This required linking four models: the SIMPLACE crop growth modelling framework to calculate future yields under climate change for arable crops; the CAPRI model to estimate impacts on global agricultural markets, specifically product prices; the bio-economic farm model FSSIM to calculate the future changes in cropping patterns and farm net income at the farm and regional level; and the environmental model INTEGRATOR to calculate nitrogen (N) uptake and losses to air and water. First, the four linked models were applied to analyse the effect of climate change only or a most likely baseline (i.e. B1) scenario for 2050 as well as for two alternative scenarios with, respectively, strong (i.e. A1-b1) and weak economic growth (B2) for five regions/countries across Europe (i.e. Denmark, Flevoland, Midi Pyrenées, Zachodniopomorski and Andalucia). These analyses were repeated but assuming in addition to climate change impacts, also the effects of changes in technology and management on crop yields, the effects of changes in prices and policies in 2050, and the effects of all factors together. The outcomes show that the effects of climate change to 2050 result in higher farm net incomes in the Northern and Northern-Central EU regions, in practically unchanged farm net incomes in the Central and Central-Southern EU regions, and in much lower farm net incomes in Southern EU regions compared to those in the base year. Climate change in combination with improved technology and farm management and/or with price changes towards 2050 results in a higher to much higher farm net incomes. Increases in farm net income for the B1 and A1-b1 scenarios are moderately stronger than those for the B2 scenario, due to the smaller increases in product prices and/or yields for the B2 scenario. Farm labour demand slightly to moderately increases towards 2050 as related to changes in cropping patterns. Changes in N2O emissions and N leaching compared to the base year are mainly caused by changes in total N inputs from the applied fertilizers and animal manure, which in turn are influenced by changes in crop yields and cropping patterns, whereas NH3 emissions are mainly determined by assumed improvements in manure application techniques. N emissions and N leaching strongly increase in Denmark and Zachodniopomorski, slightly decrease to moderately increase in Flevoland and Midi-Pyrenées, and strongly decrease in Andalucia, except for NH3 emissions which zero to moderately decrease in Flevoland and Denmark.

The analysis is based on the out-turn of a biogas plant on the dairy farm Mirotin Vrbas, Republic of Serbia. Life Cycle Energy Assessment (LCEA), presented in this chapter, has demonstrated that three scenarios – biogas for heat production, biogas in cogeneration, and biomethane in transportation have positive energy balances, which indicate that in terms of replacement of fossil fuel consumption, these energy systems are promising alternatives. In the fourth scenario, where biogas is used for hydrogen production, the energy balance is negative, therefore socio-economical factors should be considered for overall consideration to ensure sustainability.

In a mesic North American grassland with and without the presence of bison ( Bos bison), a native ungulate grazer, three non-exclusive hypotheses for increased plant species richness in grazed grasslands were evaluated: (1) bison grazing enhances levels of resource (light and N) availability, enabling species that depend on higher resource availability to co-occur; (2) spatial heterogeneity in resource availability is enhanced by bison, enabling coexistence of a greater number of plant species; (3) increased species turnover (i.e. increased species colonization and establishment) in grazed grassland is associated with enhanced plant species richness. We measured availability and spatial heterogeneity in light, water and N, and calculated species turnover from long-term data in grazed and ungrazed sites in a North American tallgrass prairie. Both regression and path analyses were performed to evaluate the potential of the three hypothesized mechanisms to explain observed patterns of plant species richness under field conditions. Experimental grazing by bison increased plant species richness by 25% over an 8-year period. Neither heterogeneity nor absolute levels of soil water or available N were related to patterns of species richness in grazed and ungrazed sites. However, high spatial heterogeneity in light and higher rates of species turnover were both strongly related to increases in plant species richness in grazed areas. This suggests that creation of a mosaic of patches with high and low biomass (the primary determinant of light availability in mesic grasslands) and promotion of a dynamic species pool are the most important mechanisms by which grazers affect species richness in high productivity grasslands.

