Then, this paper constructs a spatial autoregressive model, spatial error model, and spatial Durbin model to study the spatial spillover effects of financial development and clean energy. Further, this paper adopts the difference-in-differences (DID) model and the propensity score matching-DID (PSM-DID) method to conduct quasi-natural experiments on clean energy and examine whether China's energy policy can promote clean energy, thereby promoting economic growth. The analysis results reveal a positive correlation between clean energy and economic growth; local financial development promotes clean energy in the region but negatively impacts the clean energy in surrounding areas. Moreover, the findings confirm a significant positive relationship between the “policy treatment effect” and clean energy. Finally, we put forward relevant policy recommendations based on the empirical results.

With the growth of global food demand, agricultural carbon emissions caused by agricultural production have become a major challenge in controlling global warming. However, a systematic and visual literature review of food security and carbon emissions (FSCE) is still lacking, and there is a lack of exploration on the balanced path between ensuring food security and realizing carbon emission reduction. Based on 872 articles related to FSCE in the Web of Science (WOS) core database, this paper used CiteSpace and VOSviewer bibliometric software to analyze the relevant research focus and trends. This study found that developed countries dominated the research in this field, and the quantity, quality, and intensity of their authors, institutions, and cooperation among countries are higher than those of developing countries. Although the intensity of interdisciplinary cooperation has increased, it remains at a low level. Since 2007, the number of papers published in this field has increased significantly, and the research perspectives have diversified. Moreover, the research theme continues to expand with the core of "food security," involving the impact of climate change, crop production and food security, soil carbon sequestration, and farmers' livelihood sustainability. In addition, food production, food transportation, and food loss reduction are key paths that need to be balanced to ensure global food security and realize carbon emission reduction, and how to promote "economic growth" under the constraints of FSCE will be a future research hotspot.

The digital economy is an essential driving force supporting high-quality green development. Based on the panel data of cities in China’s Yangtze River from 2011 to 2020, this paper builds the digital economy evaluation index system from the five driving forces of market demand, information application, innovative development, industrial foundation, and the policy system. The Kernel density function, Moran index, and spatial econometric model are used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of the digital economy, as well as its driving effect and spatial effect on urban green innovation development. The results show that: (1) In China’s Yangtze River economic belt, the gap and the urban spatial dependence of the urban digital economy development are increasing; (2) The digital economy directly drives urban green innovation development, and also indirectly drives it by stimulating intra-city industrial structure upgrading and inter-city knowledge spillover, both of which have significant structural and regional differences; (3) Through the spatial spillover effect, it affects the urban green innovation development in its’ own city and in the surrounding ones, varying according to urban administrative levels and urban development types. The results provide a theoretical and practical reference for future policy formation to support high-quality green innovation development and fully utilize the driving force of the digital economy.

Sustainable development is inseparable from technological innovation. Only by making technological breakthroughs can we ensure the overall integration of economic development and environmental protection. Here, based on China’s inter-provincial panel data from 2006 to 2019, we examine the relationship between green technological innovation and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 30 provinces (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Tibet) and sub-regions (eastern, central, and western China) in China using a space panel econometric model based on the STIRPAT equation. Additionally, we use geographic information analysis methods to analyze the spatial pattern and evolution characteristics of CO2 emissions. Our major finding is that, from the perspective of the whole country, green technology innovation has a negative correlation with carbon emissions, but the effect is not obvious. In addition, from the regional sample, green technology innovation in the eastern and central regions can effectively reduce carbon emissions, while in the western region, green technology innovation can promote carbon emissions in the province. At the same time, the research results show a strong spatial spillover effect of inter-provincial carbon dioxide emissions, and the progress of green technology in neighboring provinces has a negative impact on carbon emissions in their own provinces. Therefore, cross-province policies and actions for reducing carbon emissions are necessary. Additionally, our results show that carbon-emission driving factors, such as economic development, industrial structure, energy consumption structure, and population, have a significant positive effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Based on the above research results, we put forward corresponding policy recommendations.

