints. Years between the 2001-2020 are taken as planning term. Planning term is divided into four equal periods. Construction of units and calculation of costs are realized at the mid of periods. Having solve the problem, an optimisation was made by means of proporties that genetic algorithms don't fall into local minima and simulated annealing has fine tuning and genetic diversity. The type, the time and the number of units must be constructed is determined with the minimum cost and the reliability constraints. Electrical and economical results of long term electrical energy generation expansion planning by genetic algorithms with simulated annealing are compared with the results of WASP model which are stated by DPT Electrical Energy Specialization Committee Report. In this study, more power establishments and less investment expenses than WASP model are provided. m 144

Key to removing the heat from the transformer is the radiator which must be carefully designed to keep the temperatures within limits under all operating conditions whilst minimizing the transformer size, weight and cost. This paper compares the analytical method used to predict the radiator performance with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models in terms of heat dissipation. It is found that the analytical method and CFD models give similar results in the air natural (AN) cooling modes, whereas the analytical method overestimates the heat dissipation in the air forced (AF) cooling modes. Moreover, the thermal conduction effect in the radiator wall is investigated under different operating conditions and for different radiator sizes using the CFD models. The simulation results indicate that the radiator wall contributes to 6%-10% of the total heat dissipation under some circumstances and therefore should not be simply ignored in radiator models.

ABSTRACT : The traditional linear economy where the consumption of products is given by taking, manufacturing and discarding, has brought environment and the economy consequences, given the scarcity of finite resources, the generation of emissions into the environment and thousands of tons of residues that have saturated the management capacity. For this reason, it is necessary to migrate towards a Circular Economy (CE) that manages to preserve natural resources, extending the useful life of products and materials, increasing their durability through the application of different strategies with cycles of remanufacturing, repair, recycling and reuse. In Colombia, different initiatives have been developed regarding CE following the European model, in which various sectors have been involved, such as electrical and electronic equipment, plastic containers and packaging, batteries, pharmaceuticals, tires and, emergingly, the furniture sector. making this sector relevant, implementing in them different EC strategies such as the product as a service (PSS) which consists of a business model where the consumer can access a good or service without having to buy it, being the supplier of the product-service who is in charge of management throughout its life cycle. In this work, a methodology is developed to propose the configuration to follow to implement the PSS strategy in the furniture sector, specifically furniture of Higher Education Institutions (IES). This configuration takes into account factors that include sustainability criteria, proposing a new furniture acquisition and management model, which contributes to the reduction of environmental impacts and the generation of economic benefits. Validation is carried out through a panel of experts and a case study in a HEI, where the furniture management model based on PSS is simulated through system dynamics, and as a result the benefits and convenience of applying the PSS strategy are shown. and a change in patterns of use and consumption of products is encouraged.

D., Department of Mechanical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. R. Orhan YILDIRIM Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Metin AKKÖK September 1996, 139 Pages The design and development of metal shell structures whichIn the second part of the study, finite element method is employed to investigate the free external tube inversion. The simulation is performed on a using ABAQUS (Version 5.4) finite element program package. Although the inversion is 3-D metal forming process, it is reduced to 2-D problem since the deformation of the tube is axisymmetric. Two different meshes are generated using SAX1 (2-D axisymmetric linear shell element) and CAX4R (2- D axisymmetric bilinear solid element) elements. Both quasi-static and impact loading models are developed. Elastic, Mises yield and isotropic hardening material model is assumed. In the last part of the study an experimental work is done. Pre formed tubes are inverted using a specially designed and manufactured inversion fixture. Quasi-static tests are done using a displacement controlled universal testing machine. The impact tests up to 10 m/s are done on a 94 kg drop weight apparatus. In the tests cold drawn seamless mild steel tubes (BS 3602-CFS 360) with 50.8 mm outside diameter, 1.6 mm wall thickness and 203.2 mm length are used. At the end, the analytical and finite element predictions are compared with the experimental results and the agreement is seen to be a reasonable. description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal , Other literature type 2013 NetherlandsPublisher:Wiley Krijn P. de Jong; Anne Mette Frey; Johannes H.