CRF is recognised for its actions on pituitary ACTH release, but also has direct effects within the brain which are important in mediating physiological responses to stress. Behavioral effects of CRF include increased locomotor activity and inhibition of food intake and its actions on metabolism are mediated mainly by activation of the sympathetic nervous system. CRF appears to be important in the regulation of energy balance and body weight, influencing both food intake and sympathetically-mediated thermogenesis. A defect in the synthesis or release of CRF has been implicated in the development of obesity in laboratory animals, since the condition is alleviated by adrenalectomy, hypophysectomy or exogenous CRF treatment. Recent data have revealed an additional role for CRF as a mediator of the neuroendocrine and metabolic responses to immune signals, particularly cytokines. The central actions of CRF are independent of the pituitary but may involve release of proopiomelanocortin products within the brain. CRF is thus emerging as an important integrator of the physiological responses to stress, infection and immunity, a finding which may have important implications for future therapies.

Behavioral effects of CRF include increased locomotor activity and inhibition of food intake and its actions on metabolism are mediated mainly by activation of the sympathetic nervous system. CRF appears to be important in the regulation of energy balance and body weight, influencing both food intake and sympathetically-mediated thermogenesis. A defect in the synthesis or release of CRF has been implicated in the development of obesity in laboratory animals, since the condition is alleviated by adrenalectomy, hypophysectomy or exogenous CRF treatment. Recent data have revealed an additional role for CRF as a mediator of the neuroendocrine and metabolic responses to immune signals, particularly cytokines. The central actions of CRF are independent of the pituitary but may involve release of proopiomelanocortin products within the brain. CRF is thus emerging as an important integrator of the physiological responses to stress, infection and immunity, a finding which may have important implications for future therapies.

This chapter introduces the role of enzymes in the biomass degradation, namely sugarcane bagasse and straw, leading to the formation of fermentable sugars and second-generation ethanol. The chapter begins with a retrospective of the structuring of the ethanol production chain and then presents current aspects where the deficit of production and its consequences in business can be seen. Subsequently, we list the role of enzymes involved in the biomass hydrolysis, the commercial cocktails, and the proposal of our laboratory in this context. On the other hand, the efficiency of enzymes on the biomass is increased when the bagasse and straw are pretreated. Thus, some technologies that may facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis and the formation of fermentable sugars are described. Lastly, recent analytical methods that enable a better analysis of the composition and viewing of fiber in the sugarcane biomass are presented.

AbstractBACKGROUND: Bioethanol produced from renewable biomass, such as corn meal, is a biofuel that is both renewable and environmentally friendly. Significant scientific and technological investments will be needed to achieve substitution of conventional fossil fuels with alternative fuels. The ethanol fermentation of enzymatically obtained corn meal hydrolyzates by free and immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus yeast in a batch system was studied. The initial glucose and inoculum concentration and the time required for the efficient ethanol production were optimized taking into account parameters such as ethanol concentration, ethanol yield, percentage of the theoretical yield of ethanol and volumetric productivity in both immobilized and free cell systems.RESULTS: The yeast cells were immobilized in Ca–alginate by an electrostatic droplet generation method. An optimal initial inoculum concentration of 2% (v/v) and optimal fermentation time of 38 h for both immobilized and free yeasts were determined. An optimal initial glucose concentration of 150 g L−1 for free system was achieved. At the initial glucose concentration of 176 g L no substrate or product inhibition were achieved with immobilized yeast.CONCLUSION: By immobilization of the yeast into Ca–alginate using the method of electrostatic droplet generation a superior system was realized, which exhibited lower substrate inhibition and higher tolerance to ethanol. The cells of S. cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus yeast entrapped in Ca–alginate showed good physical and chemical stability, and no substrate and product diffusion restrictions were noticed. Based on a case study of 50 households from indigenous forest communities living in the TCO Tacana I, ex-ante and ex-post household data were collected to obtain insights into the economic performance, livelihood strategy changes and role of forest products in the direct aftermath of the extreme weather event. A negative impact on natural resource dependent livelihood strategies was found as an immediate consequence. However, most households had recovered just one year later. There was no increase in the use of forest products to mitigate immediate income shortages. A typical high contribution of forest products to household income from before the flood continued afterwards. This article contributes to understanding of livelihood-based efforts of people living in tropical lowland forests to adapt to weather extremes.