Regional development differences are a universal problem in the economic development process of countries around the world. In recent decades, China has experienced rapid urban development since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy. However, development differs across regions, triggering the migration of laborers from underdeveloped areas to developed areas. The interaction between regional development differences and Spring Festival has formed the world’s largest cyclical migration phenomenon, Spring Festival travel. Studying the migration pattern from public spatiotemporal behavior can contribute to understanding the differences in regional development. This paper proposes a geospatial network analytical framework to quantitatively characterize the imbalance of urban/regional development based on Spring Festival travel from the perspectives of complex network science and geospatial science. Firstly, the urban development difference is explored based on the intercity population flow difference ratio, PageRank algorithm, and attractiveness index. Secondly, the community detection method and rich-club coefficient are applied to further observe the spatial interactions between cities. Finally, the regional importance index and attractiveness index are used to reveal the regional development imbalance. The methods and findings can be used for urban planning, poverty alleviation, and population studies.

This paper analyzes the absolute convergence of urban electricity productivity in China during 1990–2011, applying Spatial Error Smooth Transition Auto-regression Model, and examines the spatial effect in convergence process. Then it analyzes the stage characteristics of electricity productivity convergence during the process of electricity market reformation and the conditional convergence which is affected by the urban economy. According to the results of our research, there exists significant absolute convergence of urban electricity productivity in China, and the spatial effect, especially spatial smooth transition effect, significantly enhance the convergence of urban electricity productivity. Since the electricity market reformation in 2002, significant stage characteristics exist in convergence of urban electricity productivity. The convergence rate of electricity productivity before 2002 is obviously lower than the one during the whole sample period, also the one after 2002 and the spatial nonlinear effect strengthens during the later period with marketization in electricity market and stricter regulation on energy conservation. The urban economy also affects the convergence of urban electricity productivity, while it does not promote the convergence rate because the high proportion of electricity-intensive industry in cities of western and northeastern region. At the conclusion of our paper, we put forward policy suggestions with the objective of narrowing the gap of urban electricity productivity and realizing sustainable urban development.

Results indicate that first, GFPP effectively improves TFEE, and the robustness tests show that the estimation results are reliable. Second, GFPP mainly improves TFEE by promoting industrial structure optimization and green technology innovation. Last, the role of GFPP in improving TFEE is mainly reflected in cities with high environmental protection enforcement and intellectual property protection. Therefore, China must expand the GFPP scope, further improve the local green finance practice capability, actively guide green fund to support energy technology innovation, accelerate green industrial transformation, and pool social forces to jointly promote green economic development.

The G-7 economies comprise a few of the global, mainly economically developed countries. On the other hand, in conjunction with these high economic development performances, the ecological behaviors in G-7 anions have concurrently provoked to elevate deep apprehensions among the stakeholders. Therefore, the present research aims to empirically investigate the environmental influences of nuclear energy, industrialization, fossil fuel energy, and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the G-7 nations between 1991 and 2018. After checking the cross-sectional dependency, this study employed the first-generation ((full modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS)) and second-generation (Driscoll and Kraay (D-K), feasible generalized least square (FGLS)) approaches for robust and reliable findings. The findings explore that nuclear energy production is ineffective in curbing the figure of ecological footprints in the long-run. Moreover, the industrialization process and fossil fuel energy consumption reduce environmental quality in the G-7 economies. More to the point, the empirical findings recommend that these nations can renovate their industrial production procedures in an eco-friendly behavior they can experience an unsoiled deployment of the energy transition. Similarly, the FDI also degrades environmental eminence in the long-run. This validates the pollution haven hypothesis in the G-7 countries. Based on these results, this study suggests the G-7 nations should reduce the production of nuclear energy levels, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy production in the industrial sector, reduce fossil fuel-based foreign investment, and assimilate ecological welfare strategies within their development planning.