When launching this program in 2004 the government stated that it wanted to avoid the same kind of geographical concentration, single crop focus, dominance of agribusiness, and exclusion of family farmers that have occurred with bioethanol production through the ProÁlcool policy since 1975. This paper compares the life histories of the bioethanol and the biodiesel policies of Brazil by analyzing their substantive policy content; the power and politics of actors that struggle for the design and implementation of the policies; and the polity in terms the organization and institutionalization of the policies. The paper concludes that both policies have become submerged by and dependent on the polity and politics of primarily the energy and agricultural sectors that operate as the two semi-autonomous governance fields. This submerging has shaped the substantive contents of biofuels policies, and explains why the 2004 biodiesel policy PNPB, in spite of its objectives for social inclusion and rural development, faces similar problems in implementation as its predecessor, the 1975 bioethanol policy ProÁlcool.

This paper compares the life histories of the bioethanol and the biodiesel policies of Brazil by analyzing their substantive policy content; the power and politics of actors that struggle for the design and implementation of the policies; and the polity in terms the organization and institutionalization of the policies. The paper concludes that both policies have become submerged by and dependent on the polity and politics of primarily the energy and agricultural sectors that operate as the two semi-autonomous governance fields. This submerging has shaped the substantive contents of biofuels policies, and explains why the 2004 biodiesel policy PNPB, in spite of its objectives for social inclusion and rural development, faces similar problems in implementation as its predecessor, the 1975 bioethanol policy ProÁlcool.

The production of 2nd generation bioethanol has reached a pilot stage. Some bioethanol plants are under construction around the world. Among them, one is being built in North-West of Italy by Chemtex. The planned yearly production is 40,000 t/year of bioethanol. The crop being selected as biomass is the Giant Reed (Arundo donax), that is a perennial crop; do not require irrigation and its cultivation require much less inputs than corn for biomass. Farmers need some new information on these new crops for biomass production. Also new information is thus requested by the market or by public agencies: energy balance and life cycle analysis of crop cultivation, labor budget, etc. To make comparison between standard biomasses and new ones, there is a need of standard data and procedures in order to compare the cultivation systems, and to make all the requested assessment. The authors build a web application to do so within the frame of the IEE Project Bioenergy Farm. The tool allow the user, in anonymous way, to compute its own crop cultivation costs, including the use of machinery, manpower, and production factors in order to compare different farming systems. Both field and logistic operations could be evaluated. Also the energetic balance could be computed. The application represents a step toward the standardization of data and calculation procedures for working time, energy balance and operation costs. The application is accessible, free of charge, at http://bioenergyfarm.eu. In this paper an energy balance of giant reed crops, is presented. One farm with 10 fields (80 ha) located north of Turin, Italy, has been used to analyze the giant reed performance. The fields were located between 0.7 km and 14 km. The logistics plays an important role in quantifying the operation costs. For the case of Arundo donax this variation is translated to 90 €/ha between fields next to the farm and the one far from the farm (assuming 23 tDM/ha yield), depicting the importance of incorporating the geographical variability of the production system (that diversify the transport operations cost) and the field characteristics such as field shape, soil conditions etc. Similar analysis will be carried out on Giant Reed, on the same farm and the comparison will be made among the two crops. From the viewpoints of growth and biomass production, adequate nitrogen supply is important. Growing coffee under full sunlight not only enhances potential yields but also increases demands for nitrogen fertilizer, the extent of which is ill quantified. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of N uptake and distribution, biomass production, photosynthetic characteristics of 2.5 years old trees and first bean yields of 3.5 years old coffee trees in response to four radiation treatments (30%–100% of full sun), factorially combined with four rates of nitrogen supply (0–88 g tree−1 y−1). The experiment was arranged in a randomized split-split plot design and was conducted at Jimma University horticultural farm, Ethiopia, using three coffee varieties. With larger N application and higher level of radiation, more N was utilized and more biomass and yield were produced. The fertilizer-N recovery ranged from 7 to 17% and declined with larger N supply and increased with radiation level. Coffee trees provided with larger amount of N had higher amounts of N per unit leaf area, light-saturated rate of leaf photosynthesis and first bean yield compared to trees grown in low N supply and limited radiation. The relation between biomass and plant N content was conservative across coffee varieties and can be used to estimate N content from biomass or calculate required uptake to produce a given amount of biomass. Though testing of the relation for other climatic conditions is advisable, this relation can also be used in the development of process-based quantitative coffee tree growth models,. Achieving synchronies between N supply and coffee trees demand without excess or deficiency requires further investigation of options to improve the low nitrogen recovery.

This required linking four models: the SIMPLACE crop growth modelling framework to calculate future yields under climate change for arable crops; the CAPRI model to estimate impacts on global agricultural markets, specifically product prices; the bio-economic farm model FSSIM to calculate the future changes in cropping patterns and farm net income at the farm and regional level; and the environmental model INTEGRATOR to calculate nitrogen (N) uptake and losses to air and water. First, the four linked models were applied to analyse the effect of climate change only or a most likely baseline (i.e. B1) scenario for 2050 as well as for two alternative scenarios with, respectively, strong (i.e. A1-b1) and weak economic growth (B2) for five regions/countries across Europe (i.e. Denmark, Flevoland, Midi Pyrenées, Zachodniopomorski and Andalucia). These analyses were repeated but assuming in addition to climate change impacts, also the effects of changes in technology and management on crop yields, the effects of changes in prices and policies in 2050, and the effects of all factors together. The outcomes show that the effects of climate change to 2050 result in higher farm net incomes in the Northern and Northern-Central EU regions, in practically unchanged farm net incomes in the Central and Central-Southern EU regions, and in much lower farm net incomes in Southern EU regions compared to those in the base year. Climate change in combination with improved technology and farm management and/or with price changes towards 2050 results in a higher to much higher farm net incomes. Increases in farm net income for the B1 and A1-b1 scenarios are moderately stronger than those for the B2 scenario, due to the smaller increases in product prices and/or yields for the B2 scenario. Farm labour demand slightly to moderately increases towards 2050 as related to changes in cropping patterns. Changes in N2O emissions and N leaching compared to the base year are mainly caused by changes in total N inputs from the applied fertilizers and animal manure, which in turn are influenced by changes in crop yields and cropping patterns, whereas NH3 emissions are mainly determined by assumed improvements in manure application techniques. N emissions and N leaching strongly increase in Denmark and Zachodniopomorski, slightly decrease to moderately increase in Flevoland and Midi-Pyrenées, and strongly decrease in Andalucia, except for NH3 emissions which zero to moderately decrease in Flevoland and Denmark.

The analysis is based on the out-turn of a biogas plant on the dairy farm Mirotin Vrbas, Republic of Serbia. Life Cycle Energy Assessment (LCEA), presented in this chapter, has demonstrated that three scenarios – biogas for heat production, biogas in cogeneration, and biomethane in transportation have positive energy balances, which indicate that in terms of replacement of fossil fuel consumption, these energy systems are promising alternatives. In the fourth scenario, where biogas is used for hydrogen production, the energy balance is negative, therefore socio-economical factors should be considered for overall consideration to ensure sustainability.