Based on data from China’s seven pilot regional carbon markets, we evaluate the current CO2 trading price distortions. The empirical results indicate that during the study period, the average CO2 shadow price for the target cities is 1915.86 yuan per tonne, decreasing to 1880.57 yuan per tonne when using the bootstrap method for bias correction. The overall trends of CO2 shadow prices in most key cities are increasing given the strengthening of environmental regulations following the 11th Five-Year Plan. Based on data from China’s seven pilot regional carbon markets, we evaluate the current CO2 trading price distortions. The empirical results indicate that during the study period, the average CO2 shadow price for the target cities is 1915.86 yuan per tonne, decreasing to 1880.57 yuan per tonne when using the bootstrap method for bias correction. The overall trends of CO2 shadow prices in most key cities are increasing given the strengthening of environmental regulations following the 11th Five-Year Plan. The deployment of energy sources is considered the compassion of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Countries should keep balance with the three major proportions of the global energy trilemma: energy security, affordability, energy access, and ecological balance to construct a solid basis for competitiveness and prosperity. In this regard, this study examines the influence of nuclear energy, technological innovations, renewable energy, non-renewable energy, and natural resources on carbon footprint in the highest nuclear energy-producing countries from 1990 to 2019. To do this, we developed an inclusive and comprehensive empirical investigation and applied modern econometric approaches. Panel second-generation long-run cointegration advocates long-run associations among the series. The findings reveal that nuclear and renewable energy consumption extensively improve environmental excellence. Conversely, technological innovations and non-renewable energy significantly reduce environmental sustainability. Moreover, natural resources play an adverse role in long-run. The findings of the panel causality test discovered unidirectional causality is running from carbon footprint to nuclear energy. Additionally, bidirectional causality exists between technological innovations, renewables, non-renewables, and natural resources with carbon footprint. This recommends that these nations should integrate energy policy activities and develop energy strategy consistency by harmonizing the vital global nuclear energy aspects to assist a well-calibrated energy structure.

Then, this paper constructs a spatial autoregressive model, spatial error model, and spatial Durbin model to study the spatial spillover effects of financial development and clean energy. Further, this paper adopts the difference-in-differences (DID) model and the propensity score matching-DID (PSM-DID) method to conduct quasi-natural experiments on clean energy and examine whether China's energy policy can promote clean energy, thereby promoting economic growth. The analysis results reveal a positive correlation between clean energy and economic growth; local financial development promotes clean energy in the region but negatively impacts the clean energy in surrounding areas. Moreover, the findings confirm a significant positive relationship between the “policy treatment effect” and clean energy. Finally, we put forward relevant policy recommendations based on the empirical results.

With the growth of global food demand, agricultural carbon emissions caused by agricultural production have become a major challenge in controlling global warming. However, a systematic and visual literature review of food security and carbon emissions (FSCE) is still lacking, and there is a lack of exploration on the balanced path between ensuring food security and realizing carbon emission reduction. Based on 872 articles related to FSCE in the Web of Science (WOS) core database, this paper used CiteSpace and VOSviewer bibliometric software to analyze the relevant research focus and trends. This study found that developed countries dominated the research in this field, and the quantity, quality, and intensity of their authors, institutions, and cooperation among countries are higher than those of developing countries. Although the intensity of interdisciplinary cooperation has increased, it remains at a low level. Since 2007, the number of papers published in this field has increased significantly, and the research perspectives have diversified. Moreover, the research theme continues to expand with the core of "food security," involving the impact of climate change, crop production and food security, soil carbon sequestration, and farmers' livelihood sustainability. In addition, food production, food transportation, and food loss reduction are key paths that need to be balanced to ensure global food security and realize carbon emission reduction, and how to promote "economic growth" under the constraints of FSCE will be a future research hotspot.

The digital economy is an essential driving force supporting high-quality green development. Based on the panel data of cities in China’s Yangtze River from 2011 to 2020, this paper builds the digital economy evaluation index system from the five driving forces of market demand, information application, innovative development, industrial foundation, and the policy system. The Kernel density function, Moran index, and spatial econometric model are used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of the digital economy, as well as its driving effect and spatial effect on urban green innovation development. The results show that: (1) In China’s Yangtze River economic belt, the gap and the urban spatial dependence of the urban digital economy development are increasing; (2) The digital economy directly drives urban green innovation development, and also indirectly drives it by stimulating intra-city industrial structure upgrading and inter-city knowledge spillover, both of which have significant structural and regional differences; (3) Through the spatial spillover effect, it affects the urban green innovation development in its’ own city and in the surrounding ones, varying according to urban administrative levels and urban development types. The results provide a theoretical and practical reference for future policy formation to support high-quality green innovation development and fully utilize the driving force of the digital economy.