In a mesic North American grassland with and without the presence of bison ( Bos bison), a native ungulate grazer, three non-exclusive hypotheses for increased plant species richness in grazed grasslands were evaluated: (1) bison grazing enhances levels of resource (light and N) availability, enabling species that depend on higher resource availability to co-occur; (2) spatial heterogeneity in resource availability is enhanced by bison, enabling coexistence of a greater number of plant species; (3) increased species turnover (i.e. increased species colonization and establishment) in grazed grassland is associated with enhanced plant species richness. We measured availability and spatial heterogeneity in light, water and N, and calculated species turnover from long-term data in grazed and ungrazed sites in a North American tallgrass prairie. Both regression and path analyses were performed to evaluate the potential of the three hypothesized mechanisms to explain observed patterns of plant species richness under field conditions. Experimental grazing by bison increased plant species richness by 25% over an 8-year period. Neither heterogeneity nor absolute levels of soil water or available N were related to patterns of species richness in grazed and ungrazed sites. However, high spatial heterogeneity in light and higher rates of species turnover were both strongly related to increases in plant species richness in grazed areas. This suggests that creation of a mosaic of patches with high and low biomass (the primary determinant of light availability in mesic grasslands) and promotion of a dynamic species pool are the most important mechanisms by which grazers affect species richness in high productivity grasslands.

CRF is recognised for its actions on pituitary ACTH release, but also has direct effects within the brain which are important in mediating physiological responses to stress. Behavioral effects of CRF include increased locomotor activity and inhibition of food intake and its actions on metabolism are mediated mainly by activation of the sympathetic nervous system. CRF appears to be important in the regulation of energy balance and body weight, influencing both food intake and sympathetically-mediated thermogenesis. A defect in the synthesis or release of CRF has been implicated in the development of obesity in laboratory animals, since the condition is alleviated by adrenalectomy, hypophysectomy or exogenous CRF treatment. Recent data have revealed an additional role for CRF as a mediator of the neuroendocrine and metabolic responses to immune signals, particularly cytokines. The central actions of CRF are independent of the pituitary but may involve release of proopiomelanocortin products within the brain. CRF is thus emerging as an important integrator of the physiological responses to stress, infection and immunity, a finding which may have important implications for future therapies.

This chapter introduces the role of enzymes in the biomass degradation, namely sugarcane bagasse and straw, leading to the formation of fermentable sugars and second-generation ethanol. The chapter begins with a retrospective of the structuring of the ethanol production chain and then presents current aspects where the deficit of production and its consequences in business can be seen. Subsequently, we list the role of enzymes involved in the biomass hydrolysis, the commercial cocktails, and the proposal of our laboratory in this context. On the other hand, the efficiency of enzymes on the biomass is increased when the bagasse and straw are pretreated. Thus, some technologies that may facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis and the formation of fermentable sugars are described. Lastly, recent analytical methods that enable a better analysis of the composition and viewing of fiber in the sugarcane biomass are presented.

Significant scientific and technological investments will be needed to achieve substitution of conventional fossil fuels with alternative fuels. The ethanol fermentation of enzymatically obtained corn meal hydrolyzates by free and immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus yeast in a batch system was studied. The initial glucose and inoculum concentration and the time required for the efficient ethanol production were optimized taking into account parameters such as ethanol concentration, ethanol yield, percentage of the theoretical yield of ethanol and volumetric productivity in both immobilized and free cell systems.RESULTS: The yeast cells were immobilized in Ca–alginate by an electrostatic droplet generation method. An optimal initial inoculum concentration of 2% (v/v) and optimal fermentation time of 38 h for both immobilized and free yeasts were determined. An optimal initial glucose concentration of 150 g L−1 for free system was achieved. At the initial glucose concentration of 176 g L no substrate or product inhibition were achieved with immobilized yeast.CONCLUSION: By immobilization of the yeast into Ca–alginate using the method of electrostatic droplet generation a superior system was realized, which exhibited lower substrate inhibition and higher tolerance to ethanol. The cells of S. cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus yeast entrapped in Ca–alginate showed good physical and chemical stability, and no substrate and product diffusion restrictions were noticed. Based on a case study of 50 households from indigenous forest communities living in the TCO Tacana I, ex-ante and ex-post household data were collected to obtain insights into the economic performance, livelihood strategy changes and role of forest products in the direct aftermath of the extreme weather event. A negative impact on natural resource dependent livelihood strategies was found as an immediate consequence. However, most households had recovered just one year later. There was no increase in the use of forest products to mitigate immediate income shortages. A typical high contribution of forest products to household income from before the flood continued afterwards. This article contributes to understanding of livelihood-based efforts of people living in tropical lowland forests to adapt to weather extremes.