The digital economy is an essential driving force supporting high-quality green development. Based on the panel data of cities in China’s Yangtze River from 2011 to 2020, this paper builds the digital economy evaluation index system from the five driving forces of market demand, information application, innovative development, industrial foundation, and the policy system. The Kernel density function, Moran index, and spatial econometric model are used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of the digital economy, as well as its driving effect and spatial effect on urban green innovation development. The results show that: (1) In China’s Yangtze River economic belt, the gap and the urban spatial dependence of the urban digital economy development are increasing; (2) The digital economy directly drives urban green innovation development, and also indirectly drives it by stimulating intra-city industrial structure upgrading and inter-city knowledge spillover, both of which have significant structural and regional differences; (3) Through the spatial spillover effect, it affects the urban green innovation development in its’ own city and in the surrounding ones, varying according to urban administrative levels and urban development types. The results provide a theoretical and practical reference for future policy formation to support high-quality green innovation development and fully utilize the driving force of the digital economy.

Sustainable development is inseparable from technological innovation. Only by making technological breakthroughs can we ensure the overall integration of economic development and environmental protection. Here, based on China’s inter-provincial panel data from 2006 to 2019, we examine the relationship between green technological innovation and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 30 provinces (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Tibet) and sub-regions (eastern, central, and western China) in China using a space panel econometric model based on the STIRPAT equation. Additionally, we use geographic information analysis methods to analyze the spatial pattern and evolution characteristics of CO2 emissions. Our major finding is that, from the perspective of the whole country, green technology innovation has a negative correlation with carbon emissions, but the effect is not obvious. In addition, from the regional sample, green technology innovation in the eastern and central regions can effectively reduce carbon emissions, while in the western region, green technology innovation can promote carbon emissions in the province. At the same time, the research results show a strong spatial spillover effect of inter-provincial carbon dioxide emissions, and the progress of green technology in neighboring provinces has a negative impact on carbon emissions in their own provinces. Therefore, cross-province policies and actions for reducing carbon emissions are necessary. Additionally, our results show that carbon-emission driving factors, such as economic development, industrial structure, energy consumption structure, and population, have a significant positive effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Based on the above research results, we put forward corresponding policy recommendations.

Regional development differences are a universal problem in the economic development process of countries around the world. In recent decades, China has experienced rapid urban development since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy. However, development differs across regions, triggering the migration of laborers from underdeveloped areas to developed areas. The interaction between regional development differences and Spring Festival has formed the world’s largest cyclical migration phenomenon, Spring Festival travel. Studying the migration pattern from public spatiotemporal behavior can contribute to understanding the differences in regional development. This paper proposes a geospatial network analytical framework to quantitatively characterize the imbalance of urban/regional development based on Spring Festival travel from the perspectives of complex network science and geospatial science. Firstly, the urban development difference is explored based on the intercity population flow difference ratio, PageRank algorithm, and attractiveness index. Secondly, the community detection method and rich-club coefficient are applied to further observe the spatial interactions between cities. Finally, the regional importance index and attractiveness index are used to reveal the regional development imbalance. The methods and findings can be used for urban planning, poverty alleviation, and population studies.

This paper analyzes the absolute convergence of urban electricity productivity in China during 1990–2011, applying Spatial Error Smooth Transition Auto-regression Model, and examines the spatial effect in convergence process. Then it analyzes the stage characteristics of electricity productivity convergence during the process of electricity market reformation and the conditional convergence which is affected by the urban economy. According to the results of our research, there exists significant absolute convergence of urban electricity productivity in China, and the spatial effect, especially spatial smooth transition effect, significantly enhance the convergence of urban electricity productivity. Since the electricity market reformation in 2002, significant stage characteristics exist in convergence of urban electricity productivity. The convergence rate of electricity productivity before 2002 is obviously lower than the one during the whole sample period, also the one after 2002 and the spatial nonlinear effect strengthens during the later period with marketization in electricity market and stricter regulation on energy conservation. The urban economy also affects the convergence of urban electricity productivity, while it does not promote the convergence rate because the high proportion of electricity-intensive industry in cities of western and northeastern region. At the conclusion of our paper, we put forward policy suggestions with the objective of narrowing the gap of urban electricity productivity and realizing sustainable urban development.