When launching this program in 2004 the government stated that it wanted to avoid the same kind of geographical concentration, single crop focus, dominance of agribusiness, and exclusion of family farmers that have occurred with bioethanol production through the ProÁlcool policy since 1975. This paper compares the life histories of the bioethanol and the biodiesel policies of Brazil by analyzing their substantive policy content; the power and politics of actors that struggle for the design and implementation of the policies; and the polity in terms the organization and institutionalization of the policies. The paper concludes that both policies have become submerged by and dependent on the polity and politics of primarily the energy and agricultural sectors that operate as the two semi-autonomous governance fields. This submerging has shaped the substantive contents of biofuels policies, and explains why the 2004 biodiesel policy PNPB, in spite of its objectives for social inclusion and rural development, faces similar problems in implementation as its predecessor, the 1975 bioethanol policy ProÁlcool.

The production of 2nd generation bioethanol has reached a pilot stage. Some bioethanol plants are under construction around the world. Among them, one is being built in North-West of Italy by Chemtex. The planned yearly production is 40,000 t/year of bioethanol. The crop being selected as biomass is the Giant Reed (Arundo donax), that is a perennial crop; do not require irrigation and its cultivation require much less inputs than corn for biomass. Farmers need some new information on these new crops for biomass production. Also new information is thus requested by the market or by public agencies: energy balance and life cycle analysis of crop cultivation, labor budget, etc. To make comparison between standard biomasses and new ones, there is a need of standard data and procedures in order to compare the cultivation systems, and to make all the requested assessment. The authors build a web application to do so within the frame of the IEE Project Bioenergy Farm. The tool allow the user, in anonymous way, to compute its own crop cultivation costs, including the use of machinery, manpower, and production factors in order to compare different farming systems. Both field and logistic operations could be evaluated. Also the energetic balance could be computed. The application represents a step toward the standardization of data and calculation procedures for working time, energy balance and operation costs. The application is accessible, free of charge, at http://bioenergyfarm.eu. In this paper an energy balance of giant reed crops, is presented. One farm with 10 fields (80 ha) located north of Turin, Italy, has been used to analyze the giant reed performance. The fields were located between 0.7 km and 14 km. The logistics plays an important role in quantifying the operation costs. For the case of Arundo donax this variation is translated to 90 €/ha between fields next to the farm and the one far from the farm (assuming 23 tDM/ha yield), depicting the importance of incorporating the geographical variability of the production system (that diversify the transport operations cost) and the field characteristics such as field shape, soil conditions etc. Similar analysis will be carried out on Giant Reed, on the same farm and the comparison will be made among the two crops. From the viewpoints of growth and biomass production, adequate nitrogen supply is important. Growing coffee under full sunlight not only enhances potential yields but also increases demands for nitrogen fertilizer, the extent of which is ill quantified. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of N uptake and distribution, biomass production, photosynthetic characteristics of 2.5 years old trees and first bean yields of 3.5 years old coffee trees in response to four radiation treatments (30%–100% of full sun), factorially combined with four rates of nitrogen supply (0–88 g tree−1 y−1). The experiment was arranged in a randomized split-split plot design and was conducted at Jimma University horticultural farm, Ethiopia, using three coffee varieties. With larger N application and higher level of radiation, more N was utilized and more biomass and yield were produced. The fertilizer-N recovery ranged from 7 to 17% and declined with larger N supply and increased with radiation level. Coffee trees provided with larger amount of N had higher amounts of N per unit leaf area, light-saturated rate of leaf photosynthesis and first bean yield compared to trees grown in low N supply and limited radiation. The relation between biomass and plant N content was conservative across coffee varieties and can be used to estimate N content from biomass or calculate required uptake to produce a given amount of biomass. Though testing of the relation for other climatic conditions is advisable, this relation can also be used in the development of process-based quantitative coffee tree growth models,. Achieving synchronies between N supply and coffee trees demand without excess or deficiency requires further investigation of options to improve the low nitrogen recovery.