Results indicate that first, GFPP effectively improves TFEE, and the robustness tests show that the estimation results are reliable. Second, GFPP mainly improves TFEE by promoting industrial structure optimization and green technology innovation. Last, the role of GFPP in improving TFEE is mainly reflected in cities with high environmental protection enforcement and intellectual property protection. Therefore, China must expand the GFPP scope, further improve the local green finance practice capability, actively guide green fund to support energy technology innovation, accelerate green industrial transformation, and pool social forces to jointly promote green economic development.

Results indicate that first, GFPP effectively improves TFEE, and the robustness tests show that the estimation results are reliable. Second, GFPP mainly improves TFEE by promoting industrial structure optimization and green technology innovation. Last, the role of GFPP in improving TFEE is mainly reflected in cities with high environmental protection enforcement and intellectual property protection. Therefore, China must expand the GFPP scope, further improve the local green finance practice capability, actively guide green fund to support energy technology innovation, accelerate green industrial transformation, and pool social forces to jointly promote green economic development.

The G-7 economies comprise a few of the global, mainly economically developed countries. On the other hand, in conjunction with these high economic development performances, the ecological behaviors in G-7 anions have concurrently provoked to elevate deep apprehensions among the stakeholders. Therefore, the present research aims to empirically investigate the environmental influences of nuclear energy, industrialization, fossil fuel energy, and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the G-7 nations between 1991 and 2018. After checking the cross-sectional dependency, this study employed the first-generation ((full modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS)) and second-generation (Driscoll and Kraay (D-K), feasible generalized least square (FGLS)) approaches for robust and reliable findings. The findings explore that nuclear energy production is ineffective in curbing the figure of ecological footprints in the long-run. Moreover, the industrialization process and fossil fuel energy consumption reduce environmental quality in the G-7 economies. More to the point, the empirical findings recommend that these nations can renovate their industrial production procedures in an eco-friendly behavior they can experience an unsoiled deployment of the energy transition. Similarly, the FDI also degrades environmental eminence in the long-run. This validates the pollution haven hypothesis in the G-7 countries. Based on these results, this study suggests the G-7 nations should reduce the production of nuclear energy levels, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy production in the industrial sector, reduce fossil fuel-based foreign investment, and assimilate ecological welfare strategies within their development planning.

Based on data from China’s seven pilot regional carbon markets, we evaluate the current CO2 trading price distortions. The empirical results indicate that during the study period, the average CO2 shadow price for the target cities is 1915.86 yuan per tonne, decreasing to 1880.57 yuan per tonne when using the bootstrap method for bias correction. The overall trends of CO2 shadow prices in most key cities are increasing given the strengthening of environmental regulations following the 11th Five-Year Plan. In addition, compared with the CO2 shadow prices in this paper, carbon trading prices in pilot cities present significantly negative distortions, which may fail to reflect the real opportunity cost of carbon abatement. Based on the findings of this study, several policy recommendations are proposed.

The deployment of energy sources is considered the compassion of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Countries should keep balance with the three major proportions of the global energy trilemma: energy security, affordability, energy access, and ecological balance to construct a solid basis for competitiveness and prosperity. In this regard, this study examines the influence of nuclear energy, technological innovations, renewable energy, non-renewable energy, and natural resources on carbon footprint in the highest nuclear energy-producing countries from 1990 to 2019. To do this, we developed an inclusive and comprehensive empirical investigation and applied modern econometric approaches. Panel second-generation long-run cointegration advocates long-run associations among the series. The findings reveal that nuclear and renewable energy consumption extensively improve environmental excellence. Conversely, technological innovations and non-renewable energy significantly reduce environmental sustainability. Moreover, natural resources play an adverse role in long-run. The findings of the panel causality test discovered unidirectional causality is running from carbon footprint to nuclear energy. Additionally, bidirectional causality exists between technological innovations, renewables, non-renewables, and natural resources with carbon footprint. This recommends that these nations should integrate energy policy activities and develop energy strategy consistency by harmonizing the vital global nuclear energy aspects to assist a well-calibrated energy structure.
